How do we walk with the Spirit? Is it as simple as walking and the Spirit joins us? In a way, it is as simple as that, but if we want to live lives liberated from the law and walk in the freedom of Christ, there are a few other steps we have to take. Today we continue in our message series in Galatians, Good News, diving into what it means to be free in Christ. Before we come to know Christ, we long to gratify our desires, our flesh. We live with internal passions to be fulfilled; every time we fulfill them, they grow. Once we have come to know Jesus and accepted Him as our Savior, we learn that those in Christ have crucified their flesh along with their passions and desires. Yet, we still may experience these desires from our old life. So, as we learn to walk with the Spirit, Jesus points out a few steps we should take as we walk alongside Him. We must recognize that we have an inner struggle that goes towards fulfilling our flesh, we should acknowledge the fruit that is growing in our life and put our flesh to death in Christ Jesus. When we walk with the Spirit and crucify our flesh, we will see godly attributes growing in our lives like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Have you found yourself reverting back to old habits and places of comfortability? Often this reversion happens because of our innate sin nature pushing us back into our old ways--but when we are in Christ we are called to freedom. Maybe you fall into the state of mind that you can be sufficient on your own and do it all on your own, Jesus deeply desires us to reject this thinking and stand firm in His freedom for us—the freedom of the Gospel. We are continuing in our Galatians series, Good News, studying the freedom from the law and security found in the Gospel. When we find ourselves going back to our old ways, habits, or sins, it's as if we are re-enslaving ourselves to the law and forfeiting our liberty in Jesus. Paul shows us that we lose the benefits of Christ, the scandal of the cross, and the motivation to love when we revert to the law and believe the lie that we can do it all on our own efforts. In some ways freedom is scary, we can find comfort in thinking that our faith is based on works, but Jesus is desiring us to know in deep ways that our faith is based solely by believing in the Gospel and accepting Christ as our Savior. Jesus saved us by grace alone, despite our flaws and shortcomings, He loves us deeply. We would be foolish to go back to the law and abandon a gracious Gospel and loving Father. Scripture has much to say about it though, so it seems important we discuss what God has to say. God makes it abundantly clear that sex was created to be shared within the covenant of marriage, as two become one. The stain of sin in this world has sadly tainted the view of sex, painting it in a way that one should explore their sexuality, rather than saving it for the scaredness of marriage. The Bible makes it clear that sex is a good gift from God, to be shared only in marriage. As we aim to honor God in our sex lives we see three truths within scripture—to delight in your spouse, honor wise boundaries, and understand the danger of adultery. Know that God extends grace to those who turn from their sin and walk away from patterns of sin. He will heal and restore anything that has been broken. Colossians 3:23 says we should “work heartily as for the Lord and not for men.” God commands us to work hard and to serve Him in all we do. In Proverbs, we find some examples of things that hinder us from fulfilling our call to work. There are three examples of obstacles we may face when it comes to work: laziness, distractedness, and selfishness. Proverbs 6 shows us that we have a calling to fulfill and that call is to work. We see in Genesis God giving Adam and Eve the call to tend to the garden and care for the animals. That was a privilege they held, given from God. Our words hold a lot more power than we may realize. Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.” How we speak to others truly matters. We jumped into a new sermon series, What God Says About, applying God’s wisdom to everyday situations. In our everyday interactions with others, it can be easy to be flippant with our words—not realizing what we are truly saying until after we have said it. God is adamant on the fact that our words bring life and cause death. We should be mindful of how we speak to others, aiming to speak words of grace and encouragement; even speaking less and listening more. When we interact with our brothers and sisters in Christ, we should speak the truth and challenge one another. This question sees more circulation around the Easter season, as the body of Christ celebrates the risen King. This Resurrection Sunday we are closing out our series, Believe, looking at the final week of Jesus’ life. The living King invites us to believe in Him, but it can be difficult when doubts flood our minds. Jesus invites us to vocalize our doubts and open up to Him. He isn’t shocked by our questions; He is patient and willing to guide us to seek the truth. Jesus knows our doubts, He answers our fears, and He blesses our faith. In scripture, we see Thomas, one of the disciples, doubted Jesus. Jesus answered His doubt with truth and cared for Him as He wrestled with the questions. Jesus is ready and waiting for us. How can others see Christ in you? A question, perhaps we all have asked at some point in our walks with Christ. We believe in Christ, but how do we extend that belief to others? This Palm Sunday, we are beginning with true belief, and how that belief in Jesus shows in our lives. As we enter Holy Week, we begin with looking at Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem, where the crowds placed palm leaves down as Jesus entered. They celebrated Him, acknowledging that He was there, in the name of the