Now these gals rock out and scream lyrics because some lyrics need to be screamed. I am blown away by their presence, intellect, and natural compassion for human beings. We talk about some of the myths surrounding Metal and Punk music that have literally been given by different church groups in order to stop metal from corrupting our youth. Let us say, Metal and Punk are here to stay and there's nothing anyone can do about it. That's the point of it all. The authorities can never silence people if they refuse to be silenced. We cover a dynamic cross section of topics and find out that these young rockers really give a shit about what they're doing in music and otherwise. Their sense of community is unrivalled and beautiful. If we said anything at all, "do not go gentle into that good night..."

The Doctor is In

He takes us from his youth when he lied about his age to join the army, through many years embracing activism in one form or another. He talks about standing with folks because it's the right thing to do, which is his approach to living out his life in general. I'm grateful to know him and call him a friend.

This day, the calgary police service decided to engage both Doug and I in a heckling campaign playing out nearly, as we describe in the episode. Intifada, Intifada!

This week, our comrade and activist Wesam stops by and we discuss the illegal war in Iran and West Asia, as a whole, for American and Israeli control of the region. Our conversation revolved around the imperialist powers on this planet, hell bent on completely wiping out indigenous populations and creating a world far too bleak for me to imagine.
The Palestinian struggle is all of our struggle. It always has been. It's the struggle for life. The right to live without fear of genocide! For many this is still a far off dream. Those of us with passing or white complexion may never fully comprehend the suffering faced everyday by humans who have been set for extermination. Not yet anyway. We talk about the out of touch world, as it sits back while others massacres humans and preach peace in the same breath. Our conversation also circles the truth that if they come for you in the morning, they'll come for us in the evening. We illustrate the lack of safety for humans to exist as they are. Thank you Wesam, please keep up the good work in spite of the hatred ypu face everyday.

Recovery Talk

This week Steve from Stonewall Recovery Centre stops in for what we both hope is a monthly podcast discussing ideas of recovery, healing, "wellness", self harm, identity, and whatever else is going on in the world of recovery and at large.
This week we talk about recovery as a broad subject. The way it was always supposed to be. Broad and open ended because all of the "knowledge" there seems to be about recovery - changes everyday, as humans continue to figure out multiple ways to live, recover and heal. Treating illnesses and each other with compassion is a good start.
There is no business as usual while humans are experiencing genocide around the world at the hands of imperialist, human greed.
Keep talking about Palestine, Iran, Sudan, Congo, Syria, Lebanon...and all of the very real humans suffering at the hands of war mongers.
Please consider looking into mutual aid groups if you're interested in supporting other humans, who are there for even more humans. It sounds like maybe a good way to put humanity back into supportive work.

We talk about a lack of safety, due to a lack of accountability within twelve step groups and programs. We discuss the almost open r#&e culture in which victims become isolated while predators are protected. This is a microcosm of society at large in which we victim blame and remove accountability from the predators placing it firmly and continuously on those most effected by the assaults. Whenever Dani and I sit down, you can assume that there's a trigger warning for our episodes. We talk openly about subjects a lot of folks don't want to hear about because it not only attacks their sensibilities, but it reminds us all that the world is an increasingly and incredibly dangerous place, for some more so than others. We of course talk about being queer in a straight world and many other things. I fan girled for her a little bit and you'll see why. The queer kid in me recognizes a teacher I wish I would have had growing up.

A New Home

This week Darcy and I get together for a review of the last few weeks and it gets pretty wild. Mostly because I was there, as usual, yammering up a storm and laughing like a hyena. If you can stand the hyper active David, give us a listen. If not, give us a listen anyway. You'll hear Darcy's smooth voice sutbly calming the manic me. So there's that. We talk about protesting and things related. We talk about this city being exactly what activists have been telling us for years. At this point, if you can't see our city as a violent, cop city then you may be dead or under a rock.
I talk about supporting legal funds for activists like that for the Calgary People's Assembly, Stop The Stack YYC, etc. We discuss Freedom's Path Recovery Society and Voices in Recovery Podcast news. We also mention our friend, Taylor McNallie, who is constantly harrased by the Calgary police service. She was arrested by them once again while her child in the car. You may think it happens all the the time. It does to her and others every day. Their goal is to make her react so they can stack more charges.
You see the police do not care that she is not breaking the law. Their constant harassment of Taylor is not only unnecessary, it resembles daily torture and one more way for the police to keep her from living a normal life. They are afraid of her, of her relentless efforts to destroy the illusion many of us have of police agencies and our desperate need to abolish such. Know your enemy folkx. It's not an individual. It's the entire system and the police are the henchmen.

