Generosity isn't fundamentally about money or time or energy. It's a spiritual identity. It flows from understanding how much grace and mercy has already been poured out on you in Christ. When you grasp that, giving stops being an obligation and starts being a natural overflow.. And it only flows from one place: understanding how much you've already been given in Christ.

A standalone message between our Nahum and Habakkuk series.

In this final message in the Storming the City series, Brayden unpacks what Nineveh's fall actually teaches us about God: that he is not indifferent to evil, that sin is more serious and more embedded than we want to admit, and that the only place to stand when judgment comes is in Christ.

Closing out the Storming the City series on the book of Nahum.

He shares a story about David Stonestreet who jokingly said, "You just stole my treasure!" when Stu encouraged him. David referenced Matthew 6—if you get the encouragement of men on earth, you've had your payment in full. That conversation has oriented Stu's life for years.

Stu describes two kinds of heavenly treasure: wealth you enjoy now (people surrounding you at church, recent acquisitions) and "Kingdom superannuation" (people you won't see again until heaven—like his friend Fiona who'll come running saying "We did it!"). When you invest in another person's life, you are building treasure in heaven.

Nahum 1:15 says, "Look there on the mountains, the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace." Beautiful feet run because they're excited the enemy has been defeated. The big enemy, death, has been defeated. God has defeated our enemy. So get busy building treasure in heaven.

Nahum 2 describes Nineveh's siege. God mocks them: "Guard the fortress, brace yourselves. Have a go, get all your troops out because I'm coming." The invaders are invaded. Ancient records say the rivers they built as protective barriers flooded and undermined their own gates. Their silver, gold, endless supplies—plundered. Like the man in Jesus' parable who built bigger barns: "You fool, tonight your life will end."

We are our treasure. Don't go to heaven by yourself. See if some other people will come with you. Some of our dearest treasure started as strangers. The gospel is the greatest announcement of peace. Sin judged at the cross. Death defeated in the resurrection.

What makes us uncomfortable? Injustice. Scrolling past news about families destroyed by war, greed, and power. The boss who gets away with it. The bully's words. The unwanted divorce. Chronic sickness. God cannot stand injustice. Nineveh was guilty: Assyrian kings left inscriptions boasting about impaling prisoners, flaying people alive, piling heads outside cities. God dealt with them. The city fell with a flood that weakened the walls. All that's left are ruins. The Lord deals with injustice, and that's a comfort for His people.

But here's the problem: The good news is comfortable for Christians, not comfortable for a world that needs saving.

Imagine going to Sydney Zoo to see a lion behind a metal fence. Beautiful, majestic. You fork out $150 for the encounter. A trainer explains the facts. You go home satisfied. But now imagine that lion is sitting on your couch. No barrier. Guess who's in charge? You move your life around what the lion wants. The lion is lord.

Some of us treat Jesus like a lion we admire behind a fence. We love to see Him Saturday night, hear about Him on TikTok, as long as He stays in the cage. But if He's roaming our living room, we're uncomfortable. God isn't just coming to Nineveh. Jesus said: "The kingdom of God is near." God's coming home. And when the lion's in the living room, it's uncomfortable.

Culturally, we have good self-esteem but little self-awareness. A Boston philosophy professor asked students to write about a struggle over right and wrong. Most couldn't. Why? "We haven't done anything wrong." We need to lower self-esteem and increase self-awareness. We live like we've done nothing wrong. It's just a lie, just drinks, just sex, just a temper, just a joke. The lion isn't caged and He thinks sin is vile. We're stuck as God's enemies and the kingdom is coming.

But the good news isn't just that God's coming to end sin. The good news is God's already done it. The lion's already moved in. So don't live like you're at the zoo. When Jesus says "repent and believe," be self-aware—notice our sin, ask forgiveness, turn away. God's patience is not permission. Christians: no need to be uncomfortable reading Nahum. Take comfort that God will judge injustice. We have a powerful lion dwelling in our hearts who judged us guilty, but take comfort that He put that judgment on Jesus. 

As we take comfort, have self-awareness. Repent and believe.

Stu launches our new series "Storming the City" by tackling Nahum, a confronting book about God's anger, jealousy, and judgment on the Assyrian Empire. But this isn't a different God from the New Testament, it's the same God who is just, powerful, patient, and our refuge.

A hundred years before Nahum, God sent Jonah to preach judgment to Nineveh. Shockingly, they repented. God showed mercy. But a century later, they'd returned to their evil ways. Nahum reveals what happens when mercy is ignored: delayed judgment is not cancelled judgment. Don't mistake God's patience for permission.

The Assyrian Empire was the dominant world power, ruling through fear, violence, and psychological terror. Their capital Nineveh seemed untouchable. But in 612 BC, floodwaters from the Tigris River weakened the city walls and the empire fell, never to rise again. What God declares through Nahum, God brings about.

Stu unpacks God's jealousy (not a character flaw, He's jealous for His glory and for creation being used properly), God's terrifying power over creation (His way is in the whirlwind and the storm), and God's heart as our refuge for those who trust Him. All that anger toward sin is toward those who oppose Him, but for those who turn to Christ, there is refuge.

