SHOW NOTES:

• Bully sticks really are made from beef penis.
• "Work for hire" is the situation that an illustrator like Kirby, or a session musician, might work under. He was paid cash for his work but didn't retain any ownership. At the time, the idea was that the work was ephemeral trash anyways; but now, years later, it's proven to be valuable.
• The Fourth World was Kirby's set of fantasy/science-fiction stories at DC. He got to do pretty much what he wanted and he went nuts with it.
• Mister Miracle was maybe the character that's most closely identified with Kirby. He's an escape artist refugee who lives in the suburbs and is married to an action heroine.
• Star Wars really seems to pull from Kirby's work.
• Doctor Doom is a very fun comic-book villain created by Kirby (and Stan Lee).
• Stan Lee worked with Kirby in the 1960s and co-created almost all of the early Marvel characters and stories with him.
• The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay is an acclaimed novel by Michael Chabon where one of the characters is based (partly) on Kirby.
• Here’s Kirby’s original drawing of Captain America punching-out Hitler.
• The Banshees of Inisherin is a 2022 film partly about legacy that explores the question “Does being a decent person matter?”
• Thundarr the Barbarian was a 1980s cartoon about a post-apocalyptic adventurer. Kirby did some design work and by all accounts was paid fairly and treated well.
• Kamandi was a post-apocalyptic comic about the last boy on Earth, an Earth now populated by talking animals. It seems like it was heavily influenced by Planet of the Apes, even though Kirby hadn’t seen the movie when he created the comic.
• Holy Mountain is a film directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky, financed partly by John Lennon, which is difficult to explain. It's surrealistic, absurd and mind-blowing, and it really seems Kirby-influenced.
• Kirby Krackle is a visual effect that Kirby was known for. If there was energy coursing through something, he might illustrate it with weird dots around it.
• The Neil Gaiman quote that Jake recites is from the book Kirby: King of Comics by Mark Evanier.
• O.M.A.C. (One Man Army Corps) is a truly bonkers comic written and drawn by Jack Kirby.
• It appears as if Glenn Danzig did know Kirby personally, and even worked with him. Here’s an interview that Danzig conducted with Kirby.
• Mezzo Mix is totally the most normal thing in the world.
• We discuss Kit-Kats in Japan, which have been incredibly successful there, in part because their name sort of sounds like "good luck" in Japanese. There are many, many variations on the traditional Kit-Kat flavor in Japan. Some of these have come to America as well.
• The Fantanas ads were a throwback to an earlier style of ads. The premise is that sexy babes with soft drinks show up and refresh people. Here's a good example, and here's one in Spanish.
• Other sodas discussed include Crush, Orangina, Surge & Josta.
• Jake drank is half-Fanta at the Loews Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Orlando, which is near Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville. He paired it with some Old Florida Original Gourmet Chips.
• The fever has really passed on hard seltzer. Now that the dust has settled, in the cold light of day we can say it was ranked fairly.
• Calamari isn't good, it's just a rubbery mass.
• Hulk Hogan was a boring wrestler who's had a really negative impact on the world.
• Phil thinks Aerosmith are dire, just absolute bottom level garbage, and he’s Phil has banned from his life with a zero tolerance policy.

• Valley Fever, also called desert rheumatism, is a respiratory disease that's thought to be caused by shark scales. It's endemic to Central and Southern California.
• Dungeons & Dragons is a role playing game invented by Gary Gygax and many others. It's really broad and open-ended but is the most popular game in that genre. In the game, players assume the roles of characters who have fantasy-themed adventures.
• Dungeons & Dragons was also the name of a cartoon made in 1985 as a tie-in for that game. It was about a group of teens that got transported to a different world and became fantasy adventurers with magic weapons. It had a kind of Narnia vibe.
• Gary Gygax was the creator of Dungeons & Dragons, although he didn't create it alone, and it grew out of other, similar games.
• JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings & The Hobbit which are foundational works in modern fantasy. Along with Conan, these books more or less created the genre/setting for Dungeons & Dragons.
• Alcoholics Anonymous is a mutual-aid group formed in 1935 in which members work together to help themselves recover from  alcoholism. Phil speculates that there are probably good AA Dungeons & Dragons games.
• Dice are polyhedral objects with numbers on the sides used to generate random numbers. The most commonly used dice are the six-sided dice you might use in a craps game or Monopoly or inside the Pop-o-Matic bubble of a Trouble game. Dungeons & Dragons requires different dice, 4-sided, 8-sided, 12-sided, 20-sided etc although now that Phil thinks about it, it's pretty unnecessary. With a few math changes, the game would work fine with 6-sided dice but people like to have that velvet dice sack. In prison, where dice are banned, Dungeons & Dragons players have to use other methods though.
• The Dungeons & Dragons movie looks like it has some pretty bad special effects, even for the time. Jeremy Irons appears to be having a fun time with it, though.
• SPOILER ALERT! Harry Styles plays Eros aka Starfox in Eternals.