Protest Art

This week, Darcy and I discuss The Imprisoned Blogger, Othman Hamdan. We talk about the ongoing protests to end the genocide of the indigenous peoples, in Palestine and around the world.
I open up about the art piece I unveiled at a recent rally, using the old uniforms I once wore. The piece was born the instant, the Calgary Police Service decided to attack unarmed civilians at the university of Calgary on May 9th 2024.
Having been a support person, once dedicated to providing supportive counselling to officers on the job. This event, irreversibly altered my perception of the police and the government's/corporation's utilization of these police organizations to crush opposition to imperialism and colonialism.

Othman Hamdan

Our guest this week is Othman (Adam) Hamdan. His story of being persecuted, detained, and imprisoned because of his race, ideas, and kindness by the government of kkkanada and all of the vast resources at their command.
Is he bitter? Hard to sense even a slight bitterness when, in my mind, he has every right to bitterness and resentment. To fill his cups so to speak based on how these entities treated him.
He is not bitter. He is focused on sharing his story in hopes that he can be of use to those still suffering within the system and to help him sort through the pain left by being falsely imprisoned. He sheds light on the immigration system, or as it is applied to those kkkanada deems threatening.

One of my favorite humans on planet earth, Michelle Robinson, stopped by to kick off season 8 of the Voices in Recovery Podcast. We talk about racism because it exists and is the daily reality in the worlds we live.
Michelle explains pervasive racism entwined in every layer of our modern society and which is perpetrated against Black, Indigenous, and People of Color everyday. What might appear to be increased "crime prevention" within gentrified areas of any city could be something quite different - another example of "city organizations(law enforcement)", "business associations" and "communities" softly policing Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. The indoctrination into the mindset of white supremacy plays out daily in these incredibly harmful systems, which surround us.

Darcy and Dave

This week Darcy and I examine the constant racism within law enforcement and the government as G7 approaches us all. We examine the trauma of disconnecting from systems once becoming a part of them. The doubt, fear, confusion, and uncertainty of resisting the systems in power based on history. We have been shown time and time again what happens when people stand up against government powers and the henchmen they employ to protect THEIR interests only. I share about my own struggles with knowing police officers and refusing to talk to them in any capacity. As I mentioned to one or two of them this past week, I will be talking about them and at them, but not with them. I point out the obvious privilege that I carry being able to yell at the poe poe the way I do. We aren't sure if it's run of the mill nepotism and white privilege that protects me or if there are individuals within the police service watching out for me? I haven't been beaten up by members of the service yet so I'm thinking someone is watching my back in there and for that, we thank you, as I'm old and fragile.

Agnes's Story

Injustice

Since the recording of this episode, myself and other folks involved in the pro Palestine, end the Genocide movement have been approached by members of police intelligence officers from both the Calgary Police Service and the RCMP. They've approached most of us under the guise of "building community". Due to the RCMP's continued violence against indigenous people of Canada and the world, I refused to speak with them. If you're wondering whether you have to speak with them, you do not. No matter how nice they seem to be. It's always your choice in this country.

This week, our friend and regular guest, Wesam stops by and we talk about the continuous genocide and ethnic cleansing of Palestine, ongoing exploitation of African countries, protesting even though it might feel overwhelming, police violence in the name of state security, and many other subjects. We talk about the bogus charges the Calgary Police Service laid against him. How through constant pressure and fighting in court, he has had some conditions removed while awaiting trial. The Calgary Police Service has unlimited funds to punish anyone standing up against oppression. In the end we know the police service are performing for the cameras as they always do - as we approach the one year anniversary of the brutal attacks by both Calgary and Edmonton police services on unarmed students and supporters, including women and children. These departments have sold out the people of Alberta. Thank you for coming back on my friend. We appreciate all of the your work and presence in the community. The people united, will never be defeated.

