Welcome to a transformative study of the Gospel according to Saint John. Known traditionally as the "High Eagle," John soars to theological heights to reveal the divinity of Christ in a way no other Evangelist does.

Our guiding thread through this Gospel is the Covenant. We explore how God, the "Strong Party," did not abandon His creation but entered it to restore a broken family bond. We will discover that Jesus is the eternal Logos who "tabernacled" among us, offering us the legal right to become children of God. Whether you are a lifelong Catholic or new to Scripture, join us as we encounter the Light that shines in the darkness.

This talk explores far more than a miracle story: it examines how Jesus publicly breaks the Sabbath, confronts the old covenant order, and reveals Himself as the true source of life, mercy, and healing. Along the way, we consider the meaning of the pool, the symbolism of the five porticoes and the thirty-eight years, the deeper reasons for the opposition of “the Jews,” and the spiritual paralysis that keeps us from rising when Christ commands us to walk. Beginning with the multiplication of the loaves, moving through Christ’s walking on the sea, and culminating in His shocking command to eat His flesh and drink His blood, this lecture shows how Jesus reveals Himself as the new Moses, the Lord of creation, and the true bread from heaven. Along the way, we explore covenant, testing, the poverty of the “weak party,” the meaning of the Eucharist, and Peter’s decisive response: “Lord, to whom shall we go?” A rich and challenging meditation on why the Eucharist is not a symbol to admire from afar, but a mystery into which we must enter.

We follow the movement from Martha’s confession — “I am the resurrection and the life” — to Mary’s tears before the tomb, then to the seventh and climactic sign: the Shepherd’s voice calling Lazarus out of death. But this sign does not simply produce joy. It summons the Cross. Lazarus lives, and the leaders resolve that Jesus must die.

Finally, we enter Bethany, where Mary anoints Jesus with costly nard, Judas hides greed beneath concern for the poor, and Lazarus himself becomes a dangerous witness. This lecture invites us to trust Christ in the delay, hear the Shepherd’s voice, and live as those whom Christ has called from death to life.

Jesus does not hurry to prevent Lazarus’s death. Instead, He waits, allowing death itself to become the place where the glory of God will be revealed.

Download the slides and notes here

(00:00) - Welcome and Lecture Overview

Gentiles seek Jesus; many within Israel refuse the Light; Jesus washes the feet of His disciples; and Judas goes out into the night. Against this darkness, Christ gives the New Commandment: “Love one another; even as I have loved you.”

This commandment becomes the covenantal law of the Church. Christ Himself is the Way to the Father, and the Father sends the Holy Spirit to dwell with the Church forever.
