Rachel is a IBCLC in Massachusetts whose popular blog is a favorite of both families and lactation professionals. Before her foray into lactation-land Rachel received her BA in English with a Journalism concentration and then worked in higher education for years. Allison Porter is an Attorney and Certified Breastfeeding Specialist who breastfed her son for 18 months and daughter until age 2. One more task...and then you'll sit down and enjoy that book in which the bookmark hasn't moved in weeks. Owning a private lactation practice means there will always be tasks that need tending. Granting yourself permission to take a break can be difficult with so many balls in the air. Jabina provided a special lens during this one-hour deeper dive - understanding the demands faced by lactation professionals in private practice and her expertise in the field of mental health. Combining these two gives vital insight into how lactation consultants can say yes to their needs so they can meet the needs of others.

Jabina G. Coleman is a Licensed Social Worker and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. She received her bachelors of science for the Pennsylvania State University and her Masters in Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy and Practice. Jabina has dedicated over a decade to serving women, children, and families throughout the Philadelphia region. Jabina engages with communities through her work as the owner of Life House Lactation & Perinatal Services, LLC, where she provides lactation consultation services and reproductive psychotherapy with a focus on perinatal mental health. She also serves as the co-founder and president of Perinatal Mental Health Alliance for People of Color, unifying professionals of color to support communities’ perinatal mental health needs.

Additionally, Jabina is the co-founder of Breastfeeding Awareness & Empowerment (BAE), a grassroots organization created in response to the public outcry surrounding adverse perinatal health outcomes for U.S. black families. Jabina is a dynamic, national speaker spearheading the call to action: Everyone wants to hold the baby, who will hold the mother? Her professional experiences in hospital social work, community organizing and engagement, and private-practice has drawn many to her for mentorship and leadership. Jabina uses her personal and professional experiences to inspire, and promote emotional wellness and balance among her peers.

Jabina’s work has been published in the Clinical Lactation Journal. She is a published author for Breastfeeding and Human Lactation 6th edition and has been featured in multiple media outlets including the Huffington Post, Philadelphia Inquirer, WHYY and KYW. Jabina has been honored as a recipient of the United States Breastfeeding Committee Cultural Changemaker Award and was a commencement speaker for the 2011 graduating class at her alma mater, the University of Pennsylvania. Jabina is the mother of two beautiful children, one of which she had the pleasure of breastfeeding for 3.5 years. As evidenced by her work, Jabina’s passion for motherhood and social justice are intertwined - she educates and empowers families along their parenthood journey while dismantling systemic barriers impeding on a culture of health. Jabina is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.

Burnout can creep up on you as we found out and it’s not fun!

Babies are the best! Let's talk about all the ways we care for and respect them in a clinical setting with Kiara Aponte MSOT, OTR, CEIM, IBCLC.

Kiara Aponte is an occupational therapist (OT), lactation consultant, and certified educator of infant massage. Her special interest in early childhood development, primitive reflexes, and infant feeding inspired Kiara to pursue her IBCLC as well as specialized training in Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI) and Masgutova Neurosensorimotor Reflex Integration (MNRI). She is the founder of WillOTree Baby in Houston, where she utilizes a specialized perinatal care model that brings together occupational therapy, feeding therapy, and lactation consultation. Through this integrated approach, Kiara offers a holistic solution to common, interconnected challenges faced by new mothers and infants (e.g. pain, feeding difficulties, delayed milestones), with the goal of promoting shorter episodes of care, improved maternal-infant health outcomes, and reduced overall costs for families.

Rachel O'Brien is an IBCLC with a MA in human lactation who runs a busy private practice in Boston and specializes in bottle refusal. She began her specialization in bottle refusal in 2019 and when the pandemic hit Rachel realized that bottle refusal had become a much more widespread feeding problem. Rachel developed a method for teaching parents how to re-frame their baby's "bottle refusal" and to work with their baby instead of against them. Rachel does 1:1 bottle refusal visits both in her office and virtually, and has worked with families across the USA and internationally. Rachel has presented on bottle refusal at national conferences and is known among parents and other professionals as a bottle wizard.

Sheherezad (Sherry) Dubash is a board-certified physical therapist in Long Island City, NY with a career spanning over a decade. She holds a Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) and a Bachelor’s in Exercise Science and Nutrition from Rutgers University. Frustrated by overcrowded clinics that compromised patient care, she adopted a one-on-one treatment model, prioritizing quality, holistic recovery, and injury prevention. Committed to continuous learning, Sherry is a Registered Yoga Teacher (200-RYT), a Certified Kinesiotaping Practitioner®, and a Level I Reiki practitioner. She specializes in musculoskeletal and orthopedic injuries, integrating manual therapy, yoga principles, and Kinesiotaping® into her practice. Lisa Marasco has been working with breastfeeding mothers for over 35 years and has been Internationally Board Certified since 1993. She holds a Master’s degree in Human Development with specialization in Lactation Consulting and was designated a Fellow of ILCA in 2009. Lisa is co-author of Making More Milk: The Breastfeeding Guide to Increasing Your Milk Production, a contributing author to the Core Curriculum for Interdisciplinary Lactation Care, and a Cochrane Collaborative author. She is recently retired from WIC of Santa Barbara County as well as her volunteer position with La Leche League, but continues to research, write and speak.

In this episode, we dive headfirst into the emotional topic that is client communication, especially the kind that happens when everyone’s stressed, sleep-deprived, and possibly holding a crying baby (or crying themselves). 

As a lactation consultant, it turns out, your mood matters. Shocking, right? If you're under-caffeinated, over-caffeinated, or just generally cranky, your ability to be empathetic can fly right out the window. 

Good communication means actually listening (and not just waiting for your turn to talk), choosing our words carefully, and never, ever being the reason a client walks away more stressed than when they showed up.

The goal? Set realistic expectations, offer encouragement, and stop ourselves from promising the moon just to avoid awkward silence.

This month Nichelle Clark, BS, IBCLC, IFC, HSC will take us through her journey supporting a family with triplets born at 32 weeks.

Nichelle Clark is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), Infant Feeding Counselor (IFC), Holistic Sleep Coach (HSC), wife, and mom of two residing in Chesapeake, Virginia. She is the owner of a lactation private practice, SonShine & Rainbows Lactation & Sleep, which was inspired by her son and honors her fertility journey with him. Born and raised in Upper Marlboro, MD, Nichelle isUnited States Navy Veteran and hold a bachelors degree in Political Science. When she’s not spending time with family, she admins multiple online support groups for People of Color, providing breastfeeding support and lactation education to her community. Today we are the ones being interviewed.  Julia, a rockstar student in UCSD's Pathway to Lactation program, slid into our DMs to share her journey and fangirl over the podcast (and reminded us that, yes, people actually listen to this thing).

The conversation begins with an exploration of a typical workday, punctuated by our varied responsibilities as lactation consultants. We also share what we love about our jobs like baby snuggles and supporting new mothers.

But let’s keep it real—our job isn’t all adorable yawns and milk-drunk smiles. We dive into the less Instagram-worthy parts of the gig too: mountains of charting (so. much. charting.), navigating the red tape of the healthcare system, and occasionally wanting to scream into a pillow. 

This episode is part pep talk, part therapy session, and all heart. Julia’s thoughtful questions lit a fire under us, and we walked away feeling like, “Heck yes—we were made for this.” Babies, parents, and yes, even that never-ending charting, bring us back day after day. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.
