It's tough out there, and it's interesting to hear how much has changed just in one week. But we're gonna keep making podcasts until you beg us to stop making them, or unless something else happens. This week:

A Very Special Valentine's Day Special?

Two apologies, straightaway: First of all, we apparently had some internet issues that affected the recording in a few spots. The book that Evan is reading is called "Effortless Mastery", for example. Sorry 'bout that, sometimes it happens. And secondly: we apologize for the amount of time we spend performing "Swedish Chef Beatbox Dubstep" in this episode, it's a lot.

On second thought—never mind. Sorry not sorry.

Matt and Evan don't really celebrate Valentine's Day, but since it's actually February (pronounced "Feb Roo Ary"…true fact!) 14th as we record this, we decide it's a good idea to offer very unqualified advice to the general populace. Matt even built a form to collect questions. NERD!

the sun hasn't shone on the BivBros in a long damn while. Vitamin D, people. It's important.
Evan has been obsessed with Critical Role, an online D&D Twitch/YouTube/podcast channel, as he's trying to put together a game in Atlanta.
Matt is headed to the Southeastern Theater Conference, and is ready for CaptionPoint's "coming out party". There will be very little cosplay involved, but you never know.
Sam Donaldson, reporter. And cowboy?
Matt is watching the Stephen King TV adaptation of his novel The Outsider, and is really into it, so far. Will it end well, unlike many of Stephen's books?
He's also really excited for the new season of Fargo to start.
Evan has been experiencing "freelancer panic". In order to combat that, he watched the entire MCU and has a three top best and worst movies of the series for you.
He also loved the touring production of "The Band's Visit", currently in Atlanta. One of the coolest musicals he's seen in a long time.
Evan sometimes has to restrain himself from shouting inappropriate things during ridiculous theater performances.

Some Motherf%^&ers Are Always Trying to Ice-Skate Uphill

Alison, an extrovert, was surprised at how little "hang time" there was , as the rest of the band has learned that conserving energy is the way that they survive. Generally, she had a great time, but was surprised about how full days ended up being. That being said, she felt like she hit her stride towards the end of it and walked away really enjoying being on a tour bus for a solid month. Rock and roll is surprisingly difficult.
Evan learned over the past few years that putting his energy into the right place is key…the band has never been into "uppers and downers and booze and hospitals", or "the Motley Crue Model".
Matt wasn't surprised, but he is always surprised: even when exhausted, playing music for human beings is an energizing thing. Being a part of a community like Jump's is an energizing thing.
Matt pronounces the word "horror" as "harrer". True fact, and a very strange one.
Talk of what happens on tour turns to talk about Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a seven-season 90s TV show that is many people's entrance into the Whedonverse.
Vampires are coming back, right? A new Dracula TV show, Marvel's Blade and Morbius, etc. We do our best to ignore the whole Twilight concept. Sorry.
Blade produced one of Evan's favorite daily phrases: "Always some motherf$*#er trying to ice-skate uphill". Morbius features one of of Evan's more hated actors: Jared Leto.
Does anyone (besides Evan) remember a Canadian vampire cop show called "Forever Night"? No one else did. No one does.
We probably need to do a full podcast on Joss Whedon. That's probably a thing we should do.
Zombies? Probably also for another show, but treat yourself and watch Anna and the Apocalypse.

