We've all been there, those moments when life feels dark, heavy, and uncertain, like we're walking through a tunnel with no end in sight. But here's the good news: we don't walk through those tunnels alone.

In this message, we explore several kinds of dark tunnels we all face, and we turn our eyes to the One who calls Himself "The Light of the World." We also spend time in the opening verses of Isaiah 43, where God makes a powerful promise to be with us in the middle of life's hardest seasons.

No matter what tunnel you find yourself in today, there is hope, there is light, and there is a God who is ready to meet you right where you are.

Who Crucified Christ?

On this Palm Sunday we are remembering not only the entrance of Jesus into the city of Jerusalem, but we are taking a look at what happened just a few days later on a hill called Calvary. The question has sometimes been raised, "Who was it that crucified Jesus?" Was it the Romans, the Jews, the angry mob? Just who was responsible for His death on that old, rugged cross? That's what we are going to think about today.

The Love of God

He is a God who is a God of love. The Apostle Paul said in Romans 5:8, "God commended his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." The Holiness of God

A High Way and a Low

The right fork is called Sunset Trail, while the left road leads to the water park, the ocean, and the Recreational Building, when we have our worship service every Sunday. When we give instructions to guests who are unfamiliar with Ocean Lakes, we try to explain very clearly THE WAY for them to go. The Bible has a lot to say about "The Way." And that's what we are thinking about in the sermon today. The life which Jesus came to give us is a joyous life, and it is truly THE way.

The last Sunday in November this year is known in the church calendar as Advent Sunday. Advent means a time of getting ready for Christmas, making spiritual preparations for the observance of the birth of Jesus. If you are where you can get your Bible, look with us at the first two chapters in the gospel of Luke, that historian/physician, to whom we owe a great debt of gratitude for insight into the days of Jesus' birth. You may want to look also at Isaiah's prophecy, chapter 40, verse 9, from which we get the title of today's message: "Behold your God!"

Why Art Thou Cast Down?

If you ever have that "cast down" feeling, then maybe you can relate to the psalmist's feelings. So let's look together, first, at the cause, and then to the remedy. Mustard-Seed Faith

There is an interesting story in Mark's gospel, Chapter 9, about an unnamed man who brought his son to Jesus for healing. This compassionate father said that his son had been sick since he was a child. Jesus told the father that "all things are possible to him that believes." Then the man said something that we all can relate to: "Lord, I believe; help thou my unbelief." How much faith does it take for God to hear us? That's our subject for today - "Mustard-Seed Faith."

Learning to Listen

Journey Back to God

The Peril of Putting Off Jesus

In another translation, that verse reads this way: “While you are in the world, you will have to suffer. But cheer up! I have defeated the world.” That sounds like something we all could use, doesn’t it? For the next few minutes we will be thinking about how Jesus was able to deal with suffering, hardships, and all other kinds of situations.

How Can I Be Sure I Am a Christian?

But what is it that determines if a person is truly a Christian or not? That’s what we’re asking in today’s sermon: “How can I be sure I am a Christian?” Can one be sure at all? It’s a good question, and not only our peace of mind on this earth is based on our answer, but also this has a bearing on our eternal destiny.

A Pearl of Great Price

Do you know what a parable is? Perhaps you learned long ago that a parable is an earthly story with a heavenly meaning. There is a parable that Jesus told which is only one sentence long, although in Matthew’s account in chapter 13, it takes up two verses. 45 and 46. This is a story about something which was quite expensive. If you are where you can take your Bible, get it and let’s look together at this parable. It is quite a fascinating story, and it has a message for us all today.

How Big Is Your God?

The Cross Pull

Just a Tiny Little Minute

Half-Way Christians

The title of today’s message is one which may be confusing to some people: “Half-Way Christians.” One might say that a person is a Christian or not, but you can’t be just “half-way.” Actually this title is what is called an “oxymoron.” This is a figure of speech in which two or more words are put together which are actually opposites; they contradict each other. Some examples are: “minor surgery” – “new used car” – or “good grief.” Let’s look at this subject together this morning to try to get some answers.

