    Despite their interest in architecture, most Tartaria theorists do not appear to have backgrounds in the building trades: Many of the more easily refuted arguments spring from very basic misunderstandings of how the built environment works, as well as broader confusion about how buildings function in the economy and culture. An abundance of posters appear convinced that below-grade basement windows in older buildings, for example, are evidence that the building had been “mud flooded,” and the rest of the structure is actually buried deep underground. Sometimes this will get some skeptical pushback (“I think they didn’t have lights in the cellar so they build in windows for them?” was how one poster responded), but that’s more of an exception than the rule.

    They sneer at the wedding-cake-topper Second Empire buildings designed by Alfred Mullett after the Civil War, for example. “How many stamps did you sell to build yourself a post office like this?,” says popular Tartarian YouTuber JonLevi in one of his videos. “Absolutely ridiculous. The post office has always struggled.” (He has more than 100,000 subscribers.) Some of this confusion is unfamiliarity: Mullett’s U.S. Customs House and Post Office in St. Louis, for example, was a huge federal project, built to process the mail of 10 states and four U.S. territories, not a neighborhood letter depot. But beyond that, there’s a broader refusal to believe that public architecture could ever have been built in an atmosphere of generosity and abundance. This is echoed by their astonishment at the double-height grand lobbies and arched doorways of old buildings, which they see as artifacts not meant for us. (Some theorists surmise that ancient Tartarians were giants.) The Tartarian community seems to have internalized the current era’s predilection for public sector austerity and the resulting aesthetics, which they abhor, more than they realize.

    This disregard for architecture’s “true” history moves into a wider rejection of how disposably cheap and commodified the culture at large seems to be. As such, one canonical belief of Tartarian aficionados is that the elaborate temporary pavilions built for late 19th century and early 20th century World’s Fairs were in fact Tartarian capital cities. It strikes them as improbably wasteful that anyone would erect these magnificent complexes, full of fluted columns, domes and pediments, out of plaster of Paris, hemp fiber, and straw, as was done for the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago. In Tartarian lore, these sites were ancient monuments that were co-opted to teach a falsified history of the world and make a few bucks selling popcorn and Ferris Wheel rides. Then they were demolished, to erase the handiwork of the real builders. … In pointing out the eradication of an ancient culture by an expanding imperial power, Tartarian believers again stumble on something real, but they scramble the protagonists.

      New data showed both methane and carbon dioxide reached record amounts in the atmosphere last year, despite the coronavirus pandemic bringing much of the world’s economy to a halt.

      Lori Bruhwiler, physical scientist at the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said the jump in methane levels was “fairly surprising — and disturbing”.

      “We don’t usually expect them to jump abruptly in a year,” said Bruhwiler. The exact reasons for the increase are not yet known, she added.

      Methane, which is 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide as a factor in global warning, comes from using fossil fuels such as coal and gas and from microbial sources in wetlands, cows and landfill.

      One hypothesis for the increase in methane is a rise in emissions from biological sources such as wetlands, according to Nisbet.

      “Parts of the tropics have grown warmer and wetter” because of global warming, triggering the release of more methane, he said.

      Another hypothesis is that the atmosphere’s ability to “clean up” methane by breaking it down over time has declined.

      “A warming planet could be causing more natural emissions of methane,” said Durwood Zaelke, president of the Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development, an environmental charity based in Washington DC that focuses on shortlived climate pollutants such as methane.

    Solar-paneling canals would not only produce renewable energy for use across the state, it would run the water system itself. “By covering canals with solar panels, we can reduce evaporation and avoid disturbing natural and working lands, while providing renewable energy and other co-benefits,” says environmental engineer Brandi McKuin of the University of California, Merced, and the University of California, Santa Cruz, lead author on the paper.

    Ironically enough, the performance of solar panels falls as temperatures rise. In a solar cell, photons from the sun knock electrons out of atoms, producing an electric current. When a panel gets too hot, that puts electrons into an already excited state, so they don’t create as much energy when dislodged by photons. Spanning panels over canals would, in a sense, make them water-cooled, boosting their efficiency. “And additionally,” McKuin adds, “shade from the panels mitigates aquatic weed growth, which is a major canal maintenance issue.”

Like the 9/11 bombers or the mass murderer at the Pulse nightclub, he took out his angst on the source of what he saw as his temptation, and committed mass murder. This is evil in the classic fundamentalist sense: a perversion of religion and sexual repression into violence.

      We should not take the killer’s confession as definitive, of course. But we can probe it — and indeed, his story is backed up by acquaintances and friends and family. The New York Times originally ran one piece reporting this out. The Washington Post also followed up, with one piece citing contemporaneous evidence of the man’s “religious mania” and sexual compulsion. It appears that the man frequented at least two of the spas he attacked. He chose the spas, his ex roommates said, because he thought they were safer than other ways to get easy sex. Just this morning, the NYT ran a second piece which confirms that the killer had indeed been in rehab for sexual impulses, was a religious fanatic, and his next target was going to be “a business tied to the pornography industry.”

