On today‘s show, Reyna Cowan interviews his film partner and producer of Color Adjustment, Vivian Kleiman. In addition, she interviews Bay Area filmmaker, Brontez Purnell, who uses the films of Riggs as an inspiration for his own work.

Reyna Cowan interviews Berkeley-based directors: John Haptas and Kris Samuelson about their new documentary essay, Life Overtakes Me. The film looks at refugee children in Sweden who have become afflicted into Resignation Syndrome, withdrawing from the world into a coma-like state for months, or even years. The families of these children have been subjected to severe trauma in their home countries, followed by the anxiety of a lengthy asylum process and an uncertain future.

Valentine’s Day will not be forgotten. Nor will the amazing political developments that fly this way and that way in the battlefield called Pelosi and Trump. This show may well ask, Whatever happened to the United States of America? Didn’t there used to be a country with a name like that?

Interviewing Miryam Sas, a Professor of Comparative Literature and Film & Media at the University of California, Berkeley, she looks at the revolutionary film that follows farmers and student activists fight against the forced eviction from their lands to build a new international airport in Narita, near Tokyo. In today’s Open Book segment Nina Serrano interviews a mother and daughter writing team, Dena and Becky Taylor about their unique work, “Tell Me The Number Before Infinity.” The book is the story of raising a disabled child with cerebral palsy from the perspectives of the parent, Dena, and the child, Becky. Both authors are also poets and read their work, chronicling this coming of age process. Becky is today an equal rights activist who was a trailblazer for mainstreaming in the schools. Dena works as a writer and editor.

We discuss what it says about Asian American representation. Dong directed Hollywood Chinese, the seminal documentary chronicling the Chinese in American feature films. Arthur recently published his first book Forbidden City, USA: Chinatown Nightclubs, 1936-1970 based on his film on the same topic. He is currently working on his next book A Hollywood Chinese Album, a pictorial companion to Hollywood Chinese.

Part Two:

Radio’s interwoven pair—Foley and Serrano, like guitar and piano, like Piedmontese and Siciliano, like tenor and soprano, like Paris and Milano—having survived Trump’s SOTU, are back, unimpaired, to offer their unique blend of whatchamacallit: poetry, music, commentary, what have you. This is Nina’s first poem: I began writing in 1968 at age 36, when I wrote a video drama with Roque Dalton for Cuban TV. Dalton (1935-killed in 1975) was an exiled Salvadoran writer living in Havana. My concern for his safety inspired my first poem in 1969, as he prepared to join the Salvadoran revolutionaries to liberate his country from the military dictatorship. At the time of the poem’s publication in an alternative SF newspaper, Express, I could only use his initials in the title and refer to El Salvador as “unknown terrain.” TO ROQUE DALTON BEFORE LEAVING TO FIGHT IN EL SALVADOR (Havana, 1969) Mass media I adore you. With a whisper in the microphone I touch the mass belly against mine like on a rush hour bus but with no sweat and no embarrassment. “Don’t die,” I whispered, in person. Only the air and revolutionary slogans hung between us. “When I die I’ll wear a big smile.” And with his finger painted a clown’s smile on his Indian face “Don’t die!” the whisper beneath the call to battle. My love of man in conflict with my love for this man. Women die too. They let go their tight grip on breath and sigh, and sigh to die. They say that Tania died before Che. I saw her die in a Hollywood movie. Her blood floated in the river. I stand in the street in Havana. There are puddles here but few consumer goods to float in them. Here the blood is stirred by the sacrifice of smiles to armed struggle. A phrase and an act. They leave one day and they are dead. “Death to the known order. Birth to the unknown.” Blood. Blood. Blood. The warmth of it between the thighs soothes the channel the baby fights and tears. I stand by a puddle in Havana a woman full of blood not yet spilled. Can I spill blood by my own volition? Now it flows from me by a call of the moon; The moon … a woman mopping her balcony spills water from her bucket on my hair, my breasts and into the puddle. The question is answered. Tim Fisher and Roberta Murdock share stories from and about their performance piece, “Evidence of Love,” at La Pena Cultural Center, premiering February 7, 2018. Hosted by Jovelyn Richards.

