This is the Queens of Fantasy podcast, a podcast dedicated to deeply analyzing, discussing, and reading fantasy series alongside other readers. Each season of this podcast is dedicated to a specific fantasy series and/or author. The Queens in this podcast include Marissa, Alix, and Taylor. We are your guides and companions for your adventure through various fantasy worlds.

In this first episode, you pay fealty to your queens, as we introduce you to the podcast format as well as provide information about ourselves: what kind of readers we are, and what kind of people we are.

Let's get into The Wheel of Time! In this episode, Alix Sedai gives our new readers an intro into the Wheel of Time world. From an overview of the world itself to an overview of characters we can expect to find, this episode is meant for you to dip your toes into the world before you start this 14-book-plus-a-prequel series.

Taylor and Marissa also give a few blind predictions for the series. Alix goes into a bit more detail about Jordan and the writing process. And, of course, we go on one or two tangential discussions.

Book One: Prologue to Chapter 20 | The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan

Trollocs, Aes Sedai, prophesies, the Dark One, and so much more. In this episode, we recap the first section of The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan, summarizing the prologue through to the end of Chapter 20. Marissa and Tay highlight their fave – and least fave – sections so far, and Alix attempts to not give away any spoilers.

At the end, Tay and Marissa give some predictions, as well as rate all the characters from their fave to their least fave. Alix answers some questions and the three readers discuss everything from red flags to red herrings.

Book One: Chapter 21 to Chapter 43 | The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan

We rejoin the Queens as they follow Mat, Rand, and Perrin into taverns, across plains, and through steddings. Tay wonders if Mat will ever stop touching things, Alix ponders what it would be like to not want to talk to wolves, and Marissa fawns over a budding love story. And, of course, we encounter more characters, more enemies, and more of everything as we summarize Chapter 21 through to the end of Chapter 43. As last time, Marissa and Tay highlight their fave – and least fave – sections so far, and Alix attempts to not give away any spoilers.

This time we have a special guest at the end (Hello, Teresa Sedai) to join us in a game of "What's the Vibe?". Tay and Marissa also rate their fave and least fave characters so far, as Alix answers questions and continues guiding us along this epic fantasy journey.

Book One: Chapter 44 to the End of the Novel | The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan

One down, fourteen more to go! In this episode, the Queens finish reading The Eye of the World and share their many, many thoughts throughout the last section of the novel. Marissa begrudgingly accepts a fact she wishes wasn't true, Tay pleads for her feelings to be hurt – and hurt badly - and, once again, Alix attempts to guide the other two without spoiling future books. You can expect laughter, annoyance, and a thorough re-reading of a beautiful scene that enchanted our Queens. Plus, more characters, more descriptions, and a little more of everything as we summarize Chapter 44 to the end of the novel.

At the end, Tay and Marissa rate their fave and least fave characters so far. Alix asks a few questions this time, while answering several. And, to close it out, the Queens give their very official rulings on the zodiac signs for each character – at least so far.

Book Two: Prologue to the End of Chapter 20 | The Great Hunt by Robert Jordan

We're off on another journey, and this time we're meeting beautiful women cloaked in white, talking to more wolves, and chasing after a dagger, a horn, and the chance to escape the Aes Sedai. In other words, the Queens have read the first part of The Great Hunt, and share their thoughts on the book so far. Tay points out every piece of worldbuilding and foreshadowing that is woven into this great novel. Marissa talks about a two-page love scene for more than two minutes. And, as always, Alix Sedai is left giggling and wordless, as she tries not to give away the novel's next twists and turns. Please expect laughter, ranting, and some Rand slander – and a little bit of everything else – as these Queens summarize the Prologue to the end of Chapter 20 of The Great Hunt by Robert Jordan.

Our Queens close out the podcast with a game of "It's Giving," and it's giving you a great time. As always, Tay and Marissa rate their fave and least fave characters so far.

Book Two: Chapter 21 to the End of Chapter 40 | The Great Hunt by Robert Jordan

Horns go missing, the Aes Sedai continue plotting in Rand's head, Mat juggles some eggs, and Dena gets introduced to a fridge. The Queens are back with part two of The Great Hunt by Robert Jordan and Marissa and Taylor have colliding theories and mutual feelings on some of the happenings in this novel. With some great attention given to heavy foreshadowing, Tay takes great pride in breaking down this big, beautiful world. Marissa struggles with some more misogynistic tropes that seem to be popping up more and more often. And, as always, Alix Sedai attempts to explain and summarize without spoiling the other two Queens. In other words, our Queens summarize Chapter 20 to the end of Chapter 40 of The Great Hunt by Robert Jordan.

