This is the story of a young man, Vincent Marks, bold and strong willed. He joins the RAF and spends 6 years in service before returning to civvy street. There he seeks stability and security, he believes a uniformed, disciplined profession will deliver that and he becomes a Prison Officer.

But some of the inmates are friendly towards Vincent, but they clearly aren’t his friend. He gets drawn into a web of deceit and he commits criminal offences to appease them.

But Vincent is being watched, he’s caught, arrested, interviewed and charged and now he has to face a life on the other side of those prison bars.

________________________________________________________

Our next series is about the murder of a businessman , a well known character in his community; savagely attacked and left for dead. Some days later his family made the painful decision to switch off his life support. Three young men were arrested, interviewed, charged, convicted and imprisoned. Was this, as one of those incarcerated explains, a time when justice died?

This gripping two-part series follows Vincent Marks, a young man once respected in his RAF career. With limited opportunities for advancement, he leaves to seek stability in civilian life, joining the Prison Service.

But prison life isn't what he imagined. Isolated from colleagues and drawn toward prisoners, Vincent makes choices that lead to his downfall — he’s arrested, charged, and ultimately imprisoned himself. The story delves into themes of coercion, manipulation, and vulnerability, exploring how someone once held in high regard becomes a convicted prisoner.

Welcome to our 10th case - The Murder of WPC Yvonne Fletcher. This is episode number 2. If you haven't heard the first episode yet, please take a listen here: [Episode1]

Our pre-season episode is here: https://pod.fo/e/24428f

On 17th April 1984, a number of the Metropolitan Police officers were on duty in St James Square, London. At that time the Libyan Embassy occupied No 5. The officers were to police a demonstration which consisted of supporters and dissenters of Colonel Gaddafi, the Libyan leader.

It was at 10.18 that gunfire was discharged from the first floor windows of No 5 St James Square. Many anti Gaddafi demonstrators were hit and injured. One of the officers, Yvonne Fletcher, was also shot and fell to the ground. She was immediately tended to by the officers around her and then removed from the danger. Standing next to Yvonne that day was her friend and colleague, PC John Murray. John accompanied Yvonne to hospital, he made a promise that he would bring those responsible to justice. Yvonne died shortly afterwards.

John Murray has worked and campaigned tirelessly since that fateful day to keep the promise he made to his fallen friend. We intend to release a series later this year telling the story of what led to Yvonne’s death and what has happened in the years since. It has been described as a story of ‘espionage, betrayal, terrorism and corruption’.

However, John invited us to attend the 40th Anniversary Memorial for Yvonne. It was a well attended event on a sunny spring morning on the street where Yvonne fell 40 years earlier. This short ‘pre episode’ was recorded minutes before and after that memorial service with some of her colleagues.

Eventually Tony is released to the UK but the police are on to him, he is once again the subject of police surveillance. He goes to ground, he puts together a gang of ‘misfits’, a prison governor, a boxer, a banker and others. But the police have set up an operation to catch Tony and his accomplices.

The story is familiar, but how does it all end? Is there an inevitability to it? A well respected barrister who defended Tony at some of his trials gives his thoughts on the man that he knew, a rare insight into the professional relationship that a lawyer and client have.

The story has been told in these episodes, largely by Jason, Tony’s youngest son, the author of ‘The Old Man and Me’. But what does he make of the life his father lived? How has the family been affected by Tony’s criminality? And what can he now do to help the forgotten children of those people who commit crime and are incarcerated as a result.

Is this a new career path? Of course not, it's his next adventure, counterfeiting millions of American dollars and he uses the art as a guise for perfecting the production of cash notes.

Within months of release Tony’s on the run from the Police. He meets Crystal and deceives her with his charm and lies. After capture, trial and conviction he is handed a lengthy prison sentence but Crystal remains loyal until he embarks on his plan for release - drugs. She cannot expose her family to this criminality and the marriage that was conducted within the prison walls ends in divorce.

Listen to the early years of Tony Spencer’s life.