• For the second time in recent episodes we discuss the songs of Chubby Checker (both "The Limbo Rock" and “Let’s Twist Again”).
• I Know What You Did Last Summer was a post-Scream 90s horror movie. The title of the sequel was I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, which Phil doesn't approve of.
• The Karina Longsworth podcast You Must Remember This had a recent episode about Flashdance & Risky Business as part of the current season which is about sex in movies (which used to be a thing). 
• Pittsburgh is a city in western Pennsylvania where the Allegheny & the Monongahela rivers meet to form the Ohio.
• Phil claims that old Popeye cartoons are much more Olive Oyl and Bluto-centric than you'd think. Some of the better Popeye cartoons aren't streamable because WB's not crazy about the themes. Phil's favorite is "Can You Take It" in which Olive gets a job as a nurse for an underground fight club.
• Thimble Theater was the original comic strip that Popeye sprung out of. 
• Freddy Krueger was a villain in horror movies in the 80s who attacks people in their dreams. Phil has only ever seen the third Nightmare on Elm Street, where Laurence Fishburne is an orderly at a hospital for traumatized kids and the kids flip the script on Freddy and defeat him.
• Phil mentions a French scientist who thought sleep was a distraction, and caused himself health problems by staying awake for long periods. This may have been something his parents told him as a kid to get him to sleep. He doesn't know why the scientist was French either.
• We talk about “sack hounds” and “sack artists”. Phil had always understood these to mean lazy people who could sleep wherever. After looking it up on WW2-era slang websites it seems like a “sack artist” is more like a womanizer whereas a “sack hound” is someone who tries to sleep.
• Beetle Bailey is a simple, gag-based comic strip with a military setting.
• Peanut butter is traditionally made of peanuts, smashed. That's why Phil's idea of selling roasted peanuts as extremely crunchy peanut butter makes sense. To Phil.
• Peanut oil is the oil that you can squeeze out of peanuts. In peanut butter jars, it separates and has to be stirred back into the peanut butter. What? You think it'd be better to just have a jar of peanuts so that the oil will stay put? Yeah me too!
• Almond butter is mashed-up almonds.
• The Got Milk? ad campaign which emphasized milk's usefulness as a lubricant, was kicked off by a Michael Bay-directed ad in which a guy has jammed so much PB&J into his mouth that he can't say "Aaron Burr" to win a radio contest. It's a very common problem.
• George Washington Carver invented about three hundred products derived from peanuts, but did not invent peanut butter.
• Peanuts are legumes that are eaten as food in the world and are especially popular in the USA, Nigeria and Thailand. Phil used to work with someone who was Thai and she said that Americans all eat rancid peanuts in contrast to Thailand where they eat fresh ones. We’re afraid she might be right!
• Phil went looking for pics of Lucy Pinder to link to and found this which is an NFT of a picture of her. We hope she gets a cut of this. Realizing that Lucy Pinder is a real person has taught Phil empathy.
• Boiled peanuts are a fantastic Southern food. They come in a wet paper bag (the kind that so many people have trouble fucking their way out of).
• Sam Elliott was on the Mission: Impossible TV show back in the early 1970s. He looked good even without the mustache. 
• We talk about a few movies, including The Big Lebowski, Power of the Dog, Young Guns and Tombstone. We also talk reflect on the Western and superhero movie genres in general.
• Here’s the Sam Elliott episode of WTF with Marc Maron.
• Malk was the name of an alternative milk in a gag on the Simpsons from 1995. It's now a real product.

• The Cops television show was a reality TV show in which a camera crew followed police around. The police departments got final approval of what was included in the show but it was educational to see what police thought made them look good. 
• District Attorneys are adjacent to cops, but aren't exactly cops.
• Training Day is a movie about Denzel Washington as a bad cop.
• Columbo is TV good cop who is completely non-violent and walks around being an unassuming disheveled genius and catching rich people who do murders.
• Lethal Weapon is a movie about two cops, one of whom is a "Lethal Weapon" because he's suicidal.
• Die Hard is a movie about an off-duty cop and an on-duty cop (who shot a child while on duty) learning to trust each other.
• Beverly Hills Cop a movie about a cop from Detroit who goes to Beverly Hills and puts a banana in the tailpipe of cops there.
• Movie cops are always good or at least necessary.
• England is a country where cops don't carry guns.
• We discuss gun ownership. In the USA, 3 in 10 adults say they own a gun. It's something like 40% of men and 20% of women.
• RoboCop is another movie about cops in which the police force has been privatized. It's fantastic and Ronny Cox from Beverly Hills Cop is fantastic in it as Dick Jones.
• The Pinkertons were founded as a sort of private police force to crush labor.
• Rod Lavers shoes are Adidas sneakers named for the great Australian tennis star Rodney Laver. The Australian Open is played in an arena named for him as well. They're fantastic shoes but the best ones are white and it's hard to keep them clean.
• Firefighters are people who fight fire. When Phil imagined a fire that hated firefighters he was thinking of a little stinker like this guy.
• Clowns are people trying to make other people laugh.
• Commandos are special military units.
• Theodore Roosevelt was a US President and an extremely colorful character who's personally responsible for a lot of death and pain. 
• The Last Starfighter was a nice little movie that's somehow never been remade. It's about a kid in a trailer park who, by virtue of being good at video games, gets recruited into an interstellar war.
• Howard the Duck is a movie about a duck who falls in love with Lea Thompson.
• Capitalism is the system we live in that makes ethical consumption impossible.
• Middle school is a necessary evil, a place to put young teens.
• Gambit is a fictional character, a superhero and member of the X-men. He wears a long trench coat and a weird thing on his head.
• Hoarders is a TV show in which the pain and mental illness of real people is mined for cheap thrills. 
• Steven Seagal is a movie star who's been credibly accused of sexual assault and has incredibly accused himself of being a yogi, a holy man, a secret agent, a Navy SEAL & a martial arts master.
• The British Royal Family are pretty bad.
• Jon Voigt had been really good in a lot of films. He's as low as he is almost entirely because he said some stuff Phil & Jake didn't agree with. Phil even liked his accent in Anaconda.
• Jenny McCarthy is pretty low on the list because she has some trash opinions.
• 48 Hrs. was followed by a sequel, Another 48 Hours. The second sequel, 127 Hours, is a big departure for the franchise.
• Flashdance is probably underrated by us. Karina Longworth went into why in a recent episode of You Must Remember This.