The Junk Was Majestic: a BivBros Year in Review

Rastafarians are currently Evan's "song topic of choice". There will be a new star-studded Dune movie. Was the band Good Charlotte named after actor Charlotte Rampling?
It's a new decade! We can finally say "the 20s" instead of something far less satisfying! Like, "the Nasty 70s"
To start the new year, The Brothers are all about allowing themselves some personal time, specifically through meditation. Is it really as cool as everyone else says that it is?
They both read the book "Miracle Mornings: the Not-So-Obvious Secret Guaranteed to Transform Your Life: Before 8AM" by Hal Elrod.
Evan has been doing some re-perusing of the classic book "Effortless Mastery" by Kenny Werner after feeling great about his playing during the White Buffalo Tour 2019.
Matt is very grateful to the people that have listened to this strange little meandering podcast. And is proud that we've made it to eight episodes. We are not the only podcast of its kind; we're one of thousands. We're not even the first show that features brothers that use a podcast to stay in touch. But we do it to make us happy. So thank you, so much, for listening.
Top Things of 2019:
- The Mandalorian. It's on most people's lists, of course, and also: Baby Yoda. He's a true star.
- Doom Patrol was great. DC Cinematic/TV Universe overall: not great.
- Watchmen. "The junk was majestic". The nicest surprise of the year, the best written show, a loving reimagining of a classic world.
- Joker. Matt loved it. Not for the "Batman-ness" of it, but as a standalone movie. Controversial, sure, but also just fascinating and beautiful at times.
- Red Dead Redemption 2 was a big part of Matt's life this year. Again, beautiful storytelling and acting. If you play online, and run into MATTIEMACNAB, please don't murder him, OK?
Neil Peart has passed, and whether or not you listened to Rush, you can kind of appreciate that the dude was a prodigy. Prodigies are cool.
Discord. It's so old-school. Could we start it up again? Talk about things, and communitize a little bit? Let's hang out.

Old TV-movies about Dungeons and Dragons, the new Game of Thrones prequel(s), shows about bounty hunters in space. The Brothers go to Confessional Corner and have a little real talk about their dad, who most definitely suffered from the effects of toxic masculinity. And ending on a happy note—the happy discovery of the band (and person) Matteil!

Does anyone remember the 80s made-for-TV movie Mazes and Monsters, starring a 28-year old Tom Hanks? We do, but we don't know why Evan brings it up.
Who was Rona Jaffe? Matt obviously doesn't know.
They didn't do anything Halloween related this year. BORING.
There is some news on the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel. After the finale, does anyone care? Should we??
Evan is excited about the upcoming Mandalorian show on Disney.
Matt is watching the entirety of Seinfeld, from start to finish, because he missed every show from the 90s.
Matt would watch anything involving Kristen Bell, except Heroes. Man, Heroes was terrible.

In the new segment called "Are you Local?", the guys talk about new findings in their separate cities, Atlanta and Chicago.
Matt saw Henry Rollins and Jared Yates Sexton talk about toxic masculinity at a Chicago Humanities Festival event. We discover that Matt & Evan's dad crushed Matt's dreams of being a fashion designer.

Is Shakespeare's MacBeth a CreepyPasta?

This week, we got some rock concerts, some theater, and of course some timely horror movies to discuss:

BivBros are not actually bi-lengual but Evan does like the app Duolingo (not a sponsor—yet?).
Sleepaway Camp: a horror classic that is less popular than, say, A Nightmare on Elm Street, but just as dark, interesting, and horrible.
Horror movies the boys have watched recently: Evan saw Uncanny Annie and Just F#$king with You, but couldn't get past the first few minutes of the Autopsy of Jane Doe. Matt sort of liked Spring and one of Bradley Cooper's first movies, I See You.
Matt saw the first half of the new HBO series Watchmen. Really liked it, but we'll get into that another day. Regardless, they get their requisite minutes talking about comic books by recapping the concept of the original graphic novel the show is (loosely?) based on.
Evan thinks that they could include more "local flavor" on the podcast: sharing adventures and experiences that happen in their respective cities (Atlanta and Chicago). Matt got to see friends Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent of Shovels and Rope and gushes about them. We've been friends and fans of those two for almost 20 years and it just does our heart proud to see what they have accomplished. Their new album By Blood is fantastic and they pull it off gloriously live.
Evan supported his theater-producing neighbors in a great production of Mac | Beth, at the Atlanta Synchronicity Theatre (https://www.synchrotheatre.com/). It sounds amazing—what if MacBeth was a creepypasta story?

The Time is Ripe for Michael Stipe

What is a nerd? and what are you nerdy about? Matt is surprised how many friends have confessed to listening to this podcast, something he considers very specifically nerdy. So we shake it up a little bit this week—a lot less super-hero talk, but the same amount of Nerd.

