Join us for an enlightening conversation with our insightful guest, Miriam Hanson, as we unpack the multifaceted concept of mindfulness. We explore the intriguing paradox of being "mindful," a state that simultaneously suggests fullness and emptiness of the mind. Our discussion traverses cultural roots and the modern adaptation of mindfulness, particularly through Jon Kabat-Zinn's mindfulness-based stress reduction approach.

Through personal stories, including the transformative experience of living on an island without modern technology, we highlight the benefits of focusing on a single experience and challenge the societal norm of multitasking. Disconnecting from distractions like phones and headphones, we discover how single-tasking can enrich our senses, expand our perception of time, and deepen our connection to the world around us. This dialogue encourages embracing mindfulness as a means to slow down and savor the beauty of the present moment.

Our conversation takes a thoughtful turn as we examine the intertwining paths of mindfulness and yoga, drawing insights from the ancient wisdom of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. With guidance from Miriam, we explore how these practices enhance personal growth and community life, offering a journey of self-discovery that aligns with natural rhythms and cosmic energies. Reflecting on the balance between practice and letting go, we celebrate yoga as a lifelong pursuit that enriches our engagement with the world and ourselves.

Guest bio: Miriam Hanson Rogotzke (E-RYT 500) started her Yoga Journey 25 years ago. Miriam is first and foremost a student, continuously learning and unlearning in her understanding of living sincerely in the great school of life. In her mission to share the teachings of yoga with Every Body, Miriam aspires to offer the healing practices of yoga to all who are drawn to it.
Growing up in a house filled with the vibrant sounds of the Beatles and jazz legends like Duke Ellington, music became a lifelong companion and teacher. On this episode of Mindfulness Monday, I sit down with Pete, a cherished musician from our community, as we explore how those early musical experiences shaped his journey. From strumming a guitar in high school bands to the soulful reunion shows that bring old friends together, Pete's story is a testament to the power of music to connect us to people and moments that shape our lives. We reminisce about unforgettable concerts and the friendships forged in the harmonies of life's soundtrack, revealing music's role as a universal thread in our shared human experience.

We also journey into the world of mindfulness, spirituality, and the profound beauty of nature. He shares personal reflections on Zen meditation, Stoic wisdom, and the spiritual insights gleaned from sacred texts, which have deepened my connection to the world around me. Our conversation touches on the transformative power of gratitude, the healing process of forgiveness, and the simple magic found in everyday interactions. By choosing positivity and recognizing the interconnectedness of our communities, even the smallest acts can ripple outward, creating a more compassionate world. As we explore these themes, we invite you to reflect on your own journey and the small, meaningful victories that mindfulness can bring to your life.

Guest Bio: Pete was born and raised in Fargo ND where his initial music education and early performances occurred. He graduated from St. John's University in Collegeville MN where he was introduced to writings and teaching of various philosophical, spiritual and religious disciplines which led to a lifetime of study and practice of mindfulness.
On this week's episode, guest Zahir Orest, shares personal insights, highlighting the joy in being fully immersed in the moment and the cultural nuances that shape our self-perception. Zahir helps unpack a fascinating anecdote about the Dalai Lama's astonishment at the Western inclination towards self-criticism, contrasted with Tibetan perspectives that are much more forgiving. Our exploration is enriched with the metaphor of creating a trail in meditation, emphasizing how consistency and compassion can help ease the journey toward mindfulness.

Our discussion also touches on how historical teachings, such as those from Sufi traditions, can be beautifully woven into modern life to enrich our spiritual journeys. We advocate for approachable, short meditation practices, revealing how even one-minute sessions can significantly enhance mindfulness. The episode journeys through spiritual exploration, showcasing how diverse practices, from Zen macrobiotics to Sufism, can transform our experiences and foster community connections. Through shared spiritual practices, we discover the profound ripple effect that personal mindfulness can have on our broader interactions, reinforcing the idea that spirituality is best shared and can greatly influence our collective lives.

