Her body, once broken, was found perfectly straight and beautiful at her death, a sign of the resurrection glory awaiting us. Father Matt applies this to our daily lives, borrowing an image from the Marian Fathers’ General Superior Fr. By denying our own wills and embracing these daily crosses, we become a community of one heart and mind, praying “Thy will be done” and cooperating with God’s grace to secure our participation  in eternal life.

Joe Roesch, MIC, invites us to reflect on the profound gift of the Holy Spirit and our society’s urgent need for a spiritual renewal. Drawing from the Acts of the Apostles, he reminds us that the early Church faced persecution just as Jesus did. After Sts. Peter and John were released, the community prayed, not for safety, but for boldness. Their prayer was answered with a physical shaking of the place where they were praying, a spiritual earthquake that signaled a fresh outpouring of divine power.

Father Joe drew from the Divine Mercy Sunday homily of the Most Rev. David L. Ricken, bishop of the diocese of Green Bay, who celebrated the Mass at the National Shrine of The Divine Mercy yesterday, to connect this ancient event to our modern reality, describing the rising tide of secularism as a tsunami threatening the faith. In response, we do not need a wall of defense, but a counter-tsunami of mercy. Just as an earthquake under the ocean creates a massive wave, a spiritual earthquake in our hearts can unleash an overwhelming flood of God’s grace. We must ask the Holy Spirit to renew the face of the earth, strengthening us to proclaim the Resurrection despite opposition.

Father Joe  also explored the encounter between Jesus and Nicodemus. Though Nicodemus came to meet Jesus at night, afraid of the light of day and the scrutiny of his contemporaries, he still recognized Jesus as a teacher from God. Father Joe explains that Jesus came to repair the rupture caused by original sin, restoring the harmony between God and humanity that Adam and Eve had lost. Through the Sacrament of Baptism, we are born from above, receiving a second, spiritual birth. This new covenant is maintained through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, which Fr. Joe highlights as a powerful means of healing. He recounted the long lines of penitents awaiting their turn to go to Confession at Eden Hill during Divine Mercy Sunday, witnessing to the tangible joy of God as relationships are restored.

Why didn’t the disciples believe the Resurrection? Not because the evidence wasn’t there — but because their hearts were hardened.
In this homily, Fr. David Gunter, MIC, warns that hardness of heart doesn’t begin with outright rejection of God — it begins with neglect of the relationship with God. When we ignore truth, delay repentance, or drift from the faith, we slowly become resistant to God’s voice … and unable to receive His grace.

People today are often broken, searching, and longing for hope. And often, their first encounter with Christ … is through you.

Don’t neglect so great a duty, and opportunity. 
Stay attentive. Stay faithful. Become mercy.

Jesus no longer walked about in public, hiding behind the veil because the people of God were not spiritually seeing Him. They were still viewing reality with worldly, materialistic eyes. The chief priests and Pharisees feared that if everyone proclaimed Jesus King, the Romans would crush their nation and take away their land. Ironically, they were partially correct; in 70 A.D., the temple was destroyed, and the Jews were dispersed. Yet, Jesus was offering a way out of this fear by establishing not a worldly kingdom, but a spiritual one that would bring true peace by grafting all nations into the Tree of Jesse.

Jesus came to gather the dispersed children of God—not just the Israelites, but all who are predestined for heaven. He established a new Israel, founded not on the twelve tribes of old, but on the twelve Apostles. As seen in Revelation, the walls of the heavenly Jerusalem rest on twelve foundation stones bearing the names of the Apostles. This foundation endures forever. Through the prophet Ezekiel, the Lord promised a new Exodus, gathering His people from all nations to make them one nation with one prince: Christ, the Son of David. He is the one Shepherd for them all.

In the Old Testament, when a king left on a mission, he gave his keys to his steward. Jesus gave the keys to the kingdom of heaven to His steward, Peter, the Rock upon which the Church is built. Peter’s successor, the Pope, and the successors of the Apostles, the bishops, continue to shepherd the faithful. There is to be no division. Never again shall there be two nations or two kingdoms. The Church is one, completely united in the Holy Spirit. Just as a soul animates a body, the Holy Spirit unites the many members of the Church. When members are paralyzed by mortal sin, they hang limply, but they can be cured through repentance and confession.

Despite this divine design, divisions persist. Since the Protestant Reformation, there have been countless splits. In the United States alone, there are over 1,200 denominations; worldwide, estimates exceed 30,000. Each claims the Holy Spirit guides them, yet the Holy Spirit is not a relativist or schizophrenic. He is the bond of love and truth. True unity requires one form of worship, one set of sacraments, one faith, and one government. Diversity is beautiful, but it must not mean division.

We cannot fall into the error of Caiaphas, who viewed things materially. The high priesthood was meant to be for life, yet corruption led to yearly rotations. Jesus wants us to see beyond worldly eyes. He established a new covenant, an everlasting one based on His body and blood. Christ is the new Temple; we are temples of God. God no longer dwells in a geographical location like Jerusalem. The Book of Revelation unveils this new age where God dwells in the Church, the Body of Christ.

We must stay within the boat, the Bark of Peter, as we journey to our promised land. Amidst global division, we must remember Our Lady, who kept her children united just as she formed the Body of Christ in her womb. Saint Maximilian Kolbe taught that if we do not want Mary as our mother, we cannot have Christ as our brother. Saint Cyprian of Carthage added that if we want God as our Father, we must have the Church as our mother. May we remain united as one body, diverse yet one, under the one Shepherd who leads us to our one Father in heaven.

In the past two days, the Gospels have revealed the core reason Jesus was nailed on the Cross: our sins. Historically, this unfolded through the conflict between Jesus and the Jewish leaders, particularly the Pharisees and scribes. Yesterday, Jesus declared, "I am," connecting Himself to God’s self-revelation to Moses as existence itself. Today, He reveals an even deeper truth: the mutual indwelling of the Father and the Son. This Trinitarian revelation speaks of an intimate, interpenetrating life where the Father is in the Son, and the Son is in the Father.

Yet, the most fascinating aspect of this passage is not the historical conflict between Jesus and the Pharisees leading to the Cross, but the internal battle within the hearts of the Pharisees — and within our own hearts. Jesus faces a defense mechanism of denial. The Pharisees do not deny the miracles He performs; they deny what those miracles point to: His divinity. They see the good works, but refuse to trace them back to the divine cause. This denial stems from a threat to their ego.  Jesus, as a greater authority, threatened their status, their livelihood, and their self-perception.

When denial fails, the mind moves to rationalization. The Pharisees found a legal reason to reject Jesus: apparent blasphemy. They claimed He was a mere man making Himself equal to God, a crime punishable by death. This is the intellect serving the will to avoid an unwanted reality. hen we do not desire a truth to be real, our will moves our intellect to find a reason to reject it. The Pharisees rationalized their rejection to protect their pride.

Next comes projection. The Pharisees took their own internal chaos — pride, resistance, and anger — and projected it onto Jesus. They called Him a blasphemer, transferring their own spiritual blindness onto Him. This is the dynamic of looking at the speck in another’s eye while ignoring the beam in one’s own. By externalizing their internal demons, they could fight an external enemy rather than face their own brokenness. They converted shame into righteous anger, convincing themselves they were right while Jesus was wrong.

Finally, we see the modern phenomenon of gaslighting. The Pharisees did not just deny the truth; they tried to make Jesus doubt His own reality. They accused Him of casting out demons by the power of the devil. Gaslighting is not just refusing to see the truth; it is insisting that the one who sees the truth is crazy, unstable, or mistaken. They tried to reshape reality so that Jesus’ miracles were demonic acts. This is a desperate attempt to avoid the shame of facing the truth about oneself.

Why does this matter? Because we all carry these defense mechanisms. We are wired to protect our ego, but these mechanisms become exaggerated problems if we remain trapped in them. God became man and died on the Cross to help us cope with our sinful, imperfect souls. We need a healthy image of God — not as a tyrant, but as a source of unconditional mercy. The Divine Mercy Image shows us that God is good and seeks only to heal and restore.

This truth gives us the courage to stand spiritually naked before God. We can admit, “Lord, I am a hot mess. I have this problem.” We can submit humbly, knowing God wants to help. We must not get caught in the snare of living like Pharisees. Consider the phrase “my body, my choice” regarding abortion. It is a powerful rationalization that turns the focus of the conversation away from the child and the reality of the situation, justifying an evil by framing it as a right. It is a defense mechanism to avoid the pain of facing the truth.

"You will be my people, and I will be your God." This powerful declaration echoes down through the ages, defining the particular source  of God's renewed and redeemed relationship with humanity. It is a covenant of fidelity and everlasting love that the Lord enters into with each of us personally through the grace to have supernatural faith and through the Sacraments. Today, we reflect on this binding promise, starting with the saints honored in our liturgical calendar: Saint Margaret Clitherow, Saint Mathias and companions, and the martyrs of Alexandria. Though unknown to many, they were known perfectly to God, clinging to this covenant until their last breath.

Covenant language is found in the story of Abraham, our father in faith. In the first reading, God changes Abram's name to Abraham, meaning “father of a multitude,” signaling a new identity and mission. This covenant was sealed through the terrifying test known as the akedah, the binding of Isaac. Abraham, willing to sacrifice his beloved son, demonstrated a faith that trusted God even when the fulfillment of the promise seemed impossible. He believed that God could raise the dead, a foreshadowing of the resurrection.

This ancient binding finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ. In the Gospel of John, Jesus reveals His divine identity to the Jews, declaring, “Before Abraham came to be, I AM." He claims the divine name, asserting His unity with the Father. The Jews understood this claim as blasphemy and sought to stone Him, yet the Lord was simply telling the truth. Through the Incarnation, Jesus reveals the true nature of the covenant. Just as Abraham bound his son Isaac to the wood of the altar, so too did God the Father permit His only begotten Son to be nailed to the wood of the Cross.

This time, the weapon was not withheld. The sacrifice was completed. God poured out the blood of His Son so that we might have eternal life. This is the final covenant, the New and Eternal Covenant established in Christ. It is not limited to a single nation but extends to every tribe, tongue, and nation. The Catholic Church is the kingdom of Heaven established through this covenantal love, where God binds Himself to us in the Eucharist. Every Mass is a renewal of this bond, where we consume the Body of Christ and become one with Him.

The question remains: Do we remember this covenant? Do we recall the vows made at our baptism and confirmation? Sin is essentially forgetting this covenant and acting as though it does not exist, turning to idols instead of to the living God. When we stray, we are called to return to fidelity through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, renewing our love and recommitting to the binding promise. Like the many obscure saints who, though in Heaven, are not canonized or commemorated save on All Saints Day each year, we may not be famous, but if we remain faithful, we are known to God.

Death appears to be the ultimate end for many, yet Jesus reveals a deeper truth that transforms our entire perspective on mortality. In the Gospel of John, we witness the raising of Lazarus, a powerful sign that death is not final for those who believe. Jesus declares Himself as the resurrection and the life, promising that whoever believes in Him will never truly die. This is not merely spiritual metaphor but eternal reality for the baptized Christian.

