This was… better than I feared? I was concerned the nostalgia would drive my enjoyment but it’s actually solid for a kids movie; very of its time. 7.5/10 — Al

Great voice acting, soundtrack, and visuals. Little lacking on the world building and character building. Overall a fun, and at times serious, animated movie with a satisfying ending. Yea, aggressive doesn’t cover half of it *I mean come on this is some solid wordplay Sorry folks, now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, let’s all take a deep breath, because that movie was an EXPERIENCE. That’s probably the best way to put: you don’t watch this movie, you experience it. It’s as intense as any movie out there; visually, audibly, emotionally, viscerally. And that beer? Well, it’s not all those things, but it’s pretty damn delicious. We appreciate what Alchemist has done with Heady Topper, and again here with Focal Banger. This movie is a trip, this beer is excellent, and we think the newest Flix & a Six was too, only on The Spinchoon!

Thor matters. We’re just as surprised as you are. This is already one of the top MCU movies in what is becoming a ridiculous catalog of titles. It’s also freaking hysterical. This isn’t a superhero movie, it’s an ensemble action comedy. I mean nonstop, laugh out loud funny comedy. So…. think Guardians of the Galaxy. Just don’t get it confused, they are not ripping this off. And that’s why this movie is worth watching, because if you’ve been listening to us, you know that making a different genre of movie is the only way the MCU can stay fresh. We have this conversation set against the backdrop of an incredibly delicious beer: Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar. This might rank among Anthony and Al’s top 3 for Flix & a Six beers. Of course, we open this all with some fun news items (Star Wars, Lord of the Rings (!!!), Justice League) from the movie landscape, so if you’re not down for that skip to around minute 50 for the Thor only (as if we don’t ramble) stuff. Who would have thought we’d be doing a Jackie Chan movie in 2017? Although, exactly what constitutes a “Jackie Chan Movie” seems to be up to debate, as one of our hosts may have had false expectations coming in to this one. Still, it’s good to see Jackie kicking ass on screen again. We got to discuss it while drinking one of the quirky Dogfish Head offerings: Flesh and Blood IPA. But that’s not all. Oh no. Episode 17: We Drink (but don’t drive) to Baby Driver

Baby Driver. Dogfish Head Beer to Drink Music to ’17 Tropical Blonde Ale, which is, per the labeling “A liquid soundtrack for welcoming warmer weather.” If you’ve seen the movie (which if you haven’t go see it now, then come back because we’re on a hot streak and this episode is gold) you know how the soundtrack is intrinsically tied to the movie. So beer and movie are a match made in heaven. As are the script, actors, set pieces, and music within the movie. It’s a rare cinematic achievement: a perfectly crafted film entirely fitting Edgar Wright’s style. Just like this episode is true to the Flix & a Six form: beer, movie, rambling, random references, Mass Effect (Plot Twist: it was brought up by Anthony this time!), and absurd tangents….. And Star Wars. Obviously….. ahem….. anyway…. NEW FLIX & A SIX IS BACK AFTER A HOLIDAY BREAK, ONLY ON THE SPINCHOON!

Trust us), we decided to spend some time discussing one of our favorite movies (although as Anthony alleged this one is no one’s favorite Star Wars). And we talked about some stuff in the rest of the Star Wars universe as well because we wanted to. It’s our show we’ll do what we want and you’ll like it. This discussion was made possible by the most fitting beer companion: Newburgh Brewing 5th Anniversary Ale. We debut a couple new aspects in the Flix & a Six universe in this episode: a full-on comedy movie topic and a live audience. The movie this week is Why Him?, featuring the odd pairing of Bryan Cranston and James Franco. Not exactly Abort and Costello in the pantheon of comedy duos, but damnit if they didn’t catch lightning in a bottle on this one. The two of them are the core of this comedy’s success, even if it’s the scene stealing Keegan-Michael Key who has the highest comedic highs. So in case you couldn’t put all that together: this movie is damn funny. As was our awkward inclusion of Al’s brother Dominick (well maybe not damn funny but it had it’s moments) as the aforementioned live audience; our very own peanut gallery. He also supplied us with our beer this week, Grey Sail Brewing Flagship Ale, a cream ale from Rhode Island. So many thanks to Dominick for his contributions this week. Episode 8: We face our fears with Stout hearts, and hunt down the Ghost within

We tread a little new ground here, as our choice of the new release Ghost in the Shell marks the first movie we weren’t fully simpatico in our desire to go see. Since Al was cautiously interested, but Anthony was much less so, it made for a different viewing and discussion experience. We open up the movie talk with a fun little tangent on the recent trends in movie trailers (it’s relevant, Ghost in the Shell followed the trend) before we get to the heart of the matter. Our discussion covered a wide range of topics, including the effects of expectation on our perception of a movie we were unsure on. We dabbled in some more world building talk (it’s no John Wick as Anthony would say), as well as the cinematography and visual aesthetic that makes this movie somewhat unique in the current movie landscape. Plus don’t get us started (this was probably our favorite part) on the cast, which is really where this movie was at its strongest. From the stars we know (Michael Pitt sighting!), to the relative unknowns (seriously how did it take Al that long to recognize Euron Greyjoy), this cast is the life of the party on screen. Finally, we made up for the trepidation going in by drinking a beer we were both really excited to try, the inaugural and inimitable Al’s Ales Reserve Label Russian Imperial Stout (Spoiler Alert: it was really good). Episode 7: We Arrive a Stone’s throw from our destination