Guest Bio: Zahir Orest was born in London England to Ukrainian refugees from the genocidal devastation of Ukraine by the Russians and the Germans before and during World War II. Drawn deeply to spirituality, he wandered into many different houses of worship from African-American churches, Jewish synagogues, Roman Catholic and evangelical churches, etc. Many of his childhood friends were drawn to Islam through the Nation of Islam. Through his college years, he worked in various recording studios as an apprentice engineer. This also was influential as there was a deep cultural/artistic shift evolving in culture.

He began serious study in the Ruhaniat, which being a universal path, amplified my childhood tendencies of studying/exploring in various traditions. On his way to becoming a senior teacher in the Ruhaniat, he studied in various Sufi orders (including those more traditional Islamic-based), Tibetan Buddhism, Zen Buddhism, contemporary African-American Islam, Judiasm, yoga, and mystical Christianity. Pilgrimages included visiting holy sites of Sufis (Chistiyya & Inayyati Sufis) in India and extensive travels in Turkey meeting, praying and studying with Sufi orders there: Mevlevi (whirling dervishes), Qadiriyya (howling dervishes), Naqshibandiyya, Helveti-Jerrahi, etc.) Currently, Zahir is a somewhat retired as a traveling senior Sufi teacher, and hosts a weekly Zen-flavored meditation gathering 7 PM Wednesday evenings at Two Birds studio in Grand Marais.

Ever felt like traditional meditation just isn't your style? You’re not alone! Many people find the idea of sitting still, focusing solely on their breath, a bit intimidating. That's why this week I'm talking about moving meditations. Imagine incorporating mindfulness into your daily strolls or even a quick walk around your house, transforming these ordinary moments into profound practices of presence. With moving meditations, we let go of the need to be still and silent, and instead embrace the rhythm of our steps and the world around us.

Join me, as we break down the barriers to mindfulness and explore this dynamic form of meditation that invites motion and engagement with all your senses. We'll start by tuning into our breath, then awaken our awareness to the sounds, sights, and scents that surround us as we move. Whether you’re walking through a bustling city or taking a quiet path in nature, these practices offer a fresh perspective on meditation. Embrace this invitation to explore mindfulness in motion and discover how it can aid in your journey to a more mindful life.

Ever wondered how or even if, mindfulness can transform both advocacy work and personal growth? Together with my guest, Ed Heisler, a fellow advocate and mindfulness enthusiast, we unpack the critical role mindfulness plays in reducing harm and sustaining our work. Our candid discussion covers the evolving awareness of mindfulness across various fields, as well as the complex narratives surrounding family histories that hold both hurt and hope.

Join us as we journey through the paths of self-discovery, highlighting yoga and storytelling as powerful allies in healing. We reflect on the warmth and resilience found in small-town communities, cherishing the beauty of distinct seasons and the connections they cultivate. Personal anecdotes of finding joy in familiar places and the shared experiences of harsh winters and cozy cafes bring this conversation to life. Embrace the rhythm and resilience of community spirit and discover how mindfulness can bridge diverse beliefs and values, offering joy and connection in unexpected places.

Guest Bio: At the very core of his being, Ed is a storyteller and healer whose practice and teaching is rooted in curiosity, love, joyful learning with others, and his own journey with healing and spirit reconnection. With a background in violence prevention and peacemaking, Ed’s daily work focuses on nourishing individual and community connection to spirit, healing, and wholeness as a pathway to interdependent thriving for future generations–and ourselves. Ed (Koshin) Heisler was Ordained as a Rinzai Zen Priest in Anko-in, an Independent Branch Temple of Chozen-ji by Norma Ryuko Kaweloku Wong Roshi in 2022. He loves learning and sharing spirit and wholeness practices with others. Ed’s core practices include Zazen (meditation), Kado (flower arrangement), Ten Step Tai Ji, Okyo (Chanting), Shodo (Calligraphy), Reiki, and everyday storytelling that connects the depths of our wisdom, ancestors, and spirit.

