Notes from Macaloney:
The new-make underpinning this single malt took “World’s Best” at the prestigious 2020 World Whiskies Awards. This is the first single malt outside of Islay to use Canadian barley peat-smoked to 54 ppm at the distillery in a proprietary soaker-smoker. Whiskymaker Dr. Graeme Macaloney studied the traditional peat-smoking process in Islay, recreating it here on Vancouver Island. Matured in Portuguese red wine barriques.

Nose: Medium peat smoke, wood ash, floral notes, fruit, heather, lemongrass, juicy malt, nutmeg & cinnamon

Palate: Creamy, very smooth and pleasantly warming. Big peat with waves of peat smoke, heather brush fire, wood ash, and tropical fruits. Finishes with floral nectar, a dry malt sweetness, coconut milk hint of salt and lingering smoke.

ABV: 46%

Tasting Notes from Bruichladdich:
Decades have passed since this unpeated spirit ran from the stills in our ethereal, Victorian stillhouse. The stillmen who were present in 1994 would have no concept of its destiny; that it would eventually become the eighth iteration of the notorious Bruichladdich Black Art. This spirit would take many weaving journeys within our loch-side warehouses. Each cask it met has been identified and nurtured over time under the tenureship of our Head Distiller. All with one ultimate purpose in mind. Few responsibilities are as daunting as the composition of this cuvee. Lesser distillers would be unwilling to release their finest casks completely unaccounted for, totally in secret. And yet, those in the know of our alchemic release, are fully trusting in the hands of Adam. Over eight releases now, this unaccountability has been justified.

Each year our Distillery Manager, John Campbell, crafts a limited edition malt to celebrate the friends of Laphroaig and friendship (“Càirdeas” in Gaelic) in general. Càirdeas 2020 is a marriage of our distinctive single malt Scotch aged in two different types of wood. While some matures in our typical way, in charred ex-Bourbon barrels, the rest is poured into second fill ruby Port barriques. Both are blended together to finish their maturation in red wine casks. This particular aging method lends honeyed sweetness, dark chocolate richness and pink peppercorn spice to the signature Laphroaig taste of medicinal smoke and ocean salt. Here's to friendship.

Notes from Bruichladdich:

11.1: Exposing the structural brilliance of our pure, unadulterated Octomore super heavily peated spirit, our 11.1 edition is powerful, understated and vibrant. Underpinned with a delicate balance of smoke and sweet vanilla from the ex-American oak casks, this single malt has spent just 5 years in contact with fresh first fill wood. The presence of peat on the palate is huge, and yet is incredibly balanced with clean fruit and floral notes. Distilled in 2014 from the 2013 harvest of 100% Scottish barley then filled into active ex-American oak, this high provenance, high peat single malt is a fitting embodiment of how quality ingredients demand less time to reach maturity.

11.3: Comparing Octomore 11.1 and 11.3 gives one of our finest lessons in stratospheric smoke and barley terroir. While both editions are malted to a Brobdingnagian 100+PPM reading, the differences in barley character from the respective growing region is ever present. Our Octomore Islay barley is grown each year by friend and farmer James Brown, on Octomore farm itself. It is harvested, malted and distilled separately, even from our other Islay barley harvests, in order to become a single field, single vintage single malt.