Lia's Story

Nikk Goodswimmer

This week artist, frontline worker, activist, and advocate; Nikk Goodswimmer also known as PunkIndigenous (they/she 2S) is Stoney Nakota and Cree from Treaty 8 Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation. They share their incredible, painful and harrowing journey starting with the millennial scoop of 2000's. Where the federal government continued its awful practice of removing indigenous children from their families. Now it isn't to send away to residential schools, but into the very same system under the guise of foster care. Then to be placed in white, Christian foster care where as recently as ten years ago they held Nikk down and cut their hair. Our governments are apologetic about abuse and genocide, all the while committing atrocities under different names and guises.

Kyle's Story

She believes that her life would always be like the lives of her family. Her mother was a victim of the 60's scoop and we learn that every step the government took to eradicate her family, led her to recovery. Justice for Palestinians Calgary

This week our friend, Wesam from Justice for Palestinians Calgary stops by with a UofC student to share about continued police brutality, violence, and ongoing bullying.

We talk about May 9th, 2024 when the Calgary police escalated and attacked unarmed students and protestors at the University of Calgary. We talked about how Edmonton police doubled down on the violence and brutality May 11th at the University of Alberta. Wesam and friend, share the details as to what happened then and what has been happening behind the scenes as a result of police targeting their protests, gatherings and fund raisers. The violence was again furthered by the Calgary police on Sunday, September 15th, 2024 at Tomkins Park when they attempted to interrupt a peaceful protest. Police deployed 4 horses, twenty bike officers, and a solid 20-40 mixed law enforcement officers as back up. There were barely fifty protestors on scene when the police escalated to violence as a show of force to strike fear in anyone contemplating future action against the state.

Even though our conversation was very open and we share a lot of vulnerability. We fully understand that the police watch, listen and follow us on line and in person at times so we are incredibly vulnerable to them. We share our anger, fear, and confusion at times.

If you don't think "your police" would do certain things to keep people silent, criminalize poverty/unhoused, and weild the constant threat of your loss of liberty/finances all the while they convince you they're acting in your best interest...think again.

We recognize that many activists through the years in Calgary have faced and been subjected to this type and worse violence, suppression, and surveillance.

This week, I sit down with my close friends Michelle and Darcy Robinson. We talk about twenty years of sobriety, anti racism work, racism, literature, and the huge concept of cancelling people. I have said this before and I am sure that I will say it again at some point; it always comes back to how many people did not cancel me when I was living like a man with no relations and the result has been my continued survival and continued education. The support by other humans is not only essential, but often includes humans who may not see the world as I do. They may even see the world dramatically different, yet still somehow are able to care for others along their path. I encourage everyone to find their way through the mire. Allow anger to be real and treat it as the gift it really is. Through the anger, there is more light to be found. This journey is never ending.

This week Darcy and I try and understand all that's been happening in our vast, hurting world. We both came out confused, somewhat sleepy and laughing so the episode is probably ok. One thing I try and keep in mind, as we discuss topics from the universe around us and across the planet is my very privileged position. Not only am I a middle aged, white male living in North America - I was also born into the middle class. I try to consider the idea that just because it hasn't happened to me, doesn't mean it isn't happening to others. Best way I've found to learn about what others go through is to listen and get involved. I also had to learn how to stay quiet and not defend my biases but allow them to fade away as I get to know real living humans. I feel this is a lifelong process for someone like me coming from so much privilege.

Police: A Rape Culture?

We talk openly and frankly about the experiences we have had in our different capacities. I had no idea the depths of sexism/misogyny, Islamophobia, and homophobia in law enforcement culture until I was clear of it for a few months. Able to process the damage properly. With the executive branches of law enforcement failing to protect their officers so dramatically, specifically, and systematically. They do this with blatant disregard for the public, for the member, and for the members families. How could any of us know...thank you for having the courage to stand up and say something. I'm disgusted that the title of this episode is incredibly suitable for this conversation.