Our Queens close out the podcast with a game of Yearbook Superlatives, and it's in contention for the most entertaining game they've played yet. As always, Tay and Marissa rate their fave and least fave characters so far.

It's the final battle – for book two, and our Queens are ready to fight alongside, and against, some of the Wheel of Time characters. From ranting about Rand to providing life lessons on what not to say to your friends, Tay and Marissa share their thoughts on the newest developments in this high fantasy series. Tay connects some more prophesies together, Marissa delves into the growing misogyny in the world, and Alix attempts to convey her love for certain characters without spoiling the entire series. Expect some more Rand slander, more Nynaeve love, some new opinions on Mat, and the analysis of some great – and not-so-great – scenes from this novel. In other words, our three Queens summarize and analyze Chapter 41 to the end of Book Two: The Great Hunt by Robert Jordan.

At the end of the pod, Marissa and Tay share their reviews of books one and two. Then, to lighten the mood and enlighten each other, they assign Taylor Swift eras to each character – while Alix reminds them they don't need to fight about it. And, as always, the two end off with their lists of favourite to least favourite characters in the series.

A new year means a new Robert Jordan book. In this episode, our Queens delve into the third book of Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series, The Dragon Reborn. Marissa and Tay attempt to keep up with the crew as they fight trollocs, blame Tinkers for their weapons, chase after ethereal (or real?) dogs, and enter a new city of *AHEM* interesting design. You can expect new theories, rankings, and takes on characters from both Marissa and Tay, while Alix attempts to keep her spoilers to herself. The Queens read along as the chip on Egwene's shoulder grows and listen as Mat discovers his luck – and his appetite – are both insatiable. Marissa points out some inaccuracies of removing a wax seal on a letter, Tay discusses her theories and careful notes on various worldbuilding elements, and Alix tries desperately to keep a straight face while the other two try to guess what might happen next. We're back with part two of book four – and our Queens have a lot to discuss. We've got biblical connections, rising tensions, more misogyny, and a growing plot, which, of course, means more theories from both Tay and Marissa. Oh, and what's that? A possible redemption for Rand? Could this be the end of the Rand slander? Between Marissa's ecclesiastical musings at the start to Taylor's eagerness to share exactly how hot Mat is on the cover of her book, anything can happen in this episode. Oh, and Rand does stuff too. Probably. Tay reminds us of the Survivalist rule of threes, Alix avoids our eyes while she avoids giving any spoilers – and also learns something about a common saying. Marissa would love to have a little talk with Aviendha about which Pirates of the Caribbean character she finds most attractive. Queen Marissa confirms a theory of hers while throwing out several more. Queen Tay plays a rhyming game that ends in "vein," and also gets increasingly frustrated with every name in this series. And, as always, Queen Alix bites her tongue to keep from spilling all the secrets ever. Expect the Queens to discuss riding dresses, pronunciation, why Rand's a theatre major, and the location of the Forsaken. Book five is officially underway! The Queens start book five, The Fires of Heaven, in Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series, jumping right into the story with a trip to the Amyrlin Seat's office. Queen Tay reveals who she's been imagining Nynaeve as this entire time. Queen Marissa is tiring quickly of the misogynistic starts to the novels. And Queen Alix roots for Mat, in spite of him being blindfolded and throwing knives. As the characters move quickly into positions around the map, our Queens are left debating what happened to Nynaeve, what exactly is the age of Thom, and how long has balefire been a very, very, VERY big no. Oh, and Queen Alix, tries not to sing every song she knows while also biting her tongue to keep from spoiling everything that's coming up. In other words, join along as the Queens of this podcast discuss and analyze the Prologue to the end of Chapter 14 of Book Five of The Wheel of Time, The Fires of Heaven, by Robert Jordan.

From there, Queen Marissa reveals her newest mindset while confessing that she may or may not have been struggling in previous episodes. (Tell her you didn't notice.) Both Queen Marissa and Tay make wages on a potential theory and Queen Tay struggles to support a not-a-girls-girl girl. Queen Alix points out the most outrageously fictitious line in the series thus far. Altogether, expect our Queens to discuss the logistics of steamy activities, how much snow and ice hurts, whether or not Aviendha would survive a bit of water, and the non-sensical setup of the White Tower. And, as always, Queen Alix frightens the other two readers as they fear she may slip out a spoiler. Book Seven, Part One: Prologue to the End of Chapter 10 | A Crown of Swords by Robert Jordan

The Queens begin the seventh book of the Wheel of Time series, A Crown of Swords. We'd like to emphasize our trigger warnings throughout book seven. Please see trigger warnings below.

