Ephesians 5:18-6:20

Theme for August 2024: Together! 

EPHESIANS: This letter was written by Paul from prison in Rome to the church in Ephesus and was intended to be a circular letter for all of the churches in the region. It offers a panoramic view of God’s plan to “bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ” (1:10). The letter is filled with praise for the Messiah and revelation (mystery) about God’s miraculous work through Him. Thus, Ephesians is known for its High Christology. 

Ephesians is also marked by its High Ecclesiology. Paul points his readers to the truths about the identity and realities of the Church that God intended. This new creation (the Church) is the new Temple where heaven and earth converge and the new humanity, comprised of both Jews and Gentiles reside. God is now present in this new creation and on display through this new humanity. He will display His wisdom to the heavenly powers and blanket the earth with His glory and knowledge through the Church (Ephesians 2-3). 

The Church is uniquely equipped for this grand task to live circumspect lives amidst their neighbors as testimonies to what God is doing. He will equip the Church through the presence and power of His Spirit to fulfill this role to His glory (Ephesians 5-6). 

Satan will not take all of this lying down! He will oppose the work of God on every hand. Consequently, we must be clothed with power from on High to live as the Messiah’s people in every arena of our lives! 

Remarkably, the union of heaven and earth, the miracle of the new humanity is to actually be on display in our homes! We are to reflect the glory of God in and through our marriages. God created the institution of marriage (Genesis 1-2). He uses the imagery of marriage to convey His relationship with Israel in the Old Testament. Every Christian marriage is intended to be a reflection of the relationship that Christ has with His Church. “Tinker with it at your own peril” (N.T. Wright). 

Christians are to be marked by mutual submission as one sign of being filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18-21). 

A Christian home is characterized by an appropriate level of order and clarity. Marriage is a heaven/earth partnership between a man and a woman, each participating in the partnership willingly and lovingly as unto Christ. Men and women are different, uniquely designed by God (Genesis 1:26-28) and both created in His image. Marriage is not just a partnership intended for mutual fulfillment (though this does happen), it is intended to be a reflection of the mystery of the union of Christ and His Church! Non-Christians should gaze at Christian marriages with wonder, curiosity, and amazement!

The central idea is that a Christian's daily starting point should be righteousness. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing God as a loving Father who is always present, desires to communicate, guide, and empower His children. The text highlights two perspectives on the Christian experience: a continual cycle and a significant moment in time. To nurture this relationship, it suggests maintaining a daily time with God, engaging in weekly worship, setting aside monthly unhurried time, and participating in consistent community.

Mary seized a moment in John 12:1-11 and gave something precious to Jesus. She broke open the alabaster vial and poured the sweet perfume on his feet. This act of grace and generosity filled the house with a beautiful aroma. Generosity does that. It is beautiful and contagious. As we reflect on all that Jesus does for us, sometimes we need to pause and ask --- What can I give to Him? What might you offer to Jesus today?

"Nicodemus had some questions. He was looking for answers. Finally, “at night” he came to Jesus to get some insight. Jesus gave him more than he could have ever imagined! Jesus offered insight to Nicodemus that has enlightened billions of people since that fateful conversation! What do you need to know from Jesus? What is troubling you? What is your ---- “How can this be? ----- issue? Do what Nicodemus did. Come to Jesus. Even if you need to come “at night” as well."

Dr. Wiles preached on "Wedding Planning." Weddings are great celebrations in most every culture. However, they can be very stressful. So much planning goes into these special events. Sometimes things go awry! However, it turns out, marriages are much more than weddings! The family in this story faced a desperate moment in their wedding. Many couples can identify with this experience. Even more couples can identify with desperate moments in their marriages. We will watch and see how Jesus responds to this couples’ needs ---- and then reflect on how Jesus can respond to the moments of desperation in our marriages.

Human beings demonstrate a universal desire for and capacity for spiritual life. There is just something spiritual about all human beings. This reality points to the truth that we have all been created in the Image of God. All human beings have a soul. We find life for our soul through a deep relationship with God through His Son, Jesus.

What defines you?

“Before the Passover Festival, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.” – John 13:1

Love is wanting God’s best for someone and taking action to see it happen.