Evidence of Love brings together a diverse group of people living within the intersection of oppression: women experiencing invisibility within the healthcare system, sex workers, people with disabilities, LGBTQ, working class and economically challenged people. This group of 7 performers take center stage with their real stories of love during systemic distress.

With his piece Her, My Love, Tim Fisher is marking his return to the stage after a lengthy hiatus. A relative newcomer to the Bay Area, following his escape from metro New York City, he is thrilled by the opportunity to share his insights and life experiences in Jovelyn Richards’ curated evening, EVIDENCE OF LOVE. His prior stage experience includes dance and theater performances in NYC and his co-founding of Altiloria Arts Alliance through which he performed in and produced evenings of theatrical stage presentations.

Roberta Murdock began her singing career at the age of fourteen, singing in Japan on an Air Force base. Her plan was to attend Julliard School of Music. Life got in the way: love, children. She returned to her passion in her sixties, making her first musical appearance in Jovelyn Richards’ last play ‘Mz. Pats House’ at La Peña Cultural Center in Berkeley, California.

Reyna Cowan interviews film director Tracy Heather Strain about her new film: Sighted Eyes / Feeling Heart. This American Experience documentary looks at the life of African American playwright and journalist, Lorraine Hansberry. The film is available for streaming on PBS.org.

On March 11, 1959, Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun opened on Broadway and changed the face of American theater forever. As the first-ever black woman to author a play performed on Broadway, she did not shy away from richly drawn characters and unprecedented subject matter. The play attracted record crowds and earned the coveted top prize from the New York Drama Critics’ Circle. While the play is seen as a groundbreaking work of art, the timely story of Hansberry’s life is far less known.

Launching American Masters Season 32, the new documentary American Masters – Lorraine Hansberry: Sighted Eyes/Feeling Heart is the first in-depth presentation of Hansberry’s complex life, using her personal papers and archives, including home movies and rare photos, as source material. The film explores the influences that shaped Hansberry’s childhood, future art and activism. The documentary premieres nationwide Friday, January 19 at 9 p.m. on PBS (check local listings) and will be available to stream the following day via pbs.org/americanmasters and PBS apps. Filmmaker and Peabody Award-winner Tracy Heather Strain (Unnatural Causes, I’ll Make Me a World, American Experience: Building the Alaska Highway) crafts the story of one woman who believed, like many of her generation, that words could change society. Family, friends and colleagues, including Sidney Poitier, Ruby Dee, Harry Belafonte, her sister Mamie Hansberry, Lloyd Richards, Amiri Baraka and Louis Gossett, Jr., share their personal memories of Hansberry, offering an intimate look at a woman who was, as Poitier says in the film, “reaching into the essence of who we were, who we are, and where we came from.”

Narrated by acclaimed actress LaTanya Richardson Jackson (The Fighting Temptations, A Raisin in the Sun) and featuring the voice of Tony Award-winning actress Anika Noni Rose (A Raisin in the Sun, Dreamgirls) as Hansberry, the documentary portrays the writer’s lifetime commitment to fighting injustice and how she found her way to art—the theater—as her medium for activism at a crucial time for black civil rights. American Masters – Lorraine Hansberry: Sighted Eyes/Feeling Heart also explores her concealed identity as a lesbian and the themes of sexual orientation and societal norms in her works. The film title comes from Hansberry’s view that “one cannot live with sighted eyes and feeling heart and not know or react to the miseries which afflict this world.”

Dr. Steven Chen, a son of immigrants and a second generation Taiwanese American, shares his thoughts and story on the relationship of art and science with host Jovelyn Richards. They explore the notion of integrating healing modalities, along with Dr. Chen’s latest involvement with “food farmacy” produce prescriptions.