In the aftermath on Dumai Wells, our friends return to find someone upon a throne that is not theirs. Meanwhile in Salidar, Egwene receives some blackmail. In this episode the Queens question how much free will is involved in Aiel marriages, Queen Marissa presents us with her Mother, Maiden, Crone theory, and Queen Marissa and Queen Al both share a little bit of lore. Theories are thrown out as Egwene dreams and Queen Alix ignores them, laughing fits ensue at the idea of a particular character's dating profile and we ponder more biblical references. That is to say, join us as we read the Prologue to the end of Chapter 10 of Book Seven of The Wheel of Time, A Crown of Swords by Robert Jordan.

Welcome back to Book 7. As Elayne falls in the Queens' eyes, we follow the crew as they braid each other's hair in the dark and negotiate around the most uncharacteristic moments. We learn of Olver's skill for jocky-ing and Mat's skill of getting mad at anyone who dares to take it away from him. As Mat is tossed about the castle, the Queens pick up on unsettling vibes that they hope they're wrong about. From theorizing about everything and every character to wondering whether or not certain much-missed characters are truly gone, expect to find your favourite Queens analyzing every sentence in this book. That is to say, join us as we read Chapter 11 to the end of Chapter 24 of Book Seven of The Wheel of Time, A Crown of Swords by Robert Jordan.

At the end of the podcast, we have a special treat with not one, but two games! The Queens play Black Ajah or Nah, where Queens Tay and Marissa attempt to root out the Black Ajah we haven't yet found. The second game is Dead or Alive, where the two Queens attempt to guess which characters are going to make it to the very end. To cap it all off, Queens Tay and Marissa update their character rankings.

We'd like to emphasize our trigger warnings throughout book seven, and particularly for this episode. Given the frequency of certain content throughout this book – rape and sexual assault, in particular – we are putting out a blanket warning for this episode. Please expect rape and sexual assault content throughout the whole podcast.

The Queens have some tough topics to cover in this episode, but we have some laughs as well. The Sea Folk are finally approached, Nynaeve goes for a swim, and Tay and Alix would simply swear an oath and then break it. Queen Tay gets a reality check, Queen Marissa is now an expert on longboats and Queen Al probably screams internally while holding in spoilers. Book seven is finally closed! But, before The Queens can put this baby on their shelves, we've gotta discuss the good, the bad, and the ugly – and there's plenty of each to talk about. From crossing balefire streams to super special Myrdraal who can smell better than any other, this section really said anything is possible. Queen Marissa reads perfectly normal passages that do not have cuddles-and-kisses undertones, Queen Tay suggests a dangerous game for the final podcast, and Queen Alix relishes in her read-ahead privileges while trying not to spoil anything at all. In short, join your favourite Queens of Fantasy as they finish up the last section of this novel, reading Chapter 35 to the end of Book Seven of The Wheel of Time, A Crown of Swords by Robert Jordan.

We finish off the podcast with Queen Tay and Marissa's book reviews. Then, the two readers update their character rankings. Gather round, young adventurers, for we have a story recap for you! We are officially (but not literally) halfway through the series – if we don't count the prequel. To celebrate, we're reviewing everything we've read so far in The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. From the first moments we stepped into Eamon's Field to the last moments we saw of the crews' journeys through Randland, we've witnessed the fall and rise of Rand, the hair-tugging, braid-pulling, stubborn-babe ways of Nynaeve, and the ascent of Perrin from King of the Wolves to Lord of Eamon's Field. Mat's gone from our silly little dagger stealer to a dice-throwing general. Egwene's received the job promotion of a lifetime with a resume of a toddler. And, Min, Elayne, and Aviendha continue to dance closer to their future marriage to the man doomed to go mad.

In this episode, join the Queens as they unpack this journey, recapping each character's progress. Queens Tay and Marissa exile Alix Sedai to discuss all the theories they've had – and a few new ones. Then, all three Queens join forces to answer some amazing questions from our listeners about our thoughts, predictions, and reading adventure. Finally, like all good Queens of Fantasy pods, we end it with a game. This time, our game has the Queens describing each book very, very poorly.

