Parents and Families are an integral part of the Trinity Western story. Supporting students as they adjust to university life will greatly contribute to their success. At TWU, we value parents and the role they play in their son or daughter’s life. The Parent & Family Network is here to serve and support parents on this journey.

Janice Nikkel (’92; ’08, MA) is the Director of TWU’s Parent & Family Network. She met her husband, Peter (’92), when they were history majors at Trinity. Married 29 years, they have four children—Tori, Lincoln, Virginia, and Lewis (all of whom graduated from TWU). The university has played a significant role in both Peter and Janice’s families. Janice was the youngest of four sisters who attended TWU from Ontario while Peter’s grandfather, Jim Westman, was one of the visionary men who walked the grounds over 50 years ago to pray for and determine if this was the land God had prepared for Trinity Western. Suffice it to say, they have deep roots here.

Janice continues to journey alongside a number of TWU parents. Through the Parent and Family Network, parents are able to connect with each other, pray together, and stay connected with what going on in the TWU community.

She teaches Cultural Diversity, spiritual integration courses (Spiritual Formation and Spiritual Resources in counseling) and clinical courses (Internship, Practicum and MFT Studies). Dr. Boldut also holds a small private practice as a Marriage and Family therapist, working primarily with families who adopted, families who have a member with developmental disability, acquired brain injury or chronic illness. Outside of work she loves nature, hiking and camping.

Conversation With Dr. Vince Bantu

Dr. Vince Bantu is an assistant professor of church history and Black church studies at Fuller Seminary in Oakland, California. Dr. Bantu teaches primarily on Fuller’s Houston campus, where he also serves as a liaison to the William E. Pannell Center for African American Church Studies and networks with African American churches, pastors, and students.

Prior to coming to Fuller, Bantu taught in various capacities at a number of colleges and institutions, including Nyack College, New York Theological Seminary, North Park Theological Seminary, the Center for Early African Christianity, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and Covenant Theological Seminary. He has years of pastoral experience in African American, Asian American, and Hispanic churches, as well as extensive involvement in multicultural urban communities. Dr. Bantu's deepest passion, "is to make the resources of the theological academy available to [his] community."

He is the author of A Multitude of All Peoples: Engaging Ancient Christianity's Global Identity, as well as numerous articles on global Christianity. Dr. Bantu is also a host of FULLER Studio (a podcast that walks through the books of the Bible).

Conversation With Dr. Temple Smith

Dr. Temple Smith is the Strategy and Education equity consultant for the Center of Public Health Practice at the Michigan Public Health institute (MPHI). Her current research explores college-aged populations and the ways poverty impairs opportunities, collegiate matriculation, and academic performance. Her research connects empirical findings to influence both pedagogical practices and collegiate culture and programming. Dr. Smith is dedicated to advancing retention capacity among college students who strive to overcome vulnerable circumstances due to systemic disadvantage. Today, we welcome Dr. Smith for a rich conversation to take us to the end of Black History Month.

Emmanuel Kwizera | James 4:1-10

Emmanuel Kwizera is the International Missions Director of African Enterprise, based in Nairobi, Kenya, a position he has held since 2015. Born into a Christian family in Rwanda, his father was a Presbyterian pastor and church planter. His mother, an elder and preacher in the Presbyterian Church of Rwanda, founded a children’s ministry called Mwana Ukundwa (Beloved Child). During Rwanda’s 1994 genocide, Emmanuel lost over 100 relatives. In 1998, following a period of great confusion after encountering such suffering, he gave his life to Jesus and embarked upon a journey toward healing and forgiveness. Having been heavily involved with the Lausanne Movement since 2009, he is pursuing a master’s degree in organizational leadership at African International University. Emmanuel is married to Kunda and has three children.

Cheryl Jean-Paul | TWU Women's Basketball

Internationally, in 2019 Cheryl was the head coach of Canada’s FIBA U16 Women’s America’s Championship team, winning a silver medal. She has also been a key coach within Basketball BC, as the head coach for the U14 girls’ red team in 2011, the U15 girls’ red team in 2012, and the U16 girls’ team in 2015. Furthermore, as the assistant coach for the U17 girls’ team, they won silver at the 2013 Canada Games.

Dr. Delphine Fanfon | James 2:14-26

Originally from Cameroon, Delphine holds a Doctorate in Strategic Leadership with an emphasis on Global Consulting from Regent University and two master’s degrees – one in Intercultural Studies from Fuller Theological Seminary and another in Counseling from Regent. From a young age, Delphine has never been satisfied with the average but actively seeks the Lord for clarity on her two-fold life’s purpose – youth empowerment and leader development. She pursues both with unquenchable zeal.