Yet Jesus wept at the tomb of Lazarus, showing His profound compassion for human suffering. He understands our grief because He entered into it fully on the cross, carrying every cross we bear. The shortest verse in Scripture reveals the depth of Christ's humanity and His solidarity with those who mourn. However, the Lord weeps most deeply not over physical death, but over spiritual death—the loss of the soul through mortal sin.

At Baptism, we were raised like Lazarus from spiritual death to new life in Christ. We became temples of God, filled with divine life. But when we commit grave sin with full knowledge and deliberate consent, we become spiritually dead again, like the dry bones Ezekiel saw in the field. The tragedy is not that we cannot return, but that we choose to remain bound by sin when Christ offers liberation.

The Sacrament of Penance was instituted on Easter Sunday as a sign of this ongoing resurrection. Through Confession, we are untied from the bonds of Satan, sin, and death. Saint Augustine taught that the recreation of our souls through redemption is more majestic than the creation of the universe itself. Every confession is a personal resurrection, a chance to rise again in the Spirit of God.

During Lent, the Church enters into a liturgical dying. The Alleluia is buried, flowers are removed, and statues are veiled. On Good Friday, even the Mass is taken from us. Yet from this complete emptiness, life shines through in Christ's Resurrection. We must enter this dying to self through penance, prayer, fasting, and the Sacraments to share in His glory.

The “Catechism of the Catholic Church” reminds us that the Church will enter the kingdom only through this final Passover, following her Lord in death and resurrection. Before Christ's Second Coming, the Church must pass through trials that will shake the faith of many. We see confusion and scattering in our time, yet we must not let our faith be shaken. Like Lazarus, even when all seems lost, we can always have hope for resurrection.

Why does the Church cover the crucifix with a veil during Passiontide, just as we draw closer to Good Friday? It seems almost backward. Shouldn’t we be looking more at the Cross, not less? But in her wisdom, the Church teaches us to long for what we so often take for granted.

By covering the crucifix, we begin to feel its absence. And when it is finally unveiled on Good Friday, slowly and deliberately, we encounter again — almost as if for the first time — the shocking reality of Christ’s sacrifice. The Cross is not just a symbol. It is the very key to our salvation. As Scripture says, “by His wounds we are healed.”

The Cross is not an obstacle to Heaven — it is the obstacle to hell. It is the ladder by which we rise, just as Moses lifted up the bronze serpent so that those who looked upon it in faith might live. In the same way, when we look upon Christ crucified with faith, we acknowledge our sin and trust in His power to save.

This is why sacramentals like the crucifix matter. Not as superstition, but as a means to dispose our hearts to grace. When you look at the crucifix, you are not just seeing Christ—you are being seen by Him. His gaze meets yours. His love is personal.

If you wonder where God is in your suffering, look at the crucifix. If you wonder how much He loves you, look at the crucifix. If you want to understand your worth, your redemption, your path to Heaven — look at the crucifix.

This Lent, don’t just pass by it. Stop. Look. Remain. Because the more you behold the Cross, the more you will understand love — and learn how to live it.

Father David Gunter, MIC, explains that throughout salvation history, the pattern of spiritual combat remains remarkably consistent. The Book of Daniel addresses the difficulties of being a faithful Jew during the Babylonian exile, containing apocalyptic literature that arises when God's holy people suffer severe religious or political oppression. The story of Susanna reveals corrupt leadership in two elders who were shameless womanizers, abusing their position of authority for their own wicked desires. Yet God vindicates the faithful.

This same dynamic appears in the Gospel reading where corrupt chief priests and Pharisees use a woman caught in adultery to advance their own wicked agenda. They wanted to discredit Jesus, hoping to incriminate Him if He orders her stoning. Throughout the Bible, the lesson repeats: The battle is always between good and evil, holiness versus godlessness, sanctity and sin. As Proverbs teaches, when the wicked are in authority, transgression increases, but the righteous will look upon their downfall.

Despite all that Jesus has done through His death and resurrection, we still see the same kind of evil and corruption in the world. It is a constant abuse of authority that causes tremendous harm. Saint Paul writes about authority in Second Corinthians, stating it is given for building up, not for tearing down. The evil one wants to tear down everything, causing division, fostering hatred, fear, and violence. He tempts and corrupts people in authority to accomplish his works of destruction.

On the other hand, the work of the Holy Spirit fosters unity, peace, and love. We have been given the Holy Spirit and can experience His peace in our hearts despite all the horrors in the world. We have modern-day Pharisees who believe themselves to be the spiritual elite. Whenever heresy or error is being taught, we must speak up and defend our Catholic faith.

The turmoil in the world is unprecedented. We are witnesses of the strife and suffering of nation against nation, famine, and chaos. 

But God is always with us. He hears our prayers. If we remain faithful, He will be faithful. The Book of Revelation speaks of the beast making war on the saints, but authority was given to us to tread upon serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy. This is apocalyptic language describing a spiritual battle where we have authority as children of God over the spirits that come against us because we have the power of the Lord Jesus and His name with us.

We must pray for the gift of discernment, for all the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and especially pray the Rosary to let our Heavenly Mother guide us in this spiritual battle.

As we journey through Lent toward Holy Week, the Gospel presents a decisive question to every heart: What do you think of Jesus Christ? The guards sent to arrest Him returned empty-handed, mesmerized by His words. Their testimony remains striking: Never before has anyone spoken like this man.

This truth divides humanity even today. Some recognize Jesus as the Prophet foretold by Moses, the one who speaks God's definitive word. Others acknowledge Him as the Christ, though their understanding is often clouded by incomplete knowledge. Still others reject Him outright, driven by pride or a desire to maintain their own power.

The religious leaders of the time, tasked with guiding people toward God, found themselves opposing the very source of salvation. They sought to silence truth because it threatened their authority. Yet we find hope in Nicodemus, a ruling council member who dared to speak for justice. His humility and openness to God's Word led to ridicule, yet he remained a witness to the light.

Jesus warned He came not to bring peace, but a sword, dividing those who accept truth from those who reject it. Each person must ultimately retreat to their own heart to make a choice for or against Christ. There is no middle ground before eternal truth.

If we reject the Word of Christ, we cut ourselves off from life. But if we believe with living faith that translates into action, eternal life dwells within us even now. As St. Faustina taught, the Lord loves a soul that acts on His words. This faith produces the fruits of the Holy Spirit: joy, peace, patience, kindness.

In the Eucharist, we encounter God's heart fully present. Here, in the quiet of our hearts, we are invited to make the same choice the guards, the crowd, and the leaders faced. Let go of pride and self-reliance. Confess, repent, and declare belief that Jesus alone has the words of eternal life. Like Peter, we must ask: Lord, to whom shall we go? For only He has the words of eternal life.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus goes up to Jerusalem for the Feast of Tabernacles in secret. The Jews were already plotting to kill Him, yet His hour had not yet come. This is the profound truth of this passage: Human plans cannot override divine timing.

Father Mark Baron, MIC, reflects on this mystery, exploring the Feast of Tabernacles and its significance. This ancient feast celebrated the end of the harvest and recalled Israel's time in the wilderness, when God provided water and food while they dwelt in tents. It was a feast of thanksgiving and trust.

Jesus went to this feast knowing the authorities sought His life. Yet He declared that His hour had not yet come. The death of Jesus does not ultimately happen because of a human plan. It is part of a divine plan. Jesus recognizes He is from God, the Son of God, sent by the Father to lay down His life for our sins, and so He also knows that this is not the time for His Passion and death.

A keen sense of Divine Providence, of the times and seasons for the plans and purposes of God, is crucial for Lent. The season is not only about seeking purification from sin. It is also about preparing to celebrate the Paschal Mystery — the Passion, death, and Resurrection of Jesus. We prepare ourselves to celebrate those events that constitute the hour of Jesus.

In the first part of Lent, we read about prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Now we enter a time of readings that speak of how Jesus was led to death. We read about His conflict with religious leadership, whose way of life revolved around the Temple and a form of worship that God had established. Jesus came to fulfill that system.

Jesus says He goes to the Cross freely. He lays down His life voluntarily. He chooses when He dies. The Father has planned this from all eternity. Human beings are instruments in this divine drama — some as instruments of death, some as instruments of faithfulness.

Just as Jesus' name was on everyone's lips then, the name of Jesus is spoken widely today. But speaking about Jesus does not always mean we understand Him correctly. We must confess Christ is King — a statement of faith, not a political slogan. We cannot be afraid to use that phrase.

Man does not determine the second coming of Christ. We do not force God's hand. It is always God's hour, always according to God's plan. Human plans can’t control or “correct” divine timing.

Christ is King because He reigns from the Cross, crowned with thorns, acknowledged as King of the Jews by the Roman Empire through Pontius Pilate’s sign posted above His head. Today we ponder some of the events that led Him to that moment where He is lifted up from the earth, conquering the works of the devil, so our hearts can truly be ruled by Jesus.

Happy St. Joseph's Day! Five years ago marked a historic milestone — the Church's first year ever dedicated to St. Joseph. This is no accident. Though St. Joseph was humbly hidden, he played the most significant role after the Blessed Virgin Mary in assisting Christ's plan of redemption. After Mary, he remains the most significant figure in Christ's plan of salvation for all people.

Father Matthew Tomeny, MIC, reflects on this profound truth, exploring how devotion to St. Joseph has grown organically over time, rather like the Church has grown in her devotion to and understanding of the Eucharist. In the last 150 years, the Holy Spirit has moved the Church to develop her teaching about and devotion to St. Joseph. Since the Holy Father’s declaration of St, Joseph as universal patron of the Church in 1870, we have seen encyclicals, religious orders, and shrines dedicated to him. Pope Leo XIII dedicated March to Saint Joseph. In 1955, the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker was added to the calendar. In the 1962 revision of the Roman Missal, St. Joseph was inserted into the Roman Canon. In 2013, Pope Francis added St. Joseph to the rest of the Eucharistic Prayers, as well.

Pope Francis also declared a Year of Saint Joseph from Dec. 8, 2020 through Dec. 8, 2021, and consecration to him has grown rapidly. As our Lord tells us in the “Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska,” God is preparing us for His second coming, giving us the Day of Mercy before the Day of Judgment. With this will come the triumph of the Immaculate Heart, joined to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

We are living in a time of moral and spiritual famine. The Church must go to St. Joseph, just as Israel went to Joseph in times of famine. Saint Joseph protects the Church from real attacks threatening destruction. During the Holy Family's exile in Egypt, it must have been tempting to think Jesus was not the Messiah. Similarly, when attacks on the Church grow and teachings seem shrouded in darkness, St. Joseph will be there to protect, nourish, and guide us.

Saint Joseph is the father of the Mystical Body of Christ. He spiritually feeds, shelters, clothes, educates, protects, and corrects us. Where the St. Joseph Oratory in Montreal, in Canada, stands today, St. Br. Andre attributed countless miracles to St. Joseph's intercession. In our day, Jesus wants the Church to know, love, honor, and seek refuge in St. Joseph.