Steven Chen, MD, is the Medical Director at Hayward Wellness, one of the ambulatory clinics in the Alameda Health System – Alameda County’s safety net system of health. His areas of interest include integrative medicine, social justice and healing justice, and innovative models of care. At Hayward Wellness, he has worked to develop a Food is Medicine program that utilizes a “food farmacy”, produce prescriptions, group visits in a demonstration kitchen, and a cutting edge curriculum to broaden the mindsets of doctors to use food as medicine. His current work focuses on developing a model to better address social determinants of health in the exam room and in the clinic.

As a son of immigrants and a second generation Taiwanese American, Dr. Chen recognizes the importance of language access, and he continues to develop more fluency in Taiwanese, Mandarin Chinese, and Spanish to better serve our communities. Dr. Chen grew up watching his immigrant parents and extended family struggle to navigate life in this new setting. Their experiences mirrored so many of his patient’s experiences: elders with no English trying to navigate the maze of health care, and parents and children divided by language and culture. All of this contributed to his desire and commitment to serve underserved communities.

Thais Nye Derich discusses her new memoir Second Chance: A Mother’s Quest for a Natural Birth after a Caesarian, with host Jovelyn Richards.

When Thais Derich walked into the hospital on the day of her son’s birth, she thought she knew all the answers. One week later, she walked out of the hospital overwhelmed with questions. Not only had she been physically and emotionally damaged, she also felt utterly disillusioned by the majority of the hospital’s financial, legal, and medical protocols. For the next three years, Thais focused on recovering from that day, as well as preparing for the day she may become pregnant again. And then she did get pregnant—and her resolve to give birth the way she originally intended was put to the test.

David H. Weisberg author and playwright talks about his recent published novel The American Plan with host Jovelyn Richards. The book focuses on the mid-20th Century american psyche during the 1950s and early 1960s.

David Weisberg is a teacher, playwright, critic and fiction writer. He has taught at Hunter College in New York City, the University of Delaware, and Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT. He is the author of Chronicles of Disorder, a groundbreaking study of the works of Samuel Beckett in the context of the vehement cultural and aesthetic polemics of mid-century Europe. His shorter works have appeared in The Albuquerque Alibi, The Tennessee Review, The Mississippi Review, Nepantla: Views from the South, Libido, Nerve.com and other journals. His play, Totem and Taboo, premiered February 2016 at the Central Works Theater in Berkeley, CA.

The American Plan, his first novel, is the inaugural volume of a projected three- novel series chronicling the rise and fall of a fictional region of sun-belt America, from the Korean War through the financial debacle of 2008.

“Learning that her missing daughter has been murdered, an anguished mother battles her surviving daughter to make sure the killer receives the death penalty. Their clash of deep-seated beliefs causes long-held resentments to erupt around the family’s tragedy. Their legal advocate swears he’s neutral, but his actions contradict his claim. Challenged by a terrible trade-off, the three struggle to reach a resolution.”

In Springfield, Arkansas in the late 1800s, the lives of a community of poor white southerners have been turned upside down by the Civil War. They are dealing with more than just death and loss – their laws have been changed, catapulting them against their will into the new era of freedom for Negroes.

When two powerful wealthy landowners, H.G. and his brother Grove, are murdered, and then their widows die of scarlet fever, Southern gossip swirls with rumors of patricide, betrayal, and suicide. But nothing rankles the white folks more than the rumor that five formerly enslaved Negro women are living in the old plantation house, Culver Tusk. Why and how did the women come to live there? Tensions grow in the small community, and nothing short of a confrontation will satisfy them.

The film investigates the impact of the “technification” of San Francisco and its impact on community stability, loss of diverse in communities and skyrocketing rent costs. The once free-spirited city of San Francisco is now a “Company Town,” a playground for tech moguls of the “sharing economy.” Airbnb is the biggest hotel. Uber privatizes transit. And now these companies want political power as well. We honor Black History Month by presenting Pacifica’s Archives program, From the Vault. From the Vault presents one of the key architects of the African American Civil Rights Movement, The Reverend Ralpg Abernathy. Born in 1926, Abernathy was raised in Alabama and by 1952 was minister for the largest African American congregation in Montgomery.

When seamstress Rosa Parks refused to relinquish her bus seat to a white passenger, Abernathy and fellow Montgomery minister Martin Luther King, Jr. joined forces and together organized the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

In 1957, He co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which was to become one of the most prominent organizations in the fight for desegregation. Abernathy died in 1990.