This isn't just ancient history. Just like Noah's flood, just like Nineveh, one day God will enact justice on this world. People will be unprepared. But mercy is real, just as real as judgment. The message is clear: Don't ignore God's justice, don't underestimate His power, and don't miss His invitation.

Guest preacher Sean Nolan (author of The Way He Walked) joins us in a sermon gap week to share a life-changing moment: sitting in a Sydney restaurant with three of Billy Graham's crusade directors, listening to impossible-sounding stories of stadiums filled with 80,000 people and radical salvations. Driving home, he thought: "Their God is powerful. My God is not that." Then he realised: same God, two very different ways of walking.

The Coffee Token Gospel: Sean pulls out a White Horse coffee token. It IS a coffee—but it's also NOT a coffee until you possess it. Same with the gospel. It's a free gift, but you have to possess it by walking in it. Joshua 3:5 reveals the paradox: God says "I'm giving you this land" but also "you've got to possess it." It's both.

Hog Pen to Home: The Prodigal Son didn't go from hog pen to another hog pen (the older brother's millstone forgiveness). He went from hog pen to loving provision, reinstated as a son. The father ran toward him. God runs toward His children when they turn to Him.

The Gift of Death: God allows us to be in need so we'll come to Him. He can gift you the death of an old thing: old sins, old habits, old pain. Sean shares his story of losing 25 kilos after God said, "You can't deal with your hunger. Ask me to deal with it." God can also heal trauma, Sean cared for his abusive father for 15 years while he was dying, but through the gospel, the Lord took away the pain.

37 Years of Light: The star Arcturus is releasing light right now that will take 37 years to reach Earth. Billy Graham said his powerful ministry came from one thing: "I never miss a day in the Word." What if you used that star as a marker, 37 years of walking with the Lord?

300 Years of Legacy: The star Canopus, its light takes 300 years to reach us. What legacy are you building for your grandchildren and great-grandchildren? Sean wears his grandfather's signet ring. 30-40 grandkids and great-grandkids walking with the Lord because of his example.

The Story of Phoebe: A single woman under 30 was given the original manuscript of Romans to carry to the church in Rome. She had no idea what she'd been given. Bible colleges, institutions, and societies were built off that one letter. What ordinary thing has God given you?

The Basics: If we want God to do fruitful and fantastic things, we need to get the basics right: Walk with His Word, prayer, spiritual community. Men—read your Bible in front of your children. Model that for them.

"Have you ever had someone say, 'I'll pray for you,' and then actually do it?"

Yes? Some of us. And what's even more awesome is when they actually follow up weeks later and ask, "How did it go?" You feel amazing, don't you? You feel seen, loved, cared for.

In John 17 Jesus, before the cross, before you even existed, prayed for you and for me.

JESUS PRAYS THREE THINGS

1. PROTECT THEM (vv. 11-12)

Jesus prays for protection so they'd remain faithful. When we become followers of Jesus, it's not just us holding on to God. God holds on to us. Jesus prays: "Father, hold on to them even when they feel like giving up. Be their comfort, their strength. Protect their faith, protect their soul."

2. GIVE THEM JOY (v. 13)

Jesus isn't praying they'd be happy and things would go nicely. But you will have peace in that trouble. You will experience grief, but in that grief, you'll still have joy. Not happiness—joy. A joy that will not be taken.

3. SANCTIFY THEM BY TRUTH (vv. 16-17)

Sanctify means being set apart, made whole, changed, transformed, renewed. Here's how God changes us: not by vibes, not by feels, not by trying harder—but by truth. The Word of God. If you are a follower of Jesus and you want to grow as a Christian, you need this. You cannot grow as a Christian without it.

God's Word:

• Exposes our sin
• Shapes our desires
• Redirects our lives
• Brings us joy in dark moments

We need God's Word not occasionally, not when we feel like it, but regularly, deeply, personally.

It's the weird one between Good Friday's crucifixion and Easter Sunday's resurrection. The filler episode. The Saturday when, as a kid, Brayden would wake up annoyed: "Still no chocolate?!"

But Easter Saturday isn't filler. Brayden slows down to dwell in a moment most churches skip over. It's the moment when the disciples aren't filled with anticipation, but devastation. For them, the story's over.

But John tells this story carefully, slowly, inviting us to see three crucial truths:

1. Jesus Really Died

John 19 begins with the burial. Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, both secret disciples who feared the Jewish leaders, suddenly step forward with courage. Joseph asks Pilate for Jesus' body (a request requiring enormous courage). Nicodemus brings 75 pounds of myrrh and aloes, the honour normally given to a king.

These quiet, cautious followers become bold. While the public disciples fled in fear, the secret disciples stepped up. God uses the unexpected.

They wrap Jesus with spices and linen according to Jewish burial customs. They place Him in a nearby tomb where no one has been laid. John includes these details for a reason: Jesus was truly dead. The burial was public, witnessed, and real.

If Jesus didn't truly die, the resurrection is meaningless. John leaves no room for doubt.

2. The Tomb Really Was Empty

Mary Magdalene sees the stone has been moved. She immediately runs to Peter and John: "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb and we don't know where they have put him."

The assumption is: Grave robbery. Not resurrection.