With such poor examples of fatherhood in the world, we desperately need him as a perfect model of paternal love — an earthly icon of God the Father. Saint Joseph is higher than all the patriarchs, higher than all the saints of the New Testament. Unlike St. Peter and St. Paul, he never denied or persecuted Jesus. He is the only one who can say he saved Jesus — the savior of his Savior.

May St. Joseph continue to protect the Church and intercede for us to have purity of mind and heart so that, through Mary, Jesus may dwell in the home of our hearts.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus makes a startling declaration: "My Father is at work until now, so I am at work." To the Jewish authorities, this was blasphemy. They understood exactly what He was claiming — equality with God. Yet this is the heart of the Christian faith: Jesus is not merely a teacher or prophet. He is the Son, united with the Father and the Holy Spirit.

Father Chris Alar, MIC, reflects on this profound passage, exploring what it means that God never stopped working. The Father rests on the seventh day of creation, yet He continues to sustain all things, to give life, to guide history. Jesus shares in this divine activity. He gives life to whom He wishes. He exercises judgment. He calls all who hear His voice to pass from death to life.

Eternal life is not merely a future hope. Jesus says whoever believes "has eternal life" in the present tense. It begins now, in the moment we truly hear Christ in Scripture, in prayer, in the quiet of adoration. The Mass unites the earthly realm with the heavenly, offering a foretaste of the wedding feast of the Lamb.

Yet Jesus also speaks of a future resurrection. Those who have done good deeds will rise to life; those who have done wicked deeds, to condemnation. This does not contradict the finished work of the Cross. Christ redeemed us, but we must cooperate with grace through our choices. Our actions matter. Our lives should reflect that we have passed from death to life.

John's Gospel is deep, often soaring above the others like an eagle. Tradition holds that John learned directly from the Blessed Mother, receiving a heavenly perspective on Christ's life and mission. To know the Son, we must know the Holy Spirit. To know the Holy Spirit, we turn to Mary, the Spouse of the Spirit, who embodies all the virtues He produces.

She introduces us to sanctity. The Holy Spirit reveals the Son. The Son redeems us and brings us back to the Father. This is the objective of our lives: to return to God the Father, to know Him, love Him, serve Him, and be happy with Him forever in Heaven.

In life, we rely on signs to navigate our world. They tell us where we are, how far we must travel, and which direction to take. Without them, we are lost. God, too, uses signs of a different sort to guide us, some written, some unwritten, revealing His presence and power in ways that transcend the ordinary. Saint Patrick, whose liturgical feast we celebrate today, famously used the shamrock, a simple three-petaled leaf, to shed light on the mystery of the Holy Trinity — one God in three Persons. 

During Lent, we are called to examine our lives, recognize our sins, and convert in an annual course correction. Yet there is a danger in remaining excessively fixated on our own misery. If we only look inward, we risk despair. True Lenten conversion requires shifting our gaze from our own failures to the infinite mercy of Christ. As the “Diary” of St. Faustina reminds us, Jesus speaks constantly of our misery, but also of His mercy. The goal of the Christian life is not to wallow in self-recrimination, but to trust in Divine Mercy. We must take our eyes off our own brokenness and fix them on the One who heals.

In the Gospel, Jesus performs a sign at the Pool of Bethesda. For 38 years, a man lay lame, waiting for the water to stir, hoping to be the first to enter and be healed. It was a desperate race, a competition for a cure. But Jesus does not ask him to compete. He does not tell him to run faster. Instead, He speaks a word of power: "Rise, take up your mat and walk." The man is instantly healed. He does not need the pool; he needs the Person of Jesus.

This miracle is one of the great signs in the Gospel of John. Scholars often count seven signs, symbolizing perfection, but some argue for an eighth, representing the new creation and eternity. The signs escalate in power: from changing water to wine, to healing the sick, to raising the dead. Each sign points to a greater reality: Jesus is the Light of the World, the Bread of Life, and the Resurrection. The ultimate sign is the Cross and the Resurrection, where Jesus conquers sin and death forever.

Yet, signs divide. Some accept them and believe; others reject them, clinging to legalism rather than grace. The religious leaders of the time were angry not because a man was healed, but because it happened on the Sabbath. They valued their rules over the miracle of life. They were spiritually blind to the presence of God right in front of them. This is the warning for us today. When we see the signs of God's mercy, do we rejoice, or do we find reasons to doubt?

Jesus tells the healed man, "Do not sin any more, so that nothing worse may happen to you." This connects physical healing with spiritual restoration. God desires to heal our souls first, for a healed body means little if the soul remains dead in sin. But once the soul is alive, the body follows. The man who was lame for decades walked away, likely dancing with joy, carrying his mat as a testament to the power of Christ.

Let us not be like the Pharisees, blinded by our own expectations. Let us be like the man at the pool, ready to rise when Jesus speaks. Let us embrace the signs He gives us, trusting that He is the source of all hope. Whether through the simplicity of a shamrock, the mystery of the Trinity, or the profound mercy shown to the broken, God is speaking. Will we listen? Will we believe?

In the Gospel, Jesus performs the miraculous sign of healing a man born blind, revealing His divine power through supernatural manifestations. Yet even as He demonstrates His identity as God Himself, some Pharisees question His authority, trapped in spiritual blindness despite the divine presence before them.

This spiritual blindness persists throughout the centuries. People can stand before the supernatural, the divine, the miraculous — and still doubt. They may see the power of heaven working through prayer, through sacraments, through the intercession of Our Lady, yet choose to reduce it to something lesser.

Consider the intellectual arrogance of the Pharisees. They questioned the man who was healed, demanding answers. When he spoke simply—"He is a prophet"—they cast him out, claiming he was born in sin. Their pride prevented them from seeing the truth.

God often chooses the humble, the small, the unexpected. David was the youngest son, the least likely to be king. Moses hesitated, claiming he could not speak. Jeremiah resisted, feeling inadequate. Yet God took their smallness and made it a vessel for His grace.

Saint John Vianney struggled with Latin in seminary. His classmates doubted him. But the bishop asked: Does he pray? Does he love Our Lady? The answer was yes. And the Lord worked wonders through this man of holy simplicity.

This is how the Lord works. What the world values as important is not as important as the holy simplicity of one who desires intimacy with God. David was known as the man after God's own heart—not because he was perfect, but because he had sincerity of heart that kept returning to the Lord.

Let us never succumb to spiritual blindness. Let us always see the beautiful presence of God in His miracles and wonders. When Jesus shines in this world, it is often through holy simplicity that leads us to a relationship with God truer than anything of the intellectual realm can bring.

Father Anthony Gramlich, MIC, teaches that the Lenten journey begins with prayer, the foundation for all spiritual growth. Prayer is conversation with God, opening the heart to the Lord. Even five seconds to make the Sign of the Cross and offer thanks is sufficient. Time is the greatest gift God gives, and there is no excuse for neglecting prayer.

Father Anthony distinguishes between quantity and quality of prayer. One prayer from the heart surpasses many from the lips. The Holy Spirit guides authentic prayer, praying through and with believers. Before praying, invoke the Holy Spirit to overcome distraction and focus the mind.

Jesus presents two examples of prayer in the Gospel. The Pharisee represents how NOT TO pray. Though knowledgeable of the 613 commandments and scrupulous in observance, his prayer centered on himself. He thanked God he was not like others — greedy, dishonest, adulterers. His fasting, almsgiving, and prayer led to pride and judgment of others. Success in Lenten practices can breed arrogance if the heart remains unexamined.

The tax collector exemplifies how TO pray. Ostracized by society for collaborating with Rome and enriching himself, he stood at a distance, eyes downcast, beating his breast. His prayer was simple: "O God, be merciful to me, a sinner." Directed toward God rather than himself, it embodied humility. He acknowledged his creature-hood, confessed his sinfulness, and pleaded for mercy.

Father Anthony notes this prayer appears at Mass's beginning and before Holy Communion. We call on the Lamb of God, acknowledging unworthiness. God makes us worthy, not ourselves. Two groups fail to pray properly: those claiming no sin, blinded by pride, and those fearing God's justice without trusting His mercy.

The tax collector recognized his sin yet trusted God's unlimited mercy. Jesus declared him justified. The moral proverb applies: everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted. Lent's purpose is humility. Whether succeeding or failing in Lenten practices, all roads lead to the cross.

Salvation comes through Jesus on the cross, not human effort. Only at the foot of the cross, humbled like Mary and the disciples, do we find salvation. The resurrection follows the cross. The seed must die in the ground to rise. Lent takes believers through darkness and cold to the tomb with Christ, so they may rise with Him on the third day.

Father Chris Alar, MIC, explains that the Ten Commandments form the moral foundation of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, rooted in natural law written on every human heart. The first three commandments shed light on how we should be loving God, while the remaining seven explain loving neighbor. Jesus summarized this dual commandment: Love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself.

Father Chris clarifies common misconceptions about how Catholics number the commandments. Catholics follow the tradition of St. Augustine, while Protestants follow the Greek Fathers. Though numbered differently, the substance remains identical. The prohibition against graven images falls under the first commandment for Catholics, and is not treated as a separate second commandment.

Father Chris highlights how Jesus transformed the commandment to love neighbor. In Leviticus, the context referred only to fellow Jews. Jesus removed all boundaries, declaring that religion consists of loving God and all people. Mercy emerges when these two commandments come together : loving the unlovable, forgiving the unforgivable — loving as God loves, and loving those whom God loves.

Temptation comes from three sources: the world, the flesh, and the devil. Not every temptation originates from the devil, and using him as a scapegoat is unhealthy. A strong spiritual life — daily prayer, frequent well-prepared reception of the Eucharist, spiritual reading, and custody of the senses — cultivates an interior life within a spiritual fortress that weakens concupiscence (the tendency of our fallen human nature toward sin).

Rather than reciting prayers solely at day's end, believers should pray throughout the day. Invoking the sacred names of Jesus and Mary invites their presence. The final words of saints often include these names, showing intimacy with our Lord and Our Lady. Nothing should be done without them.

Father Chris Alar, MIC, addresses a common misconception: that the Old Testament portrays God as harsh while, in contradiction, the New Testament reveals a loving Jesus. He explains that the Old Testament functions like parental guidance for children — setting boundaries to protect us — while the New Testament calls adults to a higher standard of love and self‑discipline. Jesus stated He came not to abolish the law but to fulfill it, completing the dietary and ritual requirements through His self-sacrifice on the Cross.

Father Chris clarifies that Christians are no longer bound by Old Testament rules on diet, circumcision, or animal sacrifices, yet the fundamental moral law remains unchanged. The Council of Jerusalem confirmed that Gentile converts must uphold even counter-cultural moral teachings while being freed from ceremonial obligations. This distinction guards against both legalism and license: freedom from ritual law does not mean freedom from moral responsibility.

