Jonathan Pokluda is on a mission to help people "identify spiritual warfare" and "defeat the enemy." Pokluda, pastor of Harris Creek Baptist Church in Waco, Texas, is tackling the topic of spiritual warfare head-on, recently releasing "Your Story Has a Villain: Identify Spiritual Warfare and Learn How to Defeat the Enemy," a new book aimed at helping people see through chaos to discern truth.

As Pokluda embarked on his own spiritual journey years ago, he realized something: many people were missing a key piece to the spiritual puzzle. In fact, some Christians weren't fully aware — or even seeking — answers about the overarching spiritual battle raging between good and evil that Paul describes in Ephesians 6. "Being raised Catholic, I would see statues of angels and demons, and I was taught in religion class about the spiritual war that was happening around me," he said. "And I knew the story in Genesis 3, the fall, you know the tempting of Satan in the Garden of Eden."

Pokluda continued, "But, if this war was happening around us, I knew very little about it. And I didn't know what could happen." The preacher said he was shocked to realize many people in the Christian community seemed "comfortable not knowing" these answers. This led Pokluda to do an in-depth exploration of what the Bible actually teaches. "It really was a three-year journey," he said, noting he eventually went on to do a teaching series about the topic at his church, helping others discover what he learned from Scripture.

Ultimately, Pokluda said it's essential for Christians to understand Ephesians 6 and the battle between good and evil, warning that "spiritual warfare has implications for everything we do." "It's a foundational truth to the Christian faith," he added. Listen to him explain.

Riaan Swiegelaar was a practicing witch, psychic, and Satanist, living his life deeply embedded in the occult. Then, an earth-shattering encounter with Jesus changed everything.

Swiegelaar's story went viral in 2022 after he left his post as a reverend with the South African Satanic Church (SASC), and became a Christian. The global attention wasn't something he was expecting.

"I didn't anticipate at the time that it's going to go that wide," he said, noting he was almost immediately "under scrutiny from around the world" as he navigated his newfound faith. "It has been an interesting two years, indeed."

Since becoming a Christian, Swiegelaar sought deliverance, coped with the demonic, and is now helping others who are on a similar journey out of the grips of Satanism. But the process has been a long journey.

"After I had my encounter with Christ and after I was saved, I was fully involved with certain practices," he said. "I was still doing readings for people … because I thought, 'No, I'm sure it's OK.'"

But Swiegelaar was soon convicted by the Holy Spirit and found himself going for more deliverance and finding freedom and healing from these practices.

In an appearance on "Billy Hallowell's Playing With Fire" podcast, he explained how he rose up the ranks of Satanism, noting he had a background in theology and the occult and was practicing witchcraft and psychic mediumship when he came into the movement.

"A lot of people who join Satanism — and this was also my experience with members of that organization ... people join in it on different types of labels depending on their background and understanding," he said.

As for Swiegelaar's experience as a Satanist, he said he "saw a lot of things happening" and was profoundly "deceived."

"When I initially got involved in Satanism, I remember the first time I read the Satanic Bible … it appeals to people that are very wounded and broken … and feel like they are the odd ones out," he said. "It is written in that way for a reason. … You can define your own version of what divinity is."

At first, Swiegelaar saw God as energy and Lucifer as a force in each human being, though that later changed as he began to experience a very different dynamic.

"I had a few encounters where I actually saw different faces of the enemy," he said. "It became extremely real."

While many Satanists consider themselves to be atheists, he said there's often more to this story than meets the eye, as this idea that the devil doesn't exist is purportedly sometimes a tactic or even a misconception among new Satanic congregants.

"A lot of Satanists who initially get involved with Satanism from an atheistic point of view, most of them don't believe that the devil exists," he said, noting, though, that manifestations sometimes change so that people start to see these beliefs are, indeed, rooted in reality. "The time when ... things become very real with Satanic rituals and stuff, you're so deep into it that it's difficult to come out."

With the "wool over" some people's eyes, Swiegelaar said it can feel impossible to get out or abandon Satanism, with the dynamics becoming "extremely destructive." Some, he said, are even pushed to the brink of suicide.

He said part of his own job centered on trying to convince the public there is no devil.

"[The] devil wants to deceive people to think there's no Satan," Swiegelaar said, noting this impacted his efforts to play into this dynamic. "That is part of that very agenda that I'm talking about. It is simply that. Unfortunately, there [are] some people in media who do know the truth, because they are Satanists themselves."

One of the most deceptive and surprising elements of Satanism, he said, is that there's a stereotype or expectation of what Satanists should look like. But rather than appearing strange or fitting that dynamic, Swiegelaar said many Satanists are police, teachers, and others who would otherwise be seen as normal.

Yet he said some of the activities within Satanism are far outside of the mainstream. From black masses to the observance of monthly minor practices, Swiegelaar said he was very involved in commemorating Satanism and even running these rituals.