Adam joined the Canadian military and he found himself suffering in silence because it was illegal to be gay and in the military at that time. She is a harm reduction advocate yet after sitting with her, getting to know her even just a little bit, it is obvious that she is a human advocate. She not only hopes for, but works towards a more compassionate and tolerant world in which people don't have to be further shamed in order to obtain help. She is a strong advocate for alternative treatment options other than the twelve step models. Her experience within some of these programs sheds light on the potential and often darker side of things. This dark side is equally as real as the life saving capabilities of any potential program. John's Story

Our guest this week, John, from Vancouver came in and shared his story of recovery. John began drinking in junior high and he remembers liking it a lot right away. As he grew and changed, his drinking continued to be destructive. The progression of his illness provided him with increasingly challenging consequences. He began utilizing cocaine alongside the alcohol and this ultimately led him to losing his family, home, reputation, etc. John has spent more than ten years sober and working on the life that he is proud of today. Benji's Story

This week's guest, Benji stops by and shares his journey with us. He and his family moved up to Canada from California after the Rodney King assault, the not guilty verdicts for officers involved and the following 1992 riots. His journey through alcohol and drug addiction is filled with grief, love and loss. From coming out as a young person to finding his group of humans later in life where he would meet his long time partner. They were together for 13 years when he passed away. This sent Benji towards his bottom that would see him find sobriety and recovery. His life now is a testamony of becoming open minded and willing to make new, healthy choices. He tries to be of service in as many ways as possible in his life today and for that, we thank you Benji! The world needs you just as you are.

Chris's Story

This week my friend, Chris stops by to share his story with us. Fear was a regular part of Chris's life growing up. From a difficult home life, Chris endured bigotry at the hands of the church for being gay. As life in active addiction progressed, Chris found himself falling deeper and deeper into the darkness. Chris was raped and when he reported the offense he was demonized by the police. This intense trauma coupled by being retraumatized at the hands of law enforcement added fuel to Chris's spiral down. Chris became homeless, showed violent tenancies in connection with his intravenous drug use, and found himself in the sex trade.

Chris has now been sober for 9 months and focuses on giving back in many different ways! He spends a lot of time helping 2SLGBTQ humans adjust to a life in recovery and is a part of opening Calgary's first 2SLGBTQ treatment center in Calgary. We are extremely grateful you are out there Chris, thank you for your courage strength and hope my friend.

Priya's Story

Our guest this week, Riaz stopped by and shares his story. He spoke of being

adopted from India and how grateful he is to have been brought to Canada. He spent a good deal of time working in the restaurant industry where he noted that his drinking and using became more of a lifestyle of necessity. At one time he went to university for culinary arts and ended up dropping out due to his addiction. His faith has been transformed through his recovery although he experienced some relapses. Riaz inevitably left the food industry to work on and support his recovery in a more direct manner. He moved into the helping profession and is now a peer support worker for one of the wonderful treatment centers in Calgary. Thank you Riaz!

Schizophrenia

Alisha's Story

This week Alisha stops by and shares her experience, strength and hope with us. Her journey takes us through difficult childhood experiences into adulthood. In adolescence, she moved a lot, changing schools frequently and discovered anything that took her away from the pain of home. As she continued to fall deeper and deeper, an accident and an addiction to opiates amongst other drugs; brought her swiftly to her knees.

From the ashes of an old life, she remains sober and clean, works with women regularly and encourages other women to get and live a sober life if they choose. She faces any challenges, which arise as her journey continues to unfold. Although some relationships with family had been extremely strained, Alisha works diligently to rebuild what can be and face what needs to be.

Today she puts more and more energy into her recovery and less energy into the old, toxic habits of her active addiction life. Prison, and the impact government funding could have on the lives of people struggling before prison is necessary. We also talk about a complete restructuring of our justice system to accommodate the shift in focus. He talks about the ten years spent in active addiction and the damage, which looks like PTSD today, which he now lives with and is learning to treat. He shares how reconnecting with his culture more and more every day helps him find purpose and direction in his daily life. If he didn't tell us all about it, I might never have guessed the amount of pain in his heart, mind and spirit and how he expressed that to the world around him. Jerad reminds me of so much, but mostly to keep judgment and assumption to myself.
He has made terrible choices and for those, he will answer. My hope is that we strive to understand more and more why humans do some of the terrible things we do. Instead of forever pointing our swords at punitive punishments.