Father Chris emphasizes that Jesus elevated moral standards to a supernatural level, a level that demands grace building on natural virtue, teaching that anger equates to murder and lust to adultery. Even when we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.

Father David draws a parallel between the ancient exile and our current times, where idolatry and paganism are rising again. Yet, the message is one of hope: God never changes. Citing the witness of the late EWTN show host and retreat leader Anna Maria Schmidt, who found hope amidst the rubble of World War II, Fr. David challenges us to ask if we truly believe the Father cares for us even when everything seems lost. The answer is a resounding yes. God is the only reality, and He looks after each of us at every moment.

He emphasizes that our inheritance is not darkness, but the freedom and strength given through the Holy Spirit. He urges us to pray for inner strength so that Christ may dwell in our hearts. In a world that often feels like a perpetual dark moment, we are called to have the same confidence Daniel had: that God is still with His people, and will deliver them by His wonders.

Father Matthew Tomeny, MIC, opens with a memorable story from Venerable Archbishop Fulton Sheen, who once welcomed a drunk woman into Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City. Rather than turning her away, he offered her tea and promised not to ask her to go to confession — until she returned sober and ready to encounter God’s mercy.

Father Matthew connects this to the Scripture reading of Naaman the leper, who expected an extraordinary cure but was healed by the simple act of dipping seven times in the Jordan River. Salvation does not require grand quests or heroic feats. Instead, the Sacraments of the Church provide the ordinary means by which God cleanses our souls and restores our union with Him.

Through Baptism, Jesus washes away our sins. Through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, He continues to cleanse us when we fall. In the longest dialogue of the Gospel of John, Christ breaks every barrier of gender, ethnicity, and past sin, offering “living water” that points to the Sacrament of Baptism.

The older brother, representing those who cling to legalism, reacts with anger and jealousy. He cannot see that the father’s love is not a limited resource; it expands to encompass both sons. The father gently corrects him, declaring that everything he has is also the older son’s, but that a lost son has been found. This dialogue invites us to examine our own hearts: Are we the resentful elder, measuring God’s love by our own merit, or the wayward child humbled by hunger for divine grace?

Like the prodigal, we are invited to return, even with impure motives, because the Father’s compassion does not require perfect intention — only a willingness to come home. The sacramental life — Baptism, the Eucharist, Confession — provides the water that washes away the mud of our sins, renewing us as beloved children of God.

May the Blessed Virgin intercede that we, whether prodigal or faithful, open our hearts to the Father’s boundless mercy, allowing His love to transform our lives and to bear fruit that glorifies Him.

Father Mark Baron, MIC, invites us to ask the vital question that unites today’s readings and the responsorial psalm: Where is your heart rooted? Isaiah portrays the faithful believer as a tree planted beside flowing waters, its roots drawing nourishment so that it remains green even in drought. In contrast, a heart that trusts in flesh becomes a barren bush, exposed to the scorching heat and light of the desert.

The theme of trust pervades the Divine Mercy revelations of St. Faustina. To trust someone, we must recognize three qualities: the ability to help; the wisdom to guide; and the goodness that cares. Father Mark likens this to a physician — trained, wise, and compassionate — who earns our confidence. In the same way, God is all‑powerful, all‑wise, and all‑good; recognizing these attributes allows us to lean on Him, opening our hearts to His mercy.

Trust in God is not merely abstract; it finds concrete expression in the Sacraments. Baptism immerses us in the living water promised by Scripture, initiating us into the grace that sustains our spiritual growth. The Eucharist continually refreshes that same water, while the Sacrament of Reconciliation clears the soil of our hearts so new roots may take hold.

During this Lenten season, Fr. Mark urges us to examine our own roots. Are we seeking security in material success, as the rich man of the parable did, or are we planting ourselves beside the divine stream, like Lazarus whose name means “God has helped”? He calls us to pray for the Holy Spirit to reveal the blind spots that keep us from true reliance on the Father.

Father Tyler Mentzer, MIC, invites us to contemplate what it truly means to “reign with Christ.” He opens with a striking analogy: a modern “geodome” that creates a flawless, wind‑less environment for trees. In that artificial sanctuary, the trees flourish at first, but their roots remain shallow. Without needing to withstand the wind, the trees become top‑heavy. Their fragile roots cannot anchor them, and they eventually topple.

Father Tyler draws a parallel between those fragile trees and a life that lacks adversity. When we seek a perfect, trouble‑free existence, we attempt to eliminate the “wind” that deepens and strengthens our spiritual roots. The Gospel warns us that greatness in the Kingdom is measured, not by position, but by humble service. Jesus tells the disciples that the first shall be the greatest only when he becomes everyone else’s servant.

Father Tyler reminds us that the very trials Jesus endured — 40 days in the desert; the temptations of Satan; the agony of the Cross — were the winds that proved His unshakable love for the Father. Likewise, the request of James and John to sit at Christ’s right and left reveals a self‑inflated desire for power. In our own lives, the “wind” can be professional setbacks, relational conflicts, or the quiet suffering of daily duties. When we meet these challenges with faith, we are compelled to deepen our roots in the Father’s love, allowing the Holy Spirit to strengthen us from within. The Sacraments — especially Confession, Baptism, and the Eucharist — provide the nourishment that sustains us through the storm, reminding us that we are already participants in Christ’s reign when we serve selflessly.

Father Tyler urges us to ask: Do I seek the comfort of a wind‑less dome, or do I welcome the gusts that shape my character? By choosing to serve, to love, and to sacrifice, we already reign with Christ, even if the world does not notice. At the final judgment, the Church teaches that we will be judged by the depth of our love of God and neigbor—; that is, by how far we have sunk our roots into the Father’s boundless mercy.

Father Matthew Tomeny, MIC, reminds us that true love begins with God and flows outward to every human soul. He explains that those who love themselves more than God impose heavy burdens on those around them, while those who love God above all seek to lift the weight from others. In this spirit, St. Katharine Drexel, born into immense wealth in 1858, chose to see the world through God’s eyes.

Educated by devout parents, she inherited more than $7 million — a fortune that would equal hundreds of millions today. Yet she recognized that money was not as valuable as the good works it could perform.. Guided by the prophetic call “wash yourselves clean … make justice your aim,” she turned her inheritance into works of mercy for orphans, widows, African‑American families, and the Native‑American peoples.

She requested missionaries for Wyoming from the Holy See, and the Pope’s reply — “why don’t you become a missionary?” — sparked a radical conversion. She surrendered her fortune, prompting headlines that read “Drexel Gives Up $7 Million.” From that surrender sprang 51convents, 60schools, and 145 missions across the United States, including Xavier University, the first historically Black Catholic university.

For St. Katharine, the Eucharist was the living source of every act of charity. She taught that when we behold Christ hidden in the Sacrament, we also see Him hidden in each person we serve. The humble sacrifice of the Mass empowers us to love without selfish gain, inspiring and enabling her own life of self‑offering.

Father Chris Alar, MIC, reminds us that Jesus’ warning, “Judge not, lest you be judged” applies to condemning persons, not discerning sin. He explains that while an act may be objectively grave — abortion, theft, or any violation of God’s moral law — we often lack full knowledge of the person’s heart and circumstances, so we must address the action, not label the individual.

Father Chris warns against the cultural tide of relativism that blurs objective truth. He points to the Equality Act, describing it as a legislative effort that would force churches, schools, and hospitals to abandon the Church’s teaching on marriage, gender, and the sanctity of life. He calls this “a wolf in sheep’s clothing,” urging believers to stand firm on the truth revealed by Scripture and the Magisterium.

Balancing mercy with truth, he cites Augustine: “Love the sinner, hate the sin.” True mercy involves lovingly correcting the errant behavior that endangers souls, not excusing it. He stresses that the Church’s works of mercy include admonishing sinners, protecting the vulnerable, and upholding the dignity of every human person while defending the objective moral order.

He cites G.K. Chesterton’s insight that love becomes a virtue only when it embraces the unlovable. Father Matthew stresses that loving those who love us yields no spiritual reward; the real treasure lies in loving those who have nothing good to give us. Drawing on Aquinas, Father Tomeny explains that love is the willing of the other’s good, not a feeling of fondness. He challenges listeners to ask themselves whether they truly love their enemies or merely love the good that can be obtained through them.

To illustrate sacrificial love, he recounts the story of Monsignor Flannery, an Irish priest who, during the Nazi occupation of Rome, built a network of safe houses that saved countless Jews. After the war, the very Gestapo officer whose life he had saved—Colonel Kepler—sought Flannery’s help for his own family. Flannery’s unconditional love led him to aid the former enemy, ultimately guiding Kepler to baptism fifteen years later. This transformation demonstrates how love of the enemy can soften hardened hearts and draw even the most sinful toward God.

Father  Matthew warns against the temptation to seek vengeance, noting that true heroism is not the triumph over evil but the willingness to lay down one’s own safety for the good of the other, receiving nothing in return. He reminds us that God’s love is given freely, without expectation, and that we are called to mirror this divine generosity. While setting healthy boundaries is permissible, the ultimate goal is to love in a way that reveals God’s mercy to the enemy, breaking cycles of hatred and inviting conversion.

He concludes with a prayerful invitation: may the Blessed Virgin intercede for us so that, like Christ and the saints, we may love our enemies out of love for God, allowing His mercy to flow through us to a world desperate for healing. May we each ask for the grace to love without condition, trusting that such love reflects the very heart of the Father.

By praying to the Blessed Virgin for the strength to forgive, she moved beyond mere forgiveness into true reconciliation—a mercy that restores, not merely releases.

Father Chris emphasizes that the Church calls us to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, not simply the Sacrament of Forgiveness. In that Sacrament, God does not turn us away after we are absolved; He draws us back into communion with Himself. Mercy, therefore, surpasses forgiveness: it heals the wound and rebuilds the broken relationship.

Father Chis warns against “false mercy” that ignores accountability. Justice and correction, offered in love, are themselves works of mercy. We are invited to confront wrongdoing, seek restitution, and yet pray for the grace to forgive, following Christ’s example.

Father  Daniel  Klimek, PhD, challenges us to let the Golden Rule become the litmus test of every relationship. In the demonic community, power is exercised through control, abuse and isolation, with stronger demons exploiting the weaker. The angelic community, by contrast, models generosity: The seraphim, nearest to God, receive the deepest experience of divine love and willingly transmit that love to the lower angelic and saintly orders, fostering communion rather than division.

Father Daniel invites us to examine our own interactions. Do we, consciously or unconsciously, impose control, emotional abuse, or isolation on others or ourselves? He urges a radical empathy that goes beyond polite respect, asking us to mentally inhabit the other person’s suffering, poverty, and woundedness. Such empathy opens the path to forgiveness, because we begin to see our hurt, not as merely an affront to our ego, but as the consequence of another soul bruised by pain.

Viewing others through “supernatural eyes,” as Fr. Daniel puts it, means recognizing the inherent human dignity both of ourselves and of our neighbors. 

