We live with internal passions to be fulfilled; every time we fulfill them, they grow. Once we have come to know Jesus and accepted Him as our savior, we learn that those in Christ have crucified their flesh along with their passions and desires. Yet, we still may experience these desires from our old life. So, as we learn to walk with the Spirit, Jesus points out a few steps we should take as we walk alongside Him. We must recognize that we have an inner struggle that goes towards fulfilling our flesh, we should acknowledge the fruit that is growing in our life and put our flesh to death in Christ Jesus. When we walk with the Spirit and crucify our flesh, we will see godly attributes growing in our lives like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Today we push forward in our study of Paul’s letter to the Galatians, discovering more truths that shape our identity. As we live in the freedom of the Gospel, we see that the law is powerless. With Jesus sacrifice on the cross, He abolished the law and the need to work for or earn our salvation. Paul helps us see that the purpose of the law is because of our sin, until God sent Jesus Christ to be the full atonement for our sins. What a privilege that we can be free in Christ and have the promise of adoption of faith in Christ alone. We read what Paul exclaimed, “For in Jesus Christ you are all sons of God, through faith...heirs according to the promise.” Through faith in Christ, we are no longer slaves but sons and heirs of God. God’s blessing comes by faith alone in Christ alone. In obedience to Christ, we must surrender our efforts and trust in Jesus, He has won, and we can have hope in Him. Paul asked direct questions to the church in this passage that allowed them to think through how they were experiencing the blessings of God in their lives. When seeking wisdom from God's word we will see that Godly wisdom brings peace and Godly wisdom takes action, while worldly wisdom produces chaos. In Philippians, Paul writes about his imprisonment due to sharing the Gospel, Paul is an example of how adversity can cause us to grow in Christ. Paul even exclaims, “for me to live is Christ, to die is gain.” We have an opportunity to bring the Gospel everywhere, we should not be ashamed of it, for Christ dwells in us if we have placed our trust in Him alone. Embracing adversity requires us to know that endurance inspires faith, we should rejoice in Gospel proclamation and recognize that adversity is a win-win. Colossians 3:23 says we should “work heartily as for the Lord and not for men.” God commands us to work hard and to serve Him in all we do. In Proverbs, we find some examples of things that hinder us from fulfilling our call to work. There are three examples of obstacles we may face when it comes to work: laziness, distractedness, and selfishness.Proverbs 6 shows us that we have a calling to fulfill, that call is to work. We see in Genesis God giving Adam and Eve the call to tend to the garden and care for the animals. That was a privilege they held, given from God. We should aim to speak less and listen more, to speak words of grace and encouragement, and to speak words of truth and challenge. As we strive to build each other up, our Heavenly Father encourages us to be careful in our words and to speak words that bring life. It can be hard to remain faithful to a God we can’t physically see, especially when our doubts drown out what we know to be true. Good news, Jesus isn’t shocked by our doubts! He invites us to bring our doubts to Him; He knows them and He will reveal the truth to us—we just have to let Him in. Jesus knows our doubts, answers our fears, and blesses our faith. They celebrated Him, acknowledging that He was there, in the name of the Lord. In the days to follow they did not yet know what would come. As their belief in the Savior was evident in their celebration, we see how our belief shows through our lives. In times when we have messed up or let someone down, it is easy for us to be full of shame and think that hiding is better. But God invites us into something different. He tells us that we can experience life transforming restoration and renewal, when we go to Him in humbleness, He is faithful to help us out of our pit of sin. When we are seeking renewal, we can first ask for God’s restoration and respond to His grace with genuine worship. God’s restoration in us, should cause us to react in worship. Giving praise to God for what He has done in us and for us; giving testimony to others through what Christ has done in us. Our response should be genuine praise back to Him for what He has done for us. God’s restoration leads us into worship. Today, we begin talking about this topic looking at David’s shortcomings when he gave into temptation and sinned against God. We see that the Lord confronts our sin so that we can experience renewal. To an extent, it’s as if we can have blinders on, where we can’t see the sin that tangles itself in our lives. On the other hand, we are aware of it and may turn our heads from seeing it. God lovingly confronts us with our sin because we are blind to it, at times we have despised the word of God, and the Lord is faithful to forgive our sin when we repent before Him. Our faithfulness to God is so vital, it impacts all who meet us. May the truths we have looked at in this series inspire and challenge you in your walk with Christ. As we walk through this world, we will face pain. That pain may be physical or emotional, and it may be caused by a brother or sister in Christ. When they hurt us, it can be difficult to come to a point of forgiveness; only being able to after conviction and stirring of the Holy Spirit. Jesus gives us several examples of forgiving those who hurt us in scripture, many times, Himself being the one turning the other cheek. We should forgive because we have been forgiven much and because it is the way of the kingdom. In the last few weeks, we have looked at Matthew’s account of Jesus’ birth and have seen many references to how Jesus fulfilled the prophecies recorded in the Old Testament. Here on Christmas eve, there is one more I’d like to point out! From the Old Testament to the New Testament, it may have seemed difficult to trust in the promise of God. His people were promised a king from the line of David, but had that line been maintained through all that chaos? Many people probably questioned God and doubted His ability to keep His promises. Christmas traditions are great! But how many of us have found ourselves at some point in a holiday season carrying on “the tradition,” but the reality is very different? Traditions sometimes can cause us to focus on the “joy” of Christmas while ignoring the harder or more painful parts of the season. This only makes the season harder and more challenging. We’re told, “it’s the most wonderful time of the year,” but what do we do when it doesn’t feel like it? We continue our Christmas series, Fulfilled: His Promise Kept, Our Longing Met, where we will discover how Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s promises to us. While exploring scripture that is not part of the “traditional” Christmas texts, we’re going to see, it has a lot to say to us when dealing with the painful parts of the holiday season and our lives in general.
