Traveling Good Time Medicine Show - A History

In August 1980, Winnipeg Folk Festival founders Mitch Podolak and Ava Kobrinsky produced a tour across Alberta called The Travelling Goodtime Medicine Show. The tour was a school bus full of now legendary musicians - Sylvia Tyson, Stan Rogers, Connie Kaldor and Jim Post - travelling from town to town, bringing one-day mini-festivals to each of these communities. This tour was an important catalyst for the founding of The Calgary and Edmonton Folk Festivals, also laying the theoretical framework for an organization that would begin to take shape 25 years later: Home Routes

To celebrate their 15th anniversary, Home Routes is rekindling the name from those legendary concerts that laid the foundation for Canada’s folk music institutions, and creating a new concert series, along with this companion podcast mini-series.

In Episode 1, host Jaxon Haldane brings you back in time to interview those that were there for the birth of The Travelling Good Time Medicine Show.

The Travelling Good Time Medicine Show : Trailer

Join Jaxon Haldane in conversation with Keri Latimer in this season’s Home Routes Podcast finale, as they discuss coping strategies used over the past year, what new opportunities arose from the lockdown and what the new live show reality might look like. Also Keri talks about her passion about the history of synthesizers, about laying down harmonies on other people’s projects and tells us about her experience with Stories to Songs project made in collaboration with Crescent Arts Centre.

Keri Latimer is a musician from Winnipeg, Manitoba and frontwoman of the band Leaf Rapids. She has been touring internationally for 15 years and has been recognized with numerous Canadian music awards most notably a JUNO.

Career highlights include featured theremin performances with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, and contributing scores to films including Academy Award nominated, Frozen River; Guy Maddin’s, Only Dream Things; and Shelagh Carter’s feature film, Before Anything You Say for which she was awarded a 2018 Breakout West Award for Visual Media Composer of the Year.

With the help of Canada Council, the Winnipeg Arts Council and the Manitoba Arts Council Keri is currently composing an album of music for theremin.

Jaxon and Cara discuss the realities of a post-pandemic future as Canadian touring musicians. Cara talks about her tiny house-on-wheels tour plans for this summer.

Juno award winning singer-songwriter-musician extraordinaire Cara Luft is that rare artist steeped in folk and traditional roots music almost from birth, yet willing to alter the fabric, stretch the boundaries and fearlessly bend genres and styles. A founding member of Canadian folk super-group The Wailin’ Jennys and the brainchild/bandleader of Winnipeg’s powerhouse duo The Small Glories, Luft deserves her solid reputation as one of Canada’s finest live performers whose engaging, down-home style comes wrapped in a delicious sense of humour. Connie can write; she can sing and her songs have helped define how folks think about the prairies, women and themselves. She weaves the sublime and the ridiculous into the fabric of every show. Connie Kaldor hails from Saskatchewan, Canada. She has toured around the world, won Juno awards and is a member of the Order of Canada as well as winning a Western Literature award. She has done it all as an independent; writing, singing, performing, building her following one song, one show at a time. She is the author of three award winning cd books for children. She has written musicals and music for films and web-series. But always it is her live shows that are the bedrock of her career.

A Walk In My Dream with Mike Stevens

Join Jaxon in conversation with one of Canada’s most established, prolific and respected musicians – Mike Stevens.

Mike Stevens is an award winning musician, composer and author living in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. He is the founder of ArtsCan Circle, a non profit organization that builds relationships with Northern Communities across Canada and Alaska using the arts as a tool for self expression and joy.

Mike has a powerful message and is a sought after performer, speaker, composer and educator. His book, Bluegrass Harmonica, has been distributed worldwide and provides instruction about his groundbreaking style of harmonica playing. He facilitates workshops for groups, corporations, and youth nationally and internationally. (He also likes salt and vinegar chips, way too much!)

Mike Stevens created a place for the harmonica in Bluegrass with his explosive and expressive playing. In 1988 while appearing at a Bluegrass festival in Georgia, Mike met Bluegrass legends Jim and Jesse and the Virginia Boys. When they heard Mike they invited him to play their show. After that performance Jim and Jesse told Mike he needed to perform at the Grand Ole Opry. Mike has now performed more than 300 times on the Grand Ole Opry stage and can count Roy Acuff -The king of Country Music – as one of his biggest fans.