Cheryl's Story

This week's guest is Cheryl. It was over a year ago when she lost her son Jacob due to a drug overdose. Jacob was a kind, compassionate, and caring man, who found himself fighting an incredible fight for the last few years of his life.
Within Jacob's story is a young man, whom was bullied in school, confused by mental health difficulties, and tortured by a deep pain. Cheryl talked about compassion being such a vital necessity and the lack of it within the medical community at times when dealing with mental illness/addiction.
Cheryl watched, as the system repeatedly let her son down until his death. Where Cheryl began her outspoken mission to end stigma and mistreatment by speaking with all of the wonderful staff, who had helped Jacob in his final days.
She is hoping to help and encourage creating compassionate environments for healing our fellows with unseen wounds. Those with wounds running much deeper than our eyes can see.

We had a great chat about some positive potential growth within the ranks of the RCMP in her area if not one day overall. I am pulling for her and for the members to be given the space and ability to care for their individual and group mental health. Healthy and supported officers lead to positive enforcement standards, which could lead to more positive commitments to the communities they serve. She shared about Bob, who after being with Anita for a while became a therapy dog. We love Anita and Bob. Bob is the best boi.

Dakshima's Story

This week our brand new friend, Dakshima, drops by and shares her journey. She comes from Sri Lanka where it is against the law to be yourself if you happen to be a lesbian and she proudly is. In Sri Lanka, the consequences of being found out as a lesbian can be ten years in prison. Not only could she not be herself, she was raised believing that who she was, was wrong and a crime. Her life was an incredible challenge for many reasons when she first arrived in Canada. One of these was being a lawyer when she arrived. Once in Canada, she had to work multiple jobs while she went back to university. Recognizing that she would basically have to start at the beginning if she was to practice law, Dakshima went into social work. She runs a program for new immigrants to Canada, who are also experiencing difficulty with identity. After sitting with her, there is no doubt that if you are struggling with identity and the multiple challenges facing immigrants coming to Canada, she is someone who can help. Our guest this week is Shayne. His story begins in an alcoholic, abusive household where he found himself experimenting with both alcohol and cannabis at an extremely early age. His addiction took him in and out of prison until he came to Calgary for a fresh start. For a few months it seemed as though the geographical change was working. He found himself in and out of treatment centers living the street life in Calgary, drinking and using whatever drug he could and he was unable to stay clean and sober. When he found himself ready to do the work it takes to get and stay sober, he did exactly that. In sobriety today, he chooses to clean house, trust God, and help others and it seems to be working big time in his life today. Thank you Shayne, we appreciate you!

This week we sit down with mister Chris B. I cannot say enough kind things about him although his kindness stands out. Not because he's perfect because he is not, but because he's genuine, compassionate and searching. Our friend, Chelsea stopped by to share her recovery journey. Early on in her life she experienced the loss of her father. She survived multiple life altering challenges to find herself fighting for her life in recovery, as an adult, from alcohol and drug use. Covid, A Year in Review

Sitting down with our guests and hearing their incredible stories continues to be inspiring and incredibly enlightening. The hours spent with humans continues teaching Darcy and I in complex ways. To be better humans; better brothers, friends, partners, sons, father, and uncles. To do better work in our community, become kinder and more compassionate in all of our affairs. Each person is inspiring and motivational in their own way and there is no doubt they have an impact on others as well. Sometimes the real mirror for me happens when Darcy and I sit down together and reflect on our time hearing stories and living life. These conversations often allow me a deeper acceptance of how my defects act themselves out in my life today. This is a not so gentle, but necessary, reminder that no matter how good I feel, the work never ends. I must remain diligent in the process of my growth and life.

Kerry's Story

We are very grateful to have Kerry join us to talk about his journey. Kerry is a second generation Residential School survivor and a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, with which he turned to addiction in order to numb the pain. After witnessing his Mother struggle through her own issues of abuse from the Residential School upbringing and numerous suicide attempts. Kerry found himself in jail where he eventually made the decision to change. Now Kerry finds happiness in helping others with their addictions, and is involved in the Canadian Centre for Male Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse.