Father Chris  Alar, MIC, invites us to reconsider the Genesis story in light of both tradition and modern discoveries. He notes that scientific genealogy now points to a single ancestral woman, reinforcing the plausibility that Adam and Eve were actual historical persons. He stresses that the biblical account employs symbolic language to convey theological truth, not to serve as a scientific textbook. The garden, he explains, symbolizes the state of grace—a divine communion that humanity originally shared with the Father. By locating the entrance of Eden to the east, the ancient tradition connects the garden with the tabernacle and the Holy of Holies, the most sacred space where God dwelt among his people.

Father Chris distinguishes the two creation narratives, showing that one offers a chronological outline while the other provides a vivid visual metaphor of God shaping man from the earth. He reiterates that humanity is a unique composite of matter and spirit, endowed with a rational, immortal soul that separates us from animals. The episode of the tree of knowledge, according to Fr. Chris, is less about acquiring moral awareness and more about the tragic attempt to seize God’s legal authority over good and evil—a theme that mirrors contemporary attempts to legislate morality.

Father Chris also links the garden imagery to the Church’s Sacramental life, describing the tabernacle as a miniature Eden where the Holy of Holies resides. He reminds listeners that the Sacraments are the ordinary channels through which God continues to offer the grace first granted in Eden. Father Mark also addresses a common misunderstanding: that repetitive prayer is “babbling.” He notes that Scripture itself contains beautiful repetitions (e.g., the Psalms) and that Jesus Himself prayed repetitively the night before His Passion, demonstrating that sustained, heartfelt prayer deepens faith. Likewise, contemporary worship songs often repeat refrains to embed truth in the heart.

Father Chris  Alar, MIC reminds us that works do not earn salvation; only God’s grace saves (CCC, 1987). Yet the Church teaches that we must co‑operate with that grace. As Fr. Chris explains, each soul faces a particular judgment at death, meeting Christ in His human nature, and later a general judgment when Christ returns to judge all humanity (see Jn 5:22‑23). The Scriptures picture this final assembly in the “valley of Jehoshaphat,” drawn from Joel 3:2, where angels separate the good from the bad.

May this Lenten season become a genuine turning‑back, restoring our health in the Spirit and preparing us for the wedding feast of the Lamb.

By denying ourselves food, drink, or sinful habits, we create interior space for the Spirit, allowing the hunger for God’s will to replace the hunger for fleeting pleasures. As Fr. Father Matthew Tomeny, MIC invites us to contemplate today’s Gospel in light of the witness of St. Thomas More and St. Anthony the Great.

Jesus warns, “Whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it” (Mt 16:24; NABRE). In the same breath He calls us to “pick up our cross daily and follow Me” (Lk 9:23; NABRE).

The drama of Thomas More, who refused King Henry’s demand for a divorce and chose fidelity to Christ above crown and comfort, illustrates the cost of true discipleship. When Rich perjured himself for worldly gain, the saint reminded him that “the whole world is fleeting; what truly matters is the kingdom of God.” This echoes the “Catechism”: “The Christian is called to die to self and live for God” (CCC 1033).

Saint Anthony the Great taught the same radical love: “Die daily, if you wish to live eternally.” Our lives are like a house on fire — clinging to material treasures ensures our destruction, while abandoning them opens the path to everlasting life. As Moses declared, “I have set before you life and prosperity, death and doom” (Dt 30:15; NABRE).

Thus, each day presents a choice: hold fast to the fleeting comforts of this world, or lay them down at the foot of the Cross. The cross is not a burden to be avoided; it is the gateway to the resurrection. By surrendering our will to God’s will, we align ourselves with the divine plan and secure the promise of eternal life.

Let us, like St. Thomas More, abandon pride, ambition, and fear, and like St. Anthony, practice the daily death to self. In doing so, we fulfill Christ’s invitation: “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (Jn 14:15; NABRE).

The world has its “small-g gods”: sex, money, and power. In this powerful Lenten homily, Fr. Chris Alar, MIC explains how the consecrated religious counter them through poverty, chastity, and obedience—but what about the laity?

Fresh from a visit to the Holy Land, Fr. Chris Alar, MIC reflects on standing atop the Mount of Olives, praying in the Garden of Gethsemane, walking the Via Dolorosa, and entering the Church of the Holy Sepulchre—the very places where Christ taught, suffered, and redeemed us.

Father Chris challenges us not to live casually, but consciously — aware that eternity is not abstract. It is approaching. The saints understand this. They live with urgency, not anxiety; conviction, not fear of creatures. They knew that losing everything in this world is survivable. Losing your soul is not.

Run to mercy. Stay in the state of grace. Nourish your soul. And remember: The Lord desires your salvation even more than you do.

Saint Blaise understood this truth, and demonstrated it with his life and martyrdom. So do the other saints whose relics remind us that even the smallest contact with the truly holy — like touching the hem of a garment — can become a channel of grace when done with faith.

Whether we seek physical healing or carry unseen wounds of the soul, the invitation is the same: Run to the Divine Physician. Do not be afraid. Reach out. He still heals.

As our nation approaches a historic milestone, Fr. Mark Baron, MIC invites us to look deeper than slogans, documents, or even the American Dream. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are good aspirations—but they are incomplete unless they are rightly ordered. True happiness, as St. Thomas Aquinas teaches, is not rooted in possessions, power, or comfort, but in communion with God Himself.

Father Mark contrasts worldly definitions of happiness with the radical vision Jesus offers in the Beatitudes. This is not an escape from the world, but a way to live in it rightly. The Beatitudes are Jesus’ answer to a restless age: how to be truly happy, even now, by ordering our lives toward heaven.

Saint John Bosco knew something essential: young people don’t need watered-down truth—they need truth presented with love, joy, discipline, prayer, and mercy. They need to know that life includes work, recreation, suffering, temptation, and grace—and that none of it makes sense without God at the center.

At the heart of this homily is a powerful dream of St. John Bosco: a serpent defeated not by strength or fear, but by a rope that becomes the words Ave Maria. The Rosary. A simple prayer that heaven uses to conquer what we cannot on our own.

Chosen, anointed, and beloved by God, David nevertheless sins gravely — through sloth, lust, deceit, and murder. Yet this story is not preserved to excuse sin, but to reveal the astonishing depth of Divine Mercy.

David’s crimes are real and devastating. He abuses power, betrays trust, and orchestrates the death of an innocent man. But when confronted by the prophet Nathan, David does not justify himself. He repents. From the depths of that repentance comes Psalm 51: “Have mercy on me, O God, in your kindness; in your compassion blot out my offense” (Ps 51:3; NABRE). This cry becomes the prayer of the whole Church.

What follows defies human logic. God does not abandon His covenant. From this broken history comes restoration. From repentance comes mercy. And from this wounded lineage comes Solomon — and ultimately Jesus Christ Himself. As St. Paul teaches, “where sin increased, grace overflowed all the more” (Rom 5:20; NABRE). Mercy does not deny justice; it transforms the sinner who turns back to God.

This is the heart of The Divine Mercy message entrusted to Saint Faustina: no sin is greater than God’s mercy when met with repentance and trust (“The Diary of St. Faustina,” 699). The Catechism affirms that God’s mercy is infinite and offered to every contrite heart (“Catechism of the Catholic Church,”1847).

This homily invites us to hope. No past is irredeemable. No repentance is wasted. God is always working — not against us, but with us, for our salvation.

When Jesus speaks of a lamp placed on a stand, He reveals how God works in history. What God makes known is meant to give light, and what He reveals is never accidental or incomplete.

As the Catechism teaches, “It is part of the Church’s mission to pass moral judgments even in matters related to politics, whenever the fundamental rights of man or the salvation of souls require it” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 2246).

Father Chris reminds us that division ends only when we surrender our will to God’s will. The first commandment is not merely about avoiding false gods; it is about refusing to make ourselves the arbiter of truth. When we submit to Christ through the teaching of His Church, unity becomes possible—not a shallow peace, but a peace grounded in truth.

This call is demanding, but it is also merciful. Truth is not meant to crush us; it is meant to free us. Only by standing together on the truth can the divisions of our world begin to heal.

Father Jason Lewis, MIC confronts a question that has echoed since the time of Christ: Who is Jesus, really? As the Gospel recounts, some of Jesus’ own relatives believed He was “out of his mind,” while the scribes accused Him of acting by the power of evil. Yet Jesus’ works—healing the sick, casting out demons, forgiving sins—force a decision that cannot be avoided.

Father Jason draws on the classic trilemma, popularized by C.S. Lewis: Jesus can only be one of three things—lunatic, liar, or Lord. A mere “good moral teacher” is not an option. As Lewis argued, a man who claimed divine authority and spoke as Jesus did could not simply be misunderstood or exaggerated. Either His claims were false, making Him gravely deceptive or delusional, or they were true, demanding our faith and obedience. Scripture itself bears witness to this truth: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (Jn 1:1, 14; NABRE).

The Church has always proclaimed this same confession of faith. Saint Peter declared, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God” (Mt 16:16; NABRE), not by human reasoning alone, but by revelation from the Father. Father Jason reminds us that the fruit of Christ’s life and teachings confirms this identity. Lies do not produce saints. Deception does not transform the world through sacrificial love, truth, and mercy across centuries.

Because Jesus is Lord, He does more than teach—He gives Himself. In the Eucharist, entrusted to the Apostles and handed down through the priesthood, Christ remains truly present to nourish His people and draw them into divine life. This is the heart of the Gospel and the foundation of Christian faith.

As death draws near, what remains essential becomes unmistakably clear. Father Gabe reminds us that in moments of illness, isolation, or approaching death, the soul longs for God with a new urgency. The Eucharist, a priestly blessing, and the presence of someone who comes “in the name of Jesus” are no longer small consolations; they are lifelines. Scripture teaches that peace is never merely political. It is moral and spiritual, what St.
Augustine called the “tranquility of order.” When life is no longer received as a gift,
society drifts into darkness. Jesus warns us plainly that without Him, humanity remains
lost, but with Him we find “the way, the truth, and the life” (Jn 14:6; NABRE). The
Catechism affirms that human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the
moment of conception (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2270). This is not optional
teaching; it is foundational.

Father Matthew explains that even where legal victories have been achieved, the
deeper battle continues in hearts and in culture. Laws alone cannot restore what has
been lost. A culture of life requires conversion, sacrifice, and reparation. Saint Faustina
understood this when she offered suffering for grave sins against life, appealing to the
Divine Mercy to hold back judgment and bring repentance. Her Diary reveals that no
sin, however grave, is greater than God’s mercy when hearts turn back to Him (Diary of

protection of unborn children. True peace will not come through fear or force, but
through surrender — through trust in the mercy of God and a renewed commitment to
chastity, responsibility, and reverence for life.

Christ desires life, not death. When the Church proclaims this truth without compromise,
she becomes a sign of hope in a world searching for peace.

Many people struggle with the Bible because they sense a tension between the Old Testament and the New. The God of the Old Testament is sometimes portrayed as harsh, violent, even distant, while the New Testament reveals mercy, healing, and love. Father Chris Alar, MIC addresses this confusion directly by reminding us of the question Christ Himself poses: “Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath rather than to do evil, to save life rather than to destroy it?” (Mk 3:4; NABRE).

