Dr Kelly Weinersmith is a scientist, pop-sci author, and podcaster. She is on the biosciences faculty at Rice University, a research associate at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, the Vice President of the American Society of Parasitologists and President of the Helminthological Society of Washington. After undergraduate and masters degrees at Bowling Green, she did her PhD in ecology at the University of California Davis. Her award-winning books include 2023's "A City On Mars" which we talk about here.

How do we sift through the optimism and scepticism about space exploration in general and living on the Moon and Mars in particular? How will we survive in the long term? Can we travel further, faster in space with nuclear propulsion? As NASA gets ready to launch Space Reactor-1 Freedom (SR-1) in 2028 we explore the details of this technology. This mission aims to demonstrate a reactor generating over 20 kW of power, using HALEU (high-assay low-enriched uranium) fuel. People can get nervous about nuclear, but this technology can (and will) revolutionise everything about space technology, power and energy here on earth, and clean processes much needed on and off world.

Patrick Rennie is a physicist and rocket scientist. He is a Fellow and board member of the British Interplanetary Society, president of the Mars Society, and a space engineer with experience in nuclear systems.

Dr Erika DeBenedictus is CEO of Pioneer Labs. She is a computational physicist and synthetic biologist working at the intersection of space science and the life sciences. She studied at Caltech before moving to MIT and did her postdoc under 2024 Nobel Laureate David Baker. She also trained at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. At Pioneer Labs they use several methods, including CRISPR and other forms of gene editing, to engineer microbes such as cyanobacteria to help make Mars more hospitable to earth life. The Great Oxidation event saw cyanobacteria transform earth's atmosphere into a world inhabitable for us and the same could happen on Mars but much faster. Mars was once very earth like - could it be brought back to its life-supporting state?

Dr David Wilkinson is an extraordinary polymath - a man with 2 PhDs and a published scholar across both science and theology. He is Professor of Theology and Principle of St John's College, University of Durham. He has authored many books including God, Stephen Hawking and the Multiverse. After initially working on the study of star formation and the chemical evolution of galaxies, he transitioned to systematic theology where he has become one of the leading researchers in the relationship between science and religion in the UK and overseas. He is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and the International Society for Science and Religion. He is a regular contributor to BBC Thought for the Day. He headed up the ECLAS initiative to help churches better engage with science.

David has always been an immense encouragement to me and greatly supported my doctorate on the Quaker astrophysicist Sir Arthur Eddington.

Dr John Nelson is a theologian who studied his Masters and PhD at Oxford University. He did his BA at the University of Nottingham. Dr Mirjam Schilling is a virologist researching the arbovirus family. She is a dual research fellow of Exeter College at Oxford University with a passion for exploring the impact of viruses on human and animal health. In February 2026 I gave the annual Darwin Day Lecture at Leicester Secular Hall on "The Genomics Revolution in Evolution" explaining how genomics has transformed and deepened our understanding of evolution. Dr Denis Alexander is the Emeritus Director of The Faraday Institute for Science and Religion and Emeritus Fellow of St Edmund’s College, Cambridge. Dr Alexander was previously Chairman of the Molecular Immunology Programme and Head of the Laboratory of Lymphocyte Signalling and Development at The Babraham Institute, Cambridge. Prior to that he was at the Imperial Cancer Research Laboratories in London (now Cancer Research UK), and spent 15 years developing university departments and laboratories overseas, latterly as Associate Professor of Biochemistry in the Medical Faculty of the American University of Beirut, Lebanon. There he helped to establish the National Unit of Human Genetics. He was initially an Open Scholar at Oxford reading Biochemistry, before obtaining a PhD in Neurochemistry at the Institute of Psychiatry in London. Dr Alexander writes, lectures and broadcasts widely in the field of science and religion. From 1992-2013 he was Editor of the journal Science & Christian Belief, and previously served as a member of the executive committee of the International Society for Science and Religion. He gave the Gifford Lectures at St. Andrews University in 2012 and these were published by CUP under the title ‘Genes, Determinism and God’.

