Please note: Louise has brought to our attention that a further explanation of positive predictive value (PPV) is required to clarify what this means for the dogs involved as many people will not realise what a PPV is or what it means for interpreting the test.

PPV is in relation to dogs that have tested positive already, rather than dogs that have not yet been tested. It relates to the question that veterinary professionals need to ask once they have a dog with a positive result in front of them: 

"Given that this dog has tested positive, what is the probability that this is a true positive?" 

The answer is the PPV of the test in this situation and the value of the PPV interacts with both the specificity of the disease and with the prevalence of the disease among the population of interest.

In the case of the Dogs Trust data presented in this presentation, the answer is that if the specificity is 99% (the APHA claim this figure for their parallel testing SAT and iELISA combined approach), and the prevalence of Brucella Canis is 1% (based on the Dogs Trust data and corrected to reflect excess cases above the expected rate of false positives), roughly 1 in 2 dogs will be a true positive, and 1 in 2 dogs will be a false positive. 

This is very different to a claim that one in two UNTESTED dogs will test positive and important that listeners appreciate this.

He chairs the Animal Welfare Working Group of the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe and was President of the British Veterinary Association from 2015 – 2016. He has contributed to animal welfare and conservation projects around the world and is a Director of Vet Sustain. 

In 2017 Sean received the inaugural World Veterinary Association (WVA) Global Animal Welfare Award for Europe. His first book Through a Vet’s Eyes: How We Can All Choose a Better Life for Animals was published on 28th April 2022.

In this episode, Sean reflects on his time as BVA president and the experiences he had from a young age that inspired him to ask difficult questions about ethics and animal welfare.

We discuss Sean's writing style and inspiration for writing his book. We also explore different options for higher animal welfare standards whilst balancing the need for food production. 

Sean delivers a fantastic 60-second CPD about a pre-purchase consultation and the best way to approach people who want to get a potentially problematic pet. We also ask a reflection question for our audience to consider, enhancing their CPD outside of the show.

Petrina is a Pet Behaviourist and Dog Trainer with 15 years in the business. She is a Board Member and fully-assessed Member of The Association of Pet Dog Trainers (no 01238) and a Registered Animal Training Instructor with The Animal Behaviour and Training Council – a regulatory body that represents animal trainers and animal behaviour therapists to both the public and legislative bodies.

We discuss Petrina's journey with her career as a dog trainer, exploring the various training courses and qualifications she has taken to become the expert is she today.    

Petrina defines separation anxiety and shares practical knowledge about how you can solve these issues with your dog. She also dispels some myths about dog behaviour and humping.

Aside from her work with separation anxiety, we also discuss scent training dogs, working with humans and her lastest role working with a puppy training app called 'Zigzag' which provides puppy training lessons and additional expert support.  

She explains what emotional intelligence means and how to use those skills to have better relationships and communication skills. We discuss the difference between neurolinguistic programming and cognitive behavioural therapy whilst Anne-Marie hypnotises us, sharing a mindfulness meditation to improve emotional wellbeing.  Anne-Marie also provides fantastic strategies on how to deal with difficult conversations and how to disagree with someone, drawing examples from veterinary medicine. 

Cat qualified as a veterinary surgeon from Bristol Vet School in 2003 and currently works in a small, independent small animal clinic in Sheffield. 

We discuss the intricacies of balancing the job of being a vet alongside being a TV personality, how the logistics of filming work around veterinary emergencies and what he's learnt as a result of working in TV. Aside from 'The Yorkshire Vet', Julian has also appeared on The Wright Stuff as a frequent guest as well as Springtime on the Farm and Big Week at the Zoo. 

Julian grew up in Castleford, West Yorkshire before studying his degree to become a Veterinary Surgeon at Cambridge University. He was inspired to become a vet by famous Yorkshire Veterinary Surgeon and Author James Herriot- he's even authored a few books himself! Julian's grandad was also a big influence on his choice in career, and we talk a little about their shared love for animals, the TV adaptation of "All Creatures Great and Small" and flat caps. Julian has almost 25 years under his belt as a mixed-practice veterinary surgeon living in North Yorkshire and was a partner in a practice that was once the surgery from which Alf Wight (James Herriot) worked - talk about full circle!

Pete is well known as a media veterinarian with regular national tv, radio and newspaper slots in Ireland and a weekly column in the Daily Telegraph since 2007. Pete is known as "Pete the Vet" on his busy Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages, regularly posting information on topical subjects and real-life cases from his clinic. He also writes a regular blog at www.petethevet.com and has written several books. Most recently, he has launched Petfix Club, a new website that provides a veterinary guide to help give pet owners online assistance as an extension of his work as a public educator.