Without Christ, humanity’s vision is limited. In the Old Testament, death, war, and violence reflect a world still waiting for the full revelation of divine life. The Catechism teaches that God gradually prepared His people to receive the Gospel through salvation history, leading them step by step toward Christ (Catechism of the Catholic Church §122). The New Testament does not contradict the Old; it fulfills it.

This contrast becomes striking when we consider Saint Agnes, whose feast the Church celebrates. Her very name echoes the Latin agnus, meaning lamb. Young, pure, and wholly given to Christ, she chose life in the fullest sense, even when it led to martyrdom. Her witness stands between death and life, between the violence of the world and the light of Christ. As Scripture proclaims, “I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly” (Jn 10:10; NABRE).

The culture of death persists whenever Christ is rejected, whether in ancient persecution or modern disregard for human dignity. Yet Christ remains the Light of the world, drawing us from darkness into truth, from death into life. In Him alone do we find the way, the truth, and the life.

In the Gospel, Jesus’ repeated conflicts with the Pharisees over the Sabbath reveal not rebellion against God’s law, but a restoration of its true purpose. As Father Mark Baron, MIC explains, the Pharisees arose during a time of intense pressure to preserve Jewish identity. Their zeal to protect the Law led them to build layers of manmade regulations meant to prevent even the possibility of sin. What began as devotion slowly became a burden.

When the disciples plucked heads of grain, the Pharisees accused them of unlawful work. Yet Jesus responds with divine clarity: “The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath” (Mk 2:27; NABRE). God did not establish the Sabbath to enslave His people in fear, but to sanctify them. The commandment to rest is ordered toward holiness, not anxiety.

Scripture confirms this purpose. “Remember the sabbath day—keep it holy” (Ex 20:8; NABRE). The Sabbath is a sign that God sanctifies His people, forming them into a holy nation (ref. Ex 31:13–14). To sanctify means to make holy, to perfect us in goodness. When rest becomes fear-driven rule keeping, the heart of the law is lost.

Jesus, as Lord of the Sabbath, restores it to its original intention: human flourishing through worship, surrender, and love. This is fulfilled for Christians in the Lord’s Day, when the faithful gather for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The Mass is not a burden imposed by God, but a gift through which He sanctifies us. To neglect it knowingly is not freedom, but loss.

God’s commandments are always a “yes” to life, goodness, and holiness. When rightly understood, they draw us closer to Him and restore us to what we were created to be.

Before healing the man’s body, Jesus heals his soul. The paralytic seeks physical restoration, but Christ addresses a greater paralysis: sin. Sin paralyzes the soul and separates us from God, the source of life. “Who can forgive sins but God alone?” the scribes challenge (Mk 2:7, NABRE). Indeed, only God forgives, yet they fail to see the Divine in front of them. Jesus, God incarnate, reveals His authority not only by perceiving hearts but by forgiving sins and restoring the man.

Why would God allow Israel to be defeated even while the Levites were carrying the Ark of the Covenant before the army into battle? And why would Jesus heal a leper — then sternly command him to tell no one? In this homily, Fr. Mark Baron, MIC, brings these unsettling questions together and shows that they reveal the same spiritual danger: presumption.

Israel treated the Ark as a weapon, a mere tool, rather than a sign of fidelity to the covenant with God. Though God had called them to be “a kingdom of priests and a holy nation” (Ex 19:6; NABRE), the people and their leaders were living in grave sin. Trust in sacred objects rather than trust in God and determined obedience to God led to Israel’s defeat. The Ark was holy — but the hearts of the people of Israel had grown hardened.

He did not come as a mere political liberator, but to establish the Kingdom of God within the human heart. Leprosy, Fr. Mark explains, is a powerful image of sin: slow-growing, numbing, disfiguring, and blinding. Sin deadens the conscience and distorts the soul far more than disease ever could.

Christ touches the leper without fear. His mercy is stronger than corruption. He desires to cleanse what sin has deformed and restore the beauty lost through disobedience. The true enemy is not external forces, but the sin that takes root within us. Only repentance and humility allow God’s Kingdom to reign in our hearts.

Father Chris Alar, MIC, reflects on the heart of the discernment of every vocation: learning to listen to God. Are we listening when God calls?

The demons recognize His authority because it is divine. Every knee bends at the name of Jesus because His name is the name of God.

Even fatigue before the Blessed Sacrament is not wasted. Resting in Christ’s presence is still prayer. Time given to Jesus is never lost—it is the sacrifice that forms true disciples.

Father Chris Alar, MIC, confronts a hard but urgent truth drawn from Sacred Scripture and the teaching authority of the Church: the Antichrist is not only a future figure, but a present spirit at work in the world. Reflecting on the First Letter of John, Fr. Chris explains that Scripture speaks of both a singular Antichrist still to come and many “antichrists” already active—those who have departed from Christ by rejecting His Church (1 Jn 2:18–19; NABRE).

This deception is subtle. It often disguises itself as independence, spirituality without authority, or self-made salvation. To deny the Church established by Christ is to deny Christ Himself, even when His name is still spoken.

Father Chris reminds us that the Church is not man-made, but God-made—founded by Christ, entrusted to the Apostles, and preserved through apostolic authority (Mt 16:18; NABRE). Though imperfect in her human members, she remains divinely protected in her mission. Like Noah’s Ark, the Church may feel uncomfortable at times, but outside of it there is only drowning.

The answer to confusion is not retreat, but fidelity. Through Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist, God sustains His remnant and strengthens them to remain faithful witnesses. Evil has already been defeated, but souls are still at stake. Our task is not fear, but perseverance—praying, teaching, and living the truth so that others may return to Christ through His Church.

The mystery of Christmas overturns every illusion of self-salvation. God does not wait for humanity to climb back to Him. He comes down.

Father Anthony Gramlich, MIC, draws us into this central truth of the Incarnation: Fallen humanity cannot raise itself by its own efforts. Grace is not something we generate. Redemption begins with divine humility.

The world repeatedly offers a different promise — especially in modern spiritual movements — that we can elevate ourselves through technique, effort, or enlightenment. But Scripture reveals the opposite. Because of sin, humanity cannot lift itself to God. Instead, God lowers Himself to lift us. As St. Paul writes, Christ “emptied himself, taking the form of a slave” (Phil 2:7; NABRE). Born in poverty and obscurity, rejected by the world, Jesus enters fully into our human condition — without sin — in order to heal it from within.

Father Anthony traces this saving pattern through salvation history itself. Humanity fell through the wood of the tree in Eden, and humanity is raised through the wood of the Cross. God is born on wood, works with wood, and dies on wood so that what once led us away from Heaven becomes the instrument that brings us back. Christmas is already pointing toward Calvary, and Calvary toward resurrection.

This mystery demands proclamation. The angels announced it. The shepherds ran to see it. Anna spoke of it to all who awaited redemption. Christmas is not meant to remain silent or sentimental. It is the celebration of a God who acts, a God who saves, and a God who does for us what we cannot do for ourselves. To speak about Christmas rightly is to speak about Jesus Christ — the One who came down so that we might be raised up by grace.

“Though he was in the form of God… he humbled himself” (Phil 2:6a & 8a; NABRE).

Father Chris Alar, MIC reflects on the coming Feast of the Presentation of the Lord and the Purification of Mary — a mystery often misunderstood, and sometimes misused, to challenge the Church’s teaching on Our Lady. What appears, at first glance, to be a ritual of purification reveals instead a profound lesson in obedience, humility, and grace.

Mary did not submit to the law because she was sinful. Her purification was legal, not moral — a requirement of Mosaic law tied to childbirth, not guilt. Just as Jesus did not need Baptism yet freely accepted it, Mary did not need purification yet humbly embraced it. Grace raised her above the law, Fr. Chris explains, but humility placed her beneath it. Together, Jesus and Mary show us that obedience to God’s law is not weakness, but witness.

The Presentation also reminds us that every child belongs first to God. In the ancient law, the firstborn was not owned by the parents, but lent to them by the Lord. Parenthood, therefore, is stewardship — a sacred trust for which we will one day answer. Faith must be passed on by example, just as Mary and Joseph lived the law faithfully before their Son.

Father Chris then turns our attention to Simeon and Anna, the “quiet in the land.” They did not seek power, spectacle, or influence. They waited in silence, prayer, and hope. Their lives testify that holiness is not measured by activity, but by fidelity. This is a special word of encouragement for the homebound and forgotten: quiet prayer, offered faithfully, shapes salvation history.

Finally, Simeon’s prophecy confronts us with a sobering truth. Christ does not condemn us — we judge ourselves by our response to Him. When His law meets a heart that loves, it lifts us up. When it meets indifference or rejection, we turn away on our own. Salvation is not a one-time declaration, but a daily surrender. Like  St. Thérèse of Lisieux taught, we are not called to climb to heaven by our strength, but to place ourselves in Christ’s hands and let Him do the lifting.

Grace invites. Humility responds. And the hand of Jesus raises all who are willing to endure in Him

Father Chris warns that Satan’s most persistent attacks have always been aimed at these two bedrocks: the Church and the family. Marriage is redefined. Gender is redefined. Parenthood is fragmented. Even within Catholic homes, silence has been replaced by constant noise, family meals by screens, and shared life by isolation. The result is not freedom, but fragmentation — a loss of humanity itself.

Drawing from Pope Paul VI, Fr. Chris highlights the essential pillars of a holy family: silence, love, and discipline. Silence creates space for God to speak. Love orders the home toward self-gift rather than self-interest. Discipline — rooted in the word disciple — forms children for heaven, not merely for comfort. Parents are not called to be passive observers of their children’s lives, but faithful stewards accountable to God for their souls.

The family, Father Chris reminds us, is the domestic Church — the first place where obedience, forgiveness, sacrifice, and prayer are learned. It is where children discover who God is by watching how love is lived. Even in broken or difficult situations, God’s grace remains active. Single parents, those abandoned or wounded, are not forgotten by the Church. Their fidelity, sacrifice, and perseverance often become powerful witnesses of divine providence.

Ultimately, the Holy Family shows us that commitment is not a burden but a mission. Joseph protected. Mary trusted. Jesus obeyed. God became man within a family so that all families might be drawn into the family of God. A holy family, Fr. Chris teaches, is not only our greatest defense against the world — it is our most powerful way of transforming it.

Salvation is more than a moment. It is participation in the very life of God through grace. Jesus enters the world as the Word made flesh, the Light of truth sent to reveal the Father and restore communion with Him. “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (Jn 1:5; NABRE). Yet when truth shines, darkness resists.

Saint Stephen, filled with grace and power, lived a transformed life after Pentecost (Acts 6:8). His witness to Christ threatened those who clung to security without conversion. Unable to refute the truth, they attacked the messenger. Stephen, fixing his gaze on heaven, saw Christ standing at the right hand of the Father — the Savior welcoming His faithful witness home.

