TONILLE’S BIO:

Tonille Simone Watkis is an actress, drama teacher and the reigning Miss Planet Jamaica. She’s no stranger to pageantry and is also a former Miss Supranational Jamaica & Miss Black USA. She originally hails from Connecticut but, has always known Clarendon to be her second home. Tonille graduated with a BFA in Acting from Adelphi University in New York and a diploma in Classical Acting from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art in England.

Since then, Tonille has been working as an actress and drama teacher in CT and touring the U.S. for over five years with her platform Learn for Life, an initiative designed to celebrate diversity & encourage unity across the globe by highlighting social justice issues through the arts & educational programming. Under the platform, she performs her autobiographical one-woman play entitled, “No Boxes Allowed,” about her quest through life to celebrate her cultural duality, debunk the myths and stereotypes surrounding black womanhood and navigate her way through the dating scene shedding light on the moments when consent isn’t just “black or white.”

THE ANATOMY OF A DREAM

This episode was initially inspired by the legacy of Kobe Bryant and his 2017 Animation short, ‘Dear Basketball’. I saw it for the first time after the passing of Kobe and it was truly engaging, realistic, inspiring and honest. Without spoiling it, it describes a young boy who falls in love with basketball and does everything in his power to make it his reality. It made me think a lot about my life and journey falling in love with music and wanting to make it my reality.

In the January 2017 article by John C. Maxwell in Success Magazine, he gives a definition of a dream that I like. He said, “A dream is an inspiring picture of the future that energizes your mind, will and emotions, empowering you to do everything you can to achieve it. A dream worth pursuing is a picture and blueprint of a person's purpose and potential.”

There are so many important words in that definition such as INSPIRING, FUTURE, ENERGIZES, EMPOWERING YOU TO DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN TO ACHIEVE IT, BLUEPRINT OF A PERSON’S PURPOSE AND POTENTIAL.

So today I wanted to talk a little bit about that blueprint, the features, parts or the anatomy of a dream. Some of these features include:

The dream has to be YOURS - The genesis of YOUR dream can only come from within you. Caroline Myss (pronounced Mace) said: “People suffer when they pursue a life or chase a dream that doesn't belong to them.” This powerful quote made me think of the many people that are suffering because they chased a dream that belonged to other people such as their parents or partner or some other person of influence who led to them to believe a particular path was right for them, and derail them from a path that they should have chosen.
A dream must make you uncomfortable ...if even only slighty - Though I ultimately feel the fulfilment of your dreams will make you one of the happiest persons ever, nothing that you want that bad rarely ever comes easy. I remember my first days in music college in the United States sitting in the cafeteria alone, seeing many people that looked and sounded different from me, having conversations that I couldn’t relate to, thinking ‘What in the world have I done’. Sleeping on an uncomfortable single dorm room bed at 27 years of age, enduring brutal winters and sharing a communal shower. Barely the worst deal in life, but it made me come to the realisation that love has to be the root of choosing many discomforts in pursuit of one passion. The journey absolutely took me through many unregrettable discomforts to get to where I am now, and I’d do it all again in a heartbeat.
A dream can mature, change or evolve - I remembered when I had my first dream to be an international recording artiste, it was linear and rigid, black and white, but as I matured I failed to realise that I would want different things in life and that these things would influence said dreams that I had been so unwavering about. I’d soon recognise that life is fluid, and so it the dream. So I had to be willing to allow universal flow to open new doors that would take me to places I had never imagined, and that my initial dream would never have gotten me.
A Dream must be nurtured - In order for a dream to affect your future purpose and potential, then it must be fed to grow. Fed a diet of courage, support, research and love, and if you don’t get this nourishment from others, then you will have to find it within yourself.
A dream must be connected to a purpose - This is probably one of the most important lessons I had to learn when I realised that my dream to perform couldn’t be self-serving. If we really a talk truth, I think most singers decide to perform, to see their name in bright lights and to hold a shiny award, but the picture is so much bigger. Charity, mentorship, influence, inspiration are just a few of the purposeful offshoots of the dream, instead of fame, celebrity status or just mere consumption with self. I call is career masturbation, but narcissism aside, hopefully, your dream will help others.