Queen Alix rants over the start of her least favourite storyline, Queen Marissa explains why Faile no longer has toes, and Queen Tay throws out several theories that are ahead of their times. From searching for a Forsaken to searching for an action scene, the Queens discuss it all. Marissa is still upset about the weather conditions, Tay sparks a debate on succession and Alix gives us a lesson on praying mantis care. Ten books down, only four (well, five) more to go! The Queens join the characters as they make good, bad, and terrible decisions. Queen Marissa argues that Egwene makes a terrible choice, while both Queens Alix and Tay worry over their favourite Amyrlin Seat. Every wonders why Perrin left a perfectly viable axe to rust in the forest, and the Queens continue their disdain for Tuon -- even when she's almost a decent character. Expect axe swinging, weevil winnowing, cuendillar weaving, and a good amount of skirt smoothing as the Queens debate when to drop big questions in a courtship. Marissa is still very upset about the weather, Tay wonders whether she's reading a ghost story, and Al bites her tongue to prevent herself from revealing all the spoilers. Prequel: The Whole Novel | New Spring by Robert Jordan

Let's see where this all began! The Queens join Morraine, Siuan, and Lan nearly twenty years before The Eye of the World takes place. Morraine and Siuan are baby Accepted students in the tower, and Lan is fighting the good fight everywhere he can. We follow as our two favourite Sedais learn about the Dragon's birth, gain the shawl, prank anyone and everyone, buy several dresses on unrealistic timelines, and learn to fall out of love (unfortunately). The Queens are distraught to learn Lan's backstory is even more upsetting than they originally thought. Queens Marissa and Tay wonder whether they've missed a clue or six, while Alix practices her Aes Sedai composure as endeavors to remain spoiler-free. The Queens argue about apples and excerpts from "The Dragon Reborn", Queen Tay insists that two particular characters should not be together while Queen Marissa insists that they will be, resulting in another bet for coffee and Queen Al zips her lips to keep spoilers contained. Listen in as the Queens discuss the Prologue to the end of Chapter 15 of Book Thirteen of The Wheel of Time, Towers of Midnight by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson.

This episode ends with a game of The Type where the Queens question which Wheel of Time characters would be the type to do certain mundane things. Then Tay and Marissa slot those characters into their ranking lists, seeing who takes the top and who sinks to the bottom.

All three Queens aim their pitchforks at Gawyn, who is acting particularly silly in this segment. Queen Al attempts to hold her spoilers for the rest of the series, while Queen Tay tries to understand why our army generals are suddenly making mistakes. Queen Marissa, in turn, is scared and alone, checking under every bed and in every closet for where Demandred could possibly be hiding. As they barrel towards a battle to end them all, the Queens become increasingly concerned about the constantly shortening length of Nynaeve's hair. They debate whether or not they can take the Dark One seriously and Queen Tay wishes a different verb was used to describe a specific scene with Rand and the Dark One. Perrin continues to irk them all and the Queens beg Mat to be better than his wife. And, of course, Queens Marissa and Tay finally find Demandred -- and they are not particularly pleased. Mistakes are made, battle plans are changed, and the Trollocs head towards the Fields of Merrilor. So climb aboard our boat as we set sail with The Farthest Shore by Ursula Le Guin, book three of the Earthsea Series.

This episode concludes with a game where the Queens help our characters curate the perfect sailing playlist for their long journey, as well as Marissa and Tay's best and worst character rankings.

Queen Tay looks out for Rand of all people in Earhtsea, while Queen Marissa shares her knowledge about dragons. The Queens pick up the fourth book in Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea Series, where we take a a deeper look at the life of women in this world, meet new characters, say goodbye to old ones, and try to hold it together through the saddest section we've read yet. Queen Marissa won't stand disrespectful interference of burial rituals, Queen Tay gives a PSA for men to do dishes, and both were very confused at the way wizard celibacy was revealed. So brace for trauma, and join us as we discuss Tehanu by Ursula Le Guin.

This episode wraps up with a game of Astrological Signs, and classically, Tay and Marissa's best and worst character of the section.

Tehanu by Ursula Le Guin, Part One : Chapters 11-14

The Queens finish out the fourth book in Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea Series, Tehanu. In this episode, both Queens are confronted with multiple reenactments of their literal nightmares. Queen Tay wishes one theory had been correct so she wouldn't have to see a certain character, while Marissa kicks her feet with glee at the long overdue commencement of a relationship. We're following our favourite characters as they wield pitchforks, doctor up their enemies, and find themselves caught in a trap so tightly that only a dragon can save them. In other words, join the conclusion to this adventure as we finish out this instalment of the Earthsea Series, Tehanu by Ursula Le Guin.

This episode wraps up with both Queens presenting their reviews of the novel, followed by a returning favourite game: It's Giving. Lastly, Tay and Marissa nominate the best and worst characters of the section.

We get to see the creation of the school on Roke, a conversation about mercury that no one asked for, teenaged love, and an old friend while he was young and hot. Queen Marissa gets excited by a romance, Queen Tay gets upset over dirty feet, and both Queens stumble over names, because who knows how to pronounce anything? Join us for some laughs on our field trip through Tales from Earthsea by Ursula Le Guin.

The Queens get a little wild with a game of Smash or Pass, then top off the episode with their favourite and least favourite characters from this section.
