In the middle of a party in Luke 14 – Jesus tells the religious leaders some home truths. He observes that they are all trying to get honour and position for themselves, whilst ignoring and dishonouring a man who is suffering. At the end of the chapter Jesus points out that the man who is suffering is more likely to be in the Banquet at the end of time than they are! Everyone is invited to the party – but the rules have changed!

How do you see God? How does God see us? Both views are often distorted. Yet Jesus comes to us unfiltered. Are we more concerned about how it looks than how it really is? Where do we strive for real acceptance and affirmation from? The more we strive for God’s presence, seek after him, surrender to his ways, the less we need the attention, or even the affirmation of others. Real holiness is found this way.

Introducing holiness to the church by not focusing on external images. The death of Jesus manifested not only God’s love, but His holiness too. The call of the Christian life is that Jesus would be seen through you. It's an all-in life with no half measures. We assume serving God and living life in worship to God, means you won’t enjoy life now. Instead, the Lord’s blessing is you have a right relationship with God showing both his love and holiness.

Song 2, this servant song, describes God’s Spirit endowed servant, bringing onto earth what heaven has planned. Isaiah does a lot of prophesying and no one seems to be listening - he gets discouraged, like the rest of us. However, what God has in store is much bigger than he, (and us), can imagine. Isaiah is encouraged in his own ministry to keep going, (also relates to Jesus), TO SHOW that we cannot measure success on what we expect, or see. We must put the results in God’s hands. The challenge is what we do with discouragements.

When it comes to defining who God is, he defines himself according to who he is to us - humans, his creation! He is our peace, banner, provider, the one who sees us, makes us holy and is with us.

When Jesus says he is the Alpha and Omega, he is saying he is everything - the beginning and the end - but he promises that at the end - he will come, to be with us!

God names Gideon mighty warrior - but before Gideon can step into that name, he has to name God - and he calls him - The Lord is Peace.

Gideon understands that God hasn’t come to get him, or point out all his failings, or prove how weak Gideon is, God is for Gideon. In peace God has come to put our relationship right with Him with each other and with the world.

A big question for a Christian is how can I hear God for myself? Probably, the supplementary question would be how can I know it is God? We hold three core beliefs on this:

- God does still speak today

- Everyone can (not necessarily does) hear God.

- God is speaking, are we listening?

Gideon is still unsure so asks God to confirm and reconfirm what He had said. How to hear God and ask for proof even amongst our doubts is part of our walk with Jesus. God graciously responds, not because of any unbelief, but because His purposes are divine. Gideon, really at heart was not looking for a sign, but for more understanding of God. This is addressing where we need God to grow us, as God knows what we need. Likewise, Gideon received what was needed, and you will too.