Today, we feature the sermon that Abernathy delivered to the SCLC on October 18, 1960, and broadcast only on Pacifica Radio – truly a media outlet at the fore front of social justice reporting.

Former Cherokee Nation Chief Wilma Mankiller, one of the few women ever to lead a major American Indian tribe, has died on Tuesday, April 6. She was 64.

As the first female chief of the Cherokees, serving from 1985 to 1995, Mankiller led the tribe in tripling its enrollment, doubling employment and building new health centers and children's programs. Her first taste of federal policy toward Indians came in the 1950s when her family participated in a government relocation program and ended up in a housing project. As chief, she took Indian issues to t he White House and met with three presidents: Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. Mankiller earned a reputation for facing conflict head-on. She met snide remarks about her surname – a Cherokee military title – with humor, often delivering a straight-faced, "Mankiller is actually a well-earned nickname."

Among her many honors was a Presidential Medal of Freedom – the nation's highest civilian award – presented by Clinton in 1998.

Born at W.W. Hastings Indian Hospital in Tahlequah, Mankiller moved with her family to San Francisco in the 1950s when their farm in Adair County failed. The pledge of opportunity turned out to be a life of poverty in a housing project.

Loretta Barrett Oden who is the founder of the famed Corn Dance Cages in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Oden along with her son, the late chef, Clay Oden opened the first restauarants dedicated to showcasing the amazing bounty of foods indigenous to the Americas. A citizen of the Potawatomi Nation in Oklahoma, she has spent most of her adult years studying, teaching and adapting recipes to preserve to culinary legacy of her upbringing. Here she is speaking at the Bioneers conference in 2006.

Winona LaDuke is an enrolled member of the Mississippi Band of the Anishinaabeg. As Program Director of the Honor the Earth Fund, she works on a national level to advocate, raise public support, and create funding for frontline native environmental groups. She also works as Founding Director for White Earth Land Recovery Project.In 1994, Winona was nominated by Time magazine as one of America's fifty most promising leaders under forty years of age. In 1998, Ms. Magazine named her Woman of the Year for her work with Honor the Earth and she has been awarded several awards including, the Thomas Merton Award in 1996, the Ann Bancroft Award for Women's Leadership Fellowship, and the Reebok Human Rights Award, with which she began the White Earth Land Recovery Project. A graduate of Harvard and Antioch Universities, Winona has written extensively on Native American and Environmental issues. Her articles have appeared in several magazines and anthologies. She has authored the books, Last Woman Standing, All Our Relations and Recovering the Sacred. Here she is speaking earlier this month at the San Francisco Green Festival.

For over a hundred years the Mohawks of Akwesasne, a reservation on the New York-Canada border, pursued the occupation of ironworkers, one of the most dangerous jobs in construction. Mohawks were on the high steel crews of every bridge and skyscraper in Manhattan, commuting between job and their 12-hour-distant home every weekend, and became famous for their skill, daring and major contribution to the skyline of New York. This is the story of men plying a difficult craft in the modern world while cleaving to tribal customs in an ancient world — a balancing act that has taken its toll in lives and relationships. An honest, intimate and informative portrait of an unusual occupation and the Native Americans who made it their own.

We honor Raza Heritage by looking at the plight of latinos/as in Minnesota by bringing you this documentary, Aprendemos Juntos (We Learn Together). Minnesota has gained national and internationl notoriety as a result of massive raids by ICE. We go to rural Minnesota: Long Prairie.

Not a single Latino student has ever graduated from the high school in Long Prarie, Minnesota. The Univesity of Minnesota Minnesota went to these Mexican youths to ask them why. Aprendemos Juntos began as an academic study of the low high school graduation rate of Hispanic teens in Minnesota. Nationally, the rate is lower than for other groups, but in rural Minnesota, the contrast is very stark. In the small town of Long Prairie, the location of this piece, the high school graduation rate for Hispanics is zero, depsite the overall graduation rate being 97%. Rather than writing up a conventional research report to try to address the problem, the research team at the University of Minnesota decided to try making a radio documentary instead, to reach people on a deeper level. The idea was to get the teenagers themselves to weigh in on why no Latino student has graduated from Long Prairie High School. This piece is the result of many hours of group and individual interviews with these young Mexicans in Long Prairie.