Blowing the Trumpet

If you look at the title of today’s message, you may get the wrong impression that we’re thinking today about some musical subject - “Blowing the Trumpet.” Actually, Jesus was talking about some people of His day who did good deeds, but wanted everybody to take notice. It is a very interesting analogy that Jesus used, and there is a real important lesson for us all in His words from Matthew, chapter 6, verse 2. Finding Through Losing

A Reminder in My Pocket

The Will of God

A Package from Home

On this last Sunday in the year 2024, we who are gathered here at Ocean Lakes will be observing the meal such as Jesus shared with His disciples on that night before His crucifixion. This is known today by several different titles: communion, The Lord's Supper, the Eucharist, and perhaps other less-known titles.

The meditation before we partake of the elements of this observance is entitled, "A Package from Home." Can you imagine the thrill of receiving a package from loved ones back home if you are unable to be there at Christmas? Perhaps you have memories of such an event for you, or even for you this year. God has a special blessing for you; our prayer is that you may be able to receive His gift to you as you join with us now in this service.

Emmanuel Is His Name

How many different names can you think of which are used to describe Jesus? One person searched the scriptures and found 88 different titles by which Jesus has been called. We all may have a favorite word which we like to use in referring to Jesus, and as Christmas approaches, we are going to be looking today at one of the most beautiful names He has ever been given - the name “Emmanuel.”

The Fixin’ Man

There is a phrase which is sometimes used, particularly by those of us who may be from the southern area of the United States, which means to repair something that may be broken. We have “repair shops” for about everything, from automobiles to watches, home appliances, and a host of other things. But that word which southerners sometimes use, instead of “repair” is the word “fix.” “See if you can fix this.” And so today, at the risk of correct grammar, the message is entitled, “The Fixin’ Man.”

The Time Was Right

Anyone who knows how to prepare a delicious meal is quite aware of the need for proper timing - - how to make everything come together at just the right time. Otherwise, some dishes may be ready to eat far before others are ready, and the food can get cold - - or melted - - and the meal ends in a disaster. God sent His Son, Jesus, to the earth at just the right time - - not too soon or too late. This is what we're thinking about today, and what a wonderful job our Heavenly Father did in this! The Man Jesus Made Whole

He was healed, but Jesus used another word to describe what had taken place - the man was made WHOLE. This story ties right in with the Thanksgiving theme - that of giving thanks. Our prayer is that today’s message will help us all to experience true thanksgiving to God - and be made WHOLE also.

Living All Your Life

But the sermon today is not about politics or elections. It is based on the verse from Mark’s gospel, chapter 8, verse 35 - - the words of Jesus, where He talks about finding and losing. Gather the People

One of the most colorful individuals in the entire Old Testament is the man we know as Moses. He led the people out of Egyptian slavery to the very edge of the Promised Land. In Deuteronomy, chapter 31, we have the account of what Moses did just before the people were to enter that land which God had promised them many years before. He wanted everyone to be able to hear what he had to say, so what he did was the title of today's sermon: "Gather the People." What Moses said to them that day is also God's message to us. As the scripture says elsewhere, "He that hath ears to hear, let him hear."

Many family members have experienced the heartbreaking reality of sitting at the bedside of a loved one and listening closely to the person’s last words before leaving this earth. Those last words are usually cherished by those who hear them. Today’s sermon is centered around some of the last words given by the Apostle Paul, writing to young Timothy. His words were written from a Roman dungeon, where he was awaiting his death. These words are found in 2 Timothy, chapter 2. The Providence of God

Throughout the years of my pastoral ministry, I have often had people come up to me following the worship service and say something like this:

"Preacher, you really spoke to me today. Was that sermon meant just for me?" My response is always that I do not preach just to one person.

In Matthew's gospel, there is an account of what the chief priests and Pharisees asked Jesus, after he had given them some parables (earthly stories with heavenly meanings). Matthew 21:45 says that "they perceived that he spoke of them."

Our subject today is "Personal Preaching." Perhaps Jesus has something to say to you today. Let's listen and find out.

Ashamed of Christ?

Imagine something with me for a moment. Suppose you were to be arrested and forced to make a statement that you are a Christian, or you are not a Christian, what would your answer be? And let's suppose further that if you said you are a Christian, you would be executed on the spot, would that change your answer? Well, thankfully, most of us have not or will not have to face that situation. But the Bible tells of many who did have to make that decision, and countless lost their lives because of it. Sadly, there are people even in our day who suffer death because of their Christian faith.