      We have yet to find any credible evidence of anti-Asian hatred or bigotry in this man’s history. Maybe we will. We can’t rule it out. But we do know that his roommates say they once asked him if he picked the spas for sex because the women were Asian. And they say he denied it, saying he thought those spas were just the safest way to have quick sex. That needs to be checked out more. But the only piece of evidence about possible anti-Asian bias points away, not toward it.

      And yet. Well, you know what’s coming. Accompanying one original piece on the known facts, the NYT ran nine — nine! — separate stories about the incident as part of the narrative that this was an anti-Asian hate crime, fueled by white supremacy and/or misogyny. Not to be outdone, the WaPo ran sixteen separate stories on the incident as an anti-Asian white supremacist hate crime. Sixteen! One story for the facts; sixteen stories on how critical race theory would interpret the event regardless of the facts.

Also requires trucks for the last mile, and also requires cranes or other lifting equipment. Trailer-on-flatcar also wastes space relative to a roadrailer or containerized freight. The space between the trailer and flatcar is essentially unused. Double-stack intermodal container cars use this entire space. On roadrailers, this space is just the usual space under the railcar that is not typically used.

Roadrailer

Requires trucks for the last mile, but, crucially, requires minimal special equipment. Trailers can be driven right into the yard and connected to bogies.

However, roadrailer trailers are considerably heavier than conventional semi trailers because they must bear the weight of an entire train. This concept is dying out anyway.

Boxcars

Boxcars are the classic, and they kind of got it right. Can be delivered by rail to the end customer (assuming they have a spur). Doors on each side allow for easy loading and unloading. No need for specialized lifting equipment. Can be shuttled around easily with a railcar mover (which is comparable to a yard truck or some forklifts).

The Problem With Boxcars

Boxcars must be loaded and unloaded and are not really intermodal. This is a process called “break bulk” freight and it is out of fashion because of how inefficient it is considered versus loading an intermodal container from a ship directly onto a truck or train, which requires no unloading of any kind.

For some uses, especially of bulk cargo, containers remain unpopular, because they simply don’t make as much sense. It’s much easier to use tank cars to transport liquids or gas than containerized tanks (which exist, but are needlessly complex), and transporting bulk materials like rock or coal, etc., rarely requires containerization, and can go into specialized hopper or gondola cars.

Rail Freight Is A Land Of Contrasts

One of the great things about rail freight, though, is the variety of cars that can be used to transport goods. These include:

• Boxcars
• Refrigerator cars (“reefers”)
• Hoppers
• Covered hoppers
• Gondolas
• Centerbeam cars
• Flatcars
• Well cars

And all of these can be combined in any combination on a single train and hauled with only a few locomotives. Rail freight transport is often far more efficient than truck haulage. The longest train ever, an iron ore train ran by BHP Billton in Australia, had a weight of 99,734 metric tons, hauling 82,000 tonnes of ore in 682 cars along 7.3 km. It used 8 locomotives, with a total power of 35,200 hp. This would equivalently require 4,017 semi trucks with a required 2,048,670 hp. Imagine the fuel consumption difference.

Long trains in the US can reach about 2.29 miles across 180 cars, typically hauled by 4 locomotives.

  • Permaculture is hard to define
    • Permaculture, as an idea, is sprawling and all-encompassing. It can be difficult to easily define because it is almost like a whole ideology or culture.

      10. Use and value diversity: Diversity reduces vulnerability to a variety of threats and takes advantage of the unique nature of the environment in which it resides.
      11. Use edges and value the marginal: The interface between things is where the most interesting events take place. These are often the most valuable, diverse and productive elements in the system.
      12. Creatively use and respond to change: We can have a positive impact on inevitable change by carefully observing, and then intervening at the right time.

Beginnings

• Passenger rail service started pretty much along with the first railroads in the 1830s, and grew to become the primary method of intercity travel
• By 1916, 98% of all intercity travel was by rail, and passengers traveled 42 billion miles that year
• “High speed” rail first emerged in the 1930s, with the first diesel streamlined stainless steel trains, built by the Budd Company
  • Burlington Zephyr, Pioneer Zephyr, California Zephyr
• Service averaged around 80mph, and was fairly popular, but eventually suffered due to the Great Depression
• However, passenger numbers recovered during WWII, when gas rationing made automobile travel less feasible

The 79 mph rule

• In 1946, two passenger trains collided, resulting in the death of 45 people
• One train collide with another, stopped train
• The colliding train had passed a red stop signal, which the engineer said he had not seen
• As a result of this disaster, the regulator of the railroads, the Interstate Commerce Commission, set up new regulations in response:
  • Nationwide rail speed limits were imposed for the first time
  • Automatic signalling was required on many lines
  • Signals inside the cab (cab signalling) was required on any line that exceeded 79mph
• Many railroads, already struggling with infrastructure costs, did not want to pay to upgrade their equipment
• As a result, they all ran their trains at less than 79 mph to avoid needing to install new equipment
• This greatly reduced the competitiveness of passenger rail at a time when car ownership was skyrocketing