Mike toured the world as a feature performer with Jim and Jesse for close to 15 years playing all the major Bluegrass festivals solidifying Mike’s position as the pioneer of Bluegrass harmonica. In 1991 Mike’s recording “Blowin up a Storm” was the highest selling release on Pinecastle Records. In 1994 Mike was named a Kentucky Colonel by the Governor of Kentucky for his contributions to Bluegrass music.

Mike signed with Borealis Recording Company in 2001. “Old Time Mojo” and the groundbreaking Canadian fiddle tune recording “The World is Only Air” were released on the Borealis label.

In 1999 Mike visited a Northern community in Canada that changed his life. Since that impactful visit, Mike has worked to bring arts and music to Indigenous youth. He founded non-profit ArtsCan Circle in 2002. ArtsCan builds relationships with Northern Communities across Canada and Alaska using the arts as a tool for self expression and joy.

A Prairie Girl’s Song with Kate Ferris

This episode of the Home Routes Podcast features an interview with Kate Ferris, who along with being an active musician, is also our Home Routes Ukulele teacher! Join Jaxon and Kate as they discuss dealing with Covid-19 realities pivoting to online classes, and more.

ABOUT KATE FERRIS: Manitoba musician Kate Ferris has been performing since – at the age of 5 – the bus she and her Ma were traveling in got stuck in a snowstorm and Kate proceeded to entertain the passengers (including 3 very nice Nuns) with her own songs and stories. (She would like to think that her material has improved greatly since then, but she DID get a chocolate bar from one of the Nuns, so who knows . . .)

After teaching Elementary Music in Thompson, MB for 11 years, Kate held her breath and quit her job to pursue her dream of performing. She’s been chasing that dream ever since – at concerts and festivals across Canada, on lanais in Hawaii, in pubs in the UK, and for an appreciative crowd in Puerto Rico (although none of them understood English!)

She’s performed with groups as diverse as the Blarney Band, Critter Family, Rodeo Riders, Canadian Content Theatre, and folk trio Small Rooms. She’s played gigs that range from being the act right after the local fair’s pet contest to twice being guest storyteller with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, to opening for Valdy, Ritchie Havens, and performing for the Prime Minister of Iceland!

Discovering the mighty ukulele in 2003, Kate fell in love with this wonderful instrument and since 2012 has been the ukulele instructor for the Winnipeg Folk Festival’s Folk School.

Before retiring from almost 30 years with the Manitoba “Artists in the Schools” program, Kate conducted workshops in over 200 Manitoba schools, has appeared nationally on television, CBC Radio and as a guest artist on various recordings. As well, she is a popular MC for conferences and public events, using humour and songs written specifically for the occasion.

Kate spent time in the studio working with award-winning producer Dan Donahue, and in September of 2015 was thrilled to release her first solo CD, “Marie’s Forest” to a sold-out crowd at The Park Theatre. (It only took thirty years . . .)

Now, one of the songs – “Prairie Girl’s Song” – has been illustrated by artist Mary Ann Tully and published by Friesen Printing as a children’s picture book.

Her playing can be heard on movie soundtracks such as HBO’s ‘The Jinx’, ‘Time Out of Mind’ with Richard Gere, Fox Searchlight’s ‘Another Earth’, ‘Dummy’ with Adrien Brody, etc. She performed with the Israel Philharmonic conducted by Zubin Mehta, with the Westchester Philharmonic, Royal Air Moroccan Symphony, Manhattan Chamber Orchestra etc., at prestigious concert halls such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and Madison Square Gardens. Natalia, who was chosen for the ‘Best of New York’ lists many times, received citations of honor from the New York City Council, the New York State Senate, New York State Assembly, NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg and a medal of honor from Paris, France.

Join Jaxon and Tim in conversation with Roy Forbes, a Canadian songwriting and performing icon who has thrived in the Canadian music scene for almost half a century. Roy talks about his new album “Edge of Blue”, the songwriting process, record collecting (thousands of 78s), memories of the Winnipeg Folk Festival and much more.

Roy Forbes is one of Canada’s best known and best loved songwriters and performing artists. He’s been at it for almost fifty years and has picked up some tokens of appreciation from his peers. There is a street named after him in his hometown of Dawson Creek in Northern B.C. and a star on Vancouver’s Granville Street where the names of the B.C. Entertainment Hall of Fame members are enshrined.
