She is a film and media historian and a professor at the University of Minnesota. Trained in filmmaking, she has worked as a film critic and curator in New York and Prague. Her criticism has appeared in venues such as Reverse Shot, Cinepur, and Film Comment, where she is a former editor.

Few words in the English language are as misunderstood as “like.” Indeed, excessive use of this word is a surefire way to make those who pride themselves on propriety, both grammatical and otherwise, feel compelled to issue correctives.

Rather than focusing on famous leaders, Fox tells the story from the perspective of ordinary Parisians swept up in the uprising: street vendors, seamstresses, bricklayers, petty criminals, and soldiers, all struggling to survive and make sense of revolutionary ideals as the city descends into chaos.

Through multiple voices, the book explores the hopes, conflicts, and betrayals among the “rabble” — the people history usually overlooks — in the last desperate days before the French Army brutally crushes the Commune.

His reporting and commentary have appeared in The Washington Post, Foreign Policy, and Rolling Stone, and has helped overturn prosecutions and challenge censorship laws. He has been invited to testify before the U.S. Congress, the Australian Parliament, and the Council of Europe, advocating for protest rights and press freedom. 

The Black Utopians: Searching for Paradise and the Promised Land in America 

In addition to her scholarly pursuits, Tamara is the co-founder of The Wandering Scholar, a 501c3 nonprofit focused on making international travel accessible to high school students from underrepresented backgrounds. This work has, in turn, shaped her writing and creative projects: she has written about race, culture, and travel for Slate, The Guardian, The Root, and Columbia Global Reports and co-hosts a podcast, Why We Wander, which covers all things travel.

Professor Walker specializes in the history of slavery and gender in Latin America and its legacies in the modern era. She is also the author of Exquisite Slaves: Race, Clothing, and Status in Colonial Lima, which was published by Cambridge University Press in 2017 and won the 2018 Harriet Tubman Prize from the Schomburg Center for Research on Black Culture.

 is a journalist and author based in Tulsa, Oklahoma who works to bring neglected black history to light. He was nominated for a National Magazine Award for his reporting in Time on the 1923 Rosewood Massacre. 

His new book is titled Built From the Fire: The Epic Story of Tulsa’s Greenwood District, America’s Black Wall Street. 

Victor’s book is a multi-generational saga of a family and a community in Tulsa’s Greenwood district, known as “Black Wall Street,” that in one century has survived the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, urban renewal, and gentrification.

In this role, Michael represents clients in a variety of civil rights cases, including police accountability, education, employment, and climate justice.

Dr. Keohane is an economist with more than 20 years of energy and environmental policy experience in academia, government, and the non-profit sector, most recently as Senior Vice President for Climate with the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), where he led all of EDF’s climate work in the United States and globally.

Her new book is titled The 272: The Families Who Were Enslaved and Sold to Build the American Catholic Church. 

His book tells the untold saga of John Randolph’s 383 slaves, freed in his much-contested will of 1821. Few legal cases in American history are as riveting as the controversy surrounding the will of Virginia Senator John Randolph (1773–1833), which—almost inexplicably—freed all 383 of his slaves in one of the largest and most publicized manumissions in American history. 

His new book is about a young American lost in Russia. An FBI-cover up. A mystery leading from Washington to the heart of the Kremlin's war in Ukraine. 

He examines how laws that criminalize resisting arrest harden white social dominance and deepen black racial subordination.

Mody contends that successive post-independence leaders, starting with its first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, failed to confront India's true economic problems, seeking easy solutions instead. As a popular frustration grew, and corruption in politics became pervasive, India's economic growth relied increasingly on unregulated finance and environmentally destructive construction.

She is a  Descendant Project Researcher at University of Virginia Charlottesville.

One of her current projects is to find the descendants of the enslaved laborers who built the University of Virginia. 

His latest book is King: A Life 

This is the first major biography in decades of the civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr.—and the first to include recently declassified FBI files.  

His book re-frames the story of medieval and emerging Africa, demonstrating how the economic ascendancy of Europe, the anchoring of democracy in the West, and the fulfillment of so-called Enlightenment ideals all grew out of Europe’s dehumanizing engagement with the “dark” continent.

Some of America’s most pressing civil rights issues―desegregation, equal educational and employment opportunities, housing discrimination, and free speech―have been closely intertwined with higher education institutions. Although it is commonly known that college students and other activists, as well as politicians, actively participated in the fight for and against civil rights in the middle decades of the twentieth century, historical accounts have not adequately focused on the roles that the nation’s college presidents played in the debates concerning racism.