Dr Joshua Sijuwade is Teaching Fellow in Philosophy of Religion at the University of Birmingham. He gained a BA in Theology at London School of Theology, a Postgraduate certificate in Education from Kings College London, before doing his MA in Philosophy at Birmingham and his PhD at York. He was visiting lecturer at London School of Theology before taking his post at Birmingham. His research interests lie primarily in the philosophy of religion, analytic theology, and metaphysics, along with related areas that intersect these fields. Joshua is a prolific writer and publisher of academic work, having published three books in the past two years and a multitude of journal articles since his career started in 2022.

Dr Keith Fox is Emeritus Professor of Biochemistry at Southampton University. After doing his degree, two masters degrees, and then PhD at Cambridge University he became a Research Fellow at Emmanuel College at the University of Cambridge before moving to Southampton University. His research interests concern DNA structure and its recognition, and his scientific work has been published in over 200 papers and articles. He was Senior Executive Editor of Nucleic Acids Research from 2008-2021. He has served for 6 years as Associate Director and then Director of the Faraday Institute until September 2021. In 2022 Keith was Interim Research Director at the Faraday Institute for Science and Religion in Cambridge. He has special interests in bioethics and genome modification. His book with Alexander Massmann Modifying Our Genes: Theology, Science and “Playing God” was published by SCM Press in March 2021. He has also recently been editor of the academic journal Science & Christian Belief.

ASTRONAUT

Dr Helen Sharman CMG OBE is Britain's first ever astronaut. Flying to the space station Mir in 1991, she was selected from a large range of applicants to take part in the JUNO mission to the Russian space station where she spent a week performing science experiments, working on the crew rotation and fulfilling mission requirements before returning to earth on a Soyuz, landing in Kazakhstan.

Dr Helen Sharman now works as an ambassador and science communicator for Imperial College London. She originally studied chemistry at university and worked for Mars chocolatier as a research scientist. Her space suit is now on display in the British Museum, and she played key roles in supporting and advocating for Tim Peake. She has continued her passion of space advocacy ever since the JUNO mission and serves as President of the Institute of Science and Technology.

Among her honours, she has been awarded various accolades in Britain and Russia. She is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, an FBIS, has been awarded 10 honorary doctorates, and has many schools across the world names after her. Her biography Seize the Moment was released in 1993 and she has also written The Space Place for children.

Dr Kim Holland is Research Professor at the Hawai'i Institute of Marine Biology.  Known as the 'Shark Lab', together with his team Dr Holland runs the sharks and predators research institute of the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, located on Moku o Lo'e (Coconut Island), in Kane'ohe Bay on O'ahu. Holland's work specialises in the organismic and supraorganismic biology of marine organisms. Given the unique settings, they take advantage of this by blending rigorous laboratory work with well-focused field experiments to investigate the behaviour, physiology and ecology of sharks and other marine species. Dr Holland has been doing this since the 1980s and is a pioneer of small boat research and the use of tagging. Innovating this into shark research, he launched the HIMB Shark Research Group and now engages in some of the most groundbreaking tiger shark work on the planet, using acoustic and satellite tracking.

Dr Nick Spencer is the best-selling author of books such as "Magisteria", "The Political Samaritan" and "Playing God". After studying undergraduate and masters degrees in English at Oxford University, he did a 2nd masters degree in literature, before a PhD in political philosophy and theology at Cambridge.  He is Visiting Research Fellow at the Faiths and Civil Society Unit, Goldsmiths, University of London and a Fellow of the International Society for Science and Religion. He has worked as senior research fellow in London at Theos Think Tank and writes across many media outlets on bioethics, politics, history and religion.

