Natural Products Resource Center (NPRC) is separating fact from fiction for natural products. Seasoned podcast host, Dr. Hillary Blackburn, recognized the lack of education for healthcare professionals on natural products such as medical cannabis. As a pharmacist, she receives questions about cannabis and other supplements on a regular basis. This podcast is not intended to be medical advice, but is for healthcare professionals or others interested in learning more about the emerging field of natural products as medicine.

In this episode, we talk with Dr. Rachna Patel who has been in the field of Medical Cannabinoids since 2012, after spending years training as an Emergency Medicine doctor. She completed her undergraduate studies at Northwestern University (IL) and earned her medical degree from Touro University (CA). In 2014, she opened her own practice so that she could offer people care they otherwise wouldn’t have access to. In 2019, she wrote The CBD Oil Solution, published by Penguin Random House and in 2020, Dr. Patel became the CEO of her own CBD company, Doc Patels. Dr. Patel’s knowledge of CBD Oil has made her an asset in the specialty. She has been interviewed on over 200 podcasts, has taken the stage internationally to spread awareness, has been featured in articles for Lifehacker and MindBodyGreen and has appeared on major news networks such as NBC.

Topics/main points:

In this episode, we have guest, Pam Tarlow, PharmD who has been a practicing pharmacist since graduating from the School of Pharmacy at University of Southern California (USC) in 1981. Her practice has evolved over the years to include working closely with providers and patients on the safe, appropriate, and effective use of pharmaceuticals, botanicals, homeopathic, nutritional agents and therapeutic essential oils. She currently practices clinical integrative pharmacy at a unique independent pharmacy and as part of the team at an Integrative Medical Health Group. She is a lecturer and innovative experiential educator for many pharmacy schools, medical residents, and doctorate acupuncture programs. She is the Director of the inaugural PGY1 Integrative Health Pharmacy Residency. Pam is a faculty member and co-chair in Healthy Aging and Integrative Medicine at Yo San University Doctorate in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Program. two CE programs on homeopathic medicines and involved in numerous pharmacy professional associations.

In this episode, we cover the following questions:
1. Your career evolution as an integrative pharmacist as the field expands
2. Main areas of integrative pharmacy specialty and interest: regulation, hormone balance, bioactive compounds, mood support, therapeutic essential oils, and skillful communication
3. Framework and importance of performing drug/herb/nutrient/condition interactions checks.
4. Value of mentoring (as a mentor and as a mentee)
5. Staying motivated, current, authentic and helpful (including meditation)
6. What does integrative medicine mean to you?
7. What is some final advice that you would tell pharmacists about why and how to stay up to date or get into this area of practice?

Welcome to the Natural Products Resource Center podcast. We’re curating credible information about natural products brought to you by a clinician, pharmacist Hillary Blackburn. With the increase in the use of natural products such as cannabis, dietary supplements, herbs, and essential oils over the past few years, the purpose of this podcast is to bring expert information to our audience of healthcare professionals and even the public who want to learn more. This podcast is not intended to be for direct medical advice, please refer to your doctor, pharmacist or other healthcare professional for specifics related to your own health.
Guests for NPRC will include a qualified group of clinical and business leaders, who have been involved in the cannabis industry and natural products space. Together, they bring a diverse perspective and set of experiences to the conversation about the changes involved with natural products, particularly the ever changing medical cannabis environment.
NPRC is produced by pharmacist, Hillary Blackburn - founder of the Natural Products Resource Center who recognized a need to provide more education on these topics. As a seasoned podcast host - also of the Talk to Your Pharmacist podcast specifically for the pharmacy industry, I wanted to use the podcasting platform to shape the natural products conversation and educate the entire healthcare profession about medical cannabis.
We hope you’ll enjoy the upcoming episodes of this podcast and resources through Natural Products Resource Center.
