The God Who Forms a People | Sermon

In this message, we explore how God has always been at work forming a people for Himself—from the Old Covenant to its fulfillment in Christ.

Looking at 1 Corinthians 10:11, we see how the events of the Old Testament serve as types—blueprints—that point forward to their ultimate fulfillment, or antitypes, in Jesus. From the rejected stone in Psalm 118 to Christ as the cornerstone, Scripture reveals a consistent plan of redemption.

Through the story of Israel in Exodus 19, we are reminded that God delivers His people not just to rescue them, but to bring them into relationship—calling them a “kingdom of priests and a holy nation.” This calling reflects both authority and responsibility: to live set apart, to serve others, and to stand in the gap as intercessors.

The Ten Commandments reveal God’s holy standard, yet also show humanity’s inability to fully keep the law. This points us forward to the promise of a new covenant in Jeremiah 31—a covenant where God writes His law on our hearts.

Jesus did not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it (Matthew 5:17). As our High Priest (Hebrews 8), He establishes a better covenant based on better promises. Through Him, we are not only forgiven, but transformed.

In Christ, we become new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17). The new covenant is not just external instruction, but internal transformation—God working within us to shape us into His people.

In the cultural world of Jesus’ listeners, the most glaring absence in the story of the prodigal is not the missing son, it is the missing pursuit of the older brother. In a patriarchal household, the father did not chase shame. He bore it, but he did not run after it.
That responsibility belonged to the eldest son. The older brother was meant to leave the house, seek out his sibling, restore the family’s honor, and mediate reconciliation. That was his role. That was his duty.

”Kingship” - A God-ordained position of leadership, authority, and servanthood under God himself.

"Anointing" - The act of applying oil to someone or something, symbolizing consecration, sanctification, or divine empowerment.

A Better Prophet: Jeremiah was a type of Christ in that he underwent a death and resurrection when he was thrown into a pit and brought out. He was a Prophet of sorrow and acquainted with grief. Jesus is the Man of Sorrows and acquainted with grief who was thrown into the pit of God’s wrath and then brought out in the resurrection. As was true of Joseph and Isaiah before Him, the principle of sufferings and glory surround the stories of this prophet.

Welcome to Week 8 of our Life Blood series! 🙌

Today’s message takes a powerful turn—from the vertical (what we believe about God) to the horizontal (how we live with one another). We’re digging into the line from the Apostles’ Creed: “I believe in the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints.”

What does that actually mean?
Why does belonging matter just as much as believing?
And how do we live out the love of Jesus—not just in theory, but through deep, honest, Spirit-filled community?

In Matthew 22, Jesus said the greatest commandment is to love God—and then added: “The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.”
But in Luke 10, He flips the script and shows us: the real question isn’t “Who is my neighbor?”—it’s “Will I be one?”

Because following Jesus was never meant to be a solo act.
We were made in the image of a relational God—formed for community, called to connection, and invited to build something sacred together.

Luke 24:1-9 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb, taking the spices that they had prepared. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in, they did not find the body. While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men in dazzling clothes stood beside them. The women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinners, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.” Then they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb, they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest.

Why does the resurrection matter to us?
What benefits are ours through a once-dead-but-now-alive Lord?

Christ’s resurrection means the death of Jesus was enough.
1 Corinthians 15:17 If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins.

• If Jesus did not rise from the dead, then death has power over Him and defeated Him.

• If death has power over Jesus, He is not God.

• If Jesus is not God, He cannot offer a complete sacrifice for sins.

• If Jesus cannot offer a complete sacrifice for sins, our sins are not completely paid for before God.

• If my sins are not completely paid for before God, then I am still in my sins.

• Therefore, if Jesus is not risen, He is unable to save.

2. Christ’s resurrection gives us power for new life—right now.

Romans 6:5-11 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. For whoever has died is freed from sin. But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

We are not just practicing the way of Jesus, but we are also participating in His death and resurrection.

Romans 8:11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit that dwells in you.

