Bedtime stories for curious adults, told without ads or hurry.

The Far Lantern began as a little project for our family.

We wanted something to listen to at the end of the day. Interesting stories, told gently, that could carry us somewhere else for a while without demanding that we stay awake to hear the ending.

So we started making our own.

Stories about explorers, scientists, forgotten places, extraordinary discoveries, and ordinary people living through remarkable times. Sometimes there's a curious character, an unexpected friendship, or even a little scandal. History, after all, is full of people being people.

Meticulously crafted from human imagination, curiosity, love, and attention to detail.

Our narrator, Laurence, is an AI-generated voice we've carefully shaped to create the storytelling experience we'd always hoped to hear.

Eventually, we wondered whether other people might enjoy these stories too.

So here they are.

The Far Lantern is free to listen to, with no advertisements waiting to interrupt your sleep. If you'd like to help keep the lantern burning, you're warmly invited to support Night Passage Studios on Patreon. Our supporters help cover the costs of making these stories and, from time to time, get a little say in which curious paths we explore next.

Keep the lantern burning:

https://www.patreon.com/nightpassagestudios

Otherwise, just listen. That's why we made them.

Pull up a chair. The fire is warm, the lantern is lit, and there's time for one more story.

Beyond the Familiar Roads: Isabella Bird's Journey Through Japan

In eighteen seventy-eight, Isabella Bird travelled through Japan with the young interpreter Itō, relying on the knowledge and hospitality of the people she met. From the port of Yokohama to northern roads, rivers and households, and onward to the southern places omitted from later editions of her book, this is a quiet journey through work, companionship and the limits of a visitor's understanding.

Episode 4 — A Different World Beyond the Sea

Across Hokkaidō, Isabella Bird is received by Ainu hosts whose lives extend far beyond a visitor’s notebook. The last part of her Japanese journey follows hospitality, skilled work, a personal gift, and the southern travels that lead towards departure.

Episode 2 — The Villages Beyond the Mountains

Beyond Nikkō, mountain roads lead Isabella Bird and Itō into the working life of Aizu. A missing strap, an inconvenient gathering of schoolmasters, an escaped breakfast, and a riverboat reveal a country already full of journeys of its own.

Mary Anning: The Woman Who Unearthed a Lost World

Along the fossil shores of Lyme Regis, Mary Anning learns to read a world hidden in stone. Her discoveries travel into museums and scientific arguments, while letters, friendships, and the daily business of earning a living keep the story close to the woman who found them. Four quiet episodes follow family work, extraordinary animals, and the uneven journey by which knowledge and credit find their way into history.

Episode 4 — Her Name Was Missing

Mary Anning has learned that keeping a fossil safe and making it look complete are different kinds of work. Her practical judgement meets an enthusiastic collector's ambitions, while drawings and carefully chosen specimens carry the women of Lyme into a wider conversation.

Assistance takes a useful form, a short observation reaches print, and the smaller business of finding and explaining continues. A book passed to a friend closes this last evening beside a life of patient attention.

Charlotte Murchison decides to stay a little longer at Lyme, and a collecting visit grows into a friendship carried through letters, gifts, and shared questions. Around Mary Anning and Elizabeth Philpot, the smallest specimens can become unexpectedly useful.

Drawings, letters, and an awkwardly large specimen carry the question beyond Lyme. Back at the family business, Molly has a few explanations of her own for the visitors who come looking for her daughter.

Four quiet episodes follow family work, extraordinary animals, and the uneven journey by which knowledge and credit find their way into history.

Episode 2 — Too Strange to Be Real

An animal with improbable proportions puts Mary Anning's skill before distant buyers and sceptical anatomists. She must make its strange body understandable, protect the value of her labour, and conduct a negotiation without losing either a sale or her word.

Drawings, letters, and an awkwardly large specimen carry the question beyond Lyme. Back at the family business, Molly has a few explanations of her own for the visitors who come looking for her daughter.

A quiet history of the people behind the grand department stores: founding partnerships, an employee household, and a shop assistant finding a public voice. From Paris to Brighton and London, these four stories follow work, friendship, ambition, and the places that remain after a working life has changed.

Episode 4 — What a Partnership Leaves

Marie-Louise Jaÿ already knows the work of selling when she and Ernest Cognacq begin their partnership. From a small trading space near the Pont-Neuf, their enterprise grows into La Samaritaine. We follow the practical ideas behind the store, a botanical garden in her native Samoëns, and the different kinds of care required to turn prosperity into a foundation and a public collection.

A quiet history of the people behind the grand department stores: founding partnerships, an employee household, and a shop assistant finding a public voice. From Paris to Brighton and London, these four stories follow work, friendship, ambition, and the places that remain after a working life has changed.

Episode 3 — A Voice of Her Own

Margaret Bondfield learns a trade, finds friendship beyond the shop counter, and begins asking what a fair working life should offer. In Brighton and London, questions about an evening of one’s own, employer-linked lodging and dependable rest lead her towards journalism, inquiry and organization. Different workers challenge her easy answers, while a colleague’s trust puts limits on what she can carry into public argument.

From Paris to Brighton and London, these four stories follow work, friendship, ambition, and the places that remain after a working life has changed.

Episode 1 — A Shop Becomes a World

A woman hesitates at the entrance to a Paris shop, and Marguerite Boucicaut notices. As the Bon Marché grows, a young assistant named Louise discovers that a generous welcome matters as much as a clever sale. A new colleague’s confident mistake puts their trust to the test, and the lesson follows them through letters, expanding departments, and the everyday work of making a great store human.

A quiet history of the people behind the grand department stores: founding partnerships, an employee household, and a shop assistant finding a public voice. From Paris to Brighton and London, these four stories follow work, friendship, ambition, and the places that remain after a working life has changed.