Julian Baggini is an English philosopher, journalist and the author of over 20 books about philosophy written for a general audience. He is co-founder of The Philosophers' Magazine, and has written for numerous international newspapers and magazines. His best-selling books include The Edge Of Reason, How The World Thinks, How The World Eats, The Godless Gospel, and Atheism: A Very Short Introduction. He has spoken and written globally for major outlets and we have met for several episodes of Premier Unbelievable. Howard Hall Productions is a natural history film production company specialising in marine wildlife and marine conservation films for television and large format theatre.  The company is owned and operated by Howard and Michele Hall. Howard and Michele Hall are perhaps best known for their underwater IMAX films.  In 1994 Howard directed the first underwater IMAX 3D feature, Into the Deep.  In 1998 Michele produced and Howard directed the IMAX feature Island of the Sharks.  In 2005 they returned to the IMAX 3D format by directing and producing Deep Sea 3D which was awarded Best Picture at the Giant Screen Cinema Association Conference and Best Large Format Film at Wildscreen 2006.  In 2009 the Hall’s released Under the Sea 3D.  This film won best cinematography at the Giant Screen Cinema Association Conference in 2009 and Best Documentary at the International 3D Society in 2010.  Howard was director of underwater cinematography for Primesco Productions’ Lost Worlds, MacGillivray Freeman Films’ The Living Sea, the IMAX 3D feature Return to Hubble, and was underwater cinematographer for MacGillivray Freeman’s Journey Into Amazing Caves.  In 2002 Howard was underwater sequence director and Michele was location manager for MacGillivray Freeman’s IMAX feature Coral Reef Adventure, a film in which both are featured on camera.  The Hall’s latest IMAX film, Secrets of the Sea 3D https://secretsoftheseamovie.com/#theaters , was released in 2022 and was a coproduction between Howard Hall Productions and Oceanic Research. Of the five highest grossing 3D films produced by IMAX Corporation, two were directed by Howard Hall.  Into the Deep has earned box office receipts of over $70 million and Deep Sea 3D has earned over $96 million. Between them, Howard and Michele have won seven Emmy Awards.  Howard has produced and/or directed many award winning natural history television films including a National Geographic Special which he co-produced with Michele, and four episodes of the PBS series Nature.  Howard also directed and Michele produced the award winning five-hour series Secrets of the Ocean Realm for PBS.   The Hall’s most recent film, Soul of the Ocean, is a 78-minute feature length film that was finished in 2022. Howard holds a BS degree in zoology from San Diego State University.  He is a member of the Directors Guild of America and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Michele is a Registered Nurse and holds a B.S. degree in Health Sciences.  She is a member of the Television Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Women Divers Hall of Fame.

Dr Philip Goff is associate professor of philosophy at the University of Durham. He is one of the main thinkers behind panpsychism today and a proponent of this perspective on the role of mind and consciousness in the universe. He recently converted to what he calls a heretical form of Christianity which sees God as limited when it comes to the problem of evil. Dr Simon Mitton is a Fellow of 3 Royal Societies, a Life Fellow of St Edmund's College, Cambridge University, and an incredible astronomer whose career has spanned one of the greatest eras of astrophysics. Professor Bob White is a Fellow of the Royal Society and Emeritus Professor of Geophysics at Cambridge University. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1994, and a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union in 2016. In 2018 he was awarded a Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society, which is their highest award, in recognition of a lifetime’s achievement in research. He is also a Fellow of the Geological Society, an elected Member of the International Society for Science and Religion and several other professional bodies; he serves on many of their committees. Since 1988 he has been a Fellow of St Edmund’s College, Cambridge, prior to which he was a student and Research Fellow at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He led a research group investigating the Earth’s dynamic crust: in particular the way in which enormous volumes of volcanic rock are produced when continents and oceans rift apart, and the movement of molten rock under active volcanoes. He has organised many overseas fieldwork projects and supervised over 55 PhD students at Cambridge, many of whom are now prominent in academia, industry, government and education. His work at sea has taken him to the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans and his research group is currently investigating the internal structure of volcanoes in Iceland. His scientific work is published in over 350 papers and articles. He is emeritus director of the Faraday Institute for Science and Religion in Cambridge.

Dr Gillian Straine is one of the most remarkable people I have ever met. A tremendous mind, she did a PhD in atmospheric physics at Imperial College London when she suffered from lymphatic cancer, undergoing a long and painful chemotherapy journey. Contracting cancer at such a young age was a significant blow and although she recovered, her journey of healing took much longer. Here she rediscovered her passion for the humanities and pursued theology. Eager to help as many as possible to recover physically, psychologically and spiritually from serious ill health, she became a priest and now runs a health and wellbeing charity that has served thousands of cancer sufferers and the terminally ill. She has written two books on cancer recovery and science and religion.