Inside, they see something strange: The linen wrappings are there. The cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus' head is folded separately. If someone had stolen the body, they wouldn't have stopped to unwrap it neatly and arrange the burial clothes.

Grave robbing would be hurried, chaotic. This scene is orderly. The body is gone.

Faith begins here—in the tension between confusion and belief. They believe something has happened, but they don't fully understand what it means yet. Their belief comes before full understanding.

3. The Resurrection Transforms Everything

John leaves us with a question: The tomb is empty. Why?

History offers possibilities:

• The body was stolen? Doesn't explain the neatly folded grave clothes.
• The disciples invented the story? They're confused and afraid, not bold conspirators. And the first witness is Mary Magdalene—a woman whose testimony wasn't valued in the first century. If you're inventing a story, that's not the detail you include.

The simplest explanation: Jesus rose from the dead. And if that's true, everything changes. The cross wasn't defeat—it was victory. Sin is dealt with. Death itself has been defeated. Easter declares that death does not have the final word.

Hope is no longer wishful thinking. It's reality.

New life is possible—not just someday in the future, but beginning now. The fearful disciples become courageous witnesses. The power of the resurrection is already changing lives.

In a quiet morning, in a garden, an empty tomb, a few confused followers realize something extraordinary has happened.

The tomb is empty. Consider what it means. Ask yourself the same question the disciples faced: What if it's true?

Because if Jesus really rose from the dead, then death is not the end. Hope is real. And a new kind of life is possible.

Tim kicks things off with lyrics from 90s Christian ska-punk band The OC Supertones—and summarises his entire sermon in one line: The Father cares for you.

But then, like a Christopher Nolan film (Tim's favourite metaphor tonight), we work our way back from the ending to understand how we got there.

Jesus is hours away from His arrest, trial, and crucifixion. He tells His disciples a riddle: "In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me." The disciples are confused. We, knowing the end of the story, understand exactly what He's talking about.

Jesus knows the disciples are about to experience weeping, mourning, and grief while the world rejoices. But He also knows their grief will turn to joy when He comes back from the dead. And He uses this powerful metaphor: "A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come. But when her baby is born, she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world."

Incredible pain and anguish, toil and hardship, overcome by the triumph and joy of the child being born.

Tim pauses here with deep empathy to acknowledge that this isn't always everyone's experience. Sometimes the pain and anguish continues. But all pain, all anguish, all grief is taken up by Jesus' death and resurrection. Jesus isn't being flippant, He's identifying with the pain of the world while setting hope before us that joy is to come.

But here's what Tim focuses on: You have direct access to God the Father.

Jesus says, "Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name." The disciples won't need to ask Jesus anymore, they get to talk directly to God. Through that, their joy will be complete.

Tim shares a hilarious illustration about trying to get letters from the Prime Minister and Governor General. You don't just call up "Albo" and "Sammy" like mates. You fill in online forms, junior admin assistants get notifications, it gets pushed up to middle management, printed, passed to executive assistants, signed with an auto-pen. You're skeptical their hands ever touched it.

Jesus' point is that's exactly NOT how God operates. Jesus isn't God's executive assistant handling things God's too busy for. "In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. No, the Father himself loves you" (vv. 26-27).

The Father Himself loves you.

Whatever your family situation, whatever your experience of fathers or fatherhood or fatherlessness, here's the gospel truth: Those who trust in Jesus, who love Jesus, who believe He comes from God, have this promise: The Father of this created world, the God of the cosmos, knows you, loves you, hears your direct prayers, delights to give you whatever you ask for.

You have instant, immediate, direct, valued access to the very presence of the living God. No online forms. No admin assistants. You have access to God the Father right now by virtue of being a Christian.

The Father cares for you. Jesus won victory for you. The Holy Spirit is always with you, uniting you to the Father through the Son.

"I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world" (v. 33).

Christians have peace in this troubled world. Not a trouble-free life, Jesus doesn't promise that. But peace in the midst of a troubled life.

And here's the crucial difference: Jesus is NOT saying, "I have overcome the world, so if you try really hard, you too can overcome the world just like I did." That's the message of our influencer age: "I've overcome my addiction, my mental health struggles, my singleness, my lack of fitness. If you follow these 10 steps, buy my course, you too can have victory like me."

That is NOT what Jesus is selling.

Jesus is not a successful influencer who cracked the code. You can't disciple-maxx your way to overcoming the world. The influencer promise brings hopelessness and despair, not comfort, hope, and peace.

Our confidence is in Christ's finished work—His perfect life, His substitutionary death, His firstfruits resurrection. That's what guarantees our safe and secure inclusion in His restored kingdom. We overcome the world by His work, not ours.

If you're a Christian, you can have peace in this troubled world. Not because of what you do, but because of what Christ has done.

Take heart. The Father cares for you.

At first, it seems like an obvious answer, of course we'd want Jesus right here with us! Jai tackles one of the most profound truths in Christianity: "Very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you" (v. 7).

Wait, it's good that Jesus left? It's better to have the Spirit than Jesus Himself physically present?

When Jesus was on earth, He was bound by physical limitations. If you wanted to be with Him, you had to be where He was. But when the Spirit comes, God is present with all of us. Always. Everywhere. The very Spirit of God dwells in every believer.