Neeli Cherovski is a San Francisco poet and man of letters. He has written biographies of Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and Charles Bukowski, among others, The poet grew up in San Bernardino, California and came to San Francisco in 1975. Cherkovski’s body of poetry includes Animal, and Elegy for Bob Kaufman and Leaning Against Time, for which he was awarded the 15th Annual PEN Oakland/Josephine Miles Literary Award in 2005. Neeli Cherkovski was recently writer-in-residence at the New College of California in San Francisco, where he taught literature and philosophy, before its closing.

Amelia Gonzalez interviews reknown playwright, poet and author, Luis Alfaro.

Luis Alfaro works in plays, poetry, short stories, performance and journalism. A Chicano, born and raised in downtown Los Angeles, he is His work has acumulated numerous awards and recognitions. Among them are: the recipient of a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship and a resident artist at the Mark Taper Forum, where he is co-director of the Latino Theatre Initiative. He has been awarded the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays twice, for his plays Electricidad and Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.
They’re talking about his play, Hero produced by Teatro Vision and playing at MACLA in San Jose. Hero is the story of A young Hero returns home from Iraq. His hard working mother, Vietnam veteran uncle, slacker brother and fickle girlfriend are at a loss as to how to celebrate his return. With humor and insight, Hero looks at a young man’s decision to go to war.

Susana Baca belongs to a new generation of Peruvian singers, delving into the shadows of the past to recover shimmering melodies and seductive rhythms. Her seemingly effortless interpretative skills belie years of work assembling the songs, the stories and the steps of music and dances once consigned to history.
She is a tireless researcher, and is largely responsible for the revival of many forms of Afro-Peruvian folklore. She is also the founder of the "Centro Experimental de Musica Negrocontinuo" (Institute of the Black Continuum), a cultural center dedicated to the study of dance.

Guest host Victoria graces the airwaves by interviewing the renowned playwright José Rivera, Oscar nominated screenwriter of the film Motorcycle Diaries. Rivera offers up another look at the legendary revolutionary with School of the Americas, presented by Teatro Visión and running January 24-February 10, 2008 at the Mexican Heritage Plaza Theater in San José. Directed by Wilma Bonet. She’ll also be joined by Teatro Vision’s artistic director, Elisa Alvarado.
Elisa Marina Alvarado is a founding member and Artistic Director of the 24 year-old Teatro Visión. As an actress, director and community organizer she has been active in the Chicano movement for over thirty years. Elisa has taught theater for Teatro Visión, San José State University, San Francisco State University and many community organizations. She developed a new works program, Codices , through which Teatro Visión has produced world premiers for plays including Conjunto by Oliver Mayer and Boxcar by Silvia Gonzalez S.

Focusing on the days after his capture and before his murder by U.S-trained agents near the Bolivian town of La Higuera, School of the Americas has been called, “..a drama that carves out a human angle ”by Daily Variety and “..controversial, even incendiary” by NYtheatre. As Che was held in a one-room schoolhouse for two days while the Bolivian and U.S. governments decided his fate, a young village schoolteacher spoke to the revolutionary. In the mid 1980s, plays about AIDS started to emerge in the United States. In part, these early plays and the plays that followed were calls to action. They documented the devastation within a community – and showed how little was being done. Blending advocacy and art, the plays also gave us individual characters whose lives touched us deeply. On this program, we’ll hear about three landmark American plays dealing with the AIDS crisis. Don Shewey talks about Larry Kramer’s The Normal Heart, Catherine Sheehy discusses Paula Vogel’s, The Baltimore Waltz, and Robert Vorlicky explores Tony Kushner’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Angels in America. Amelia Gonzalez speaks with Bill Martinez about restrictions of artists’ travel to Cuba.

