The Poor Man’s Covered Call is a very specific type of spread. As you know we’ve been covering option spreads for several Coffee With Markus Sessions.

We have an entire playlist discussing the pros and cons of each type of options spread.

In this video, we’re discussing the difference between trading stocks, covered calls, and the poor man’s covered call.

Trading Stocks

Let’s take a look at trading stocks first. Let’s say that you’re bullish on a stock like Boeing. You might purchase a decent amount of stock, let’s say 100. Right now this stocks strike price is $180. If you purchased 100 shares of Boeing, at $180 dollars each, this would require $18,000 in purchasing power. If the stock increases by 10 dollars, to $190, you stand to earn $1,000 in net profit. So you’ve risked $18,000 to earn $1,000.

Trading Covered Calls

In this example, let’s say that you’re still bullish on Boeing. And in the short term, you expect an upward movement in price. Since you already own the 100 shares of Boeing stock, you can sell a $200 Call Option against these shares. If the stock price increases to $190 like you expect, you’ll earn an additional $450 on top of the $1,000 you’ve already earned. If we see a decrease in stock price, the covered call acts as a hedge. In this example, if we saw a downward movement to $170 you would lose $1,000. But because you sold a 200 Call option contract and received a premium of $450, your net loss would only be $550.

Poor Man’s Covered Call

When would you trade a Poor Man’s Covered Call? When you don’t have the $18,000 to buy 100 Boeing shares! When do you trade a covered call? When you expect the stock to stay above the current price and move slightly higher. Instead of buying a stock, you would purchase a deep in the money call option at a later expiration. When looking for a call option deeper in the money, we’re trying to find one with a Delta of 0.95. This means for every dollar the stock moves, the call option is gaining .95 cents in value.

We’re buying a deep ITM call at $71 which means the capital required to take this position is only $7,100. As you can see this is a fraction of the price to purchase the stock outright. At the same time, we will sell the 200 Call option. Similar to the covered call. But instead of owning the stock at a price of $18,000, we purchased the ITM call option and sold a 200 call option.

if the underlying stock price moves from $180 to $190 you would make $1335 because the Delta is 0.95 which means it’s only increasing 95% of the value.

The profit on this type of position isn’t as high as a covered call, but it’s much more than owning the stock outright, with much less risk and less capital.

Yesterday was a big day for the markets…

You could make the argument that it was the most important day of the year and probably of the next 4-6 months.

It’s kind of crazy to think that one man has so much power and control over the economy, don’t you think?

People are literally analyzing his micro-expressions when he talks to determine how the market will react…that’s pretty wild if you ask me!

So yesterday, Powell came out more “hawkish”, simply meaning they would be slowing down asset purchases and will be taking other actions to slow down inflation…

…the odd thing was, this type of news isn’t normally well received by traders.

Despite this, the markets ripped higher and it looked like the bulls had taken control once again.

But as I’m writing this email, the Nasdaq is down nearly 2%...

So with all of this volatility, how should we traders avoid getting chopped to pieces?

This is a question I’ve received a LOT over the last few weeks, so I’ve decided to host a special training where I’ll discuss how to thrive in volatile conditions.

The Covered Call Strategy is one of the first strategies that new traders start trading. Traders might use a Covered Calls on stocks that they have in their portfolio for longer periods of time.

For the specific example that we’re going to cover today, we’ll take a look at JP Morgan (JPM). If you were holding JPM stock in your portfolio before the pandemic, chances are that you are underwater.

For the purpose of full transparency, I do not own or hold any JPM stocks. I typically only hold stocks between 5 and 25 days.

Ep 182: How To Trade Option Debit Spreads On tastyworks

We've talked about How To Trade A Vertical Spread, Call Debit Spreads, Put Debit Spreads and Put Credit Spreads.

What I like about Debit Spreads is the reduced cost and they reduce the "break even."

For this example, I'm using tastyworks.

I use the PowerX Optimizer to find the best stocks to trade.

When trading there are 3 things you need to know:

1) What to trade

2) When to enter

3) When to exit

TGTX:

- Enter at 20.43

- Expecting stock to go as high as 25.37 (profit target)

- Stop-loss set at 18.61

The PowerX Optimizer told me:

-Trade the 20 call w/ an expiration of 8/21.

- Spend no more than 2.10 when buying this option.

- Max Risk = $210 (you can't lose more than you pay for the call)

- Max Reward = Unlimited

- Breakeven = $22.41

Here's what I did:

- I sold the 25 call for 0.50

- My cost is now 2.10 - 0.50 = $1.60 ($160)

- Max Risk = $160

- Limited if the Stock reaches $25 or above.