• Olivia James took over drawing the comic strip Nancy a few years ago and it's been a breath of fresh air. The old Ernie Bushmiller strips are extremely good also. 
• Garfield: His 9 Lives was a very strange Garfield project in the 80s.
• When talking about historical tax jubilees, Phil didn't really understand the mechanics too well but in Leviticus, God tells the Hebrews to forgive debts and free slaves every 50 years. It's unclear how this worked in practice. The idea wasn't unique to Hebrews, there are also records of jubilee proclamations in Babylon & Egypt.

Phil at some point got it into his head that she was a right-wing ideologue and it broke the spell she had over him. It's probably for the best, even if it wasn't true!
• We talk about the Spice Girls songs “Wannabe” and “2 Become 1”. The video featuring them in leather outfits is for the song "Say You'll Be There".
• 2 Live Crew are filthy Miami rappers who legally laid the foundation for all filthy rappers that followed. Mogul did an excellent series about them.
• We get into a little Chubby Checker discussion, including his songs “The Twist” and “Let's Twist Again”. Phil tells us about Don't Knock the Twist , is a movie that features Checker with a lot of associated acts including Dee Dee Sharp, who sings Mashed Potato time, one of Phil's favorites. Phil likes anything where the song tells you "It's the latest" or "it's the greatest" and Mashed Potato time does both.
• Robbie Williams is the cheeky chappie from Stoke.
• Harry Styles is Hazza?
• Dolly Parton is the Backwoods Barbie.
• Hank Williams is the Hillbilly Shakespeare.
• Phil mentions the 2013 Morgan Spurlock 3-D documentary about One Direction, This Is Us but then gets confused as to whether it exists or not. It does.
• Phil mentions the youtube video "A Scouser Tries The Wigan Kebab and Smack Barm Pea Wet" in which a guy from Liverpool travels 17 miles to Wigan to enjoy Smack Barm Pea Wet which is a roll with a potato that's been batter dipped and deep fried, served with the liquid that peas sit in. 
• Turkey Twizzlers were a UK meat product that used to be served to children at schools until celebrity chef Jamie Olive raised a fuss about them.
• Bovril is a beef broth concentrate, formerly known as Johnston's Fluid Beef. Phil remembers a guy saying it's served hot in a disposable cup.
• Kit-Kat is a candy that originates in England but really hit its stride in Japan where they make many variant flavors and generally appreciate the brand.
• Lucozade is a sports drink, roughly akin to Gatorade that was originally sold at pharmacies.
• Kebab stands are places where you can buy kebabs. Phil said we don't really have them in America but it's not really true. In his old neighborhood in Queens they were all over.
• Phil mentions a shocking ad for breakfast in a can he saw in a lad mag. He was unable to find images because when people are preserving and scanning lad mags, their priority is the photos of Lucy Pinder or Lucy Collett and then when that's done they'll eventually get around to the horrifying pictures of canned sausage and eggs. The product was probably ​​Hunger Breaks' All Day Breakfast.

• Sound of Metal is a great movie about deafness. You should watch it. We don’t mention it in the episode, but Coda is also a great movie about deafness (and especially deafness as culture). You should watch it too.
• Cyborgs is short for "cybernetic organism". Phil has a very loose definition of cyborgs that his family doesn't agree with. Phil claims that not only is someone with a pacemaker a cyborg but also someone with glasses, a cell phone or shoes.
• Phil claimed that The Ants won E.O. Wilson the Pulitzer prize but he was actually thinking of Tales from the Ant World.
• Leiningen and the Ants is a 1938 short story you probably remember from school here's the full text but, I hasten to add, it's of (looks left and right) dubious legality.
• Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is a former wrestler and current movie star, his second most famous move was the Rock Bottom. Here are ten examples of him performing the move. Phil had it confused with the People's Elbow, which goes off the turnbuckles. The Rock Bottom is what's called a "side slam".

• The Great Milenko is a devil figure in the Juggalo cosmology - "According to the group's mythology, The Great Milenko is a necromancer and illusionist who tries to trick individuals into greed and other such sins. He takes out the worst in an individual and creates powerful illusions in an attempt to cause them to become hedonistic and greedy. An honorable individual must fight his magic in order to make it to Shangri-La."
• Horrorcore is a genre that was a big deal in the 90s. It's pretty much what it sounds like. Horror-inflected rap music. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony were initially extremely horrorcore. They had a song called "Hell Sent" about invading hell and killing demons. Looking back now it was inescapable, from the Geto Boys ("Chuckie") to Ice-T ("pulse of the rhyme") to the Gravediggaz ("1-800-Suicide"). It's one of those things you don't realize is everywhere until years later when it's gone.
• American Juggalo is a great short film about the Gathering of the Juggalos. You should watch it.
• Busey movies discussed include The Buddy Holly Story, Point Break, Under Siege and The Gingerdead Man. We also talk about his appearances on such reality TV shows as I’m With Busey, Celebrity Rehab and Gary Busey Pet Judge.
• The Rock is Phil's favorite 90's action movie. People get it confused with Con Air but it's much better. All three stars (Connery, Harris and Cage) go all-out.
• Jake Busey is Gary Busey's son, he looks like his dad.
• Starship Troopers is a Paul Verhoeven film loosely based based on the film of the same name by Robert Heinlein. It's maybe the best anti-war movie of the past 50 years but the general public really showed their ass by missing the point.
• Is Gary Busey in Lethal Weapon? You bet your ass he is.