Dr Craig is a world renowned philosopher of religion and an authority on the discipline known as "apologetics". He authored the textbook we used as masters students and is one of the most famous philosophers of his generation. The architect of the Kalam Cosmological Argument, Dr Craig is a true polymath with doctorates in philosophy of religion from the University of Birmingham and a doctorate in theology from the University of Munich. He studied under legendary philosopher John Hick during his time in the UK and is now professor at Talbot School of Theology and Houston Christian University. Craig has published over 40 books and over 200 research articles. Theologically he is best known for his defense of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Dr Julie Keeble is senior lecturer in pharmacology at Kings College London in the faculty of medicine and life sciences. She is part of the aerospace medicine and extreme physiology group at KCL. Dr Keeble has sent over 30 experiments to space in her role with ISSET as a chief scientist. Her role in sending student experiments to the ISS as part of the science research rotation performed by astronauts has been life changing both in its results for the world but also for the prospects and inspiration of hundreds of teenagers that get this opportunity. Her research has included capsaicin, the element in chillies that we enjoy so much in our food, and its utility in medicine.

One of my own teams won the ISSET competition in 2022 and seeing that experiment launch to space last year was something I will never forget. Dr Keeble is a popular lecturer and world class scientist and I am delighted to bring our conversation to you.

The wonder of spacewalks 

NASA astronaut Ricky Arnold has spent 210 says in space across his 2 missions. He has completed 5 spacewalks (EVAs) for over 32 hours. A former schoolteacher, marine biologist and accountant, Ricky became a NASA astronaut in the class of 2004. After completing a NEEMO mission undersea in Florida as well as a caves mission in Europe, he flew aboard Space Shuttle Discovery on STS-119 in 2009. He then trained for long duration ISS missions and launched on Soyuz MS-08 in 2018 for Expedition 55/56. His many spacewalks were to repair and maintain the International Space Station. He conducted many science experiments on board including genetics ones.

I loved meeting and working with Ricky this summer and was delighted to connect with him again for this interview. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

And The Intelligent Design Trial 20 years later

Dr Kenneth Miller is professor (emeritus) of biology at Brown University in the USA. He is a world authority on cell and molecular biology and an early pioneer in computational biology. His work has spanned the globe and made huge inroads in protein science. He has written biology textbooks used en masse in high schools and universities. It is an immense honour to interview him about his career and research.

Professor Miller ended up being a key witness in the Dover vs Kitzmiller Trial in 2004 over the teaching of "Intelligent Design" creationism in schools. His work countering the claims of the ID proponents debunked the case made for ID in court and is well covered in the BBC Horizon documentary of 2005 "The War on Science" featuring Sir David Attenborough and Richard Dawkins. Miller himself is a catholic and has defended evolution against creationists and ID proponents, making the case that evolution is a compatible and friendly explanation.

WHAT IS GALACTIC ARCHAEOLOGY?

Dr Anke Arentsen-Ardern is an observational astronomer in the field of Galactic Archaeology at Cambridge's world famous Institute of Astronomy. She works on the formation and evolution of the ancient Milky Way and the properties of old stellar populations, using observations of old, metal-poor stars, typically utilising spectroscopy. Anke has been a Herchel Smith Fellow at the Institute of Astronomy and Research Fellow at Fitzwilliam College Cambridge University. She did her undergraduate and masters degrees at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands before going to Germany to do her PhD at the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics in Potsdam. She was then a Postdoc at the Observatoire Astronomique de Strasbourg, France. She has used telescopes across Europe and draws on global data to inform the earliest stages of the earliest stars in our galaxy.

"Galactic Archaeologist" is one of the coolest job titles I have ever seen. If you like astronomy and are interested in how its research is done, this will be a treat!

I loved talking to the outstanding Dr Meganne Christian, astronaut reserve for the European Space Agency.