These, in my opinion, are some of the main features of a dream, but I couldn’t share these without also sharing a few important things I don’t wish for you to let happen to your dreams:

Don’t allow another to prevent your dream from happening whether through discouragement, jealousy, ignorance or lack of support.
Don’t sleep on, or overthink your dream to its death - Don’t let analysis paralysis be your best friend. Instead, just start. It doesn’t have to be perfect, and thankfully life gives you the opportunity to tweak it and make it better.
Don’t diminish your dream - Keep your dream big. ...

BIOGRAPHY:

Mezan Ayoka is a writer and filmmaker with 12 years of experience that spans advertising, copywriting, and producing and directing TV and film projects for traditional and non- traditional media. She attended the Los Angeles Film School in 2008. On returning to Jamaica, Mezan co-directed the short film Grow Jamaica Grow that placed second in the RBC Make a film in 24 Hours Competition held at the 2012 Reggae Film Festival. She wrote and directed Ding, a short film that screened at the Kingston on the Edge Urban Art Festival (2013) and at GATFFEST in June (2017). Summer School, a TV pilot written by Mezan, was awarded a Certificate of Merit in the nationally recognized Jamaica Cultural Development Commission’s (JCDC) Creative Writing Competition (2014). She was awarded a JAFTA Propella! grant for Going Down a short film that premiered at the Trinidad and Tobago Film festival (2018). Going Down has screened at the Denton Black Film Festival in Texas, USA; Black Femme Supremacy Film Festival in Baltimore, USA; Rapport Festival in Brixton, UK; Women’s International Film and Arts Festival in New York, USA; and Hairouna Film Festival in Bequia Island, St. Vincent.

Her feature-length screenplay ‘Bluefields’ was a semifinalist in the Screencraft Screenwriters Residency Program (2017) and was a winner of the ReelJamaica Film Lab Pitch competition. She produced Mango Wars (2017), a short film awarded funding under the JAFTA Propella! initiative. Mango Wars has screened at multiple festivals and recently won the viewers choice award at GATFFEST (2019). She founded a peer review screenwriting group where fellow screenwriters in Kingston, Jamaica can study the craft and critique/analyze pages from each other’s in-progress screenplays. She offers script notes and coverage to scripts in the development and pre-production phases.

A Calabash International Literary Fund Fellow, her poetry has been published in The Caribbean Writer, POUI, Susumba’s Book Bag, Firestick, The Jamaica Observer’s Bookends and On The Dark Path: An Anthology of Fairy Tale Poetry. Her poem Under the House was the recipient of the 2018 David Hugh Literary Prize. In her free time, she can be found watching the latest superhero flick, reading (preferably on the beach) and when the moon is full she reads her poetry (out loud).

Maria A. Hitchins is a multifaceted Jamaican who holds a wealth of experience in Media, Tourism, Education, and Dance. She is the founder of 'Dancers of Jamaica', an award winning dance advocacy network that promotes all things dance connected to Jamaicans, at home and abroad. She has been on stage since the age of three, performed with multiple established groups such as the Jamaica Musical Theatre Company, Tony Wilson’s Modern School of Dance, Stella Maris Dance Ensemble, and has toured with Shaggy.

Her performance history is complimented by roles in media as a producer for KFC’s On The Verge TV talent show, Jamaica Travel Channel and is a former production manager and producer at RE TV.

Maria was recently featured in the Wall Street Journal for using dance to demonstrate the relationship between Jamaica's inflation rate and the economy, as part of a Bank Of Jamaica initiative; Last year she also remounted an exhibition titled “Di Good Tingz Dem”, which explored Jamaica’s Dancehall fashion history, as part of the Rex Nettleford Arts Conference.