A young man finding his way in the world but crime plays a part. He meets Jane, they are just teenagers when they marry and she falls pregnant with their first child. But Tony’s criminality sees him sent to Borstal. Over the next few years their family grows but Tony’s is still involved in criminality. He builds an empire of second hand shops and gymnasiums, this is legitimate business and delivers a level of success. But then he needs crime to support the businesses.

Tony turns to the one thing he thinks will bring him the cash injection he needs to keep his businesses afloat; crime. He robs a bank at gunpoint. The consequences of his actions are grave, 10 years imprisonment. Whilst Tony and Jane spin a story that Dad is at ‘college’ to protect their young children, the truth is it’s a strain on the relationship.

We released our three part series back in 2021. A major contribution to our review, research and ultimately the podcast was from Monika’s younger sister, Erika. We’ve kept in touch with Erika since that time. So we were delighted when she announced she would be visiting the UK with her husband, Tom.

Another contributor to that podcast series was Steve Thrift. He was a police officer with Thames Valley police back in the 1980’s and met both Monika, who he found charming and delightful and Michael, a very unnerving person. Steve has now written a book about the case, ‘Telling Lies’ and he too collaborated with Erika when researching the book.

One sunny afternoon we met up with Erika, Tom and Steve in rural Buckinghamshire, the area where Monika had lived and where her promising young life had been cut short by the person who should have cherished her the most, Michael.

Come with us to that meeting and the journey we went on, in order that Erika could walk in the footsteps of her beautiful sister, still so sadly missed.

In the Autumn of 1980, a young aristocratic Englishman, Michael Telling, was in Sausalito, a city in Marin County, California, across the Golden Gate Strait from San Francisco, USA. He was riding a special edition Harley Davidson motorcycle. A chance meeting with an American couple, Lou and Elsa Zumsteg, their daughter Erika and other friends, whilst out for a motorcycle ride, was to change their lives forever...

Welcome to the final part of our #truecrime investigation into the murder of Monika Zumsteg Telling. In this third episode we discuss what happened after Monika’s headless body was discovered in a wooded area near Exeter Racecourse. We also talk about how Michael had tried to cover up the murder; which had happened five months earlier when Monika was shot and killed and how he had kept Monika’s body in the outdoor Sauna at Lambourne House. Followed by his arrest and subsequent trial in 1984.

Violent crimes and murders. They can affect and leave deep scars on even the most strongest of families. So we again talk with Erika (Monika’s sister) and discuss how the Zumsteg family tried to cope with their loss and the deep pain it caused them over the years.

If we can, we hope we have helped give Monika a voice during these three episodes and helped tell her sad side of the story to all of you.

This is the final part of our investigation into the story of ‘Operation Julie’, which was a UK police investigation into LSD production by two drug rings during the mid-1970s and resulted in the break-up of one of the largest LSD manufacturing operations in the world.

In this four part series, we have been interviewing one of the undercover officers involved in the operation; Stephen Bentley and discussing the twists, turns and dangers of the investigation. As well as the people he had to get close to. We’ve also talked about wider issues within undercover policing.

In this last episode, Stephen talks about wrapping up his undercover work in LLanddewi Brefi and planning to take part in the joint police raids which will target 87 properties in Wales and England, bringing down the different LSD production gangs.

But what happened to ‘Smiles’ and will Stephen see him again? Also what was life like for Stephen after the operation was over? What did he do next? Was he affected by living as a different person for so long?

Researched, produced and presented by John & Sally.

Narration by Richard Ashwell.

In the new episode of ‘True Crime Investigators UK’, we look at the tragic death of Michael Pritchard, a delivery driver for Business Express in the Staffordshire and Derbyshire area. Who on Wednesday the 12th November 1997, was murdered by a young man who tried to steal his van and in doing so, ran him over and killed him.

The murder is still undetected and as John was originally the family liaison officer in the case; this is still an investigation that he often thinks about. We hope by looking further into what happened on that day and talking to Michael’s widow Hilary, we can tell you more about their story and ask you to help us catch the people responsible.