• One of our tweets got a like from DC the Brain Supreme of Tag Team, who of course brought you “Whoomp! (There It Is)”. Here’s the Geico commercial where they do a new ice cream-themed version of the song. We just realized DC shouts “Sprinkles!” at the end of the commercial, which probably has something to do with why he liked our tweet for the episode in which we rank cake sprinkles.
• When Phil said there was a woman who calls herself Jessica Rabbit, he was referring to Melyssa Ford, who is a model who used to be in a lot of rap videos. 
• Naturally, we talk a lot about movies, including other works by director John Hughes (Home Alone, The Breakfast Club) and many of the films that are already on the List of Every Damn Thing (Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Caddyshack, The Matrix, Trading Places, The Truman Show, Drumline, Star Wars). War Games is another movie where Matthew Broderick uses a computer to change his grades.
• There’s also Career Opportunities, the last Hughes teen comedy. It's not discussed much except by creeps who remember it mostly for the scene where Jennifer Connelly rides a hobby horse.
• The Prestige is the best Christopher Nolan movie, it's about rival Victorian magicians & about doubles, doppelgangers, brothers, etc. The best part is when Hugh Jackman's character hires an actor that resembles him to be half of the magic trick. The second best part is whenever Michael Caine opens his mouth.
• John Mulaney is a well-known stand-up comedian from suburban Chicago who kind of seems like Ferris Bueller. He was a writer for Saturday Night Live.
• Phil might have been confused as usual when he was talking about Abe Froman being the name of the character in the Palm Beach Story. He's called "the Weenie King" and he's a rich old man who knows where to buy meat cheap.
• Rampage was a video game where you can control one of three giant monsters that destroy a city. When they're defeated they turn back into naked humans. It was adapted into a movie starring Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson. 
• The painting that Phil mentioned was Georges Seurat's A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte which is at the Art Institute of Chicago. It was the inspiration for the musical Sunday in the Park with George, which Phil's never seen.
• Of course we devote time to the Sport-o’s, Motorheads, Geeks, Sluts, Bloods, Wasteoids, Dweebies and Dickheads.
• We went over the crimes of Jeffrey Jones in our Howard the Duck episode, in case you care to learn more.
• The Ferris Bueller sitcom was on TV at the same time as Parker Lewis Can’t Lose but didn’t last as long because it presumably sucked.
• Ferris Bueller’s Day Off gave the song “Oh Yeah” by Yello a real boost.

• Phil mentions the Simpsons episode “The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show”, maybe his favorite episode. It includes a short cartoon called The Beagle Has Landed in which Itchy and Scratchy are on their way to the fireworks factory but are interrupted by Poochie, who introduces himself by rapping. They never go to the fireworks factory.
• Jake tells a Warped Tour story about Rusty Pistachio from the band H2O flexed on some dudes from an unnamed mediocre punk band who were shooting very lethal fireworks very close to Jake and his friends.
• Smith Puget gets quite a lot of well-deserved compliments in the episode.
• The “little man” is the system used by the San Francisco Chronicle to review movies. Instead of stars there are pictures of a man in one of five positions: clapping wildly and jumping out of his seat, clapping, sitting attentively, asleep, or the dreaded empty chair. They should probably make some more specific ones like the guy's face is melting off because the movie is too trippy or he's eating a movie theater hot dog.
• The “Sonoma Aroma” is a phenomenon in which, on some days, in some parts of Sonoma County, California, there will be a smell of cow manure in the air. This is not to be confused with the Tacoma Aroma, which is caused by some kind of wood processing.
• Many windmills are hardly more than glorified dilapidated shacks (which is still high praise coming from us).

• Phil claims that cat names don't really matter because cats are mostly called "kitty" anyways and they're indifferent to any name you give them. You should just name your cat a word that you enjoy saying into the air.
• The Marvel superhero Wolverine will sometimes go undercover by wearing an eyepatch and calling himself “Patch”. This strains credulity because he has the most distinctive hairstyle ever. It's almost as if it's not real.
• Lots of other types of sandwiches and sandwich-type foods come up in the course of this episode, including cheese sandwiches, melts, quesadillas, crab sandwiches and of course shit on a shingle.
• The various sandwich fixins that get discussed include rye bread, pickles, onion rings, shredded lettuce and the delicious mouth-wrecking Dutch crunch bread.
• The grilled cheese sandwich that Jake made in preparation for this episode was Atika cheese from Tomales Farmstead Creamery on Josey Baker Country Bread. He made it in his Breville air-frying toaster oven.

• Robert’s Western World in Nashville is Jake’s favorite place to get a grilled cheese sandwich. The grill is right there behind the bar, and they totally don’t do the grilled cheeses on the same grill where they do the meat. In-N-Out grilled cheese (animal style) is usually pretty good too if it’s fresh off the grill, and Waffle House’s ain’t bad in a pinch either.
• The place in New York City that specializes in grilled cheese sandwiches seems to now be a national chain called Melt Shop.
• We shout-out some other sandwich purveyors during the episode, such as Nick’s Rockaway in Pacifica, CA, the Adeline Market deli in Burlingame, CA, The Bottle Shop in Ukiah, CA, and Woodhouse Fish Company & Molinari Delicatessen in San Francisco.
• Main Street Wine & Cheese– also in Ukiah, which is itself of course in Mendocino County– is sadly now either a taqueria or a Quizno’s.
• Jake couldn’t remember the fancy French-derived word for an open-faced sandwich. It’s “tartine”.
• Recipe websites are some of the worst because to game search engines they put the recipes down below and don't let you just scroll to the bottom. They then put a long story about themselves at the top and a lot of javascript ads so that when you're trying to make the recipe, the content keeps moving. It's awful and they should be ashamed. SFgate.com is similarly maddening.
• We continue the ongoing bread & butter pickle controversy that Jade Puget started back in Episode 78.
• Tuna on pizza is very good, it gets crispy! Here's an example on a recipe website that's not that bad.
• Are magic erasers made from crab shells? No they're not. Phil was wrong again!
• Steve1989MREinfo is the guy Phil mentioned who unboxes old (sometimes extremely old) military rations and eats them.
• Canadians wear poppies on Remembrance Day (November 11th).
• Tulip mania is a classic case– maybe the classic case– of a speculative bubble. It's been thoroughly documented elsewhere but Phil enjoyed the movie Tulip Fever which takes you inside the tulip futures auctions in a way an economics textbook can't do.
• Hetch-Hetchy water is the best water. People who live in San Francisco get it right out of their taps.
• All the news article headlines about Andy’s bandmate Chuck Platt getting hit by a car cite his other band, not Seized Up (the one he’s in with Andy). We’re glad to hear Chuck is recovering nicely.