Bill Martinez is an immigration attorney who has also produced and managed cultural events in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1973. He co-founded the Encuentro del Canto Popular, a San Francisco-based Latin American music festival. His work with the Encuentro lead him to become one of the nation’s leading experts in U.S.-Cuba cultural exchanges and artists, visas. He co-founded the Latino Entertainment Partners which produced historically significant concerts of Cuban artists.

By eliminating the "Public Performance" category for authorized travel to Cuba, the U.S. Treasury Department has further restricted cultural exchange
through travel.

The U.S. Cuba Cultural Exchange has organized a petition campaign to bring attention to the restrictions.

Grace Paley, the activist and writer whose vibrant, Bronx-accented short stories illuminated the daily trials and boisterous interior lives of working-class men and women in language that radiated humanity, intelligence and streetwise humor, died last month on August 22nd. She was 84.

In celebration of her life, this afternoon we bring you, a documentary titled "Rha and Grace" produced by Deepa Fernandez and Matt Rogers that chronicles Grace Paley’s work as an activist juxtaposed with the work of another New Yorker of a younger generation, artist, poet, and social activist, Rha Goddess.

Life today is dramatically different for many youth, compared to pre-Katrina times. One teen, for example, struggles with the trauma of living through the hurricane. A college student tries to plan a career in a city where there are many jobs, but limited professional opportunities. A young musician works to rebuild New Orleans’ music culture beyond the tourist trade. These and other young people share their experience, as they work to reconcile a traumatic past with future dreams and present realities.

On March 5th 2007, a car bomb was exploded on Mutanabbi Street in Baghdad. More than 30 people were killed and more than 100 were wounded. This locale is the historic center of Baghdad bookselling, a winding street filled with bookstores and outdoor book stall. A Coalition has been formed to remind us of the significance of this street. Christopher Isherwood: To celebrate June as Gay Pride Month, Christopher Isherwood is the focus for this episode Cover to Cover-Open Book that comes to us from the Vault. Born in England in 1904, Isherwood came to the United States in 1939 and lived in Santa Monica, California from then until his death in 1986. Isherwood’s literary career began in 1928 with the publication of his first novel, All the Conspirators, and he is probably best known for The Berlin Stories, a collection of writing that fictionalized his life in pre-World War II Berlin; this book was later adapted as the stage play I am a Camera and the popular musical Caberet.

In this program, you will hear a number of rare recordings of Christopher Isherwood, including a recording of the play "The Ascent of F-6," written by Isherwood and W.H. Auden in 1937 (adapted, produced and performed in 1962 at Pacifica station KPFK- Los Angeles by Isherwood and Auden themselves, among others), and an address by Isherwood called "A Personal Statement," given at the University of California- Berkeley as part of the series The Writer at Mid-Century: The Moral Crisis (1962).

One of those luminaries, has been June Jordan. Today, Cover to Cover – Open Book presents an edited version of a Tribute to June Jordan produced by Erica Bridgeman and narrated by Lewis Sawyer. Born July 9, 1936 in Harlem, New York City, she passed away after a long struggle with breast cancer on June 14, 2002, in Berkeley, California.

She published 28 books of poetry, essays, and fiction. She was a regular columnist for The Progressive and a prolific writer whose articles appeared in The Village Voice, The New York Times, Ms., Essence, the American Poetry Review, The Nation, and many other periodicals.

We honor the renowned author, Tillie Olsen who recently passed away on January 1st , 2007 in Oakland, California. She would have celebrated her 95th birthday on January 14.

We have been able to find a treasure in our archives where she is reading from her book, Yonnondio, the novel that Tillie Olsen wrote the majority of when she was nineteen years old in the thirties and finally published in 1974.

Nina Serrano hosts a showcase of Piri Thomas’ work. Piri Thomas’ creative impact is not limited to the written word. As seen in EVERY CHILD IS BORN A POET, Thomas’ poetry can take the form of storytelling, a spoken word performance, a musical "word song" – or all of the above.