Don's Story

We are honoured to have Don join us this week. Don is a Veteran of the Canadian Military, after leaving the military he decided to head back to school and get some education to help him do what he wanted, which was to help other veterans.

Don now works for Homes for Hero's whose mission is to provide a caring, innovative and comprehensive solution to homelessness among our veterans. Not only do we have a great conversation about the important work that Homes for Hero's is doing and what they have planned for the future. He opens up about deployment overseas and some of the incredible difficulties faced by our Canadian men and women when they serve in other countries. Martina's Story

Martina's story begins in an orphanage in Egypt, which turned into a strange journey to Canada. She found the world of substance abuse at a young age, which showed her a life in and out of jail where she eventually began her recovery journey. Through the use of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy she has maintained her recovery and is now trying to focus on her own healing and understanding life without the fog of substances.

Jessica's Story

Nicque's Story

We are happy to have Nicque join us to talk about the joy she finds and the things she does to create joy in her life. Struggling early on with substances fed her depression, self harm, and disordered eating. She talks about how she built a life that she thought was expected of her and how it all looked wonderful from the outside, but on the inside it wasn't her and it wasn't the life she really wanted. After trying new activities she was able to find some peace and connection. She has since completely changed her life, travelled, and is still trying as many new things as possible. Her mood and spirit is contagious and infectious, thank you Nicque!

Taylor's Story

Taylor sits down with us and talks about her experiences and how she feels being in recovery. Taylor faced racism and bullying in school; she quickly found out she fit in with older kids where she had access to substances and people who understood her. After a very personal and painful loss, Taylor began to increase her substance use. Despite moving across the country her addiction got worse until she attempted to overdose. She has been on the path of recovery ever since her overdose attempt. We want to thank Taylor for being open and sharing her courage, strength and hope with us.

Renee's Story

We were honoured to sit down with Renee and hear her amazing story. Renee remembers her first abusers and from there we are taken to a life of masking pain at a very young age. She was in several abusive relationships sending her deeper into addiction. Tony's Story

We are happy to have Tony join us to talk about how he came to recovery and how he has changed in some ways dramatically through the process. Tony's story starts with divorced parents, bullying, and the discovery of substances to numb out feelings at an early age. Tony kept things together, as best as he could, but with the loss of custody of his child he went back to a life he didn't want. With some setbacks along the way, he was able to rebuild some relationships, and is still working on rebuilding others. He spends a lot of time today giving back to other humans in many different ways. Thank you Tony, for your story and for all you do.

Maddy's Story

Maddy Joins us and tells her journey through addiction, violence in her family and early experiences with alcohol. Enduring a great deal of bullying during her school years led her to move on to other substances and eventually dropping out of school and becoming homeless by grade 8. During homelessness, she experienced exploitation, violence, a number of attempts to get sober with no support, and thoughts of self harm. Finding herself in her first meeting at 17 years old she began to make a new life in recovery. Now she is happy in recovery and continuing her education in post secondary as a social worker. Her life has been pretty incredible.

He is the Lloydminster Local Immigration Partnership Coordinator, a board member and community engagement chair of the Africa Centre, past president of the Sierra Leone Association of Alberta and founding board chair of the Clareview Multicultural Centre. He is presently a member of the Black Coalition Against Racism Black-CAR recently formed due to the out cry of Black Lives Matter.

Chelsea's Story

We are fortunate to have Chelsea sit down with us and take us through her story. Starting with her parents divorce when she was younger, Chelsea increased her partying and consumption. Chelsea eventually found herself in training for the RCMP helped to escalated her drinking which continued until she moved, changed employers and found her life falling apart around her. When she first sought help she wasn't convinced she really needed to change but it didn't take long for her to realize she had to commit to the process. Now she is living life to the fullest in recovery.

John's Story

This was such a great conversation with John about workaholism and its effect on a person's life. Growing up with a constant reminder that he was never good enough managed helping John down a path of focus into complete obsession with work. Work became where he was able to feel that he had value. It was during his second marriage and recovery from an injury that he was given a copy of the book, Chained to the Desk by Bryan E. Robinson. This was where he started realizing and recognizing that his workaholic behaviour was unhealthy. When it threatened his marriage John took action and reached out for help. John went on to eventually organize the first workaholics anonymous meeting in Calgary. He continues involvement with recovery because it has brought his amazing daughters closer than ever before. He tries diligently to help others struggling with workaholism as a corner stone of that recovery. Thank you my friend.