In Time of Trouble

We have explored the meaning of that big word, "Regeneration," or as Jesus told Nicodemus, "You must be born from above" - a new kind of birth. Then we asked the question, "How Can I Be Sure I Am a Christian?" Last Sunday we dealt with the probing issue of whether or not what we profess carries over from Sunday to Monday. Today the scriptural basis for the sermon is Ephesians 2, verses 8 and 9, which makes very plain how we are made right with God. Join us again as we look at this very important matter. As we think about the subject for today, looking back at this past Christmas, I want ask two questions: What did you GET for Christmas? The second question is "What did you GIVE someone for Christmas?" We often think of gifts we have received, but what about what we have given? Jesus said that it is more blessed to give than to receive, and so as we look back now for a few days, we are thinking this morning about Christmas gifts. The Holy Child of Bethlehem

For the past two Sundays, we have been thinking about two people who were very important parts of the Christmas story: Mary, the mother of Jesus, and Joseph, the earthly father. Today our subject is "The Holy Child of Bethlehem" and this is the central person in the entire story. Our scriptural basis for today is Luke, chapter 2. Let's look at the background of some of the people mentioned at the first of this chapter and see how God worked to bring to pass, not only the miraculous birth, but also how God can work a miracle of "new birth" in our lives. Truly, "It is no secret what God can do."

Faith That Faces Trouble

However, today we are going to extend that subject by one more Sunday, as our topic this morning is "Faith That Faces Trouble." Last Sunday, we recalled the words of The Apostle Paul in his letter to the Ephesians, "Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.." God's servant, David, from the Old Testament put it this way: "For thou hast been a shelter for me, a strong tower from the enemy." When trouble comes our way, we all need that "strong tower" - a place to go. How wonderful it is to know that our loving heavenly Father provides that for us by giving us a sustaining faith when we face trouble!

Faith That Withstands

Did you know that God has left you a great inheritance, just waiting for you to claim it? And that's what we're thinking about on this Father's Day Sunday.

Ride the Wild Horses

Here is it the month of June already. When I was a seminary student in Louisville, KY many years ago, we used to look forward to the first Saturday in May for the Kentucky Derby. I never actually got to see a Derby, but that didn't keep me from appreciating all those magnificent three-year-old horses and the way they were trained for this "run for the roses."

The title of today's sermon is "Ride the Wild Horses." Well, the sermon is not about those horses, which are anything but wild, but if you'll stay with us for a few minutes, we'll look at a Bible verse which mentions horses, and we will see how this applies to our spiritual life as well.

Finding Life's Highest Happiness

We welcome you this morning to our Sunday worship service from Ocean Lakes Family Campground in Myrtle Beach, SC.

In just a few more days we will be in the month of June - - that month which is traditionally the month of brides, although people do get married in all the other months as well. The sermon today is entitled, "Finding Life's Highest Happiness." For those anticipating marriage, this may be exactly what they are looking forward to - - a life filled with marital bliss. One young person who had been married for only a short time came to realize that a terrible mistake had been made in getting married.

That person said, 'I didn't know what happiness was until I got married - - and then it was too late!" Well, that's a rather sad commentary on how to find life's highest happiness! Surely there is a better way. We are thinking about that better way this morning, and we are glad to have you join us from Ocean Lakes Family Campground.

A Drama of the Highway

Here we are in the middle of May, and the crowds are already beginning to come to the beach for summer vacations. Locals express their feelings about this influx with mixed emotions - - happy to see friends they haven't seen for a while, merchants getting more revenue - - but also dislike of the number of cars everywhere. Road rage on the highways does happen although we hate to hear about it.

Today we are thinking together about "A Drama of the Highway," and the Bible text for our thinking is Luke 10:25-37. Let's look once again at this account of what happened on a highway hundreds of years ago.

Pointers from a Prisoner

Young preachers who are in school, intending to make their life's work that of Christian ministry, are encouraged to take a course called "homiletics." This is a class on the preparation and delivery of sermons. One of the things taught is that a good sermon should have a "catchy" title - - one that will get the attention of the congregation immediately. Well, today's sermon has a rather strange and unlikely title. It is "Pointers From a

Prisoner."

Christmas and birthdays are two days when we like to think about getting and giving gifts to others. Of course, there other special occasions when gifts are appropriate, such as graduations, weddings, anniversaries, and other such happy times.