Christmas teaches us that salvation must be endured, not assumed. Jesus Himself warns, “But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.” (Mt 24:13). The Child in the manger is also the Light that exposes hearts, inviting repentance, perseverance, and real transformation.

Saint Stephen reminds us that affection for Christmas is not enough. We are called to receive the truth Christ brings, even when it wounds, because within that pain is the healing God desires. To welcome the Light is to allow our lives to be changed.

Father Daniel Klimek, MIC confronts a growing indifference toward the Blessed Virgin Mary—even among Catholics—and reminds us that authentic Christianity is always Marian. The words of the Magnificat are not poetic exaggeration; they are divinely inspired truth: “From now on will all ages call me blessed.” (Lk 1:48; NABRE). Reverence for Mary is not optional sentiment—it is a biblical directive.

Mary’s song echoes the praise of Miriam in the Old Testament, yet now the liberation announced is not political, but eternal. Through the womb of the Virgin, Christ enters the world. She becomes the Ark of the New Covenant, bearing not the law written on stone, but the Word made flesh. To diminish her role is to misunderstand the Incarnation itself.

Father Daniel warns that indifference toward Mary is one of the most subtle spiritual dangers of our time. When Marian devotion is reduced to a “personal spirituality,” something essential is lost. From the Cross, Jesus entrusted His Mother to the beloved disciple—and in him, to every Christian: “Behold, your mother” (Jn 19:27; NABRE). This was not symbolic poetry; it was a sacred investiture.

To honor Mary never detracts from Christ. As the saints affirm, devotion to the Mother always leads more deeply to the Son. The Immaculate Heart is inseparably united to the Sacred Heart. When we receive Mary into our spiritual life, as St. John did, our faith becomes more profound, more biblical, and more fully Catholic.

Mary is not an accessory to the Gospel. She is at its heart. To receive her is to receive one of Christ’s final gifts from the Cross—a Mother who intercedes, protects, and leads us unfailingly to Him.

Father Chris, MIC leads us into the hidden strength and obedience of Saint Joseph—a man whose silence speaks louder than words. While Mary’s fiat is rightly celebrated, salvation history also depended on Joseph’s quiet “yes.” Without it, Jesus would not have had the legal lineage of David, nor the protection and provision of a faithful earthly father.

Joseph stands as the head of the Holy Family, chosen by God to guard what was most sacred. Though sinless perfection belonged only to Mary, the Church has long taught that Joseph was sanctified for his mission. Astonishingly, God Himself chose to live in obedience to Mary and Joseph, revealing the dignity of family life and the authority entrusted to fathers.

Matthew’s Gospel shows us the Nativity through Joseph’s eyes. Faced with confusion and fear, Joseph chose charity over judgment. Only after he resolved to act mercifully did God send clarity through an angelic dream. Scripture reminds us that God’s guidance often follows—not precedes—acts of trust. “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid” (Mt 1:20; NABRE).

Saint Joseph models humility, courage, chastity, and obedience to God’s will. As patron of the family and the Church—two realities most fiercely attacked—his role is more urgent than ever. His life teaches us that holiness is often hidden, obedience is rarely loud, and faith is proven in action.

When God is about to do something great—something that will change lives—He almost always begins with preparation. That preparation is rarely comfortable. It often includes waiting, suffering, and long seasons that seem unanswered. Father Anthony Gramlich, MIC reflects on this divine pattern by drawing our attention to two couples marked by infertility and faith: Manoah and his wife in the Old Testament, and Zechariah and Elizabeth in the New Testament.

Samson’s birth followed years of suffering, yet his consecration began before he ever took a breath. In the same way, the birth of John the Baptist comes only after decades of hidden fidelity. Zechariah and Elizabeth were “righteous in the eyes of God,” yet they carried a heavy cross. Their story reveals a hard truth of the spiritual life: holiness does not exempt us from suffering. Often, it deepens it.

Zechariah’s moment of doubt silences him, but God’s promise is not silenced. The angel Gabriel declares, “Your prayer has been heard” (Lk 1:13; NABRE), reminding us that prayers offered in faith are never wasted—even when the answer comes long after hope seems reasonable. God works on His timetable, not ours, and His plans exceed human logic.

This Gospel teaches us not to ask “why” in suffering, but to trust that God is preparing something greater than we can imagine. As the Church leads us toward Christmas, these Scriptures invite us to prepare not just our homes, but our hearts. Christ does not enter through decorations or schedules, but through faith refined by trust.

“For nothing will be impossible for God” (Lk 1:37; NABRE).

Father Matthew, Tomeny, MIC reflects on St. Joseph — the silent guardian of the Holy Family — and the mystery that unfolded when God entrusted him with Mary and the Christ Child. The Gospel tells us Joseph was “a righteous man” (Mt 1:19; NABRE), not because he had all the answers, but because he responded to God with humility, reverence, and obedience. Faced with a situation beyond human explanation, Joseph chose mercy over judgment and trust over control.

Father Matthew explores the Church’s rich tradition on Joseph’s response to Mary’s pregnancy. Rather than suspicion, many saints and theologians saw in Joseph a profound reverential fear — a recognition that he was standing before the work of the Holy Spirit. Like St. Peter who said, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” (Lk 5:8; NABRE), Joseph considered himself unworthy to be so close to such holiness. His desire to step back was not rejection, but awe.

God, however, reveals Joseph’s role through the angel: “Do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home” (Mt 1:20; NABRE). Joseph’s obedience gives Jesus His legal lineage as Son of David and provides the Holy Family with protection and stability. Though he never speaks a word in Scripture, Joseph’s faith speaks loudly.

As Christmas approaches, this homily invites us to imitate St. Joseph — to stop striving for control and allow Christ to dwell in the home of our hearts. True righteousness is found not in understanding everything, but in humbly saying "yes" when God asks us to make room for Him.

This lineage includes saints and sinners, faithful patriarchs and corrupt kings, Jews and Gentiles, holiness and grave sin. Scripture does not hide the dysfunction. David’s adultery, idolatrous rulers, exile, foreign bloodlines — all are present. And yet, this is precisely where Christ chooses to enter. God does not wait for a perfect family tree. He enters human history as it is and redeems it from the inside out.

Father Tyler reminds us that Matthew deliberately frames this genealogy as a new beginning — a new Genesis. Just as creation began “in the beginning,” so now a new creation begins with Christ. Jesus stands at the center of history, time, and salvation. As Scripture teaches, “... whoever is in Christ is a new creation” (2 Cor 5:17; NABRE).

This message is especially powerful as Christmas approaches. Many families carry wounds, strained relationships, and painful legacies. Yet the Gospel assures us that when Jesus is invited into a family, into a heart, into a life, everything begins to change.

Sin does not have the final word. Grace does.

As we prepare for Christmas, Fr. Tyler challenges us to ask honestly: Where is Christ still waiting to be invited in? When we say yes to Him, the Lord who “will save his people from their sins” (Mt 1:21; NABRE) begins a work of restoration that reaches backward, forward, and into eternity.

In today’s homily, Fr. David Gunter, MIC, draws us into the prophetic urgency of Zephaniah and the hope that follows divine correction. Speaking to a time of widespread apostasy and moral confusion, the prophet confronts a people seduced by false worship and corrupt leadership. Yet Zephaniah does not end with judgment. He announces restoration.

Scripture reminds us that God never abandons His people:

“But I will leave within you
    the meek and humble.
The remnant of Israel
    will trust in the name of the Lord.” (Zeph 3:12).

Throughout salvation history, the Lord preserves a faithful remnant — not the proud or powerful, but those supple to grace. Saint Paul echoes this truth when recalling Elijah’s despair: “So also at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace” (Rom 11:5). Advent places this message squarely before us. The birth of Christ sets the restoration of humanity in motion — for Israel and the Gentiles alike.

Father Gunter challenges us to recognize that we are living in a new season of preparation, one that calls for silence, repentance, and humility rather than distraction and noise. Those who recognized the Messiah — Anna, Simeon, Joseph, Elizabeth, and above all the Blessed Virgin Mary — were humble souls formed by prayer and trust. The same humility is required of us today. As the psalmist declares, “God alone is my rock and salvation… my refuge is in God” (Ps 62:7a & 8c). This Advent, the question is not whether God is offering grace — He is — but whether we are prepared to receive it. Through Confession, prayer, and fidelity, let us become the remnant ready for Christ to be born anew in our hearts.

Advent places this message squarely before us. The birth of Christ sets the restoration of humanity in motion — for Israel and the Gentiles alike.

In today’s reflection, Fr. Matt discusses the prophecy of Balaam in the Book of Numbers. Balaam, a pagan soothsayer, is compelled to proclaim the truth: “A star shall advance from Jacob, and a scepter shall rise from Israel.” Though Balaam himself was far from holy, God still spoke through him, showing that divine truth is not limited by the weakness of the messenger. That prophecy finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ — the true King, whose authority extends not just over Israel, but over all nations.

The same King enters Jerusalem humbly, riding on a donkey, praised by children, and rejected by leaders who refuse to listen. Their question — “By what authority are you doing these things?” — is not born of curiosity, but of hardened hearts. They hear the words, but they are willfully deaf to their meaning.

Father Matt challenges us to examine our own hearts. Are we listening for God’s voice, or only for what confirms what we already want? Like the Blessed Virgin Mary, true blessing comes when we say, “Let it be done to me according to your word.” God speaks in Scripture, in the poor, in His Church, in prayer, and in the Eucharist — but He will not force our ears open.

God speaks. The question remains: will we listen?

This mystery comes alive in the apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Standing before the sun, upon the moon, and clothed with stars, Mary reveals that she is not a goddess but a mother who leads souls to the one true God. Her image spoke directly to the Aztec world, proclaiming that human sacrifice was over. No longer would hearts and blood be offered to false gods. Instead, God Himself would offer His own Heart and Blood to feed His people in the Holy Eucharist. “I am the living bread that came down from heaven” (Jn 6:51).

Mary’s message still resounds today. She unites what was divided, drawing every people and culture into communion with Christ. As Mother of the Church, she continues her mission: to bring us always to her Son, Jesus, truly present in the Eucharist.

“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice” (Phil 4:4). On Gaudete Sunday, Fr. Matt reminds us why the Church pauses in Advent to rejoice: the Lord is near. Advent is not only preparation for Christ’s first coming at Bethlehem, but vigilance for His Second Coming, when He will “judge the living and the dead,” as we profess in the Creed. The prophet Isaiah foretold that the Messiah would open blind eyes, unstop deaf ears, make the lame leap, and cause the mute to sing (Is 35:5–6). Yet as Fr. Matt explains, these miracles point to something even deeper. Christ came not merely to heal bodies, but to heal souls. Spiritual blindness, deafness, paralysis, and death caused by sin are far more devastating than physical illness. Jesus’ miracles are signs that He alone restores life through grace.