You would have wanted to share it with your grandchildren every fucking Christmas for the next hundred years. The finished film was a piece of unadulterated, unmitigated shit."
• Bill Murray voiced the titular role in the Garfield movie (and the sequel Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties). He agreed to do it because he saw it was written by Joel Cohen and thought it was Joel Coen (who made– with his brother– Raising Arizona, Miller's Crossing, the Big Lebowski, Hudsucker Proxy and Fargo). 
• The documentary that Jake watched about Murray’s real-life antics is called The Bill Murray Stories: Life Lessons Learned from a Mythical Man.

• Jade and Jake are both proud graduates of Mendocino College, where they could be found playing Terminator 2: Judgment Day pinball in the Eagle’s Nest circa 1993.
• There’s some talk of The Crappy, which was the name given to the house (in our hometown of Ukiah, California) where Jake lived and all his friends hung out.

This sense allows individuals to view themselves as being the same, despite the tremors induced by time and environment.
• Jake was the lead in the musical Li'l Abner in high school. Phil was in the play too in a small role. The end of one of Jake's songs was Phil's cue to come on the stage, so Phil listened to Jake sing it many times and sometimes gets it stuck in his head.

• Phil ponders on the nature of Thomas' sentience, and whether his consciousness is a gestalt of the train itself and the humans that operate it. Jake compares it to Voltron.
• Sir Tophamm Hatt is originally from The Railway Series books by Wilbert & Christopher Awdry, but our frame of reference is mostly the Thomas & Friends TV show (featuring, of course, the titular star Thomas the Tank Engine).

• Phil looked up people pronouncing “human” like “yu-man” and apparently it's how people in NYC, Philadelphia and some places in Ireland say it. Phil is from rural California and although he used to live in NYC, he moved there as an adult.
• This clip features a scientific explanation of how Paul Bunyan and Babe the Big Blue Ox created the Grand Teton mountain range by roughhousing.

The eruption in question was that of Mount Tambora in 1815 (the Year Without a Summer was the following year). It’s also hypothesized that a similar thing happened in the 6th Century.
• Joe Vs. the Volcano is a 1990 film by John Patrick Shanley (Moonstruck) starring Tom Hanks & Meg Ryan (in multiple roles). It's a fun movie that lost a lot of money.
• Phil talks about underwater animals that survive from “geothermal” heat, but the real term is "hydrothermal vent". These animals have a whole little ecosystem that doesn't need sunlight. They live in one of the few truly alien environments on Earth.
• Jake mentions the use of McLean’s song in Black Widow, but we can’t remember the name of the character Yelena Belova.
• “The Day the Music Died” is a reference to Feb. 3, 1959, when Buddy Holly, Richie Valens & Big Bopper died in a plane crash. 
• Jake mentions the 1969 Altamont Free Concert, which is considered one of the end-markers of the 1960s. He incorrectly refers to the killing of a woman at the concert, when in fact it was an eighteen-year-old man (named Meredith) who was stabbed to death. Three other people also died at the concert.
• Songs we compare “American Pie” to include “Black Betty” by Ram Jam, “Turn! Turn! It’s built on an old melody ("the Arabian Riff") that was brought to America for the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. This melody is often used whenever there is belly dancing or snake charming going on. Phil had assumed that the song was about the Folies Bergere. Kesha used it in 2010.
• Jake heard legendary comics writer Chris Claremont discuss the characters Mister Sinister & Gambit on this episode of Screw It, We’re Just Gonna Talk About Comics. 
• Surge was a real soda in the 90s. Jooky was a fictional soda that Sprite invented in the 90s so they could contrast their own brutal honesty against Jooky's lies. The problem was that the fake ads for Jooky made us want it. 
• Phil's wife Beth is from Stockton, CA (aka “The 209”), well-known for having the deepest inland seaport on the West Coast and having the second-oldest symphony in California.

