In this episode of Key Biscayne Stories — where neighbors meet neighbors, Alejandro Servalli sits down with Michele Estevez, a 47-year resident and the longest-standing member of the Key Biscayne Fourth of July Parade Committee.

Michele shares the history and heart behind the parade as it prepares for its 67th year and celebrates the 250th anniversary of American Independence. She takes us behind the scenes — from organizing marching bands and coordinating the Air Force flyover to managing volunteers, fundraising, and parade-day logistics.

Last year’s parade cost nearly $60,000 and required months of planning, strong village support, and dedicated community volunteers.

DeCue King is a certified fitness trainer with a background in boxing, karate, and football. He has obtained a personal training certification from the world fitness association and a level 1 + 2 boxing certification from Box and Burn academy. DeCue has over ten years of personal training experience, working with everyone from beginners to professional athletes. DeCue specializes in boxing, weight loss, and youth athletic development.

Vince Smith has been into sports and fitness for most of my life. He loves working out but didn't realize it was his true passion until COVID-19 happened, and Vince started training his sister via zoom; she lost 30 lbs. That's when it clicked, and he said, "this is what I'm meant to do." It brings him so much joy to help others become a better version of themselves inside and out.

The Islander News has been covering “The Life and Times of Key Biscayne, Florida” since Nov. 2, 1966, when it was founded by Sue Morton as The Islander Key Biscayne Weekly Bulletin, selling for 15 cents per issue or 50 cents for a monthly subscription. That first issue led with the story, “Key Biscayne is changing,” which detailed new shops and homes on the island, and heralded the impending opening of Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park on the island’s southern tip. It announced a Lion’s Club lightbulb sale, the Key Biscayne Music and Drama Club’s production of Mary Mary, the volunteer fire department’s search for more volunteers and a three-bedroom home renting for $225 per month. Today, the newspaper continues to pride itself on being Key Biscayne’s most trusted source of local news, and not only telling the Village’s stories, but participating in its events and civic life.