Our Winston-Salem backyard was covered in kudzu—it's a real thing—and also the cover of R.E.M.'s first album, Murmur (recorded in Winston-Salem).
Alison is finally getting into Downton Abbey. She's obsessed. The BivBros didn't really get into it then or now, but Matt thinks this might have something to do with his upbringing.
She has also started The Politician, the new Netflix series starring Ben Platt. She isn't completely sold, yet, but is hanging in there so far. Matt is interested in the show, too, because a fellow Chicago actor is also in it.
Matt is excited that the Supreme Court has once again thrown out Domino's fight to keep their website inaccessible to those that are blind or with low vision. The fact that Dominos appealed is disgusting, the fact that they now have spent millions of dollars on a law case instead of paying someone $30k to fix their site is abhorrent. But they lost! So there!
Matt enjoyed the new horror films Uncanny Annie (Hulu) and In the Tall Grass (Netflix)
Evan watched the final season of The Americans, and a documentary called The Game Changers, about superstar plant-based athletes that are super-ripped and cut. Turns out Arnold Schwarzenegger is a vegan, now!

And finally, the Brothers speak about their deep and undying love of the Southern-based rock and roll band R.E.M. How they influenced them, helped to define them as musicians, paved the way for all Southern bands. Michael Stipe has a new song, his first solo outing, and we listen to it and give our thoughts.

The Skeksis are Still Scary as F$%k

Matt is getting to caption the 90s Chicago-set horror movie Candyman, live, which is really exciting. We talk about Cabrini Green in Chicago and how it was the perfect setting for conjuring a scary dude with a hook hand and bees for guts.

Lots of little comic movie news bits, and the Bivins Brothers are unimpressed by nearly all of it:

Spider-Man is back in the MCU for two more movies, at least, and while we're excited for this, the whole drama has a manipulative "New Coke/CocaCola Classic" vibe to it.
Evan is worried that Matt is going to be in a movie theater when the super creepy Incels turn the upcoming movie Joker into a manifesto for the cause of all sad, loney, unlovable white dudes. Matt only goes to matinees, though, so it's fine.
The first official Birds of Prey: and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn is out. The BivBros take: why are they shoe-horning Harley Quinn into a Birds of Prey movie? Why not give Harley her own movie, if she's that popular?
And they've stopped watching Titans. Will Matt keep his DC Universe subscription? It's looking less and less likely.

Watching the Dark Crystal opened up a Pandora's box of fear for Evan, but the brothers are especially glad that there is a decided lack of CGI. Evan is an infrequent but ugly crier, and watching Jim Henson's funeral is a trigger.

Next time we'll try to be more positive and encouraging about things! Blame it on Matt's impending cold.

Kristen Bell: America's True Sweetheart?

Evan had a stomach flu this week, which allowed him to take a break from eating his usual enormous amounts of science food, and might cut meat out again for a while…it's a new new beginning. Ever efficient, he spent the forced couch time watching the first season of Veronica Mars, loved it, and is both interested and terrified at the possible Buffy/Veronica fan fic out there on the internet. It is decided that Kristen Bell is America's True Sweetheart.

Kristen Stewart, however great in her own way, is not. Rob Thomas, the creator of Veronica Mars, is also not the lead singer of Matchbox 20, though we wish he was.

Matt made it through Netflix's french horror series Marianne, found it very uneven but with moments of true terror.

Turns out that Matt and Evan have a very un-useful psychic ability to innately sense all of Michael Landon's children.

Titans Episode 2 is better…but we're still not convinced yet. To make up for it, Evan suggests a number of DC Comics to start with, if you're kind of wondering where to start. Definitely go by the writer.

Matt is going to hear George R. R. Martin speak in Chicago soon. He really thinks that George R. R. Martin's writing is "clear as a bell". He mentions it three times. His writing really is clear as a bell, though.

Does anyone remember Shobiz Pizza? Was that just a Southern thing? The Brothers imagine a haunted house that is set in a decrepit old pizza joint that features animatronic creatures. Like "Five Nights at Freddie's" but IRL.

We're moving our nerdiest chitter-chatter to podcast form! First of all, because it's easier to edit. Secondly, because we have had such terrible internet issues that long-form video drove us nuts. Finally, Evan is finally allowed to skip showering before we talk about Spider-Man.

This being said, our first foray into podcasting features absolutely awful sound quality from Matt's mic, and some audio skips from Evan in the first fifteen minutes. Many apologies, and we'll work it out next time.