Lord. The Messiah was here, the one who would save us, the deliverer of Israel. In the days to come, they did not yet know what would come. As their belief in the Savior was evident in their celebration, we see how our belief shows through our lives. Renewal. How do we get it? Many think they are too far gone to find restoration; they feel stuck or even unworthy of it. But God tells us a different story. He says that we can come to Him with everything and ask for Him to restore us, and He will. In times when we have messed up or let someone down, it is easy for us to be full of shame and think that hiding is better. But God invites us into something different. He tells us that we can experience life transforming restoration and renewal, when we go to Him in humbleness, He is faithful to help us out of our pit of sin. When we are seeking renewal, we can ask for God’s restoration and respond to His grace with genuine worship. God’s restoration in us, should cause us to react in worship. Giving praise to God for what He has done in us and for us; giving testimony to others through what Christ has done in us. Admitting when we mess up is not easy. It is hard to swallow our pride and ask for forgiveness. Owning up to our shortcomings is difficult and it can be even more nerve-racking when we go to God with our failings and sins. Taking responsibility for our sins is an essential part of realizing our lack of having it together and our great need for Christ. As we journey on in our series, Confessions: Erasing Shame and Experiencing Renewal, we will see that an essential part of confession is taking responsibility for our sin. In Romans, we see that Paul states, “All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” When we were born into this world, we entered into sin, our need for Jesus is very great. And the first step we take in the process of confession is realizing our sin and owning up to it. In confessing before God, it is important that we acknowledge that God is just, confess our fallen nature, and receive God's wisdom. What a gift, that we do not have to do it alone. We can see where David was coming from in his efforts to cover up his sin with Bathsheba. But God calls us to step into His light and to confess our sins, so that we don’t continue on in silence trying to fix what we have tarnished. We are continuing in our new series, Confessions: Erasing Shame and Experiencing Renewal, this week we will be diving into Gods mercy and how He is faithful to show us mercy. When we appeal to the character of God and appeal to the cleansing power of God, we can experience His great mercy. Rather than carrying it on our own, the Lord is calling us to confess, surrender, release our grip on struggling to clean ourselves up. We can’t do it without Him. When we believe in Him and turn toward Him, confessing before Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us and to show us mercy. Confession is a hard subject to discuss. It can be uncomfortable to confess and be confronted by our sin. We are sinful people by nature, so sin is not inescapable, but we often have a reflex to run and hide when we do sin. Some may think why is confession so important for our walks with Christ? To that question, we look to the word of God. We are beginning a new series, Confessions: Erasing Shame and Experiencing Renewal, where we will look at 2 Samuel to better understand the role confession plays in our lives for us to find renewal. Today, we begin talking about this topic looking at David’s shortcomings when he gave into temptation and sinned against God. We see that the Lord confronts our sins so that we can experience renewal. To an extent, it’s as if we can have blinders on, where we can’t see the sin that tangles itself in our lives. What happens when one directly disobeys God? Or when someone goes as far as to blaspheme Him? That is dangerous territory to trod on. That's why scripture warns us of how serious it is to oppose Him. To see it in others is simple, but to admit it in our lives is never easy. Whenever we challenge, insult, or forget God's character and His goodness in our lives, we act in blasphemy toward Him. It is a serious thing, thankfully we have a God of forgiveness and mercy, and we can be forgiven by faith through Jesus Christ. Today, we are diving into another chapter in Daniel, looking at the fall of a king who opposed God. In this chapter, we see that God is sovereign over ungodly kings and kingdoms. We learn lessons from history and actively try not to repeat their past mistakes—it is the same for us as Christians. The word of God is full of stories of men and women who have fallen short, disobeyed God, forgot Him, and walked away, but thanks be to God that He never stopped chasing after them. We see that through their failings and mistakes, God is present, He picked them up, patched the pieces, and restored them. When faced with the direct command to bow down to a false image by King Nebuchadnezzar, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to bend their knee to a fake god. They had the courage to refuse and remain loyal to God alone; even if their refusal meant threats of death. Still, through the bravery of these young men, we see how courageous faith rejects idolatrous worship. As we fight in our present culture to stick close to our faith and values, we should reject cultural idolatry, refuse to compromise, and trust in God's deliverance. In 1 Kings 19, we see the aftermath of the defeat of the false god, Baal; that though it was a good thing, there was still some unhappiness in the end. This causes Elijah to fall into self-pity. Through his battle of self-pity, God comes in and strengthens Elijah. His conquering of self-pity can be beneficial to us when these times overtake us. God conquers our self-pity by calling us to himself, to his truth, and to serve.
