Hey everyone! Nora and Maryna here, and we have a very special guest today—Donna Smith! We're thrilled to have her with us. Donna is a trailblazer in the film industry and has an impressive resume as the first female president of physical and post-production at Universal Studios.

We kick off the episode by delving into Donna's remarkable career. She has produced over 157 movies, including a dozen Oscar winners. Her journey is nothing short of inspiring, and we can't wait to share it with you.

Donna's story begins in Minneapolis. In 1979, tired of the cold and snow, she and her husband decided to move to Los Angeles. They had no connections, no jobs lined up—just the drive to escape the Midwest weather. They both came from the Guthrie Theater, where Donna's husband was a Shakespearean director.

Donna's first job in LA was as an assistant filing clerk. She hilariously recalls thinking she was working for a tire company until she realized it was actually a film production company. This unexpected start led to her role as a production coordinator on Rocky II and later, the production manager for Raging Bull, which earned seven Oscars.

Donna's career skyrocketed from there. She shared stories of working on iconic films like Terminator, The Matrix, and Waterworld. Her experiences highlight the challenges and excitement of film production, from managing massive crews to handling unexpected setbacks.

One particularly funny story was how Donna met Nora. It was a classic LA moment—they met at a secret bar, struck up a conversation, and the rest is history. Donna's openness to new connections and her willingness to mentor up-and-coming filmmakers like us is truly inspiring.

We also discussed Donna's philanthropic efforts, including her role as the United States Film Ambassador to China and her work with the World Hero Foundation, which builds homes for veterans. Despite her busy career, Donna finds time to give back and support the next generation of filmmakers.

Donna's advice for those trying to make it in Hollywood? Perseverance. She emphasizes the importance of being persistent and believing in yourself, even when faced with rejection. Her own company's name, Persnickety Productions, reflects her meticulous and determined nature.

In this episode, you'll hear about:
- Donna's early days in Minneapolis and her move to LA
- Her unexpected entry into the film industry
- Working on legendary films like Rocky II, Raging Bull, Terminator, and The Matrix
- The challenges of managing big productions like Waterworld
- Her philanthropic work and mentoring young filmmakers
- Valuable advice on perseverance and making it in Hollywood

Donna's stories are not just entertaining but also incredibly motivating for anyone aspiring to succeed in the film industry. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did!

In this episode, we dive into part two of our experiences at the New York Film Academy, where we learned the ins and outs of filmmaking through a hands-on approach. We discuss the practical skills taught, from screenwriting and editing to handling cameras and pitching films, emphasizing the importance of understanding every aspect of filmmaking.

Highlights:
- Hands-On Learning: We highlight the importance of directly engaging in filmmaking during our studies, contrasting this with the more theoretical approaches of other schools.
- Skills Over Theory: We discuss the variety of classes that prepared us for multiple roles in the industry, not just limiting us to one aspect of filmmaking.
- Transition to Professional Work: We share our transitions from the academic setting to the harsh realities of the film industry, focusing on the critical, often blunt feedback from instructors that prepared us for the industry's challenges.
- Industry Realities: We cover the competitiveness and harsh truths of the entertainment industry in LA, including the struggles and strategies for new actors and filmmakers to make their mark.
- We laugh about our initial acting exercises, where we had to make animal sounds and crawl around — a stark contrast to the glamorous image of film school.
- We share a humorous tale of casting confusion and the miscommunications that often occurred between departments, leading to funny mix-ups during student projects.

This episode offers a candid and detailed discussion about the realities of film school and transitioning into the professional film industry. Our personal stories and insights provide valuable lessons and advice for aspiring filmmakers and actors on navigating their careers with realistic expectations and strategic planning.

Today, it’s all about diving headfirst about us coming to Los Angeles for film school . Joining me is my good friend and fellow film enthusiast, Maryna, as we unwrap our rollercoaster journey from dreamy aspirations to the gritty reality of wanting to make movies in LA.

Picture this: moving to LA with stars in your eyes, ready to conquer the film world. Sounds glamorous, right? Well, it's not all red carpets and premiere parties. Maryna and I chat about our initial impressions of LA, the excitement, the nerves, and yep, the total culture shock.

Film school. Those were the days full of endless projects, learning the ropes, and yes, a fair share of drama (both on and off the screen). We dive into what film school was really like, from our first "aha" moments to the sleepless nights before deadlines. It's where we learned to blend creativity with technical skills – and a whole lot of coffee.

From Classroom to Set
Ever wondered what it feels like stepping onto a professional set for the first time? We spill the beans on our post-grad adventures, navigating the vast world of Hollywood. Here’s where "faking it till you make it" became our mantra. Confidence? Had to fake that till we made it too. But boy, were those experiences worth every nerve-wracking moment.

Cultural Quirks
Coming from different corners of the world to LA was, well, interesting.
