“The hard work beats talent any day the talent doesn’t work hard”

- Noah Quiles

Noah and his wife Elia own and operate UP Art Studio out of Houston, Texas. They facilitate art projects for artists, communities, and corporations, local and globally.

Their Mission is to instill “Civic Pride through Civic Art.” Together they develop and work on projects that educate, move, and engage communities. UP Art Studio is a for-profit LLC partnership with a majority focus on community-oriented non-profit projects (donations to many of their projects are tax-deductible, via a fiscal sponsorship from Fresh Arts). They also work with private, commercial and other special projects as well. They specialize in public art projects, mural and art commissions, project management (curating, budgets, logistics), design services, marketing (design, writing, research), gallery art shows, event planning, screen printing, photography/videography, and artist collaborations.

They are passionate about public art and in 2015 they launched an initiative to transform traffic signal control cabinets into works of art, called "Mini Murals". They work closely with the City of Houston Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs, Department of Public Works & Engineering, City Council Members, and Fresh Arts who is acting as the project's fiscal agent, making donations to the project tax-deductible.

Noah is the creative force behind UP Art Studio, and has been in the “street art and mural” world for over 27 years. He brings to the team the creative ideas and strong global relationships that fuel the strategy and continuance behind the business. He is also the logistics man, managing ground crews and on-site vendors. His specific skills serve and drive daily action as well as the overall mission and vision of UP Art Studio.

<itunes:summary>David Coles joins Craig Bundren for Episode 03 of The Chromatic Podcast. David is the founder and master paint-maker at Langridge Artist Colours in Victoria, Australia - one of the world's most respected makers of artists' oil paints.
He is also the author Chromatopia, an origin story of history’s most vivid color pigments. Did you know that the Egyptians created the first synthetic color and used it to create the famous blue crown of Queen Nefertiti? Or that the noblest purple comes from a predatory sea snail? We didn't either. Be sure to check out David's book, and enjoy the show!
JOIN DAVID COLES AND CRAIG BUNDREN AS THEY DISCUSS:

01:55 What made David decide to write a book about color?

05:40 On asking: ‘Where does the color come from?'

06:50 Was Chromatopia a difficult book to write?

09:00 Mummy Brown and the names of colors.

13:00 Restoring paintings (Did we ever get to see historic art in its true beauty?)

16:20 The expense of Art and how today’s artist can obtain materials with far greater ease than historic painters.

19:18 The Guild of Saint Luke.

23:10 What is David’s favorite color, and the difference between a pigment and a dye.

27:38 Colors or Recipes? - What vapors have to do with the color of paint and the history of the creation of lead paints.

  33:30 Synthetics.

40:34 David talks about the recipes in his book.

42:00 Once an artist, always an artist (even during COVID-19)

  43:52: Setting up the company.

50:20 Mad Scientist or Chef - Making paint that lasts longer, revolutionizing the industry for better, longer lasting art.

      53:00 Book Talk.