• Harry Styles has a role in Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk. It's not a major role, but it's bigger than the role of Guy Looking at Camera.
• Charli XCX is a pop star and songwriter from the UK. You know her voice from the hooks on "I Love It" and "Fancy". Phil appreciates her but doesn't know the name for what her fans call themselves (a la Harry Styles' “Stylers”) so he's kind of noncommittal in his fandom.
• Harry Styles’ fingernail polish line is called Pleasing and the pre-sale is already sold out.
• We make the obvious comparison of Harry Styles to Prince, and express doubts as to whether Styles is a songwriter on the level of Prince. Jake looked into it, and found that Harry Styles is in fact a songwriter (including songs for other artists), but unlike Prince he doesn’t appear to have sole credit on any songs. Also, he’s nowhere near as prolific a songwriter as Prince (at least so far).
• Natalie is right when she says Billy Porter wore the Christian Siriano tux dress design to the Oscars in 2019. 
• Here’s the Vogue Magazine Harry Styles story that we discuss.
• “Hungry Heart” was written by Bruce Springsteen for the Ramones. If you listen to the song, you can hear how he sings it sort of like Joey Ramone and you can also imagine how Joey Ramone would have sung it. People have tried to recreate it. Phil likes to imagine it would have sounded like a song on End of the Century. It's not clear why they never recorded the song.
• According to Andrew Dice Clay, My Cousin Vinny was developed as a vehicle for him, but when The Adventures of Ford Fairlane flopped, they made it with Joe Pesci instead. In an impressive feat of inference and detective work, Phil and his wife figured this out by themselves. She said that it seemed like the part was written for someone younger and they just wracked their brains thinking of Italian-American comedic actors from the early 90s until they figured it out.
• Pee-Wee Herman maybe could have worked playing the title role in My Cousin Vinny but probably he shouldn't have done Italian-Face.
• We briefly discuss the Insane Clown Posse and how our podcast is pro-Juggalo.
• Bill Irwin is the king of clowns.
• Oscar-winner Julianne Moore plays a sexy clown in The Ladies’ Man.
• “Tears of a Clown” by Smokey Robinson is one of the greatest pop songs to ever be recorded.
• Here’s the Cecily Strong clown bit that was on Saturday Night Live.
• Bianca del Rio is the winner of Season 6 of Rupaul’s Drag Race and is often referred to as the “Clown in a Gown”.

• Pickle Family Circus was a troupe in San Francisco in the ‘70’s and is said to have brought back the circus trend. 
• The Man Who Laughs is a 1928 German film. Conrad Veidt's look in the title role is where the look of the Joker from Batman was pulled from in 1940. 
• None of us could say for sure what the capital city of Tennessee is. It’s Nashville. 
• Jake was wrong when he said San Francisco was never the capital of California. It was temporarily made the capitol in 1862 while Sacramento suffered from flooding. There was naver a capital building in San Francisco, though; the state legislature was held at the Merchants’ Exchange Building during the brief tenure in S.F.
• The I Love Lucy episode featuring Pepito the Clown that Jason refers to was actually a pilot episode that never aired during the original run of the show, and was apparently lost for decades.
• We ponder whether the term “hobo” is offensive, and decide that it isn’t. But we might be wrong.
• Violator from Spawn is a pretty sucky character.

• The SF Chronicle’s little man dates all the way back to the 1940s!
• Sir Patrick Stewart is the true star of Star Trek: the Next Generation. When he's not on screen Phil & Jake immediately lose interest.
• Phil’s feelings towards Data probably aren’t going to date well. 
• In related news, Sophia the android (who, of course, you can follow on twitter) probably wouldn’t enjoy our episode on the uncanny valley effect very much (because she’s a robot and can’t experience enjoyment).
• Because the episode wouldn’t be complete without it, we do mention both the Borg and the character of Q (no relation to QAnon).
• There are channels on YouTube of just ambient starship background noise. Here's one of the ship from Star Trek: the Next Generation.
• In Star Trek: TNG the crew of the ship sometimes go into a virtual reality type room for training or recreation, called the Holodeck. They solve mysteries as Sherlock Holmes, etc… whatever they have wardrobe and sets for at Paramount. Phil doesn't like it because the whole point of watching a TV show about travelling through space would presumably be to see people traveling through space. If he wanted to see a Sherlock Holmes-based TV show he'd watch one of those.
• Melissa has some real issues with the TNG episode “Sub Rosa” in which Dr. Crusher falls in love with her dead grandmother’s candle ghost lover.
• We mention the character Geordi La Forge, who was born without sight but futuristic technology allows him to see.
• Phil's wonderful wife Beth mentioned that Deanna Troi's hair is not her real hair. This is the latest in a series of outrages along the lines of when she told him that Kiefer Sutherland is wearing a wig in the Lost Boys (which is partially true) and that Lynda Carter's butt was padded in Wonder Woman.
• Jake tried out the Harvey Wallbanger at Whitechapel, a London-themed steampunk-adjacent gin-centric cocktail bar in San Francisco.
• One of us claims that Galliano-- the liquor most known for its use in the Harvey Wallbanger-- is also used to make a Sex On the Beach, but afterwords we couldn’t find any recipes supporting that claim.