Since the 1967 publication of his breakthrough novel Down These Mean Streets, Thomas has dedicated himself to education and activism. His prose and poetry about struggle, survival and identity have continued to impact and inspire audiences around the world.
Thomas is also well-known as one of the pioneers of spoken word poetry, a form of poetry performance that has its roots in hip hop, performance art and the Beat poetry movement. By performing aloud, spoken word artists succeed in taking poetry out of the academia and onto the streets, breaking down barriers and making it accessibleboth in its creation and its consumption – by the poor, the young and by other marginalized communities. Thomas mixes his spoken word poetry with Latin jazz, Caribbean music, salsa, rhythm and blues and gospel music.

Piri Thomas’ message of "unity among us" reinforces tenets of peace and social justices through prose, poetry and performance.
He will be reading from his latest book, Stories From El Barrio in the Bay Area :

Being one of the 1st to be diagnosed with HIV in the early 80’s, "Us" also speaks to how their relationship adapted to the unique challenges of living with an indiscriminating disease.

"Us" is a love letter. It is a sonnet- an ode, a dirge- a celebration. In this time of cruelty and fear perhaps the only true HOPE is in "Us".

On June fifth, 1981 the first case of AIDS was reported. Twenty five years later, South Africa presently has the largest number of people with HIV/AIDS in the world. More than five million South Africans are HIV positive. The following radio diaries brings us the story of Thembi.

Thembi is a South African young 19 year old woman. For the past year, she has been carrying a tape recorder and keeping an audio diary of her struggle to live with AIDS. Thembi captured the small moments of her life that help tell a larger story: her first conversation with her mother about AIDS; a visit to the township clinic to apply for life-saving drugs; facing neighbors and friends as they slowly learn her status; a moment of quiet, late-night dancing at home with her boyfriend.

Hoy es Cinco de Mayo, and no, it’s not Mexican independence day and it’s not a U.S. holiday. Yet it is a day of great importance. For the Mexican and Xicano communities, it marks the victory of the Mexican army over the French en la Batalla de Puebla that took place on the morning of May 5th, 1862.

Although the Mexican army was eventually defeated, the "Batalla de Puebla" came to represent a symbol of Mexican unity and patriotism. With this victory, Mexico demonstrated to the world that her people were willing to defend themselves from any foreign intervention. For the Xicana Community, it has become a day to celebrate pride, independence, and freedom.

On Open Book today, we mark this day by bringing you an interview with Xicano poet, writer and educator, Tomas Riley. He’s also a veterano of the seminal Chicano spoken-word collective The Taco Shop Poets.

THE CITY WILL RISE delves deeply into the little-known stories of the landowners, the press lords, the cultural, political and military leaders and the ethnic minorities of the time, and their responses to one of history’s greatest natural disasters. The theme of the documentary is "lessons learned and lessons lost," and producer Jesse Boggs takes the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake Centennial as his cue to examine our responses to contemporary disasters of equal magnitude: the Twin Towers attacks of September 11, 2001, and the onslaught of Hurricane Katrina in the fall of last year. The emphasis remains on storytelling throughout–not statistics. Boggs wants to re-acquaint us with what is most basic in these horrific events: the irrepressible human urge–with all its costs and all its rewards–to build again, regardless of the extent of the devastation.

In the last few weeks, we have witnessed the
devastation left behind throughout the south by the
hurricanes Katrina and Rita. For the next half hour,
you’ll be hearing the first of a four part reading
produced by Susan Stone where we’ll take a journey
with Janie Crawford in Zora Neale Hurston’s classic,
Their Eyes Were Watching God.
First Published in 1937, this novel is a striking and
timeless portrait of Janie Crawford’s evolving sense
of self through her three marriages. We meet her in
part one as the young, troubled wife of joe starks,
her husband is the new major of orange county and he
has set up his wife janie, as the store manager and
right hand of his many business ventures in town. As
Joe takes centerstage, Janie fades to the background,
and this is where we find her.

Americas,we bring you the end-dependence poets. This
is a group of poets of diverse backgrounds coming
together and breaking the borderlines. Borderlines
that historically have kept different people of the
Americas apart. The following performance was
