Dave is an assistant professor in the Hank Greenspun School of Journalism and Media Studies. He holds a B.S. in Criminology and an M.Ed. in Counseling from North Carolina State University. He received his doctorate in Educational Technology from UNLV where he focused on how technology can be utilized to help at-risk students graduate from high school. Nourse teaches courses in audio gathering and production, audio storytelling and podcasting, and media innovation. He also serves as an advisor for UNLV's student radio station, KUNV 91.5 The Rebel HD-2, where he works with students keen on developing live sports announcing and broadcast skills. Nourse is a National Board Certified Counselor (NCC) and a State licensed school counselor. His research interests include the impact of community-based and Lower Power FM radio stations on their city of license, visual and data journalism, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). In his downtime, Nourse is an avid radio and podcast listener, runner, singer, grill master and lacrosse enthusiast.

Matt currently mixes at Stoney’s Rockin’ Country, Stoney’s North Forty, and Vic’s Jazz Club Las Vegas.

Friend of the Show - Samuel "Sam" Friend

Sam holds both a Bachelor of Arts in Music with a Minor in Music Technology at UNLV, and a Bachelor of Science in Communications at Dixie State University. His multifaceted background has lead him to a number of roles in the music industry such as composing music for Cirque du Soleil, touring as a Front of House sound engineer, and working at the renowned Studio at the Palms. With drums and percussion being his primary focus during his schooling, Samuel studied classical percussion under Dean Gronemeier and Tim Jones and was awarded the “Outstanding Percussionist” Award in Fall 2016. Operating as a sound engineer in both the studio and concert environments, Samuel has worked on many different productions with artists such as H.E.R, Lil Wayne, Megan the Stallion, Celine Dion, ASIA, Lou Gramm, Steve Augeri, Bill Champlain, and many others. In addition to his experience with musical acts, Samuel has also worked on a variety of commercial and media projects with work featured on the Super Bowl, and commercials for McDonalds, MGM, and Formula 1.

Today we are talking with Carlaya Koslow, also known as the Queen of Flow, is the radio personality for KUNV-FM's 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. morning radio show. She studied communications and dance at UCLA and began her career at Los Angeles' Kaleidoscope Radio Magazine where she produced the new talent showcase radio show. An undeniably natural talent scout, she always has been ready, willing, and able to identify talent and showcase potential hitmakers. She has trained dozens of interns who have gone on to have successful careers in radio and entertainment. She was born and raised in Compton, California and is a child of the turbulent sixties and seventies. The energetic artist relocated to Las Vegas in the eighties and began a radio career spanning over 30 years. She is a winner of the 2012 Las Vegas Review Journal's Best Radio Personality Award and a member of the Nevada Broadcasters Hall of Fame.

Audio Narrator and Professional Dueling Musician - Matt Newbold

Matt Newbold got his start when he moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 1997 where he immediately found his niche as a keyboard player for several country bands and eventually the front man for his own band. In between traveling he found himself in several piano bars in Nashville. He traveled Europe, the Netherlands, England, and the Middle East with a band performing for the soldiers stationed in these countries. Matt went to work for Disney Cruise Lines as a keyboard player and switched to dueling pianos. He has since worked for Holland America Cruise Lines, Royal Carribean Cruise Lines, performed at Dueling Piano clubs across the nation. He has played at almost every dueling piano bar in Las Vegas; New York New York, Harrah’s Casino, The Paris, Pete’s Dueling Piano Bar and also solo piano bars such as the Extra Lounge in Planet Hollywood, Hank’s Steakhouse, Red Rock Casino, the Encore, and the Aria Hotel. He has performed for Private weddings including Steve Wynn’s extravagant wedding in 2011 as well as Corporate Events.

Anthony is an Audio Engineer at Fremont Street Experience with 8 years of experience in the entertainment technology industry. Specializing in RF coordination, Anthony uses that experience to ensure wireless stability for live musicians in high pressure environments. By focusing on the details, Anthony has been able to put his B.S. in Entertainment Technology and Design he earned at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas to good use. Anthony spends his days mixing and providing audio expertise to bands in downtown Las Vegas. It’s the co-operative nature and free spirit of live music that motivates him daily. When he’s not at the workplace, Anthony is a pianist and artist who loves spending time making music with his family.

After years of learning how to make music, He debuted as a hip-hop artist after moving to Chicago, Illinois and worked with many different artists and was introduced to the industry recording with a multi-platinum record engineer. After moving to Las Vegas, Nevada, Noah became engulfed with the local music scene, continued making music, worked with a production company making content for local artists/shows/venues/etc, and began pursuing a career as an audio engineer alongside his other pursuits. Today Noah is still making music and engineering.

Ray Fletcher, also known around the halls of KUNV as Rebel Ray, is a UNLV alum who completed his bachelor’s degree in journalism and media studies in the fall of 2022. After completing his associates degree in 2003, Ray worked in the IT field for 5 years before transitioning to sales, where he would spend several years selling different types of products for different companies. That led Ray to create his own online retail business that he ran for 5 years. Ray is currently the campus engagement producer for KUNV and works part-time for the Las Vegas Raiders as a production assistant of audio programming.

RT is a long time resident of Las Vegas, having grown up here and completed all levels of his education in the valley. He graduated from UNLV in 2013 with a BA in Broadcast Journalism and quickly began working in local news as a video editor. Looking for something of a change, Ryan left that position in early 2017 to pursue other endeavors. After a brief time off, Ryan began working at UNLV-TV. Ryan now teaches classes in the school of journalism and is a mentor to nearly all students pursuing media production and broadcasting at UNLV. He also works professionally as a director for a local news affiliate.

Thank you for joining me for another episode of Talking with the Pros. Today we are talking with Josh Coutts, “JC” hosts ROCK Avenue on KUNV. He has been in the radio industry for almost 20 years. From 2004-11, he was on local 107.9 when it was an alternative station. Alongside Local Show Joe, they had the number one Sunday show and local music show for nearly seven years straight. At the same time, he started an internet radio show called Viva Ska Radio, which has granted him the nickname Jr Ska Boss. JC has also been a booking agent and been on tours around the United States, including Warped Tour. He has had the opportunity to sing with BB King, Neil Young, and Bradley Nowell of Sublime.

Right now, JC’s home and mainstay is ROCK Avenue, which plays ska, punk, rockabilly, rock n’ roll, metal, classic rock, pop, alternative, indie, emo, local bands, and more. You can rock out with JC from 8 p.m to 12 a.m. on Sunday nights.