Miss Hitchins is an adjunct lecturer in Dancehall at the Edna Manley College, where she created the first accredited Dancehall dance courses available in the Caribbean, while pursuing a Master of Philosophy in Cultural Studies, researching the lived experiences of Jamaica’s street dancers.

He holds a B.A. in Communications and a M.A. in Public Communications and has used these, as well as his work in the arts, to provide vehicles for delivering a wide range of workshops to address a number of topics for corporate clients and specific demographics. Topics addressed have included team building, management and leadership skills, organizational issues, customer service, staff development and individual/team motivation. He also offers training and education in specific fields in the entertainment industry and a focused set of seminars on HIV and AIDS education.

His many interests have allowed him to cater to a wide variety of clientele including the Sandals and Beaches chain of Resorts as well as many public and private sector entities.

BIOGRAPHY

Fashion Designer and Illustrator, Ayanna Dixon has trained both at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts and The Art Institute of New York. After studying in New York, Ayanna moved home and started her business ASD. She is a Branson Entrepreneur, Scotia Bank Vision Achiever and has placed second in Jamaica's first reality television Fashion Designing contest Mission Catwalk, shown at Miami Beach International Fashion Week, received the First Global Banks Fashion Grant and represented Jamaica at the International Fashion Showcase in London and CARIFESTA XIII.

ASD was founded in 2010 by trained fashion designer, Ayanna Dixon. Originally ASD hosted two lines; Custom clothing for the Caribbean woman and Illustrated lifestyle items. After following her fashion design dreams Ayanna realised a shift in her love and began to do only illustrated products in 2017. ASD's distinctive collection has been sold in 3 of Jamaica’s top boutiques and plans of taking the brand internationally are already in the works.

All ASD products are made locally in Kingston, Jamaica. Our designer/illustrator creates everything with a little magic and love with her small team of Jamaican based artisans and experts.

In this the final episode of Season 1, we explore what the listeners wanted to know about. Questions were submitted anonymously and via email and as always were answered candidly and honestly. With all the plastic surgery at a high now and men tend to love big breasts and butt. Do you think Jamaican men are attracted to the plastic (fakeness) and can they even tell if the woman had any work done?

Who is your ultimate interviewee?

Have you ever had to “fire” a patient?

What scares you most when you are about to take a major step with your creativity? For example, launching a new single.

How do you manage the naysayers and critics who question or doubt the seriousness, competence and passion with which you pursue both careers in music and medicine? What are the emotional and other resources required and how did you develop those resources?

So it doesn't look like you grew up with sisters...what was it like for your mother in a household of men ...meaning, how did she navigate nurturing all of you yet maintaining her self-identity and position as a strong, grounded woman? Again, an assumption, but I really don't think it's wrong. Hearing her perspective from her own mouth on the programme would be nice.

How do you negotiate to be your true self with the demands of the world for you to conform or be somebody else? Example, being a doctor, lawyer, teacher; not an artist, farmer, photographer, etc.

Rephrase: How do you become your authentic self when society has a framework for you to become someone else?

What inspires your changing hairstyles? Are you ever afraid of what people will think?

When are you going to drop the next album?

What are the attributes you would look your soulmate? What qualities must they possess?

How deeply does the question "what's next" irks you as a creative? And what are some of your experiences (and processing of those experiences) with creativity blocks? Do you think society is sensitive enough towards the creative processes of artists to include creative blocks? And what can be done to cultivate that?

How would you describe your transition or growth...or evolution rather... from the little boy at Mona Prep to Dr, Mario Evon, Guthrie? And how has it impacted your emotional self and personal growth?

I feel like your family has a nice little dynamics about it. I don't know them personally but I don't get the sense of toxic masculinity (meaning the over-exertion of societal ideas of masculinity) having being a part of the makeup. I feel like love existed in very expressed ways and this is evident in the way you talk to/with each other on the respective Talk Truth episodes. Alot of men have never experienced that, and women too, and would appreciate hearing about the experience. So my question is, what was it like growing up with a father and a brother who didn't exist with the fear of love between men; and how has that transcended as you and your brother got older?
