Over the past number of years, Padraig Dunne has become one of the most recognisable faces on the Laois GAA scene as a highly-regarded referee in both hurling and football.
Since taking up the whistle in 2018, he rose up through the ranks quickly, refereeing Laois senior hurling finals in 2020, 2023 and 2024. He was also on the inter-county panel and refereed three big games in Croke Park, including last year's Christy Ring Cup final.
But at 47 - and with an inter-county retirement age of 50 - his prospects of climbing higher up on the national ladder were limited. He was also not enjoying at as much as he previously did so he has called time on his refereeing career.
He joins us to look back on his refereeing days, the thrill of being part of the big occasions, what it's like behind the scenes and how he's going to fill his time now.

Just when you thought we couldn't possibly produce any more Podcasts - we have come with one more.

The Laois GAA Pick and Mix Podcast is here and this one will go out occasionally free of charge.

Often, Steven and Alan have a lot of small bits of GAA news that doesn't really get the time it deserves on the Laois Football and Hurling Podcast.

So the Pick and Mix is a space for anything that doesn't make the cut elsewhere. It won't be as regular as the other episodes throughout the season but it will not be behind our paywall.

We start here by looking ahead to Laois v Sligo on Valentines Day and also the start of the National Camogie League.

Laois are in Division 2 and are away to Kerry - also on Saturday February 14.

The lads also talk about the recent exploits of our schools teams, the start of the Kelly Cup and the Laois Ladies minor panel.

There is also a club managerial update, a look at the hurling and football panels plus a county board appointment.