Dr Meganne Christian is an ESA astronaut in reserve, appointed from the 2022 class. Meganne studied at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, and graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor of Engineering in industrial chemistry. In 2014 she received her PhD in industrial chemistry with several scholarships such as the University of New South Wales Research Excellence Award. During her studies and after graduation, she received several national awards for outstanding research. Meganne is currently working as exploration commercialisation lead for the UK Space Agency. She speaks 4 languages. From 2018 to 2019, Meganne served as a winter-over scientist at the Concordia station in Antarctica for the national research council of Italy, and the Italian National Antarctic Research Programme. As scientist in charge of atmospheric physics and meteorology at the French-Italian research base, she was responsible for various observatories, including radiation, meteorology, stratospheric lidars, chemical and physical atmospheric aerosols and infrared radiation for Antarctic clouds. She returned to the Concordia Station for a temporary assignment as scientist in charge of the atmospheric physics and meteorology observatories from October 2020 to January 2021. For these expeditions Meganne was also trained in firefighting, medical aid, rescue, and survival in extreme conditions. She participated in biomedical research run by ESA and various public activities to report about her experiences and activities during the winter-over. Between 2014 and 2022, Meganne worked as a research fellow then staff researcher at the Institute of Organic Synthesis and Photo reactivity and the Institute for Microelectronics and Microsystems in Bologna, Italy, as part of the EU scientific research initiative Graphene Flagship. During this time, she took part in two parabolic flight campaigns in 2017 and 2021 to test graphene coatings for thermal management in satellites. She successfully issued further articles and award-winning publications and served as ambassador for Graphene Flagship initiatives. From 2021, Meganne was a lecturer on Problem Solving and Decision Making for businesses, as well as a researcher for the National Research Council of Italy.

The Apollo era moon landings are perhaps humankind's greatest achievement and the space programs of the world are so beneficial to humanity in ways the majority of people don't understand. The cancellation of the Apollo program by Nixon was a terrible mistake and who knows where we would be right now if he hadn't.

I do believe that the biggest reason we see moon landing denial today is simply because we have not returned for so long despite having the technological capabilities. Hopefully the Artemis program changes that.

Dr Zachary Ardern is an evolutionary geneticist at the world-famous Wellcome Trust Sanger Centre in Cambridge. His work investigates the 

evolution and functions of young genes in pathogenic bacteria and viruses, working as a SEED fellow (Sanger Epidemiological and Evolutionary Dynamics) as part of the Thomson group. Tracing the genetic changes of organisms over time, and how genes evolved (and are evolving) is a relatively new field and helps inform work on human disease and problems such as antimicrobial resistance as well as telling us a great deal about the development of life on earth. You could consider Zach to be something of a molecular archaeologist.

Zach and I go back many years and it was wonderful to catch up with him again to talk science. I am immensely jealous that he gets to work at the Sanger, one of the homes of the Human Genome Project and my favourite science place in the world. Zach also has a background in philosophy so we have always been able to bond over that too. I hope you enjoy our discussion.

There are better, truer and more satisfying answers out there for the religious and non-religious alike. Creationists and those in intelligent design attempt to appear sophisticated and educated but this thinly veiled exterior is trying to hide a deep contempt and disrespect for science and the pursuit of truth.

Dr Sam Gregson is a particle physicist and science communicator who did his PhD at Cambridge University with the world-famous Cavendish Laboratory. Solving world hunger through potatoes! Dr Compton is associate professor of genetics at the University of Birmingham where she is based at the Centre for Computational Biology. Her research is in plant genetics using the potato as her model organism. Using modern genetics her hope is to tackle world hunger and malnutrition through efficient genetic research. This work has spanned the globe with collaborations in North and South America. She is on the board of the Genetics Society UK and has published much research in her field.

Dr Peter Swan is the Chief Architect of the Space Elevator Consortium and a Fellow of the British Interplanetary Society. He has a PHD in engineering from UCLA where his thesis was on space tethers. He is a partner of Zodiac Planetary Services and has been advocating and leading research on the feasibility and execution of the space elevator concept for decades. An accomplished engineer, university lecturer and academic, he has published a phenomenal amount of research on easier access to orbit as well as the solar system and sits on the board of engineering and space science for several universities. He formerly built and launched satellites commercially and lectures globally on the space elevator concept. He owns several patents in space engineering.

