<![CDATA[“Hard Work Pays Off”, “You Snooze, you lose” or “Quitters never win, Winners never Quit”. Nowadays, inspirational quotes like these follow you around wherever you look. From ‘crypto-bros’ to entrepreneurs like Gary Vaynerchuck, being on the grind seems to be all the rage. But why do we want to work on ourselves this much? Is success really a matter of hard work or does luck also play a role? And does it make you a loser if you do not succeed? In this lecture dr. Thijs Lijster explains where the need to succeed comes from, and if it is realistic.

And while the story of robots controlling our very reality might have seemed a silly science-fiction premise then, the idea of life being a mere simulation kept philosopher Descartes up for nights back in the 1600s. What other philosophical ideas are there to be found in The Matrix?

But is this really the way to save the oceans? Professor Simon Bush disagreed with the conclusions drawn in the documentary. Although it does rightfully shed light on some instances of abuse within the fishing industry; it focusses on the wrong problems. So what is going wrong at open sea?

Is Big Brother watching us? And who is Big Brother in today's society? Vivien Butot is doing his PhD research at Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences for Centre for BOLD (Big Open and Linked Data) Cities, in which he focuses on the relationship between developments in the field of smart cities and privacy. For Studium Generale he recorded a podcast on whether or not 1984 is a good metaphor for the surveillance society as we know it today. Or did Aldous Huxley (Brave New World) and Franz Kafka (The Trial) had a better foretelling ability?