"In terms of animal sacrifices, yes, certainly that happens," he said. "I've been involved in that."

Swiegelaar also had much to say about babies, Satanic ritual abuse, the drinking of blood, and other disturbing occurrences — practices he had purportedly witnessed or been involved in.

But all of this is now behind him after his conversion to Christianity.

"The amount of love that I experienced ... there was just no choice but to follow Him," Swiegelaar said of Jesus. "It was Jesus Christ who saved me."

And the story behind his introduction to that love is incredible. It all started when Swiegelaar was asked to perform a ritual, and as he was preparing for it, something remarkable happened.

"As I turned around, I saw this figure," he said. "And I thought, in that moment, 'These demons are showing up already? I haven't even started with the ritual.'"

But Swiegelaar soon realized he wasn't dealing with the demonic.

"I said, 'Who are you?' And, when he said, 'Yeshua of Nazareth,' I obviously doubted that," he continued, noting he asked Jesus to "prove it." "And that's when He flooded me with that love. ... it was incredible."

Swiegelaar continued, "Everything stopped. Everything went quiet. I was completely embraced with that love. I was in shock."

That's how military veteran and artist Timothy Gagnon described his early years, explaining how he descended into evil practices while he was a young man. When he hit the sixth grade, Gagnon recalled an oral report assignment he was given. Unsure of what to do, he went to the school library and stumbled upon books on the occult.

That introduction to the topic led him into spell casting, playing with Ouija boards, and channeling spirits, among other similar activities — things he did "all day long" and "all night long" alongside two of his friends who also descended into the same practices.

Gagnon said these spells weren't empty practices — that something happened when he would engage with the occult. He said he and his friends interacted with three entities that claimed to be an angel, a demon, and a "lost spirit in purgatory." 

In the end, it was a true encounter with the demonic. And then God stepped in.

DeFlorio is using his investigative skills to help people who believe they’re facing ills from the demonic realm. He and his wife Harmony run New York Demonic Investigation, an organization that seeks to explore these potential scenarios.

“It wasn’t until I pretty much focused full-time into this area, which we’ll call demonology, through the church, [that] I started to try to differentiate … the secondary evil that I was seeing on the street in human beings,” he told "Billy Hallowell's Playing With Fire Podcast." “And then [I wondered], ‘What’s behind that? There, there must be a primary evil.'”

That’s when DeFlorio began to take a Bible-based approach to try and understand wickedness — a path that led him to apply his law enforcement skills to demonology and the biblical understanding of the manifestation of evil.

Jenn Nizza, a Christian who now shares her testimony on social media and through her new podcast, “Ex-Psychic Saved,” warned about young people’s increased use of such tools.

“This is so New Age … using crystals for protection, to ward off evil, for enlightenment, to bring about psychic awareness, to place on chakras, thinking you’re going to open them up and use the energy from the crystals,” she told CBN’s Faithwire. “This whole thing is relying on energy with crystals.”

Nizza reflected on her past use of crystals as a psychic, noting she used a heart-shaped rose quartz pendant to try and draw love toward herself. She said people use crystals for other reasons as well, including protection against illness.

“Yoga is a Hindu spiritual practice, and the word ‘yoga’ is rooted in Sanskrit. It means ‘to yoke to’ or ‘to unite with,’ and what they’re doing,” she said on "The Playing With Fire" podcast. “They have deliberate postures that are paying tribute, honor, and worship to their false gods, and they have over 330,000,000 false gods, which are demons, and they’re honoring them with these postures.”

That's not an admission one would expect to hear from a preacher, but Ben Atkins wasn't always a believer. In fact, the U.K.-based pastor went through quite a harrowing journey — one that took him into the bowels of a Satanic worldview before he discovered hope in Christ.

"This is my story. These are my experiences," Atkins said on "The Playing With Fire" podcast, noting his story involves "supernatural things" and that he is careful not to go beyond what he experienced and what he sees in Scripture. "I'm quite hesitant to go beyond what the Bible says, what Jesus taught, and my experience. That's really all I can share with any sort of authority."

Atkins described growing up in a chaotic household that looked comfortable from the outside — a scenario he likened to the "English equivalent of the American Dream." But beneath the surface was a lot of trauma, with the situation leaving him "questioning everything" at an early age.

Then, he found Satanism.

“It seems all too common in today’s culture that we are being bombarded with everything except for Christianity,” he said.

Signorelli pointed to 2 Corinthians 11:14 when reacting to claims “Hocus Pocus 2” puts a more friendly face on witchcraft. The verse reads, in part, “Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.” Listen to the conversation. 

The key question: what's driving the increase? And how should Christians respond? 

"So, the fascination with evil in society right now — we have a huge interest in the supernatural and people don't know where to turn to learn about that," Petra explained. "So, they're turning to the wrong side."