Delphine currently serves as the Africa Leader and Cameroon Country Team Leader of LeaderSource SGA, and is the founder of Me4real International - an organization which helps people discover their purpose and equips them to live it in their generation. She believes that the transformation that Africa needs can only come through a new breed of healthy leaders who actively build others. Today, we welcome Delphine to take us through the next section of our James series.

Andrew Evans | TWU Rugby | Testimony

Andrew Evans helped relaunch the Spartans men's and women's rugby programs in 2019 as TWU's Director of Rugby. Prior to taking over as the Director of Rugby, Evans was the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach with the Canadian National Men’s Rugby Team, including with Canada's men's team at the 2015 Rugby World Cup. Additionally, Evans has more than 10 years of experience working with Canadian Olympic and Paralympic National Sports Organizations and is using this experience to develop TWU into a top rugby program in North America.

In the Spartans first year, the women's seven program earned a sixth-place finish in the eight-team Canada West Sevens Series, while the men's program garnered wins in 15s over the University of Washington, University of Oregon and Western Washington University. The men's sevens side earned a fourth-place result at the Western Canadian 7s Championship and also won the Shield Championship at the West Coast 7s tournament in San Francisco.

Dr. Shane Wiebe | James 1:22-27

Dr. Shane Wiebe took over as the Director and Head Coach of Trinity Western University's Track & Field and Cross Country Team in 2018. In his two years as the head coach, Wiebe has led the Spartans to two conference medals, helping guide the women's cross country team to a silver medal at the 2019 Canada West Championships and the men's track and field team to a bronze medal at the 2020 Canada West Championships.

Wiebe, who was previously the Spartans Track & Field and Cross Country Head Coach from 1997 to 2002 and was also a national-level decathlete, joined TWU after spending the previous 15 years as the lead pastor at Southwest Community Church in Kamloops, B.C. As a coach, Wiebe, who has his NCCP Level 3 Track & Field Certification, has been the sprints, jumps and hurdles coach with the Kamloops Track & Field Club since 2015, where he has worked alongside Canadian Olympic bronze medal-winning shot putter Dylan Armstrong who coaches with the club.

Carolyn Arends is the Director of Education for Renovaré, a far-reaching organization that encourages and nurtures personal and spiritual renewal. She continues to be available on a select basis for speaking, retreat facilitation, concerts, worship leading, and songwriting and performance seminars. With 12 albums released, 3 critically-acclaimed books, 2 Dove Awards, 3 Juno Nominations, Carolyn has blazed a path in Contemporary Christian music.

In addition to her busy touring and speaking schedule, Carolyn has been a regular columnist for Christianity Today, Faith Today, and CT Women, and has served as an adjunct professor at Trinity Western University, Regent College, ACTS Seminary, Pacific Life Bible College, Columbia Bible College, and Prairie Bible College. She has a degree in Psychology and English from Trinity Western University and a Master of Arts in Theological Studies from Regent College. She lives in Surrey, BC with her husband, Mark, and their young adult children Benjamin and Bethany.

The first African American to earn a doctorate of theology from Dallas Theological Seminary, he has been named one of the 12 Most Effective Preachers in the English-Speaking World by Baylor University. Dr. Evans holds the honor of writing and publishing the first full-Bible commentary and study Bible by an African American. Dr. Serena Wu is an associate professor in accounting at Trinity Western University. Before joining TWU, she has been a faculty member at Smith School of Business, Queen's University, for nine years. Dr. Wu has taught at all levels of financial accounting, including introductory, intermediate, and advanced accounting. Today, Dr. Wu shares her story of coming to faith in Jesus, and how from then on, her life transformed more than she could have ever imagined. Take a listen.

Dr. Bryan Dunagan | Job 5:1-16

As pastor of Highland Park Presbyterian Church, Dr. Bryan Dunagan is passionate about helping people of every generation find and follow Jesus, for the flourishing of Dallas. Bryan grew up in Texas, and attended Stanford University, where he played lacrosse and discovered his love for the outdoors. He holds graduate degrees from Regent College in Vancouver and Fuller Seminary in Southern California. Prior to his role at Highland Park, Bryan served as the teaching pastor of Atlanta’s Peachtree Church. Dr. Dunagan also serves on the advisory boards of Fuller Seminary Texas and Advocates for Community Transformation. Take a listen to Dr. Dunagan's message as we continue our Job series.