• We briefly discuss ventriloquism, including mention of Candice Bergen’s father Edgar Bergen, who was an actor, comedian and Vaudeville and radio ventriloquist. He was a big star, bigger than it's possible to imagine someone being when his main thing is throwing his voice through a dummy that sits on his lap ON THE RADIO. Even on TV or movies it doesn't really make sense because all the sound comes from the same speaker so throwing his voice doesn't seem that impressive and editing can be done anyways. It just seems like the kind of thing that only would work in live performances but here we are! His show was on the radio for 20 years!
• Phil rode a bicycle across the USA from Yorktown, VA to Vallejo CA. He's a very private person and doesn't like to talk about it much unless you mention bikes, the USA, Virginia, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, California or any of the geographical features therein.
• Jake rode a bike around the island of Losinj, Croatia.
• Jake refers to wearing a “turtle shell brace” after his bike accident, but it’s maybe more commonly called a clamshell brace.
• Madison Square Garden is the World's Most Famous Arena. It sits on top of Penn Station between 7th and 8th Ave in Manhattan. It's sort of ugly and it replaced the old Penn Station which was an architectural marvel. We mention it because Phil notes that the original MSG was the site of many indoor bicycle races (and was actually on Madison Avenue which made a lot more sense). 
• Notable scatters discussed include Steven Tyler (of Aerosmith), David Lee Roth, Cab Calloway and Ella Fitzgerald. 
• Bone Thugs-N-Harmony are Cleveland rappers who were signed and promoted by the late Eazy-E before his death. They were really influential in their sing-songy delivery (which you could hear in Crucial Conflict, Three Six Mafia & Nelly)  and their post Geto Boys "horrorcore" angle (similar to Gravediggaz). Their biggest successes were probably Crossroads, a meditation on death and First of the Month, a celebration of plenty. They once filmed a video of their trip to Switzerland which was made to get Phil Collins to agree to let them sample him for their song Home.
• Here's the Bone Thugs sketch on Saturday Night Live that Jake mentions.
• MC Skat Cat was an animated cat that would rap in the early 90s. Most famously with Paula Abdul. Phil just listened to "Skat Strut" for the first time and enjoyed the Earth, Wind & Fire sample.
• “Scatman (ski-ba-bob-ba-dop-bop)” by Scatman John is not to be confused with Scatman Crothers.
• The Fu-Schnickens were a hip-hop trio that were very difficult to understand but nonetheless quite impressive because they rapped at double (maybe triple?) speed. Chip-Fu in particular was just incredible even if the speed of the words made you dizzy. Phil follows him on twitter but he just tweets at regular speed, sadly. As a white kid from rural California with zero cultural context, Phil didn't understand that he was hearing a Caribbean thing. Their Ring the Alarm samples the Tenor Saw classic. They're mostly remembered now for making Can We Rock with Shaquille O'Neal.
• Phil might have taken it too far to say Doo Wop music was scatting. The second half of "Sh-Booom" is a good example of what he was referring to though.
• “Heebie Jeebies” by Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five is, as of 2021, in the public domain. Phil’s thinking we should make this our show's theme song.
• Both New Orleans and Queens can claim Louis Armstrong. He was from New Orleans but he moved to Corona, Queens (very close to where the Mets play) and lived there from 1943 until his death in 1971. 
• The Harder They Fall on Netflix features “Broader Than Broadway” by Barrington Levy, which is a fantastic song.
• We discuss “Panama” by Van Halen. Phil says that the lyrics to this song don't matter at all and they might as well be scatting.
• Here’s that twitter thread of old paintings with people feeding cats like babies.
• How many shirtless men wearing elaborate angel wings, gold lamé shorts & furry cha-cha heels are really just actual angels?

• We talk about the 1980s cartoon Heathcliff and the Catillac Cats, which Phil only ever saw the second segment of growing up, because of the scheduling. The first segment was about Heathcliff doing the kind of things he does in the newspaper comic strip. The second segment was about a group of cats who lived in a junkyard, led by Riff Raff, an orange cat who wears a big white hat.
• In South America, guinea pigs are frequently eaten, and are called cuy, probably named after the sound they make. Phil mentions seeing them in the frozen food section at Trade Fair supermarket in Astoria Queens, NY.
• There was an escaped capybara in California, and friend-of-the-pod Victor made twitter for it.

• Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser is a book about fast food in America. We read it a long time ago but we remember it was heavy on the Carl's Jr. One of the last chapters is about how everything they just said about how bad the industry is doesn't really apply to In-N-Out - they pay their workers better, produce better quality food, etc.
• Shake Shack is a fast-casual hamburger chain based in NYC (which is now nationwide). According to Phil, the burger is better than In-N-Out but it costs three times as much. 
• We mention Taqueria Diana in Williamsburg again. Go there.
• Dick's is the place where the cool hang out. The swass like to play, and the rich flaunt clout. It's a burger place in Seattle. In an alternate universe it took off in popularity instead of In-N-Out.
• Sir Mix-A-Lot is a Seattle-based rapper and HAM radio enthusiast.
• Waffle House is an all-day breakfast chain based in the Southeast. When fights happen at Waffle House, they often end up on social media.
• Veggie Grill is a vegetarian fast food chain on the West Coast, as well as in New York and Massachusetts. It’s pretty much wherever coastal elites like to be, and it’s good food.
• Taco Time is a Mexican fast food chain in the western U.S., but not California.
• El Pollo Loco deserves to be ranked later. It's Phil's favorite fast-food chain.
• "Thighvertising" came up in Phil's search for portmanteaus. He admits Jake was right it should be called “adverthighsing”.
• James Joyce coined the term “Scandiknavery” in Finnegan's Wake'. It's pretty specific but we’re looking forward to using it. 
• Phil thinks “pegacorn is” a bad one because "Winged Unicorn" just sounds better.
• Other portmanteaus discussed include “bodacious”, “throuple”, “guesstimate” and “chillax”.

• The Kurt Vonnegut story Phil was talking about was Harrison Bergeron. Full text of the story is here, it's very short. It's been adapted several times for TV and movies. It's the kind of science-fiction story that probably gets taken the wrong way a lot.

• Key Lime pie is brought up. You don't need limes from Key West to make these pies, just use regular limes.
• The Stephen King audiobook that the populist Phil talks about is 11/22/63. It was made into a movie on Hulu. Phil's not a Stephen King guy really but he likes time travel stories. This book is about a portal that opens up to a particular town in Maine on the same day. A guy who owns a hamburger place goes into the past and buys the same meat over and over from this town in Maine to bring back to the present to serve to his customers. Wait, maybe that's Stephen King telling on himself!

• DuckTales is a Disney cartoon adventure show about Donald Duck's nephews and uncle going on adventures. The original 1980s run was heavily based on the 1950s comics that taught Phil how to read. Phil's son watches the new series which features Paul F. Tompkins as Donald's cousin, Gladstone.