After years of juggling the demands of nonprofit work and feeling disconnected from his own body, Seth discovered a transformative approach to mindfulness that changed everything. Join us in this episode of Mindfulness Monday as Seth shares his inspiring journey and insights gained as the director of the Damiano Center and a leader at the Svalja Studio in Duluth. He sheds light on the importance of providing aid with dignity and how mindfulness practices like Qigong and yoga have become essential tools in his work and personal life.

Together, we reflect on the challenges of integrating mindfulness into everyday life, especially when grappling with the chaos of responsibilities and personal hurdles. Drawing from my own experiences, I recall the initial struggle with meditation during my grad school days, and how learning to sit with my thoughts as an extrovert was a daunting yet rewarding task. Seth and I explore the value of embracing failure as a stepping stone for growth, using mindfulness to enhance self-awareness and navigate life's challenges with more grace and understanding.

This episode is a reminder of the deeply personal nature of mindfulness journeys and the importance of trusting one's intuition. We discuss pacing oneself when adopting new practices to avoid burnout, emphasizing the significance of not comparing oneself to others. By celebrating personal progress and recognizing that each path is unique, we encourage listeners to appreciate their individual journeys and the transformative power of mindful living. Tune in to discover how personalized mindfulness practices can lead to a more intentional and fulfilling life.

Guest Bio: Seth Currier, MA, RYT 200, Certified Qigong Practice Group Leader (he/him).
Join me on this enlightening episode of Mindfulness Monday as I sit down with Charles, an acupuncturist and herbalist from Grand Marais, Minnesota. Charles shares his journey of moving to this community and taking over the local acupuncture practice. He introduces us to the neoclassical style of acupuncture he practices, which emphasizes palpation and the interconnectedness of human and environmental factors. Charles reflects on his path to acupuncture, his background in human ecology, and his experiences with Qigong, offering insights into the profound impact of acupuncture on both practitioners and patients.

Listen in as we explore the complexities of working with other people's energy and bodies in acupuncture and bodywork. Charles discusses the challenges of distinguishing and separating personal energy from that of clients, sharing techniques for managing energy transference. We touch on the historical and philosophical aspects of acupuncture, including the significance of the Neijing Studies and the universal breath concept. Our conversation also delves into the emotional dimensions of health, the impact of seasonal changes on the body, and how recent unusual weather patterns have influenced current patterns of illness and allergies.

This episode also highlights the importance of community and mindfulness in fostering healing and introspection. We discuss how individual mindfulness and empathy can contribute to a larger cultural shift, creating safe spaces for healing. Additionally, Charles shares his experiences with mindfulness in parenting, emphasizing the importance of grace. Finally, we explore the interconnectedness of mindfulness, energy work, and the traditional Chinese medicine concept of the five elements, offering practical advice on finding balance and health. Tune in for a thought-provoking and heartwarming conversation that underscores the power of mindfulness and community support.

Guest Bio: Charles Bishop is an acupuncturist, husband, father, small business owner, and hopelessly captivated by everything life brings his way. He has studied beekeeping in New Zealand, Buddhism in Japan, Human Ecology in Mexico and Maine, and Acupuncture in Minnesota and Oregon. And at each place an unexpected lesson or direction arose. Whether he is learning career planning from an ex-con beekeeper or Qigong after school from his philosophy professor, there is no scarcity of teachers and the serendipity to connect with them.

Charles earned a BA in Human Ecology from College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine and holds a Master of Science in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from the American Academy of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (now the American Academy of Health and Wellness) in Roseville, Minnesota. He later continued his acupuncture studies with Korean Sa’am style under Dr. Toby Daily and most recently Neoclassical Acupuncture under the instruction of Dr. Slate Burris.

Living on the indescribably beautiful North Shore of Lake Superior, Charles is busy raising four young boys with his amazing wife Grace and running Artemisia Acupuncture & Apothecary, a general practice acupuncture clinic and herbal medicine shop.