If we trust in Jesus, we are never alone. God is with you. You have 24/7 access to Him. No priest, no pastor, direct access through prayer, anytime, anywhere.

But the Spirit doesn't just give us constant access to God. He does three crucial things:

1. The Spirit Convicts of Sin (v. 9) - Not just "doing bad stuff," but the ultimate sin: not trusting Jesus. He exposes both sides of self-reliance; thinking "I'm good enough for God" OR "I'm too messed up for God." Both are you trying to be in control. The Spirit says: You're not in control. God is.

2. The Spirit Convicts of Righteousness (v. 10) - He doesn't just expose the problem; He shows us the solution. And it's not "try harder." It's this: Jesus lived the life you could never live, died the death you deserve, rose in victory, and gives you what He deserves, not what you deserve. Righteousness is received, not earned.

3. The Spirit Convicts of Judgment (v. 11) - Evil has been defeated. The cross isn't loss—it's victory. Satan, sin, death—defeated once and for all.

The question isn't whether Jesus is admirable. The question is: What will you do with this Jesus? You can't just take the golden rule and reject Jesus as Saviour. If He is who He says He is, you have to follow Him. Surrender all to Him.

And here's the beautiful part: The Spirit doesn't bring random new ideas or teaching. He points us deeper into Jesus—what Jesus has already done and will do. He illuminates God's Word and applies it to our daily lives. Ever opened the Bible and thought, "Wow, that's exactly what I needed right now"? That's the Spirit at work.

The Spirit's Primary Role: Make Jesus Bigger

The Holy Spirit doesn't point to Himself, to you, to experiences, or even to church. He points to Jesus. Everything the Spirit does is about making Jesus bigger, so we see Him clearly, know Him clearly, love Him more, rejoice in Him more, treasure Him above everything else.

Here's the test for whether something is from the Spirit: Does it make Jesus bigger in your life? Does it deepen your love for Jesus? Is it centred on Jesus? If not, it's not from the Spirit.

The question is simple: Will you listen? Will you respond? Will you follow Jesus?

We use the word "hate" casually these days, it's flippant, attached to immediate emotions. But when Jesus uses the word "hate" in John 15, He's talking about something far deeper and far more serious than Michael Scott hating Toby from The Office.

Why does the world hate Jesus? And why will it hate us?

The answer isn't comfortable, but it's essential: Jesus is divisive. Not because He's aggressive, vindictive, or engaging in rage-inducing clickbait. He's divisive because He's the light of the world. And when light exposes darkness, people don't always respond well.

From the very beginning, before creation itself, Jesus has been divisive. "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it" (John 1:5). Following Jesus is a choice between light and darkness. There's no middle ground. You're either with Him or against Him.

Because Jesus divides, He also exposes us for who we really are, fallen humans desperately in need of a Saviour. "If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have no excuse for their sin" (v. 22). The light exposes those living in darkness.

But here's the shocking part: We've been chosen by the divisive Son of God to be divisive ourselves. Just as Jesus is divisive, so are His followers. It comes with the territory of being a Christian.

Joel shows what worldly hate looks like, and then contrasts it with the spiritual disgust Jesus describes. The hatred Jesus talks about isn't just dislike or frustration. It's eternal separation from the Father.

But there's hope. Jesus hasn't left us alone. He's given us the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth who testifies about Jesus and empowers us to be witnesses. The same Spirit who convicts the world of sin dwells in every believer.

Yet Jesus is clear: If they persecuted Him, they'll persecute us. You might be labeled a bigot, ridiculed at work, kicked out of friendship groups, or worse. Christians around the world face threats, violence, even death. But persecution isn't the goal, victimhood isn't the goal. We've been chosen for this.

The encouragement? Live radically obedient lives. Let people reject you because of who Jesus is, not because of you. Abide in Him. Allow the Spirit to do the exposing. And remember: Being hated for following Jesus is a far lighter burden than the knowledge that people you love could be going to hell.

Jesus has already won. The darkness has not and will not ever overcome the light that is our Lord Jesus.

Stu opens with a video that made him cry: a children's hospital next to a football stadium where the entire crowd waves to the sick kids in the windows. One child has a sign: "Go Hawks." They made him feel like he belonged, like he was part of the team, even though he's fighting cancer.

But as beautiful as that act of kindness is, Jesus offers something even greater.

On the night before His death, Jesus uses the image of a vine to reveal the greatest love the world has ever known: the love with which the Father loves the Son. And shockingly, Jesus says He can share that relationship with us.

"I am the vine; you are the branches," Jesus declares. "Remain in me, as I also remain in you." This isn't just encouragement to get you through the day. It's the most powerful thing you have in your life—to belong to God through Jesus is to know what love is and how to love.

The choice every Christian faces: Will you abide in Jesus and become like Jesus, or will you abide in the world and become worldly?

From the temptation of concerts and digital screens to the subtle ways we fall in love with things that take our affections from Christ, Stu confronts our divided hearts. He shares his own story of walking into a pub to see his favourite guitarist, only to find a room full of motorcycle gangs, and realising he didn't belong there. Sometimes the Holy Spirit makes you uncomfortable for a reason.

