Ron Hicks – have filed bills that would attempt to amend state law following the passage of the Second Amendment Preservation Act (SAPA) last May. The act, which went into effect in August, made it illegal for law enforcement officers in Missouri to enforce certain federal gun laws – among them is the federal law that prevents convicted domestic violence abusers from having guns. The proposals have three main parts. They would allow courts to prohibit a person under a restraining order from having or buying a gun while the order is in effect. They would require the courts to inform the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the FBI when a person is convicted of domestic assault. And, they would make it a crime for anyone who has been convicted of domestic violence to possess or own a firearm. While the legislation has bipartisan support, it still faces a hefty challenge this session. Thanks to Jason Hancock of the Missouri Independent for his reporting on this issue. Marine veteran Lucas Kunce, 39, reported raising nearly $840,000 during the three months that ended Oct. 1. That far outpaces his main rivals for the Democratic nomination — former state Sen. Scott Sifton raised $222,000 and businessman Spencer Toder raised $12,000. Kunce still trails the Republicans in cash on hand, reporting $670,000 in the bank in his most recent disclosure report compared to U.S. Rep. Vicky Hartzler’s $1.6 million; Eric Schmitt’s $1.2 million; U.S. Rep. Billy Long reports $540,000, and former Gov. Eric Greitens came in dead last, with only $200,000 on hand. -Sophia Donis of The Columbia Missourian reports that The Boone County Sheriff’s Office, along with other local law enforcement groups, will hold a prescription drug take back event Friday and Saturday. This two-day event aligns with the DEA’s National Drug Take Back Day on Saturday. In a Facebook post, the Boone County Sheriff’s Office said “The benefits of the Take Back event include the fact that these prescription medications will not fall into the hands of our youth or those who may suffer from addiction,” Proper disposal also helps protect the environment by preventing medications from being flushed down the toilet, contaminating ground source water. The reporter alerted the state of social security numbers present in the plain text of a webpage. The method of viewing the source code labeled as "hacking" consists of pressing key F12 or right clicking and selecting "View source" on any webpage. Nonetheless, the reporter is now under investigation by the Missouri State Highway Patrol. -Chanel Porter of KMIZ ABC 17 reports over 1,000 Missourians were infected with COVID-19 on Sunday. The Missouri positivity rate has climbed to 7.6%. -University of Missouri system allows classroom mask mandate to expire for its four campuses. Masks will not be required, but rather recommended.

State representative Martha Stevens will not seek reelection in 2022.

-Tessa Weinberg of the Missouri Independent reports: Missouri earmarked $3 million from federal COVID stimulus funds to a training program to certify home health care aides. However, in the midst of a nurse shortage, the state of Missouri has not implemented the program. Instead, they have diverted these funds to other COVID-19 needs and ignored public questions.

-COVID susceptibility and age: Emily Oster's March article in The Atlantic magazine claimed that "Your unvaccinated child is like your vaccinated grandparent." Critics noted the article downplayed the risks to children and their subsequent retransmission. Oster later issued a response on her website standing by her statement yet apologizing for the headline's lack of nuance. However, 7 months later, data shows that unvaccinated children under 12 appear to be at less risk than vaccinated people in their 30s and 40s. While subsequent data demonstrates the risk of COVID to children without preexisting conditions are so small they are hard to quantify, data shows vaccines are still a powerful form of risk reduction for adults.