Amber's Story

Amber nervously joins us to share her story. At a young age Amber felt like an oddball and that she didn't really belong anywhere. She began stealing and trying substances when she was young. She eventually found a social group based on partying and substance use. After a geographical change, she began a relationship with her dealer, which eventually led to her going into drug court. Amber has been on her recovery journey since her program was completed. She now focuses on raising her son and maintaining a positive mental focus in her life. Black Lives Matter with Nika

Nika joins us to talk about the Black Lives Matter movement in Calgary, what the next steps are, and why it is so important for people to support the fight for equality of all people and the end of systemic racism. She talks about getting educated, active, donating to the cause if possible, voting for new, fresh ideas and progressive leadership, and signing petitions that can lead to change. Obviously with systematic racism, we need to dismantle and re-work said system that sees humans oppressed as an acceptable byproduct of human "progress".

Kasey's Story

Kasey begins his story with feelings of being disconnected and alone, which led him to search for who he was. This question led him down the path of substance abuse, in which he found some sense of identity. A place where he could numb the pain of life and loss. Through a growing darkness surrounded him, he found this new path in life from the depths of his illness. He has reconnected with family, reconnected to his love of music, and he finds true purpose in helping others. We enjoyed having Kasey join us and are honoured to have him share so openly.

Anita's Story

We had a great time sitting with my good friend Anita and her journey into recovery. She started off drinking at parties in junior and senior high school, moving on to even more drinking while attending college. Anita went on to a career where alcohol was part of the culture. Where sobriety was frowned upon if not overtly discouraged. During her career she moved around throughout Canada, witnessed and experienced harassment within the organization. She experienced trauma from the types of things she was being exposed to at work. That and the lack of supports from her organization contributed to heavier and heavier alcohol use. Finally she was able to get the help she wanted and desperately needed. Today she continues making huge steps on her road of recovery. Dealing with alcohol dependancy and PTSD has been a challenge and she faces that with great courage and openness. Thank you Anita.

Marco's Story

Marco dropped by and shared his incredible story of family and recovery from trauma. He shares about emotional and physical survival in one of the most difficult professions humans occupy. From his personal and family life, through many difficult calls stacked close together came the challenge of holding space for hurting and in many cases, dying humans and the loved ones left behind. We talk about suicide and the impact on families for generations. We were fortunate that he talked about intergenerational trauma that his mother's family experience. Lona's Story

Jim's Story

Jim joins us, sharing his story from childhood into young adolescence where alcohol slowly replaced his other mechanisms of survival. Jim learned early on that he could use his Asthma to gain attention and he used that whenever he could. He believed that drinking was a rite of passage, which he justified and allowed it to become more and more dominant in his life. His first steps to recovery came after a major car accident while he was under the influence. He struggled with recovery until he started to make spiritual connections, allowing that to help him find the courage and strength to remain sober.

Crystal's Story

Randy's Story

Randy has many years of sobriety, but despite this he works daily to stay sober and recover. He has worked through addiction to alcohol, prescription medications, has been through a difficult divorce - eventually finding strength to come out as a gay man. He talks about religion rejecting him, childhood abuse, suicide attempts, and his life long journey to strengthen his spirituality. Randy is open about the PTSD he suffers from related to his experience as a law enforcement officer. Now he volunteers in correctional facilities, helping those struggling with addiction and recovery. He attends a weekly first responders recovery meeting and is active within the LGBTQ2S and Indigenous communities.

Boban's Story

Wes's Story

From his first drink in Grade 8, Wes travelled a long road to recovery. Along his journey; self harm, feelings of not fitting in, replacing alcohol with pain medication, and the host of symptoms which can accompany alcoholism were mainstays in his life until sobriety. He was surprised to find the tolerance and acceptance, as he did in twelve step meetings. His life today is drastically different from what he dreamt where he's a grateful husband, father and business owner in Calgary.

Recovery Centre in Mexico