- Breakeven = $21.60

- Reward Cap = if stock reaches $25 or above.

So by trading a spread here, we reduced our cost and breakeven.

On June 15th, Hindenburg struck again, this time targeting popular sports gambling and fantasy sports company DraftKings (DKNG).

Some well-known investors in DraftKings include Walt Disney (DIS), WWE (WWE) owner Vince McMahon, and owner of the New England Patriots, Robert Kraft. DraftKings also has lucrative partnerships with the NFL, MLB, NHL, NASCAR, UFC, and the Dish Network.

A lot of potential brands could be hurt by these allegations if proven true.

Wood is well known to target companies she likes long-term that are beaten down. Some examples of this include her continued support of Coinbase (COIN) and Teladoc (TDOC) during their prolonged dips.

How much DraftKings did Wood buy? She added $42 million worth or 870,299 shares following Hindenburg’s report. The stock now represents the 19th and 17th largest holdings in each ETF respectively.

… Who will win?

Judging from DraftKings’ rise the next day, it looks as though Wood and Ark Invest have taken round one from Hindenburg.

Ep 165: When To Sit On Your Hands In Trading

I'm currently trading two strategies:
- Strategy #1 is The PowerX Strategy
- Strategy #2 is The Wheel Strategy

So when is it best to not trade stocks? When is it best to not trade options? When should you not trade at all?

There are days and even sometimes weeks in the markets, where the best thing to do is sit on your hands' (i.e. do absolutely nothing).

On an average day, The PowerX Optimizer (my proprietary trading software) will provide me with around 8 potential trade setups. The beauty of the system is that it takes your ego completely out of the picture.

What do I mean by that? Well, it's simple really. I've paid a team of developers to program my trading plan and money management system into this piece of software I've named the PowerX Optimizer. It doesn't care about news, tweets and it never has days where it's in a good mood or bad ;)

What do I look for in a stock:
- Looking for huge gaps in the stock
- Trendability to both the upside & the downside
- How this stock performed over the past year had I been trading it with the PowerX Strategy.

It simply runs the program quickly and objectively, so I know I'm always getting the same types of setups every time. But here's the thing, there are going to be days when the best thing to do is to sit on your hands.

Today is looking like it may be one of those days...and you know what, that's okay with me. As a trader, you always want to be in the markets because obviously if you're not, you're not making money but it's also to realize you're not losing money either. And this is really the key point because on days where you don't have ANY trade setups that look good, that day you don't put on a trade.

Because if you try and force it, more than likely you're going to lose money. Let me tell you from my experience that is definitely a losing proposition. So in today's episode, we're going to take a look at the broader markets to see what's in store for us this week.

Ep 164: Options Trading During Earnings

How does earnings season can impact option trading? Earnings season happens four times a year, and is when corporations reveal their financial results for the previous quarter.

Results of a company's earnings report can have a major impact on the stock price, and options will often price in the expectations before the event so it's likely that options premiums are more expensive.

This can impact your trading with implied volatility.

What makes up an options price?

- Implied Volatility: the market's expectation for future volatility. Traders don't know which direction the stock will go, but once a company reports earnings, there is no more uncertainty.

So why is this important?

- As an options buyer, higher implied volatility means that you are paying more for your contract & are at risk for a volatility crash.

How is IV measured?

You compare the implied volatility to the stock's historical volatility for exactly the same time frame.

The IV measures the market expectation for future price action & the historical volatility measures the volatility for a stock that already occurred, and all you have to do to see how the IV compares to the HV.

For historical volatility, it makes sense to look at it in 10, 20, 30, 40 days increments.

Why you shouldn't sell options into earnings.

Earnings plays are hit-and-miss, & sometimes stocks jump dramatically.

It's best to focus on SRC profits:

- Systematic because I like to trade what I see and not what I think.

- Repeatable and by trading my plan.

- Consistency.

With The Wheel strategy the idea is to get paid while you wait to buy the stock by collecting premium by selling puts.

Ideally higher IV is good for this and as a rule of thumb, I look for stocks with an IV, of at least 40%. but I don't trade into earnings, no matter if you're buying or selling.

Earnings are a wildcard and there's just too much uncertainty. It's always good to know when they report earnings if you have any open positions, whether you're buying stocks or selling stocks so that you're not caught off guard.

For everyone, the answer to this is different. What are your monthly expenses? How much do you need to cover your housing costs, groceries, recreational expenses, etc.?

What are your profit expectations? What is the ROI you expect to earn with your trading strategy?

These are all questions you must answer first before you can figure out how much money you have to have in your trading account to be able to live off of your profits.
