Fertilizer quotes from Piper, Oakley, and Arthur, and #MLSN

Piper and Oakley wrote that "there is nothing mysteriously beneficial in their formulas" and that mixed fertilizers are "extensively advertised" but "are not to be recommended." Arthur wrote that soil testing is a "commercial gimmick" and that fine turf with clippings collected needs only "a little nitrogen in spring, no phosphates, and very little potash." I recommend an article I wrote that attempts to explain this in the context of #MLSN.

Calculation of the average daily temperature

A common way to calculate average daily temperature is to take the sum of the daily maximum and daily minimum temperatures, and to divide by two. A better statistical approximation of the average temperature is to take measurements made every hour and then to find the mean value of those continuous measurements.

Constants in the turfgrass growth potential equation

The PACE Turf growth potential equation has one variable (the actual air temperature) and two constants. The constants are optimum air temperature and a term for variance that controls the shape of the curve as the actual temperature moves away from the optimum temperature. It's a little more complicated than that, because the constants change depending on whether you are making the calculation for cool-season grass, warm-season grass, and on whether you are using the Fahrenheit temperature scale or the Celsius temperature scale.

Two easy methods to estimate N mineralization under turfgrass

You can expect soil organic matter to be 5% nitrogen, and you can expect from 1 to 4% of that organic nitrogen to mineralize in one year. You can also calculate estimated daily mineralization and sum it to get weekly, monthly, and annual totals.

Checking phosphorus gradients on putting greens with an upper and lower rootzone sample

Soil P, pH, and salinity are a few things that likely vary by depth in your rootzone. I've started recommending that 20% of putting greens tested be done with a sample divided at the 5 cm depth. Send the lab a 0-5 cm and 5-10 cm depth sample from that green, rather than the standard 0-10 cm depth sample.

In this episode, I discuss sixteen year old bentgrass greens that have also gone sixteen years without P fertilizer. The greens are also free of Poa annua. Then I discuss how fertilizer recommendations made from soil tests are a lot more precise if the time duration over which the fertilizer is being recommended is considered explicitly. And I explain why, when measuring #ClipVol, you will get value from annual totals too.

The combination of light (DLI) and temperature (GP)

The growth potential converts air temperature to a 0 to 1 (or 0 to 100%) scale. Of course, there are a lot more things that affect actual growth, including light, nitrogen, and water. I discuss these and why I'm not so convinced that adding a light factor to GP makes it more useful.

Annual sand topdressing quantities, zoysia seeds, and a measuring laser

Zoysiagrass can seed year round when the conditions are right. In this episode, I discuss what those conditions are, share some tools for getting a site-specific sand topdressing estimate, describe the reshuffling of top posts on the ATC website, and discuss using a line laser to measure the effective height of cut.

Does a location exist with 365 days a year of high GP for cool-season grass?

The temperature-based growth potential, developed by PACE Turf, transforms the average air temperature to a growth potential (GP). The GP is conveniently scaled from 0 to 1 (or from 0 to 100%, if you prefer), and high GP values indicate that the air temperature is close to an optimum for grass growth. This episodes looks at a very interesting question: are there places on earth with a high GP for cool-season grass, all the year round?

"Blown away by the quality" of turfgrass by a simple method of adjusting N fertilizer

An anonymous golf course superintendent wrote that they were "blown away by the quality of these surfaces with an amount of nitrogen I would’ve thought was far too small." I discuss this, and some of the changes I'm made in my thinking about what is "far too small," or not. Also, I discuss some of the preventative fungicide and herbicide applications on golf courses in Japan that keep the zoysia surfaces looking so clean in winter.

A soil water content turf hack

I prefer sand topdressing amounts expressed as a depth

I gave three reasons for my preference that sand topdressing amounts be expressed as a depth. One is consistency and standardization. The shade effect of clouds, photosynthetically active radiation, and 2 PAR apps

Clouds reduce photosynthetically active radiation by about 25% when you can still see your shadow. When you can't see your shadow, that's about 50% of PAR blocked. And when you can't see your shadow and can't find what part of the sky the sun is in, that's about 75% PAR reduction.

Terminology of turfgrass soils: total organic material (#OM246) and soil organic matter (SOM) with Brian Whitlark

Brian Whitlark is the West region director of the USGA Green Section. We talked about total organic material testing of turfgrass soils. This is distinct from soil organic matter testing. Soil organic matter is measured on material that has already passed a 2 mm sieve and thus is no larger than a grain of sand. This sieving removes much of the thatch and mat and living plant material from the sample.

Potassium fertilizer could increase dandelions by 20x

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) abundance can be increased by potassium (K) and lime applications. Adding K fertilizer when it is not needed by the grass, or adding lime to increase the pH when the grass does not require such an adjustment, could lead to increased competitiveness of dandelions in that sward.

Using the standard growth potential (GP) equation allows direct comparisons from site to site

I used to tell people that GP is just a number, and if they wanted to modify it to fit the way grass grows at their location, then go ahead and do so. I don't say that anymore. Instead, I recommend using the standard equation. Why? To facilitate direct comparisons between sites, knowing that everyone has used the same equation.

All about the growth ratio equation for temperature-adjusted #ClipVol

Growth ratio to predict clipping volume for any time of year

Both lawns are manilagrass (Zoysia matrella) in southern Thailand. One is beside the road on one of my regular running routes, and another is on an island. Neither are mown. Both receive traffic in some areas and not in others. There is a remarkable difference in turfgrass appearance and quality as a lawn or sporting surface, based only on the amount of traffic received.

Grass uses nutrients, so we can expect the soil nutrient level to be lower tomorrow than it is today. By making a prediction of the decline in soil nutrient levels for a specific time duration, one can come up with a fertilizer recommendation that ensures the grass will be supplied with all the nutrients it can use.

What the ATC Doublecut is all about

Hi. I'm Micah Woods, chief scientist at the Asian Turfgrass Center. I've been studying turfgrass around the world since the 1990s, and I've been writing about turfgrass on my blog in three decades now. That's more than a thousand posts about all kinds of turfgrass topics --- playing conditions, fertilizer, soil tests, grass selection, sustainability, frost delays, growth rate --- pretty much everything that I've been interested in.

In this ATC Doublecut series, I'm discussing some of these same topics. Mostly it's the new blog posts, the most recently published ones, but I may take a second look at some of the classic, perennially popular topics. And that's what this Doublecut is --- another look at a topic, with some supplemental information, perhaps some background stories about the topic that I didn't include in the blog post, a justification for why I thought the topic was important enough to write about, and important enough for you to read.

These are going to be in the form of videos, so I can show some photos or charts if I think they are relevant, and I'm also releasing this series as a podcast, because I try to describe what I am seeing, so I think this can work as pure audio too. If you think the topic is interesting enough to learn more about, and I hope you will, then you can check out the details at asianturfgrass.com. I put the link to each post getting the Doublecut treatment in the show notes.

My idea with this series is to discuss each topic in a casual way, without too many numbers. To hit the key points, as if I were talking with a friend, explaining why I wrote the blog post, and what I am excited about with that particular topic, and what I hope a broader knowledge of that topic might accomplish. If you are a regular reader of the ATC website, then I expect this will be interesting for you because it provides more information about the topics I've written about.