3. Christ’s resurrection guarantees our future resurrection.
He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

Luke 24:50-51 … and, lifting up his hands, he blessed them. While he was blessing them, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven.Luke 24:52 And they worshiped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple blessing God.
The GREAT JOY of the Ascension:

1. Jesus is not absent from us for even a moment.

John 16:7 It is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send Him to you.

2. The ascension guarantees that our bodies will be in heaven.

Christ’s flesh in heaven is the pledge that ours will be there too.

Colossians 3:1–3 says So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

3. We have an advocate & intercessor in heaven

The cross was His sacrifice.
The resurrection was His victory.
The ascension is His ongoing ministry.Jesus, Our Only High Priest. (Heb. 7:27; 9:12, 25–26; 10:10–18).
Jesus died in our place, and He lives to pray for us.

1 John 2:1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous;

The Trinity

    5.    The Father is not the Son.
    6.    The Son is not the Holy Spirit.
    7.    The Holy Spirit is not the Father.

There are three persons in the one true and living God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. They are the same in essence, equal in power and glory.

1. There is only one God. (Deut 6:4, Isa 43:10, Mark 12:29)

2. The Father, Son, and Spirit are distinct persons. (Luke 3:22)

3. Each person is fully God. (1 Cor 8:6, 1 Pet 1:3, John 1:1, Titus 2:13, Heb 1:8, Acts 5:3-4)I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth

We are children of God, not by right of human birth but by the miracle of divine adoption. 

John 1:12-13 But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God.

If you want to judge how well a person understands Christianity, find out how much he makes of the thought of being God’s child, and having God as his Father. If this is not the thought that prompts and controls his worship and prayers and his whole outlook on life, it means that he does not understand Christianity very well at all. For everything that Christ taught, everything that makes the New Testament new, and better than the Old, everything that is distinctively Christian as opposed to merely Jewish, is summed up in the knowledge of the Fatherhood of God. “Father” is the Christian name for God. – J.I. 2 Corinthians 5:19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them.  

Romans 8:15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”

Behold, ponder, contemplate—be astonished, smitten and speechless “at the great love the Father has lavished on us. (1 John 3:1)

How can you apply the truth that God is your Father?
1. Pray like a child, not a performer.
2. Love the family you’ve been adopted into.
3. Start your day with the Trinity.

1. JESUS IS THE CHRIST

“Christ”= Anointed One.

“Christ” - Greek word Christos - anointed by God as King

2. JESUS IS THE SON OF GOD

You see Jesus didn’t need that title to make Him something He wasn’t. He didn’t need to be upgraded—He already was God. 

Jesus is not God like, He is God.

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and  the Word was God.

Colossians 1:15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.

God came near.

John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Jesus is God—and He moved toward us.

3. JESUS IS LORD 

If Jesus is Lord, His message demands more than agreement—it commands allegiance. 

Mathew 16:17 “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. Mathew 16:18 and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

The church doesn’t get built on a vague belief in God.

If He’s the Christ—then He’s the King.
If He’s the Son—then He’s divine.
And if He’s both of those… then He must be Lord!

A — Alignment

He gets to define the reality of how I live my life.

It’s whole-life realignment under His Lordship. 

Real freedom doesn’t come from the illusion of you having control—it comes from trusting the One who’s actually in control.

B — Belief
Everyone on the planet believes something about Jesus.

Jesus didn’t present Himself as one option among many—He made it clear: He is the way.

It’s not, “What do people say?” But, “Who do you say I am?” 

C — Community

To belong to Christ is to belong to His Body… To be united with Him is to be united with His Church.

Romans 12:5 So in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.

We don’t build walls to keep the world out—we break them down to bring the Gospel in. 

D — Direction

He’s not just our example. He’s our compass. He doesn’t just inspire us—He directs us.

John 10:10 I have come that you might have life—and have it to the full. 

You’re not good enough to save yourself, and you’re not too far gone for God to save you.

You Need Friends