“Little Children, let us not love in word or speech, but in action and truth” – 1 John 3:18

To Love with truth is to love directed by truth

We cannot passively love

“I give you a new command, love one another. Just as I have loved you, you are to love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” – John 13:34-35

“For God so loved the world in this way, He gave His one and only son, so that everyone who believes in him would not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16

Universal Belief in Justice

Justice is an extension of God’s love for His creation.

Jesus ushers in the Kingdom of God; God’s re-creative work in the midst of a fallen creation!

As followers of Jesus, we are “Justice-Bringers” on His behalf!

Jesus has come to put things right!

Sermon Overview: God’s crowning achievement is humanity! He has placed His image in every human being. He has designed human beings to uniquely bear His image and reflect His glory in His world. Human beings matter because God designed us for a unique relationship with Him. His desire is for us to flourish!

God created everything!

God created humanity!

Man is now the pivot of the story, as in chapter 1 he was the climax. Everything is told in terms of him: even the primeval waste is shown awaiting him (2:5b), and the narrative works outwards from man himself to man’s environment (garden, trees, river, beasts and birds) in logical as against chronological order, to reveal the world as we are meant to see it: a place expressly prepared for our delight and discipline. It is misleading to call this a second creation account, for it hastens to localize the scene, passing straight from the world at large to ‘a garden . . . in the east’; all that follows is played out on this narrow stage.

The Bible portrays creation as divine activity that results in the appearance of and the ordering of the heavens and earth.

Creation flows out of who God is. It is a natural expression of his attributes . . . God’s attributes intrinsically lead to his creative work just as they lead to his salvific work. God needs no motivation to create; it simply flows from who he is. He does not need to create; he is the Creator. When we honor and serve him, it is in recognition of those attributes.

Creation is an act of divine Revelation. God’s self-revelation through creation fills the created universe with purpose.

“Apologetics” comes from the Greek word, apologia, which means “defense.” Doing apologetics is speaking in defense of the faith, or providing reasons for belief. It involves untangling the many misconceptions that people lug around due to their upbringing or the various cultural sound bites they’ve consciously absorbed into their religious point of view. Apologetics serves to clear away the intellectual rubble strewn about by our cultural moment and the entrenched assumptions of our day, providing the message of Jesus with a fairer hearing in the marketplace of ideas.

The Gospel of John

John’s gospel is unique not only in Christian literature, but in all writings everywhere. How should we best approach it? Think of it for a moment in terms of food. John’s gospel contains all the ingredients you need for a full, first-class meal. Those who have the time (and most of us do, if we really want to) should regularly treat themselves to a sit-down, full-on, five-courses-and-wine reading of it, right through. It should take roughly a couple of hours. Take that time to savor it, to sense both its overall flow and its sudden extra flavors, its splendid nutrition and extra delights. There will always be more: more depth, more subtlety, more hints of promise . . . Equally, in between long and leisured readings, John is also—if I can put it like this—a great book to snack on . . . John’s gospel will reward that approach too, even while reminding you of the full meal that’s waiting for you when next you have the time and opportunity.

The heart of the Christmas Story is the provision of salvation for the people of God. In fact, the offer of salvation extends beyond the border of Israel and has been extended to all of humanity! As we prepare for 2023 (a year given to evangelistic sensitivity), we will explore the miraculous nature of God’s saving grace on this Fourth Sunday of Advent.

The Hebrew word, zakar – “to remember” is used over 200 times in the Hebrew Old Testament. It can have the idea of appropriate actions included with the act of remembering.

The Gospel is the Metanarrative!

BENEDICTUS – Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel!

God remembers!

SALVATION: God has offered forgiveness of sins, light to shine in the darkness, and peace through His Son, Jesus!

God’s promise of redemption culminates in the miracle of the Incarnation! The focus of this story is Jesus!

1 Corinthians 15 is a true masterpiece! Paul shared his most extensive defense of the resurrection of Jesus and the future resurrection of the People of God. God is at work in His world, and He is guiding history toward His desired end. The culmination of all things remains on the horizon. But the day is coming when God’s victorious note will be sounded for all of creation to hear. Our victory in Jesus is secure!