John the Baptist understood this. From prison, he sent his disciples to Jesus — not out of doubt, but so they might encounter the Lamb of God themselves. Christ’s response revealed the truth: salvation was at hand. Still today, joy depends on recognizing our need for Him. When we cling to sin, we choose darkness over light and forfeit the freedom Christ offers. But when we repent and receive His mercy, the light conquers the night.

Jesus told St. Faustina, “I am the King of Mercy… before I come as a just Judge” (Diary, 83). In the Eucharist, He comes even now. If we rejoice at His coming today, we will rejoice when He comes again.

On December 11, the Marian Fathers celebrate the spiritual founding of our community, dating back to 1670 when St. Stanislaus Papczyński made his solemn oblation and offered his whole being to God and to the Blessed Virgin Mary, conceived without original sin. In his vow, he promised to promote and defend her honor even to the cost of his life. Today, Fr. Matt reminds us that this mission continues.

Before the dogma of the Immaculate Conception was officially defined in the 1800s, St. Stanislaus endured opposition and misunderstanding—yet he remained steadfast. Why? Because Mary is the New Eve, created immaculate to cooperate perfectly with Christ, the New Adam, in God’s plan of redemption. As Fulton Sheen often noted, humanity fell through a man, a woman, and a tree—and God redeemed us through a Man, a Woman, and the Tree of the Cross.

Mary’s sinlessness reveals the beauty of the new creation, where Jesus makes all things new. She shows us not only who she is, but who we are called to become through grace. Fr. Advent is a penitential season because we cannot encounter the presence of Jesus—especially in the Holy Eucharist—without first making space for Him. At every Mass, the priest invites us to “call to mind our sins” so our hearts may be properly prepared to receive the One who became flesh and dwelt among us. The Sacrament of Penance is not a burden but a gift. It is God’s mercy reorganizing the disordered places in our hearts, bringing light where there is darkness and peace where there is turmoil.

True repentance lifts us up. It purifies the will, strengthens virtue, and restores the joy that disorder steals. When we do good, we become good. When we welcome grace, order returns. To encounter Christ is to encounter the One who heals—physically, spiritually, supernaturally. Today’s Gospel reminds us that miracles are not mythology but reality. Two blind men cry out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on us.” Their plea becomes the seed of what the Church would later cherish as the Jesus Prayer—“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”

The Fathers of the Church teach us that Scripture works on multiple levels. Historically, the miracle happened. Allegorically, the story unveils the drama of the spiritual life. We, too, are often blind—moving through seasons of darkness, dryness, and desolation. St. John of the Cross calls this the “dark night of the senses,” a purification God permits so that we learn fidelity beyond feelings.

Yet God does not leave the faithful in darkness. For those who persevere, He leads them into illumination, contemplation, even the grace of infused prayer—where, as St. Teresa of Avila describes, the soul is “invaded by the supernatural.” Prayer shifts from something we do to something God does in us.

This is the heart of the Jesus Prayer. Slowly, reverently, breathed in rhythm with the heart, the soul becomes accustomed to the presence of Jesus. The Eastern saints tell us that one can reach the place where even in sleep the heart continues to pray.

This is our call: not merely to “say prayers,” but to become prayer. To carry Jesus in every breath. To let His name shape our thoughts, our conversations, our interior life. When we invoke His Holy Name, He draws near—because He desires intimate communion with us.

In Proverbs 8, Scripture reveals a tender mystery: before the world began, the Eternal Son “was beside Him… playing before Him at all times.” Before creation, before the angels, Jesus rejoiced in the Father’s presence with the freedom of a child. Fr. Anthony reminds us that this childlike joy is not optional—it is essential to the spiritual life. “Unless you become like little children, you will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven” (Mt 18:3).

We work, plan, strategize, and try to control everything. But God models something different: on the seventh day He rested—not out of fatigue, but delight. He teaches us to receive, to enjoy, to play. Children do this naturally. They don’t resent the snow; they run into it with joy. They teach us spontaneity, hope, and wonder—dispositions that open the heart to grace.

The saints lived this way. St. Therese taught her “little way” precisely because she recognized her own littleness and God’s greatness. St. Faustina wrote Diary only out of obedience, abandoning her own will for God’s. This surrender is the heart of Divine Mercy: “My will does not exist; now I do the will of God” (Diary).

Childlikeness is not immaturity—it is spiritual clarity. It is trusting that God will truly provide everything, spiritually and materially. It is receiving Holy Communion with the joy of a child opening a Christmas gift. It is letting Jesus “clean the house” of your soul. It is learning to say with Mary: “Let it be done to me according to Your word.”

Every person deserves the fullness of truth—the sacraments, the Eucharist, the tender strength of Our Lady, and the saving intimacy of Jesus Christ. “Go, therefore, and make disciples” remains a command of love. And as Fr. Daniel reminds us, judgment considers not only what we have done, but what we have been given. Those who reject the Gospel after receiving much will be accountable for more.

In the end, God’s mercy is vast, but truth is not relative. Christ alone saves, Christ alone is divine, and Christ alone conquered death. Yet His grace works tirelessly—even in hidden places—to draw every heart toward Himself. May we cherish the fullness we’ve received, evangelize with zeal, and trust that God never ceases reaching for His children, from every nation, religion, and corner of the earth.

Saint Andrew Dũng-Lạc and his companions lived this truth heroically. Arrested, tortured, ransomed, and arrested again, they remained interiorly free—joyful even—because their choice for Christ was rooted in the depths no chains could reach. Their witness echoes that of the Apostles singing hymns in prison, and above all, Christ Himself on the Cross. From His place of suffering, Jesus freely offered His life: “No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord” (John 10:18). His heart remained sovereign, forgiving His persecutors, entrusting Himself to the Father, and rising in glory.

Fr. Tyler reminds us that persecution in our own age may be subtler—cultural pressures, moral confusion, spiritual weariness—but the battleground is the same. Nothing in this world, no government, movement, or ideology, can make the choice of our heart for us. Every Christian must decide: Will I choose Christ today, especially when the cross becomes heavy? The Vietnamese martyrs, the Apostles, and the Lord Himself show that true freedom is found in fidelity, even in suffering. As the liturgical year draws to its close, the Gospel calls us to stay awake, to guard that sacred interior ground where God speaks and where love chooses Him in return.

May we, like the martyrs, give Christ our “yes” anew today, remaining faithful until the end when He leads us through death into eternal life.

He conquers sin, death, and Satan by embracing the Cross, proving that divine authority is expressed through sacrificial love. The Diary of St. Faustina echoes this mystery when Jesus says, “The flames of mercy are burning Me. I desire to pour them out upon human souls” (Diary, 1074). Christ thirsts for souls, not for earthly glory.

Fr. Anthony urges each of us to enthrone Jesus as King in our hearts. The real battle is not with political enemies or cultural currents, but within — between virtue and vice, grace and temptation. To invite Christ the King is to ask Him to conquer our interior enemies quickly and decisively. And where the King reigns, He places His Queen — the Blessed Virgin Mary — beside Him. Through truth, humility, and repentance, the kingdom of God takes root within us, leading us to the final victory: rising with Christ after our death, just like the good thief who prayed, “Jesus, remember me.”

The Book of Wisdom reminds us that divine wisdom is “holy, unique, manifold, subtle, loving the good, and all-powerful.” It is this wisdom that restores the order lost by sin and allows us to see reality through God’s eyes. When we live according to His divine order, peace and fulfillment follow. When we reject it, disorder and unhappiness rule our hearts.

Jesus teaches in today’s Gospel that “the Kingdom of God is within you.” This means that the Kingdom is not merely a place but the very life of God alive in the soul of the righteous. As St. Faustina recorded in her Diary, Jesus said, “My Kingdom is my life in the human soul.” To live wisely, then, is to allow the Kingdom of God to take root in us — to let divine wisdom order our thoughts, our choices, and our desires according to God’s plan.

Fr. Mark urges us to ask daily for the gift of wisdom — a wisdom that enables us to live rightly, see eternally, and walk in peace. The truly wise are those who look not merely to this world but to eternity, shaping their lives by the light of divine truth. In today’s Gospel, we encounter the ten lepers who call out to Jesus from a distance. Only one returns to give thanks — a Samaritan, a foreigner. Yet it is this “outsider” who draws near, falls at Christ’s feet, and glorifies God. His gratitude becomes worship. The Greek word used here is eucharisteo — to give thanks — the same root of our word Eucharist. In that moment, the healed man “Eucharisted” Jesus, showing us that true thanksgiving is communion with God Himself.

Fr. Tyler reflects on how this healing foreshadows what Christ accomplishes in the Eucharist: God drawing near to the outcast, uniting what was divided, and restoring communion through His Body and Blood. Just as the Samaritan crossed the barrier between distance and intimacy, Christ crosses the infinite divide between heaven and earth, destroying the walls that sin has built.

St. Josaphat lived this mystery to the end. In a time of bitter division between East and West, he longed for the unity of all Christians under the successor of Peter. We often misuse the word “love.” We say we love our favorite show, a meal, or even a football team — but authentic Christian love runs much deeper. As St. Thomas Aquinas teaches, “To love is to will the good of another.” (ST I-II, Q.26, A.4) True love is not indulgent approval of anything someone does; it’s the desire for their eternal good, even when that means speaking truth or making hard choices.

Fr. Chris reminds us that not all giving is love. Some give out of duty, guilt, or to feel superior — but only one kind of love endures before God: the love that gives simply because it can’t do otherwise. The love that expects no return. The love that flows from a heart transformed by grace.

When Attila the Hun and his brutal army advanced toward Rome, Pope Leo — a frail, elderly man — went out alone to meet him. God Himself defended His Church through the courage and faith of His servant.

Yet Pope Leo’s greatest battle was not fought with swords, but with words. Too often, people misunderstand Purgatory. It is not a second chance, nor punishment, nor forgiveness of sins — that happens in the confessional. Rather, it is the merciful purification of souls who died in grace but still need to be cleansed of attachment and the lingering effects of sin. As Fr. Chris teaches, “Christ paid the price for our redemption, but He did not remove the consequences.” A loving Father forgives, but still allows us to repair what was damaged. That is justice in love.

The Church calls us — the Church Militant — to help the Church Suffering through prayer, fasting, indulgences, and sacrifices. The poor souls cannot help themselves; even the saints in Heaven cannot directly shorten their time. But you can. Offer Masses, rosaries, and daily sufferings for them. Each small act of love can release a soul into Heaven. “Love covers a multitude of sins” (1 Pt 4:8).

Many claim Halloween is rooted in paganism, yet history says otherwise. Popes Gregory III and IV, who established the feast and its vigil, had no knowledge of the Celtic festival of Samhain. While certain customs like bonfires, costumes, and carved lanterns existed in pagan Europe, their Christian meaning transformed them: light overcoming darkness, prayers for the dead, and the triumph of holiness over sin. As with the Christmas tree, these cultural remnants were baptized—not banned—by the Church.

Our Catholic ancestors saw All Hallows’ Eve as a time to remember that life on earth is fleeting and that Heaven, Purgatory, and Hell are real.