Jesus says something shocking in verse 5: "Apart from me you can do nothing." Abiding means ongoing dependent union with Jesus, letting His words live in us. It's practical: through God's Word, prayer, obedience, and gathering with God's people, you abide in Christ.

Stu unpacks three powerful truths: the source of the greatest love (the Father's love flowing through Jesus to us), the measure of the greatest love (Jesus laying down His life for His friends), and the overflow of the greatest love (His command to love one another as He loved us).

Because if you abide in the world, you'll become like the world. But if you abide in Jesus, you'll become like Jesus. And that changes everything—your friendships, your family, your church, your community.

Then Judas asks: "Lord, why show yourself to us and not to the world?" Fair question. If Jesus is the Messiah, why not go big? Why not split the sky and silence the critics?

Jesus' response changes everything: "Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them."

This isn't distant future hope. This is now. Father, Son, and Spirit, making His home in you through the Holy Spirit. The Spirit teaches us, applies God's Word to our lives, and brings a peace the world cannot give. Not inner calm or positive thinking, peace that transcends understanding. Peace that steadies you in hospital rooms, holds you in grief, anchors you when you're fragile, quietens anxiety at 2am.

This peace doesn't change your circumstances. Jesus comes to you in your chaos and walks every step with you. You are never alone.

It challenges our view of heaven as just paradise without pain, reminding us that heaven is first about a person before it's about a place. And it asks where we're really placing our trust when life falls apart.

Cicadas live underground for seven years, surviving in darkness, sucking sap from tree roots. Then one day they dig up, emerge into blinding light, crawl up a tree, shed their chrysalis, grow wings, and fly. And they wee. Out of pure joy.

That's what becoming a Christian is like. You don't have to keep stumbling in the dark of your own sin. Jesus is the light who shows the way back to God.

But here's Stu's challenge: don't go back in the hole. Sin is sweet for a season. It's enticing, but it doesn't last.

Stu gets honest about why people leave the church—better friendships outside than inside, taking church for granted, or the world being too attractive. The yellow bead is our hope of eternal life. Revelation 21 paints the picture: no more death, mourning, crying, or pain. God dwelling with His people forever. A new heaven and new earth where the glory of God is the light.

It's not about what we do but who we're with. Jesus. Because of Him, God adopts us as His children. We belong to a new family. Eternal life is secured forever by the Holy Spirit.

Stu closes with the simplest question: How are you with your friendship with Jesus? If you've been wondering whether you still want to hang out with Him, Jesus' response is, "I never left you. I'm always here. And I love you."

But here's the beauty: we're more sinful and flawed than we dare believe, yet more loved and accepted in Jesus than we dare hope for.

Jesus doesn't die for His friends, He dies for His enemies. At just the right time, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. This wasn't God reacting. From day one, God planned to send His Son to die on the cross to take our sin so we'd be forgiven and made right.

Jai shows how everything in the Old Testament pointed to this moment, with hundreds of prophecies fulfilled. Jesus steps in as our substitute, absorbing the punishment we deserve. Our holy, just God can't shrug at sin. Justice demands payment. Sin creates a debt we can never pay. There's always a cost. Jesus took it on Himself.

The essence of sin is substituting ourselves for God. The essence of salvation is God substituting Himself for us. At the cross, justice and love meet in perfect harmony.

We've been justified by His blood, saved from God's wrath, reconciled. We're no longer enemies,we're children of the King. What do we do? Repent and believe. Receive what's been done for us.

Before eating the fruit, Adam and Eve lived in the light, they could see life clearly. When they ate, they went from seeing clearly to stumbling in darkness.

The black bead represents rebellion against God, the Bible calls it sin. Genesis 3 doesn't start with violence or murder. It starts with doubt: "Did God really say?" This is how sin creeps in, with suspicion and questioning. The serpent reframes God's freedom as restriction.

Why didn't God want them to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil? Here's what we miss: it's not just about knowing right from wrong, it's about deciding what's right and wrong. Adam and Eve wanted to be rule makers, not rule followers. That's the heart of sin: declaring we want to make the rules for our lives instead of trusting God.

Three perfect relationships were shattered in one bite: with each other (they covered themselves in shame), with God (they hid instead of running to Him), and with creation (work became painful).

This isn't just Adam and Eve's story, it's ours. We're all rule makers. Using John Chapman's illustration about two soldiers: one with a single-shot rifle, one with a semi-automatic, Jai explains it's not about how many sins we commit. When captured, the enemy doesn't care who shot more bullets. We're all enemies to God.

But God doesn't leave us in darkness, he gives us hope. Genesis 3:15 promises a serpent crusher: King Jesus. Right at the beginning, hope is on the horizon. Jesus came as the light of the world.

If you're a Christian, take sin seriously and run to Jesus. If you haven't trusted Jesus yet, don't wait. Don't leave in darkness tonight.

Stu Crawshaw starts this message by recreating his 90s Scripture classes where he used Jesus Beads and a skateboard with coloured tape to share the gospel. The white bead represents that God made us to be His friends: to walk in the light of His ways. But what does that actually mean?

Stu unpacks three truths about humanity from Genesis 2. First, we were created by God in His image, intentionally formed from dirt yet dignified by God's breath. We're designed to know God personally, reflect His moral character, and represent His rule on earth as vicegerents.

