Indian Space History Memory Monologues - Y S Rajan

Y. S. Rajan is a physicist by training. He has made key contributions to space research, technology and applications since 1964 and continues to be an expert on space matters. As scientific secretary, Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), he was responsible for a combination of scientific, technical, administrative, planning, policy and international cooperation matters from 1976 to 1988. Since then, he has held various other positions of responsibility related to science and technology, and academia. He was vice-chancellor, Punjab Technology University from 2002-04. Rajan has written on a variety of subjects, including science, technology, business, youth, leadership, social and ethical issues, and several poetry books in Tamil and English. He co-wrote the books India 2020 and The Scientific Indian with A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Rajan is currently Dr Vikram Sarabhai Distinguished Professor at ISRO Headquarters in Bangalore.

This is a project by Spaceport SARABHAI (S2) to capture anecdotes of people who have contributed to the development of India's space program. S2 is India’s 1st dedicated Space think tank that aspires to be global, collaborative, and inclusive. More about S2 - http://www.spaceportsarabhai.org/

Dr Mukund Rao has served ISRO in shaping the Indian Remote Sensing and National Natural Resources Management System (NNRMS) programme and has led development of number of EO/GIS applications for national developmental sectors – Natural Resources Information System (NRIS), National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI), National Urban Information System (NUIS) and National GIS. He has led defining national policies for EO and for National GIS.

Later, Dr. Rao has led GIS industry to develop a variety of enterprise GIS solutions and image applications for projects in USA, Singapore, Middle-East, Japan and India. He was instrumental in the design and implementation of Delhi state SDI, India's NSDI metadata portal and many other unique applications.

Indian Space History Memory Monologues - Vasudevan Gnana Gandhi

Vasudevan Gnana Gandhi is the pioneer of cryogenic rocket science in India. A graduate in Mechanical Engineering from the Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai, Gandhi started his career by joining the Indian Space Research Organization in 1968 and held many positions such as Project Director and Programme Director at ISRO. His contributions are reported behind the development of booster liquid stages of Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle and the uprating of VIKAS engine.

He was instrumental in the technology acquisition of Vikas engine from France during 1976 to 1979 and was responsible for the Cryogenic technology acquisition from Russia in 1993. He has made the pioneering efforts in Cryo rocketry in India. Under his overall leadership and guidance, Cryogenic upper stage engine has been developed and successfully tested demonstrating this most complicated technology. He is involved in the realization of Hydrogen bus with TATA motors.

He now serves as Sr. Vice President - Propulsion at Indian rocket startup, Skyroot Aerospace.

Indian Space History Memory Monologues - Dr George Joseph

George Joseph started his research career in 1962 at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Bombay, where he was involved in the study of cosmic rays. Based on his research work at the Tata Institute he was awarded a PhD degree by the Bombay University. A novel detector system designed by him was flown on the first Indian satellite Aryabhata (satellite) to detect solar neutrons.

In 1973, George was invited to join the Space Applications Centre, Ahmedabad-one of the centers of the Indian Space Research Organisation, and initiated the development of remote sensing technology particularly sensors of various types. His first office was the kitchen at the rented house which was the first premises of the Space Applications Centre. He has been the guiding force in the design and development of all the earth observation cameras on board Indian Remote Sensing Satellite and INSAT. He served the ISRO in various capacities including director of its Space Applications Centre and took keen interest and initiative to ensure the fruits of space technology reach common man. One of his contributions is the study report on Indian Mission to the Moon in the capacity as chairman of the Lunar Mission Study Task Force.

He served as Scientific Secretary who is responsible at ISRO's Head Quarters for international cooperation, budget and human resources development, Space Policy and Public Outreach of Indian Space Programme. Reported to chairman, ISRO. Also served as Member-Secretary to ISRO Council, which is responsible for ISRO's policy and program guidance.

He went on to become Managing Director of Antrix Corporation Limited.

Indian Space History Memory Monologues - Dr V K Dadhwal

Dr V K Dadhwal is known for his contribution to the development of remote sensing applications in agriculture, including crop forecasting and irrigation management. Dadhwal also served as the Director, National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), Hyderabad, Dean, Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, a unit under Department of Space and Director of Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram.

He was associated with major achievements at NRSC in the area of earth observation applications including National Geospatial Portal BHUVAN, National Database for Emergency Management (NDEM), National Information System for Climate and Environmental Studies (NICES), Space-based Inputs for Sustainable Development & Planning (SISDP), Water Resource Information System (WRIS), Disaster Management Support Program, etc and in satellite data, acquisition and processing including realization of IMGEOS and ground station at Antarctica. He was responsible for strengthening field based and quantitative application and EDUSAT based certificate program in field of remote sensing. His scientific contributions include as Project Director, National Carbon Project (NCP, 2007-2016) in biogeochemistry of Carbon and in as diverse EO applications areas as agriculture, crop simulation models, forestry, geo-hazards, geo-informatics, hydrology, land cover/ land use, land surface processes, meteorology and oceanography and has more than 270 peer reviewed papers as a co-author. His early studies on crop discrimination, mapping, crop yield modelling was major contributor ISRO program on agriculture forecasting (1986-2004) and to final acceptance and establishment of a national centre by Ministry of Agriculture in 2012. He has co-guided 10 PhD students.