Sam qualified as a veterinary nurse in 1999, working in both general and referral practice. Since qualifying, she’s achieved an advanced diploma in both medical and surgical nursing and a Certificate in Education. Sam began her teaching career in 2007 and is one of the directors at Abbeydale Vet Nurse Training, a specialist teaching centre who train and support Veterinary Nurses and Practices.

'Martin qualified as a Veterinary Surgeon in June 1995 at Onderstepoort University, Pretoria, South Africa. Once qualified, he left South Africa to gain experience working in England and worked in Shropshire as a large/small animal vet.

A year later he returned to South Africa to manage a large small animal practice in Johannesburg where he also helped manage an emergency veterinary clinic. In 1998 he worked in ParaPara Umu, New Zealand in a single man small animal clinic. Here he developed his skills as a single practitioner and decided to specialise in small animal medicine. Since then he returned to the UK where he began his specialisation in Canine and Feline Internal Medicine. He is now continuing to develop that interest and his interest in dentistry, which he is now an RCVS Advanced Practitioner in.'

'Adrian graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in 1996 and spent several years working as a small animal vet in the south of England. After leaving general practice in 2011, he worked for a pharmaceutical company as a Veterinary Advisor and developed an interest in the development of antimicrobial resistance and the strategies that can be used to slow this process.

In 2014 Adrian returned to small animal practice as a locum and began work as a Case Examiner for the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in their professional conduct department, later being appointed as a Chair (Fitness to Practice Panel) for the Nursing and Midwifery Council in 2017. He also works as a Lay Member for the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.'

Dr. Martina has published several papers about feline and canine medicine and is a member of ISFM (International Society of feline medicine), ESVD (European society of veterinary dermatologists) and PDTE (Pet dog trainers of Europe).

Join us as we sit down with Dr Faye Bethell! From Binturongs to Bob the Goldfish, Faye talks about her fascinating work with exotic animals including her work with zoo species. She also shares some insightful 60 Second CPD about the use of IV catheters in different species of animals! 🐵🐊

'Faye qualified from the Royal Veterinary College, London in 2009 and has since been working in busy practices around Norfolk and gained her European School of Veterinary Post Graduate Studies General Practitioners Certificate in Exotic Animal Practice in 2012 and becoming a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Recognised Advanced Practitioner in Zoological Medicine in 2017. She opened Toll Barn Veterinary Centre in January 2014 and has a keen interest in medicine and surgery of all species including exotics. Outside of work Faye enjoys looking after her many animals and playing the organ at her local church.'

We also talk about Wolfgang's love of endurance sports - particularly cross-country skiing - and his adventures travelling across Europe!

'Wolfgang studied veterinary medicine in both Hannover and in Oslo and after a short spell in mixed practice in his native Germany, he moved to the UK where he worked for six years at a small animal clinic in Surrey before establishing the Virginia Water Veterinary Clinic near London in 1999 where he still remains as Clinical Director. After joining BSAVA’s International Affairs committee he became the UK FECAVA Director in 2009 and was elected a Board member in 2011. In 2017 be became the FECAVA President. Wolfgang is a general companion animal practitioner with a keen interest especially in feline medicine, soft tissue surgery and oncology.'

Jo tells us about her passion for rabbit care and how LagoLearn Ltd came to be such an important educational resource for anyone working within the veterinary industry. We also discuss her life outside of work, including the Goodwood Festival of Speed and times when she has badgered parliament (Pun intended 😉). She also shares her experiences with sepsis and how important it is to raise awareness of this life-threatening infection. 

'Jo has worked in the veterinary industry since 2007 and has always had a special interest in rabbits. She owns and runs LagoLearn Ltd, providing rabbit specific CPD to veterinary professionals in both the UK and internationally. She also spends a significant amount of voluntary time working with charities and parliamentary groups to highlight animal welfare and is proud to be Senior Vice President of the BVNA (British Veterinary Nurse Association.) Jo attends many events, gives lectures and writes articles for the veterinary industry as well as the general public and schools. She has received several awards over the years including the Blue Cross Veterinary Nurse of the Year in 2014, an RCVS Innovation Award winner in 2017 and the IFAW Animal Advocate Award in 2017.'

'Alasdair qualified from Cambridge in 1990 and has focused on small animal surgery through his career. He has post-graduate qualifications in veterinary radiology, small animal cardiology, small animal surgery and medical education. He received his Fellowship for Contributions to Clinical Practice in 2017 and is an Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Surgery. Alasdair has numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals as well as in continuing education publications.'

Steve is also an endoscopic wizard, and shares his best practices and techniques and how he teaches these to his students.