Second, we were created for relationship. God declared "it's not good for the man to be alone." We're made in the image of a God who exists in relationship: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. So God created Eve from Adam's rib. Adam's response is beautiful: "Bone of my bone, flesh of my flesh." Human flourishing is designed for community, not autonomy.

Third, we were created as moral and accountable creatures. God gave Adam and Eve freedom to eat from any tree except one. Why put the tree there? Because true relationship is gifted, not demanded. Their freedom was real but bounded, joyful obedience under God's life-giving authority.

Stu shares a story about getting kicked out of McDonald's for eating a KFC burger. The point? You can't eat KFC in Maccas, and you can't be truly human unless you obey God's commands. The same choice is before us: life or death, blessings or cursings. True humanity isn't found in self-rule but in joyful obedience to Jesus, where God's authority is life-giving rather than restrictive.

Jai McMordie launches this new series by taking us back to Genesis 1 and those crucial words: "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." Before time, matter, space, or history, before there was anything, there was God.

Jai walks us through the beautiful poetry of Genesis 1, showing how God created with order, beauty, and purpose. Six times we hear the pattern: "And God said... let there be... and there was." The first three days mirror the last three: day/night filled by sun/moon/stars, sky/water filled by birds/fish, land/trees filled by animals/humans. This isn't random. Every detail is intentional.

What makes this remarkable? God created with no point of reference. Jai has fun imagining animal mashups: elephant and butterfly, shark and horse, cat and crocodile. We need reference points. God didn't. He spoke into darkness and 100 billion galaxies were born.

The pinnacle of creation wasn't the stars or oceans. It was us. Genesis 1:27 says God created mankind in His own image. We are walking, talking statues to the glory of God, image bearers created to reflect our Creator. You were knitted together intimately, created to be relational, to love, and to experience joy like Him.

Creation itself is a silent sermon. Every sunrise, galaxy, wave, and mountain shouts that there is someone who made them. And you? You are a silent sermon declaring that someone made you. Whether you believe in God or not, we are made in His image.

Tim shows us that Isaac Watts never intended this hymn to be sung only during the Christmas season, but to help people understand the three advents of Christ, not just one. Most of us think about Christ's first advent (Christmas) and His second coming (the future return). But there's a middle advent we often miss: the coming of the Holy Spirit.

Tim traces "Joy to the World" back to Psalm 98, written centuries before Jesus' birth. Isaac Watts in 1719 deliberately "fed it through the language of the New Testament," creating a song that celebrates all three advents. Verse one is past tense: celebrating what God has already done. Verse two is present tense: calling us to praise God right now. Verse three is future: pointing to Christ's return.

Why would the God of the universe, the all-powerful, all-knowing Creator before whom angels tremble, want a personal relationship with you? And maybe more importantly: why don't you want a relationship with Him?

In this final part of our "God, Why?" series, Ethan unpacks Romans 8:1-17 to explore both sides of this profound question. He begins by acknowledging what makes this question so difficult: God's overwhelming bigness and our crushing awareness of our own sin.

Drawing from Old Testament stories of people struck down for touching the Ark, priests entering the Holy of Holies with bells on their robes (so others would know if they died), and Moses glowing after encountering God, Ethan paints the picture of a God who inspires reverent fear. How could that God want simple little me?

Hosea 11 reveals God as the Father who taught His children to walk, who lifts them to his cheek and bends down to feed them. This isn't just New Testament love, this is the God of the Old Testament too. He's like Aslan from Narnia: not safe, but good. Big and powerful, yet inviting us to call him "Abba" Dad or Father.

Romans 8 tells us our minds governed by flesh are hostile to God, unable to please him. We can't just show God our carefully curated "friendship profile". God sees everything. Every thought, every action, everything we've done and will do. So why would he want us?

Because he loves us. And it's all we need.

But then Ethan flips the question entirely: Why don't YOU want a relationship with God? Not theoretically, but actually. What's getting in the way of that relationship right now? Is it the desires of the flesh stopping you? Being too busy? Fear? Conflict with Christians? Your own sin? God's already answered why he wants you, he loves you and offers eternal relationship where you'll walk with him forever, never needing to leave his presence.

So what's your answer?

Jai McMordie tackles our universal struggle with anxiety, worry, and chaos. From Philippians 4:4-9, he exposes the false promises we chase: perfect circumstances, total control, comfortable lives, and reveals where supernatural peace is actually found.

Jai identifies three major peace-stealers: trusting in our circumstances, harbouring unconfessed sin, and most commonly, robbing ourselves of peace by worrying about the future or dwelling on the past. He shares his own battles (including waking up in a cold sweat about a Year 7 conversation) to illustrate how we all struggle with letting go of control.

This isn't just diagnosis, it's an invitation. Paul's words in Philippians offer a pathway: rejoice in the Lord's control, don't live in anxiety, chuck (not carefully cast) your worries to God, pray with thanksgiving, and receive the peace that guards your heart and mind. This peace isn't the absence of trouble; it's the presence of Jesus in the middle of the storm.