We apologize, this isn’t the strongest title, but we’re sticking to our conventions, title quality be damned! Don’t let the title fool you though, because Arrival was a damn good movie, and we like to think we did a pretty damn good job talking about it (I know, little biased here, but it happens). If you haven’t seen this yet, go fix that quick because we really liked it, and then come back and listen. We (and, you know, the movie we’re talking about) give some thought to the important themes in the movie, such as the nature of time and communication, as well as the power and pitfalls of nonlinear story telling in movies. And if you’re worried that a movie about how we communicate might be boring, just remember this movie is about aliens. It’s definitely not boring, we talk all about Abort and Costello. For you beer fans (we’ll never forget about you) we try out Stone Stochasticity Grainiac. Weird name for a really good beer. We do a deep dive on both movies individually (Al was maybe, possibly faking his way through the Godzilla portion….. ok he was faking it, he saw a total of 8 mins of the movie). No faking it when it comes to Kong, though, as both of us really enjoyed it and get into the nitty gritty details of why it really works, especially over a recent miss like the Peter Jackson King Kong. Episode 5: We tackle the Sixpoints (or however many) of the Superhero movie industry

This week we did something a little different than our previous episodes. Instead of discussing a specific new movie (and/or its predecessor) we take a deep dive into the current, and future, landscape of the Superhero movie industry. Specifically, we spent most of our time on the MCU and DCEU. And it’s not like we’re the first people to trash the DCEU, but we like to think that we did it the best (who’s counting really?). Our anger at the DCEU, and our love for the MCU (look the acronyms up if you need to, I’m too lazy to type the words 8 times each), was fueled by the liquid stylings of Sixpoint Tesla and Jammer. That’s right we broke all types of Flix & a Six ground. Multiple beers for multiple movies. True innovators. We’ll be expecting our Edison Awards in the mail. Episode IV: We master build a consensus on Lego Batman, while taking flight on Falcon(er) wings

It is a period of civil war. rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. Ok sure that was a bad joke (we’re playing to the cheap seats here) but shit, if you haven’t realized by now that we are gigantically obsessed with all things Star Wars, I’m not sure even beating you over the head with the opening crawl will do it. Basically, if you hear “Episode 4”, and you don’t immediately think Star Wars, it’s probably not going to work out between us. It’s definitely you, and not us. Back on track, we talk about Lego Batman, and the Lego movie “series” in general, in this episode. Not just the Lego aspect either, as we also consider where it ranks among Batman movies period (spoiler alert, it’s better than most of the Batman movies). We also enjoy a Falconer’s Flight Extra IPA (brewed by resident homebrew enthusiast, Al) and give you our take on how that came out. Episode 3: We kill an absurd amount of….. time talking about the Heady John Wick saga

Actually, this is one of our shorter episodes (it’s still like an hour…. We like to talk). But instead of just a straight review of John Wick: Chapter 2, we spend the first half of the episode talking about the continuing expansion of the Wickiverse (yes I just made that up while typing, and don’t come at me if it exists somewhere on the internet, because I’m too lazy to check if someone already thought of this) and how they accomplish ridiculously good world building with minimal plot and exposition. Also, you know, bad ass fight choreography and stuff (that’s the technical term. Look it up). Of course, we do a spoiler heavy conversation in the second half of the episode (that’s what the 7 of you still with us are looking for right?). We also drink, enjoy, and rave about Heady Topper, from The Alchemist. For those of you who have heard of, but never had, Heady Topper, yea it’s good (seriously Josh we are in your debt for getting that for us). Episode 2: We take a road trip with Weapon X and Sir Charles, and pick up Jessica in Newburgh

Now that the 3-part saga that was our debut has concluded, it’s time to move on to Logan. In all seriousness, we spend the first half of the episode talking completely (mostly) spoiler free to give you a feel for how much we enjoyed the movie if you haven’t seen it yet. We also debuted a segment that we think will be a lot of fun for the pod, WILD SPECULATION™!, where we get into some theories on the recently announced title of Episode 8: The Last Jedi. Episode 1 - Part 2: We get lost in La La Land after a Copperhead bite

Well, at least this was closer to the idea we had trying to talk Oscars, as we fall down the rabbit hole that is La La Land. Naturally, that means we went off on a big ol’ tangent as Al hijacked the pod to talk about Cloud Atlas (get used to this it’s gonna happen a lot) and Mr. Nobody. Anthony was kind enough to indulge him. We reviewed Fordham Copperhead Ale (this endorsement is way less likely to happen) and we even made a (pathetic) effort to talk about the Oscar field as a whole, even though we only saw 2 of the movies that had significant nominations (sorry….. actually this is our pod we’ll do what we want). And yea it’s gonna be our second podcast, even though it’s the middle third of the first one…. So part 2. We’ll figure it out eventually I promise (I think).