He has extensive international cooperation experience, as member/leader of Indian delegation to UN Committee of Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNCOPUOS), Vienna (2013, 2014, 2015), to Science & Technology sub-committee of UNCOPUOS, Vienna (2013-2015) and was Chair of UN COPUOS S&T subcommittee in 2016. He has been member/co-chair of Indian delegation in international cooperation meetings with US, Japan, ESA and China.

His scientific program management experience includes Co-Chair, National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) of DST (2011-2016), Governing Body/Council of Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS, 2011-2016) and many State Remote Sensing Centre as well as in Scientific/Research Advisory Committees of National Atmospheric Research Laboratory (NARL), Gadanki, National Rice Research Institute (NRRI), Cuttack, 2014-2017, Space Physics Laboratory(SPL), VSSC, etc. He also served as ISRO representative to the Board of Antrix Corporation.

Chandra spent more than 20 years working at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). His work at ISRO covered all parts of the programme - satellite, rockets as well as the applications of space technology especially remote sensing. He was also involved with activities related to international co-operation and has represented and led Indian delegations to the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.

His research interests include technology and competitive advantage, national technology priorities and national technology policy, studies on innovation, telecommunications in the Indian context, national innovation systems, modelling complex systems and national security issues. His recent work includes a study of sensitive installations using open source satellite imagery. He has also been involved with other members of the group on a micro-level comparative case study of Chinese capabilities in one domain of technology related to the development of turbo-fan aircraft engine technology.

Dr. V.S. Hegde, born in 1952, has a Post Graduate Degree in Applied Geology and Doctorate Degree in Environmental Science. He has been with Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) since 1975, contributing in the areas of Aerial Remote Sensing, Earth Observation, Remote Sensing & Satellite Communication Applications, Disaster Mitigation, Societal Applications, International Cooperation and Space Commerce.

Previously, Hegde has held many key positions in ISRO, such as Scientific Secretary, ISRO; Director, Earth Observations System; Member-Secretary of Planning Committee on National Natural Resources Management System (NNRMS); Programme Director, Disaster Management Support; Programme Coordinator, Village Resource Centres; Project Director, Integrated Mission for Sustainable Development. During 1989-1991, he was Founder-Director of Karnataka State Remote Sensing Centre, a vital organ of NNRMS. He was also Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Antrix Corporation Limited (Antrix).

Hegde’s important contributions to the programmes and activities of ISRO, also of much relevance to national development, include: exploration of groundwater to provide drinking water in villages; landslide hazard zonation in the Himalayas; developing locale-specific integrated action plans at watershed level for management of land and water resources; and environment impact assessment for setting up polluting industries & developmental projects. He has played pivotal roles in implementing the space-based programme for disaster management; and conceptualising & realising the network of Village Resource Centres to take the benefits of space technology to the doorsteps of common man. His contributions in evolving the Remote Sensing Data Policy-2011; and the long-term strategy & plan for Indian Earth Observations System and its utilisation have been significant. He has played an equally pro-active and productive role in building ISRO’s international relations and programme management as Scientific Secretary.

Drawing parallels between European and Indian support system for NewSpace startups

Lucie Campagnolo was a project manager at MEDES, the Institute for Space Medicine and Physiology. Prior to this, Lucie was payload ops engineer at CNES where she worked as an Experimental Manager to help scientists to prepare and conduct a broad range of experiments in microgravity, be it aboard the International Space Station, Airbus A300 Zero-G, or Ground Analogs. Experiences from UNispace Nanosatellite Assembly & Training (UNNATI) by ISRO

From 15 October to 15 December 2019, two of NiAT’s very own staff went to Bangalore, India, to take part in the UNNATI Batch 2 course. They were Siti Nuraazzah PDHA Aziz, Deputy CEO, and Wong Teck Sion, Head of Technical and Operations. It was endorsed by the Ministry of Transport and Info-Communications.

The UNNATI course is a capacity building programme offered by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to other United Nations member states, as part of their UNISpace initiative in the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) agenda.

A total of 30 professionals from 16 countries completed the course. Of the 30 participants, 11 were from their nation’s space and science agencies, 8 were air force officers, 5 were university lecturers, 4 were from satellite communications companies, and 2 were from civil aviation authorities. The diversity in the participants presented a unique opportunity to learn from each other as each country was at a different stage in their space initiatives and spearheaded by different organisations. Early days of ISRO as told by Project Director for APPLE

Vasagam joined India's space program in 1965 while it was still Indian National Committee for Space Research. While at ISRO, he worked across functions including launch, planning and evaluation group, control systems, satellite center and advanced technology and planning. He was the Project Director for India's first indigenous geostationary communication satellite project, APPLE during 1977–1983. In 1994, he took over as the Director, Directorate of Advanced Technology and Planning, ISRO Headquarters, Bangalore.