Jai paints a picture of Godly peace: a bird perched peacefully on a branch jutting from rocks behind a roaring waterfall. Not removal from chaos, but Jesus sitting with us in it, saying "you will not sink." God sees you. He knows the battles inside your heart and mind. And He's offering you the gift of His peace, but our hands need to be empty to receive it.

Starting with D.A. Carson's stark observation that "if you live long enough, you will suffer," Jai guides us through Romans 8:18-30 to explore God's purposeful design behind our hardest seasons. He dismantles common misconceptions, that God lacks control or goodness, and reveals four transformative truths about suffering that change everything.

Jai speaks with compassion to anyone walking through loss, illness, trauma, or despair. He addresses the lies we believe in isolation and extends a powerful invitation: suffering was never meant to be carried alone.

He speaks on why redemption through Christ required a world with suffering, how natural disasters point to the moral horror of sin, why Christians aren't exempt from pain (and what our suffering demonstrates to the world), and how the cross represents the greatest act of love precisely because suffering exists.

Starting with 90s skateboarding culture and songs like "Heaven is a Halfpipe" and AC/DC's "Highway to Hell," Stu explores why so many people associate heaven with restrictive authority rather than ultimate freedom. The cultural zeitgeist has always celebrated rebellion—so why would anyone choose eternal submission to God?

Using 1 Corinthians 13, Stu reveals the true nature of heaven: it's not about activities or autonomy, it's about being face to face with Jesus. Right now we "see through a mirror dimly," living by faith rather than sight. But in heaven, faith gives way to direct relationship—seeing Jesus face to face every single day.

Stu doesn't shy away from the doctrine of hell, presenting it as potentially a place where people continue to reject God even in eternity, "gnashing their teeth" not in regret but in ongoing anger at divine authority. It's a sobering reminder that not everyone loves Jesus—and those who don't won't want to be with him forever.

The challenge: if you find church boring or faith difficult, the issue might not be external—it might be your relationship with Jesus himself. Because when you truly love him, gathering with the kingdom becomes a foretaste of eternity.

Part of our God, Why? series.

Tim Beilharz kicks off Soul Revival's "God, Why?" series by tackling divine clarity and hiddenness. But first, three ground rules: God is a person, not a concept. Discipleship is about faith, not Bible trivia. And faith formation is intentionally inefficient—we live in a world of instant answers, but God doesn't work like ChatGPT.

Tim explores what God has already done: the heavens declare his glory, the scriptures tell his story, and Jesus is the exact representation of God's being. But then he challenges faulty assumptions. Do signs make believers? The feeding of the 5,000 proves otherwise—thousands saw the miracle and walked away. Does God have a specific plan for every decision? No—God's plan is simpler: love God, love others, grow in the fruits of the Spirit.

Is God really hidden? Tim flips it: God is not hiding—we're distracted. We're chasing promotions, scrolling screens, seeking to be known rather than seeking him. The Son of Man came to seek and save the lost.  God wants to know you more than you want to know him. He's not far—we're just caught up in smaller things.

The challenge? Study the world. Read the scriptures. Consider Jesus. Live by the Spirit. Ask, search, knock.

Using the metaphor of traveling through Queensland in a Kombi van—encountering cassowaries, platypuses, and everything else trying to kill them—Stu paints a picture of our world: gorgeous, but fallen. Dangerous, but not without hope.

Peter's final instructions in his letter come down to this: because the end is near and Jesus could return any day, live with clarity and love. Pray with sober minds. Serve with your gifts. Lead humbly. Resist the devil. Don't let pride cloud your humility. Don't become spiritually sedentary.

Stu asks:

• What are the things you're proud of that you couldn't exist without?
• How often do you check your spiritual health compared to your bank account?
• Are you talking to the Lord?

It isn't about religious performance or spiritual anxiety. It's about living with an eternal perspective that changes how we treat others, how we handle attacks, and how we invest our time. It's about urgency, not anxiety. It's about being active Christians, not sedentary ones.

As we look to Jesus, our ultimate example of righteous suffering, we’re encouraged to live with hope and courage in a world that often misunderstands the gospel. True freedom and transformation come not from avoiding suffering, but from walking through it with the assurance that God is at work in us and through us.

Stu explores how the gospel changes how we relate to one another, to authority, and to the world around us. Christianity is not passive — it’s a radical, world-changing way of life that responds to evil with good and transforms oppressive systems through love.

He reminds us that we don’t go to church; we are the church — a community of people who live for Jesus each day as living sacrifices, drawing others to Him through gentleness, courage, and grace.

The church is not a collection of the moral elite, but a community of the rescued. We are a royal priesthood and a holy nation, called to serve with humility, love others deeply, and reflect the grace of the One who chose us.

When we understand that the God who owns the stars calls us His treasure, it changes how we see church — not as a place we go, but as a people we belong to.

We know the end of the story — whether we believe it or not, we’re in the middle of it. In this sermon, Jai McMordie challenges us to stay alert and ready for action, living out the holiness that flows from who we are in Christ.

In every relationship, look for the sweet honey of Jesus, the truest friend who helps us embrace others just as He embraces us.

The virgin birth is not an optional belief, but the foundation for understanding how Jesus is both truly God and truly man, the only one able to save.