• Before recording this episode, Jake had the best onion ring of his life at Big Kel’s in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
• Daphne & Velma is a live-action movie from 2018 about the two girls from Scooby-Doo solving mysteries without the dead weight of the dog and the two boys. I think it might be a prequel too since they're in high school and it's our understanding that they are college age in other depictions.
• Garfield Minus Garfield (Phil got the name wrong) was a series of photoshopped Garfield comics that removed Garfield from them.
• Hanna-Barbera was behind maybe half of all American-produced cartoons in the second  half of the 20th century. A lot of the studio's work was real trash although kids had no better choices back then so they have fond memories of it. We don't know how they didn't get sued for basing their cartoons so obviously on actual people. Fred Flintstone for example was based on Jackie Gleason.
• Vandals were a Germanic people living in late-Roman times who were characterized years later by renaissance and early-modern historians as being all about pointless destruction. Phil was wrong when he claimed that "Vandalism" was coined in Roman times, the term wasn't invented until the 1790s. 
• Hobo graffiti are glyphs that help hobos get by in the world.
• Here’s the more-respectable anarchy symbol that Jake saw in Spain.
• Here's the anti-graffiti wall from Demolition Man.
• Here’s Nic Cage's friend's son writing “FART” on the wall in Raising Arizona.

• Sitcoms are comedies where the characters carry over from episode to episode but are put in different situations like "Jack makes a date with two girls for the same night" type shit. • We get a bit sidetracked with Fatty Arbuckle. The book Phil mentioned about him was I, Fatty by Jerry Stahl who also wrote Permanent Midnight which is in part about being a junkie while being a writer on the sitcom Alf.

• Hentai is, generally speaking, pornographic anime.
• Pokemon is maybe the most popular anime there is in the US. Phil's kid loves it.
• Kiki’s Delivery Service is a fantastic movie about a young witch trying to make her way in life. The voice of the cat in the English dub of it is Phil Hartmann's last role.
• The Little Mermaid is a Disney movie that's very short and came out the same year as Kiki's Delivery Service and really suffers in comparison.
• Other anime discussed include Sailor Moon, Ninja Scroll, My Neighbor Totoro and Princess Mononoke.
• Hanna-Barbera is the animation studio that created Scooby-Doo and many other cartoons, now owned by Warner Brothers. Their work in the 60s and 70s was usually pretty dull. It seemed like it was made by people who had contempt for their audience and maybe themselves.
• Here’s the Kewpie ad mentioned by Jason.
• Hatsune Miku, Jake's one-time employer, is a Vocaloid software voicebank developed by Crypton Future Media, represented by a hologram of a 16-year-old girl with long, turquoise twintails.
• Jessica Rabbit is getting a Disneyland makeover. 
• Song of the South is buried deep in the Disney vault and it's impossible to imagine Disney ever releasing it, but here’s a podcast detailing it’s sordid past.

• Masahira Mori is a robot expert and professor (the ASIMO robot was designed by one of his students).
• It should never be doubted that Jake has read Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus.
• The Final Fantasy movie is an oft-cited example of the uncanny valley effect. It's an animated movie made entirely with CGI, like a video game cut-scene, and audiences were unsettled by the creepy dead eyes.The Beowulf movie has a similar vibe.
• Pokemon of course doesn't go for photorealism, that's why it's universally beloved.
• In an episode of The Simpsons, Homer gets a pet lobster who looks to Homer like this, whereas other characters see the lobster like this.
• Boston Dynamics makes robots that move in human-like ways.
• There's a character in Ted Lasso played by Brett Goldstein (who just won an Emmy for the role). Many viewers thought this guy didn't exist and was a CGI creation. It seems ludicrous until you see this picture of his character, he looks like a FIFA video game character.
• Breath of the Wild is a Nintendo game that's beautiful but not photorealistic. It bypasses the uncanny valley.
• Star Wars tried CGI versions of Carrie Fisher and Peter Cushing in the same movie. It seems gross and scary to Phil (unlike C-3P0 and R2-D2).
• Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation was a real human actor deliberately playing a robot who seemed vaguely unnatural. Phil missed the point of any stories about him because he looked different.
• Charlie XCX is a pop star who's worked with PC Music which is a hard-to-explain collective / label that navigates the uncanny valley of music (if that exists) by making aggressively fake-sounding music and wallowing in artifice. The way she (or any public figure) manages her persona is tied up with UV-related ideas. In looking for a proper clip of her to link to we found this news story about how her record label is pushing her to be more "real" and she would prefer to be less real! 
• Drum machines are like this too. The 808 kick drum doesn't sound real, that's why it's better than some other more real-sounding synthesizers.
• Here's the biting dolls scene from Barbarella.
• The Polar Express is a deeply cursed movie and features an uncanny valley hall-of-fame performance by Steven Tyler as a scatting Christmas elf.
• The Matrix Reloaded had a big fight scene which had been promoted ahead of the release of the film but when the movie came out it was unsatisfying and weightless, and it didn't help that it came out around the same time as Kill Bill Vol. 1, which had a massive fight scene with real stakes and actual physicality.
• REI’s headquarters is in Kent, WA (not Bend).
• While in Bend, Jake picked up a hazy IPA from Immersion Brewing. It paired pretty well with the Impossible Burger that he got from the Incred-A-Bowl food truck.
• Les Schwab was the founder of a chain of tire retailers in the Western US. Phil is probably conflating the permanent tire fire on the Simpsons with an event in the 90s in Oregon where there was a real tire fire and he assumed that because it involved tires and Oregon, it had something to do with Les Schwab.
• Our vague recollection of some sort of some kind of lava cave attraction near Bend was surely about the Lava River Cave.

• The Panama Canal was completed in 1914 (the Suez Canal was completed forty-five years earlier in 1869).
• Turns out it was actually TR’s dad (TR senior) who was one of the founders of the American Museum of Natural History, not TR. 
• Lamarckian evolution, as we discussed, is a discredited idea of evolution where acquired characteristics are inherited. The classic example is a giraffe. Lamarck explained that a giraffe's neck is long because its ancestors stretched their necks to get leaves and passed the longer necks along to their descendants.