Evolution of solid propellants for rocketry in India

Prof Rajaram Nagappa has specialised in aerospace propulsion and has worked extensively in the design and development of solid propellant rockets. His interests are in missile technology and space weaponisation. He has served in the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, ISRO as its Associate Director, and later was Pandalai Memorial Chair Professor at Anna University, Chennai. He has also taught at Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Israel. He is a recipient of the Astronautical Society of India Award, Distinguished Alumnus Award of the Madras Institute of Technology, DRDO’s Agni Award for Excellence in Self Reliance, Certificate of Appreciation of the International Astronautical Federation and the Honorary Fellowship of the High Energy Materials Society of India.

Lt. Gen. (Retd) Prakash Menon is the Director of the Strategic Studies Programme. He is also Professor Emeritus at Trans Disciplinary University (TDU), Bangalore and Adjunct Professor, National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bangalore.

Lt Gen Menon joined the Indian Army in 1972. He has extensive operational experience in commanding counter-insurgency operations in Central, North and South Kashmir. He was the Major General Staff of the army’s Northern Command responsible for operations in J&K and the Commandant of the National Defence College, New Delhi. After his retirement in 2011, he continued in government as the Military Advisor and Secretary to Government of India and from 2015 as Officer on Special Duty in the National Security Council Secretariat.

Since the 1970s, China has launched increasingly complicated military, robotic, and human missions into space, making China a major spacefaring nation. Until recently, however, China has not had a commercial space sector in which firms vie to sell space products and services to state and private customers domestically and internationally. Using original documents and first-hand Chinese-language interviews with Chinese companies and China’s industry experts, this report titled 'Evaluation of China's Commercial Space Sector' provides a review of the current landscape of China’s nascent but growing commercial space sector.

India’s forgotten rocket pioneer

Gurbir Singh is a UK based space writer. His professional background is in the IT sector as a Senior Cyber Security Consultant for a large IT company. He studied science and computing and holds a science and an arts degree. Once keen on aviation, he has a private pilot’s licence for the UK, USA and Australia. He was one of 13,000 unsuccessful applicants responding to the 1989 advert in the UK “Astronaut wanted. No experience necessary” to become the first British astronaut, for which Helen Sharman was eventually selected and flew on the Soviet space station MIR in 1991

In 2011, Gurbir published his first book, Yuri Gagarin in London and Manchester. The book traces the visit of the world’s first spaceman’s visit to England with first-hand accounts from the people who saw and met him. His second book, The Indian Space Programme published in October 2017, is a detailed (600+pages) and illustrated account of India’s space programme, its current capabilities, and achievements and future ambitions.

His new book “Stephen H Smith” India’s forgotten Rocket Mail Pioneer will be available from March 2019.

Pixxel is building a constellation of earth-imaging small satellites to provide an entirely new kind of dataset that today’s satellites aren’t capable of. The planned constellation of satellites will provide global coverage every 24 hours enabling organisations around the globe to detect, monitor and predict global phenomena in near real time.

An institutional investor's thesis for funding NewSpace in India

Mahesh Murthy is among India’s best-known and most-successful investors. He has twice been named “India’s Best VC of the Year”, an award voted on by investors in VC funds. Mahesh runs Exseed, Asia’s only fund focused on space companies. Exseed believes in the ‘new space’ thesis, and has already earmarked a dozen investments including Satellize (earlier known as Exseed Space) – India’s first private company in space, with successful launches on SpaceX and ISRO; GroundCloud – an upcoming offering of ground stations-as-a-service and HF Signals – a digital radio communications firm.

Rakesh Sasibhushan joined ISRO during 1984 in the area of Launch Vehicle manufacturing and currently is the Chairman & Managing Director of ANTRIX Corporation, which is the commercial arm of ISRO. Prior to this assignment, from 2015 to 2016 he was the Director of ISRO’s Propulsion Complex, at Mahendragiri, Tamilnadu, and from 2011 to 2015 he was the Dy. Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre heading the Composites Entity at the Vattiyoorkavu Campus of VSSC. Dr. Abhijeet Borkar did undergraduate education from Fergusson College, Pune and masters in physics from the University of Pune and subsequently did his PhD at the International Max Planck Research School at Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn, Germany. He is currently working as a post-doctorate researcher at the Astronomy Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences.

India's approach to human spaceflight with Rakesh Sharma

In 1970 Sharma joined the Indian Air Force as a pilot. He flew 21 combat missions in a MiG-21 in the Bangladesh war of 1971. In 1982 he was selected as a cosmonaut for a joint Soviet-Indian spaceflight. On April 3, 1984, he flew on board Soyuz T-11 with two Soviet cosmonauts to the space station Salyut 7. There Sharma performed experiments that included photography of India from space and exercises to study the effects of yoga on the body during weightlessness.