Brayden explores the unique role of Mary — significant yet not divine — and the way her humble obedience points us to God’s power and grace. We’re reminded that salvation is not us reaching up to God, but God reaching down to us in Christ.

Let’s not let familiarity dull the wonder of this miracle: God the Son stepped into our darkness to redeem us. We are called to teach it, defend it, and delight in it.

The Creed was written by people suffering for their faith, to help others hold on. And today, it calls us to the same — to trust Jesus not just with belief, but with our whole lives.

In this episode, we explore Psalm 33 and reflect on three powerful truths:

• God is our Father — personal, loving, and always listening.
• He is Almighty — His Word never fails, and His plans always come to pass.
• He is Creator — of heaven, earth, and each one of us. He made us, knows us by name, and never walks away.

We are His — not just by creation, but by redemption through Jesus. And that truth changes everything about how we live.

In 2 Kings 22, the Book of the Law is found during temple repairs, and Josiah’s reaction is immediate and heartfelt. Tearing his robes in grief, he realises just how far God’s people have drifted. But instead of despair, Josiah chooses repentance.

His story reminds us that partial deliverers will always fall short, but Jesus never will.

🔥 “For I am convinced that neither death nor life… will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” — Romans 8:38–39

At first, Joash is commended for doing right in God’s eyes, but only while Jehoiada the priest is around. Once Jehoiada leaves, Joash’s devotion collapses. The temple gets repaired… but Joash’s heart never is.

• God isn’t just after outward obedience — He wants a changed heart.
• True spiritual leadership leads us to deep faith, not just religious habits.
• The dangers of second-hand faith: Do you look Christian or live as one?

🛑 Don’t treat the sacred as expendable. Instead, take responsibility for your sin, and turn to the One who faithfully leads even when we are not faithful.

🔥 “The Holy Spirit is working harder on your heart than you are.” Let Him — not idols, fear, or appearances — be the one who repairs and restores your life.

💡 Jesus doesn't just fix broken temples. He rescues broken hearts.

In 2 Kings 5, we see a man who has everything… except the one thing he truly needs. His leprosy becomes a symbol of the deeper issue we all face: the sin, guilt, and shame we cannot fix on our own. But through the quiet voice of a young servant girl and the humbling simplicity of Elisha’s message, God delivers a powerful truth — His grace does the saving, not us.

• God’s grace is humbling — we can’t earn it, we simply receive it.
• True transformation starts with surrender, not strength.
• We don’t need to clean ourselves up before coming to God — He makes us clean.
• Like Naaman, we’re invited to lay down our pride and be made new.

Even in the warning of Gehazi, we’re reminded that being around grace doesn’t mean we’ve accepted it. Are we living transformed lives or just talking about them?

In 1 Kings 22, Ahab surrounds himself with prophets who only tell him what he wants to hear. But there’s one voice he tries to avoid—Micaiah, the true prophet of the Lord. Why? Because Micaiah speaks the hard truth, even when it's unpopular or dangerous.

This week, Jai challenges us to be like Micaiah: to listen to God's word, even when it confronts us, and to speak His truth, even when it costs us.

Ahab ignored the word of the Lord—and he died exactly as Elijah prophesied. We cannot outrun or outlast God's truth. His word never fails.

So we ask:

• Whose voice are you listening to?
• Are you willing to speak the truth, no matter the cost?
• Do you believe God’s word still stands today?

The truth may not be trendy, but it is eternal. Will you stand with it?

In one of the Bible’s most dramatic moments, Elijah goes head-to-head with hundreds of prophets of Baal and Asherah on Mount Carmel. It’s not even a contest. While the false prophets cry out in vain, Elijah’s God—the one true God—answers with fire from heaven and ends a long drought. It’s a clear display of who really holds power.

But shockingly, even after all that, nothing changes. Ahab returns to Baal. There’s no repentance. The kingdom continues its downward spiral.

Disillusioned and afraid, Elijah runs. He hides in the wilderness and asks God: What was the point? God responds—not with rebuke, but with purpose. Elijah is told to return and anoint those whom God has chosen. His mission isn’t over.

Through it all, we see God’s design:

1. A call to repentance – We cannot live with divided hearts. Idols must go. We must cling to Jesus alone.
2. A call to obedience – Faith isn’t just believing; it’s doing. It's action born from trust in God.

Is your heart divided?

This temple, with its beauty and precise design, is meant to reflect the holiness and wonder of God. It’s the high point in Israel’s journey from Exodus to the Promised Land—and now, to God dwelling among them.

But even in this golden age, cracks begin to form. Solomon's palace takes nearly twice as long to build as the temple, and his pride begins to grow. In verse 27, Solomon rightly acknowledges: “The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built!” Yet soon, that humility fades.

The temple becomes more of a trophy than a testament. And though the people don’t realise it, this temple is only a shadow—pointing to something far greater.

That something is Jesus.

Jesus is the true temple (John 2:19–21). Through Him, God dwells not in buildings, but in us. Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). The physical temple would eventually be destroyed—but the true temple, Jesus, was raised to life.

So the question remains: Is Jesus at the centre of your life?

When it comes to death, there is no cooling off period. The debt of sin is so great that it cannot be paid off. Only Jesus can change that.