Enter Shinkansen

• In 1964, Japan Railways began service on the Shinkansen (new trunk line) from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka
• This was the first system for dedicated high speed rail service in the world
• Trains ran at speed of 130mph (210 km/h)
• The US responded to Shinkansen by deciding to spur HSR development
• The HSGTA was passed in 1965

Metroliner

• The HSGTA provided for the development of high speed service along the existing Northwest Corridor line of the Pennsylvania Railroad from NYC to DC
• This line had been electrified in the 1930s and was still a busy passenger line
• Eastern Air Line had also began an air shuttle service between the two cities in 1961, which became very popular*
• This service was named after the rolling stock that would be built for it: Metroliners
• Metroliners were a project between the PRR, USDOT, and Budd
• Metroliners were advanced electric multiple unit trains designed for speeds of up to 150 mph (240 km/h)
• However, they were plagued with electrical issues, and despite deliveries beginning in 1967, they did not enter service until 1969
• By 1969, the PRR had merged with the NYC to form Penn Central, which operated the Metroliner service
• Metroliners continued to experience various problems throughout their service life and were limited to 120 mph, then 110, then 100 mph, never fully living up to the design promise
• However, the Metroliner design was very popular and inspired new designs of passenger coaches that would eventually be used by Amtrak and many commuter rail services

UAC TurboTrain

• At the same time, the UAC was working on its own high speed train system, based on gas turbines derived from jet engines
• This would allow high speed operation on non-electrified lines, with the non-electrified portion of the NEC from New Haven to Boston in mind, as well as journeys from Chicago to points west
• They were also some of the first tilting trains created
• However, they were considered very noisy and rough, and were withdrawn from service in 1976 in the US, though they continued to be used in Canadian National’s Quebec-Toronto Corridor service from 1968 to 1982.

Black Beetle

• The New York Central also experimented with high speed trains in 1966
• They strapped two jet engines taken from a B-36 bomber to one of their Budd Rail Diesel Cars, number M-497, to create the Black Beetle, a jet-powered train
• This train set the current American rail speed record of 183 mph
• The train was not considered economically feasible and was dismantled shortly after

Failure of Private Passenger Service

• Compared to the 1918 high of 98% of all intercity travel, by 1957 only 32% of intercity travel was by rail
• Passenger miles decreased from the 1916 high of 42 billion to just 49,000 in 1970
• There were many causes for the decline, but it was primarily due to the rise of automobile travel due to the creation of the interstate highway, and the declining cost of air travel
• Railroads had always been responsible for constructing and maintaining their own infrastructure
• By contrast, federal and state governments funded the construction of roads and highways, essentially subsidizing both private car travel and trucking
• By the late 1960s, much of the railroads’ infrastructure was old and worn out, but funds were scarce for replacement
• Railroads also followed routes originally laid out in the 19th century, which were not chosen or selected with high speed service in mind
• Though passenger rail travel had surged during WWII, it crashed immediately afterwards, as soon as gas rationing was discontinued

Collapse and Rescue

• In 1967, the USPS diverted mail service from passenger trains to trucks, planes, and freight trains, eliminating a previously-reliable source of revenue*
• Soon after, the ATSF, one of the larger railroads, filed with the ICC to discontinue 33 of its 39 passenger routes
• Things really came to a head after the Penn Central, which had been created in 1968 with the merger of the PRR, NYC, and eventually the bankrupt New Haven, entered into the largest corporate bankruptcy in US history in 1970, filing to discontinue the majority of its passenger routes
• The PC was the largest passenger railroad at the time
• In response, Congress passed the Rail Passenger Service Act in 1970, which created the National Railroad Passenger Corporation to take over passenger service from the private railroads
• NRPC was first named Railpax, then Amtrak
• 26 railroads were eligible to turn their passenger service over to Amtrak, and 21 did so
• Amtrak began service on May 1, 1971, immediately trimming half of the previously existing passenger rail routes

Amtrak’s Problems

• Amtrak was not expected to survive very long
• It inherited a plethora of problems from the railroads

    Margaret Thatcher said that “there is no such thing as society,” and Ronald Reagan said that “government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.” These stupid slogans marked the turn away from the postwar period of reconstruction and underpin much of the bullshit of the past forty years. We are individuals first, yes, just as bees are, but we exist in a larger social body. Society is not only real; it’s fundamental. We can’t live without it. And now we’re beginning to understand that this “we” includes many other creatures and societies in our biosphere and even in ourselves.

    Right now we’re hearing two statements being made. One, from the President and his circle: we have to save money even if it costs lives. The other, from the Centers for Disease Control and similar organizations: we have to save lives even if it costs money. Which is more important, money or lives? Money, of course! says capital and its spokespersons. Really? people reply, uncertainly. Seems like that’s maybe going too far? Even if it’s the common wisdom? Or was.