He often stays up too late reading and occasionally sneaks out to kayak under moonlight.

On this week's Mindfulness Monday podcast I'm thrilled to sit down with Marcia Hyatt, an expert in leadership development and the voice behind the "Best of Ourselves" podcast. Together, we navigate the compelling intersection of mindfulness and leadership, unraveling how self-awareness and presence are not just buzzwords but essential tools for any effective leader. Listen in as Marcia shares her transition from leading teams to coaching executives, offering invaluable insights into how embracing our authentic selves can enhance our capacity to lead and inspire.

We unpack the idea that by cultivating patience and self-compassion, leaders can transform challenges into opportunities for growth. The journey toward authentic leadership is demystified as we discuss the importance of recognizing the stories we tell ourselves and distinguishing between reactive impulses and grounded decision-making. We wrap up with actionable advice for any leader or individual looking to weave mindfulness into their professional fabric, emphasizing that our magnificence starts from within. As we conclude this week's podcast, we reflect on the power of mindfulness in both our personal and professional lives, even amidst the busiest of schedules. Marcia offers a poignant reminder of how simple acts, like pausing for a deep breath or connecting with nature, can serve as portals to greater mindfulness.

Guest Bio: We are so much more than we know. Building our capacity to be present we become more self-aware. With this awareness we see choices that lead to a more generative and intentional life. Having worked with leaders (and herself) over the past several decades, guest Marcia Hyatt knows change is possible. She believes that we can move beyond our patterns to become increasingly more grounded and aware; to become leaders in our own lives and in the world. Marcia has experience working inside corporations, government, higher education, and non-profits. In 1991, she co-founded a leadership consulting firm, and in 1997, she co-founded a public Women's Leadership development program that is still operating today. In 2008, in collaboration with WTIP, she created a weekly radio feature, Best of Ourselves. She is certified by Power & Systems (systems thinking), the Deep Coaching Institute and International Coaching Federation (coaching), and the International Enneagram Association (enneagram professional).
Battling the relentless waves of stress and seeking equilibrium, my own odyssey with yoga has been nothing short of a revelation. This Mindfulness Monday, alongside Molly from Yoga North, we unfurl the narrative of yoga's power to anchor our lives in the present moment. We reveal the ways in which this ancient practice has been a sanctuary for us, offering a haven from the tumult of daily life and guiding us towards a state of profound balance and well-being. Molly, with her extensive experience, sheds light on the transformative journey from yoga student to passionate practitioner, and how it has reshaped our understanding of mental health.

We also tackle the broad spectrum of mindfulness and self-care practices that go beyond the confines of traditional meditation. From Sama Yoga's fluid movements to the therapeutic strokes of watercolor painting, we underscore the diversity of paths available for nurturing our well-being. We confront the myths that may deter us from embarking on this journey, emphasizing the importance of community and consistency in our self-care rituals. Drawing inspiration from the timeless wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita, we leave you with the empowering reminder that no step towards mindfulness is too small, and every effort paves the way to a life less burdened by sorrow.

Guest Bio: Molly McManus is a Yoga Therapist, Ayurvedic Health Counselor, and educator with a commitment to holistic well-being. Both guests stress the lifesaving potential of simple mindfulness exercises, advocating for their integration into everyday routines to prevent overwhelming goals and potential discouragement. Furthermore, we extend a heartfelt invitation to engage in crucial mental health conversations and to join forces with community initiatives aimed at fostering a supportive and age-friendly environment.

Guest Bios:

Andrea Orest lives outside of Grand Marais with 3 of her kids, her husband, and their dog. She is on the Great Expectations Charter School board and the Cook County Community Center Board, and actively participates in community events and volunteer opportunities. She works for Cook County Public Health as a Public Health Educator. Andrea’s hobbies include audiobooks, outdoor adventures, and spending time with her family.

Andrea Tofte resides in Tofte, MN, and works as a Public Health Educator for Cook County Public Health.