He has co-authored the book ""Road to the Space Elevator era": Space Elevator Books — International Space Elevator Consortium

Chris Sembroski flew in 2021 on the historic Inspiration4 mission. It was the first all-civilian space flight and is the subject of Netflix's documentary Inspiration4. Chris is an engineer for Blue Origin working on the New Glenn rocket and is a lecturer in aviation at Embry-Riddle University (his alma mater).

Inspiration4 flew to 364 miles, the highest altitude flown since the Hubble repair missions. During the 3-day flight the crew conducted science missions, earth observation and a number of vehicle tests as it was one of the earliest crewed flights of the Dragon.

Chris advocates for space wherever he can and enjoys science communication.

Frank has a PhD in Christian Apologetics but has no science background and is well-known for advocating for Intelligent Design Creationism which is pseudoscientific. Despite the overwhelming scientific evidence for evolution, and a long history of support for it from Christians including Charles Spurgeon, CS Lewis, Billy Graham and many more, apologists still fight it with all their passion (which is a shame).

Lieutenant Colonel Charles Gemar is a former NASA astronaut who flew on 3 missions on the Space Shuttle. A former army pilot and engineer, he graduated from the NASA astronaut class of 1986 after the Challenger disaster. After serving in several roles including CAPCOM, he flew on STS-38 in 1990, STS-48 in 1991, and finally STS-62 in 1994. He spent 24 days in space across his 3 missions and took on several unusual science programs during those, including molecular biology. He flew on Columbia, Discovery and Atlantis and we enjoy getting into the dynamics of his missions as well as his pre- and post-NASA career. He has flown one of the highest orbits of the shuttle and the lowest.

Lord Martin Rees is one of the most accomplished scientists of the 20th and 21st century. With over 500 research publications and a large number of popular books on science, he has made immense and significant impact on the fields of high-energy astrophysics, cosmology, galaxy formation, the origins of the cosmic microwave background, and in popular science communication.

Lord Rees is the 15th Astronomer Royal, following on from giants such as Halley and Dyson, and sits in the House of Lords. He is part of the golden generation of astrophysicists from the mid twentieth century that included Stephen Hawking, Fred Hoyle, Subraman Chandrasekhar, and Freeman Dyson among others. He became Plumian Professor of Astronomy and Director of the Institute of Astronomy at Cambridge University, where he is still active today.

Rees won the Wolf Prize and was President of the Royal Society for many years where he is still a fellow. He helped formulate the Longitude Prize for scientific breakthrough. He is part of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University, and founded the Centre for Existential Risk.

Dr Simon Conway-Morris is professor of Paleobiology at Cambridge University. He has been a Fellow of the Royal Society for 30 years and is a fellow of St Johns College, Cambridge. He is one of the greatest living evolutionary biologists and one of the minds behind convergent evolution which is a grand unifying theory across biology. He gave the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures in 1996. He is an expert on the Burgess Shale fossils and has travelled the world exploring the fossil record, especially regarding the Cambrian era. Phil Halper is a popular science communicator whose new book "Battle of the Big Bang", coauthored with Niayesh Afshordi, has just been released through University of Chicago Press. Here we discuss the premise of the book: which model will win out of the competing models for the beginning of the universe? And will the Big Bang survive new advances in astrophysics? We talk about the James Webb telescope, the mysteries of dark energy and dark matter, as well as the recent history of cosmology. Phil is also a fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and the creator of the popular YouTube series Before the Big Bang, which has had several million views. He was previously journalist in residence at the Penn State Institute for Gravitation and the Cosmos. A popular astrophotographer, his astronomy images have been featured in major media outlets around the world, and he has published in peer-reviewed journals.

Synthetic Biology (SynBio) has the power to transform our engagement with the natural world. With tools like CRISPR-Cas9, "impossible" is an ever diminishing word. As biology accelerates at a rate not seen since the 1950s, what are the biggest questions facing humankind as we try to avert climate disaster and beat disease whilst opening the frontiers of personalized, precision medicine? As a tech optimist, I had the chance to make the positive case at this year's ISSR gathering of scientists engaged with philosophy and theology, whilst also addressing the pessimistic challenges.