Today we are thinking about a very special gift which God has given to each of us. Certainly, the gift of salvation, of God's daily help in our lives, of His comfort in difficult days - - all these are special ways in which He blesses us. But this morning we are thinking about a gift which God offers to everyone of us - "The Gift of Prayer."

Who Is In Your Balcony?

You may not know them by name, but they are there, just the same. Our scriptural basis for the message today is the entire 11th chapter of Hebrews, and continuing on into chapter 12, verse 1.

A Personal Encounter with God

How Do You Face the New Year?

On this first Sunday in the new year, I will begin the message by asking a very personal question. The question is "How do you face the new year?" Many of us would have to admit that we cannot explain much of what has happened in our past. The present is even more difficult to understand. But when we think about the future, we all would agree that we cannot foresee what's ahead for any of us. However, the Bible gives us some excellent guidelines at this point. The scriptural reference for today is Luke 15:11-32 -- a familiar story. This year holds some unexpected blessings, and, of course, some trials that we couldn't anticipate. A Moving Christmas Story

Today is the one day in the year - and indeed in several years - when we do not have a regular worship service as such. Our founder, Mr. Nelson Jackson, made the decision many years before he went to Heaven in 2010 that when Christmas falls on a Sunday, we would suspend our service here at Ocean Lakes, since most folks will be elsewhere with family or may prefer to attend a local church for a special Christmas music program. However, I want to share with you for just a few minutes a Christmas story which touched my heart. Maybe it will touch yours also and make this day a very special one for you. Last Sunday we began our Advent season by thinking together about "The Other Innkeeper." This was the man in Jesus' parable of The Good Samaritan - the person who operated the inn to which the Samaritan took the man he found wounded, nearly dead, beside the road. Today we will look at another person who is truly a large part of the Christmas story, but he is not someone whom we would call our hero. His name is Herod, who tried to eliminate anyone who might take his throne from him. How many people in our day, like Herod, refuse to crown Jesus as king? The Other Inkeeper

This last Sunday in November is considered by many churches as the beginning of the Advent Season - a time when we try to prepare our hearts for a meaningful observance of the birth of our Savior Jesus. This morning we are going to take a somewhat different approach to the Advent Season, as we think together -not of the Innkeeper in Bethlehem, who is so often scorned by not letting Mary and Joseph in. Our subject today is "The Other Innkeeper." Who is that, you ask. The answer is found in Luke's gospel, chapter 10 verses 25-37. Our prayer is that this may be a meaningful beginning of the Advent Season for us all. Thank you for worshipping with us.

The Goodness of God

Thanksgiving Day is only a few days away. What do you have this year for which you are truly thankful? Well, when we stop to think about it, there is no way in which we can "count our blessings;" they are far too numerous. Yes, we all have troubles and hardships. Some people would have an easier time counting their burdens than their blessings. But today we are going to be looking at one reason why we ALL should be thankful. It is found in our Biblical text for today, Psalm 107:8 - "O that men would praise the LORD for His goodness, and for His Wonderful works to the children of men." In the Old Testament book of Numbers we find a statement which has often been used as a prayer for people who are about to end their earthly life. It is found in Numbers 23, verse 10: "Let me die the death of the righteous..." These words were spoken by a man named Balaam, who was a rather strange individual, as we shall see today. Was his prayer answered? Well, not exactly; in fact, not at all. In the 4th chapter of John's gospel, we have the story of Jesus and a woman who had an interesting conversation together. During that conversation, the woman referred to a well where they had met. It was a well that was dug by her ancestor, Jacob. This man was a person who was held in high esteem, and as she talked with Jesus, she asked him, "Do you think you're greater than Jacob our ancestor?" Well, there's a lot more to this story, and this is what we're going to be thinking about in today's sermon - something that happened hundreds of years before Jesus and this woman talked. Students who study in a seminary and take a course called "homiletics" (which basically means how to prepare and deliver a sermon) are told that the title of the sermon should be something which catches the attention of the worshippers and makes them eager to hear what the preacher is going to say about the subject. Well, today's sermon title probably violates that teaching, as we are thinking today on the subject, "The Holiness of God." Not a very exciting subject, right? Well, what is meant by the word "holiness?" Maybe there's more to it than many think. Hang in there with us, and just maybe God has a pleasant surprise for us today as we think about His holiness. Like the people of old, music has been a means through which God speaks to our hearts, not just our heads.
