Welcome to the Memories Podcast. I'm your host, Jackson Nguyen, and I am a biochemistry senior at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. I am also a trained community representative of the Massachusetts chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. Memories is a podcast/interview series that features in-depth, one-on-one conversations with leading global experts across a wide range of fields to explore Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and dementia from numerous lenses. Through these conversations, I hope to deepen public understanding of AD and share the voices of those working to make a difference around the world. Memories is a personal passion project of mine where I hope to engage in fruitful conversations with experts to learn more about Alzheimer’s and spread awareness of its devastating condition to my community. Thank you for joining me!

This episode was very meaningful to me as I was able to first-hand learn from a physician and hear about her unique insights and perspectives regarding dementia care, a field I am longing to pursue. Dr. Medina shared with us her remarkable journey into medicine and geriatric care extending all the way back from Pakistan. She highlighted the existing stigma surrounding dementia care, and the importance for our society to work together to reduce that stigma. She also emphasized the importance of early dementia diagnosis as that could open our door to numerous diagnostics, testing, and treatment options. Last but not least, she offered us numerous healthy and lifestyle changes to take better charge of our brain health today!

It is incredible physicians like Dr. Medina that inspires and gives me so much hope for the future of geriatric care.

Chapters:
00:00 Introduction to Dr. Anila Medina
03:14 Inspiration Behind a Medical Career
05:03 Understanding Dementia: A Personal Perspective
06:24 Stigma and Misconceptions Surrounding Dementia
10:21 Cultural Awareness and Diagnosis of Dementia
11:35 Navigating the Emotional Landscape of Dementia
13:17 Tailoring Care Approaches for Individuals
16:03 The Role of Non-Pharmacological Interventions
19:20 Hope for a Future Cure
22:05 The Multi-Specialty Aging Brain Initiative
25:10 Advice for Brain Health and Dementia Prevention
29:16 Changing the Approach to Dementia Care
30:02 Key Takeaways and Closing Thoughts

Recently, I had the delightful opportunity to sit down and chat with the renowned Dr. Allen Power, a geriatrician, published author, and clinical associate professor of medicine at the University of Rochester.

Our conversation challenged the status quo regarding the current culture of care and how pills, such as antipsychotics, are currently used as a bandage approach to manage symptoms associated with dementia. Dr. Power shared his 40+ years of experience in geriatric care and dementia, advocating for an experiential approach that prioritizes well-being of individuals. We discussed how a systemic change is needed to truly transform our existing institutionalized model of care to ensure all patients receive the dignity, respect, and positive quality of life they deserve.

Chapters
00:00 Introduction to Dr. Allen Power
02:17 Journey into Geriatrics and Dementia Advocacy
04:28 The Medication-Driven Approach in Dementia Care
09:00 The Impact of Antipsychotics on Patients
15:07 Case Study: Charlie's Experience in Two Nursing Homes
17:11 Balancing Pharmaceutical and Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions
18:39 The Role of Non-Pharmacological Approaches
22:27 Understanding Well-Being in Dementia Care
27:31 Systemic Changes for Better Care
32:03 Unmet Needs and Communication in Dementia
35:20 Unlocking Memory Care: A New Perspective
37:01 The Institutional Model of Care: Challenges and Characteristics
40:59 Transforming Nursing Homes: The Greenhouse Project
45:48 Accessibility in Care: Bridging the Gap
49:06 Rethinking Aging: Community and Inclusivity
50:43 The Experiential Model of Care: A Shift in Perspective
01:01:02 Overcoming Obstacles: Changing the Narrative
01:04:03 Finding Hope: Transforming the Culture of Care
