Local Election Outcomes in New York and Pennsylvania

In New York’s 19th Congressional District, Democrat Josh Riley is projected to reclaim the seat from Republican incumbent Marc Molinaro.

For the 51st State Senate District, incumbent Republican Peter Oberacker successfully defended his seat against Democratic challenger Michelle Frazier.

In the 100th Assembly District, Democrat Paula Kay emerged victorious, keeping the seat for her party by defeating Republican Lou Ingrassia Jr.

Across the state line in Pennsylvania, in the 8th Congressional District, Republican Robert Bresnahan leads incumbent Democrat Matt Cartwright, suggesting a possible shift in party control. 

Additionally, in Pennsylvania’s 139th House District, incumbent Republican Jeff Olsommer retained his seat, defeating Democrat Robin Skibber.

Radio Catskill spoke to local political leaders Anne Hart, chair of the Sullivan County Democrats, and Greg Goldstein, chair of the county's Republican committee on Election Night results. 

Molinaro talked about his commitment to bipartisan economic initiatives aimed at supporting local communities. Riley, on the other hand, talked about the need for campaign finance reform and underscored his support for healthcare access and reproductive rights.

The event gave voters insights into each candidate’s priorities and vision for addressing the community’s pressing issues, ahead of the upcoming general election on November 5, 2024.

Moderated by Mariel Fiori, co-founder and director of La Voz and host of La Voz con Mariel Fiori on Radio Kingston, the event tackled important questions about political engagement and representation.

They discussed key dates and deadlines voters should be aware of before heading to the polls, as well as the measures being implemented to ensure a fair and secure election in Ulster County this November.

Focusing on issues affecting the district, including economic growth, healthcare, and job creation, Cartwright emphasized his efforts to support local industries and his stance on protecting Medicare and Social Security—central themes in his campaign against Republican challenger Rob Bresnahan Jr.

The race is considered one of the most competitive in the state, reflecting the district's swing nature.

The debate, produced by a regional media consortium including WAMC and WNYT NewsChannel 13, allowed voters to hear the candidates' positions on key issues like the economy, healthcare, and infrastructure, providing a direct comparison of their visions for the district's future. 

In the treasurer’s race, Democrat Erin McClelland is challenging Republican incumbent Stacy Garrity. For auditor general, Philadelphia State Representative Malcolm Kenyatta, a Democrat, is running against Republican Tim DeFoor, who currently holds the office. Meanwhile, the attorney general race is an open contest between Democrat Eugene DePasquale and Republican Dave Sunday.

Stephen Caruso from Spotlight PA and Chris Borick, a political science professor and pollster from Muhlenberg College, discuss the candidates' backgrounds, campaign platforms, and the importance of the offices they are seeking.

Having recently retired as the director of the Pike County Area Agency on Aging, Skibber is running on the Democratic ticket against Republican candidate: Incumbent Representative Jeff Olsommer from Sterling in Wayne County.

Oberacker was first elected in 2020 amid the global pandemic and he previously held roles on the Otsego County Board of Representatives, where he chaired the Public Works Committee, served as vice-chair of the Administration Committee, and was involved in Human Services, Negotiations, and Inter-Governmental Affairs. 

Prior to that, he was the Maryland, New York Town Supervisor and served on the town board. 

This election, he faces a challenge from Democrat Michele Frazier.

Frazier will face incumbent Republican Senator Peter Oberacker. 

A former Oneonta City Council member, Michele now resides in Delhi, balancing multiple roles: Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at SUNY Delhi, real estate agent, and mother of three sons.

Josh Riley is challenging incumbent Representative Marc Molinaro. This is the second time these two have faced off in a congressional race. 

The seat they are vying for is among the most competitive districts in the nation. Folks across the country are keeping an eye on New York’s 19th as it’s one of four New York seats that flipped two years ago,  giving republicans a narrow majority in the house.

The district spans parts of the Catskills, Hudson Valley, Southern Tier, and Finger Lakes. 

Congressman Molinaro, who has a background in public service as a former mayor and Dutchess County executive, now faces a rematch in the 2024 election against Democrat Josh Riley, a Harvard-educated attorney and former congressional aide. Their 2022 contest was tightly fought, with Molinaro securing a narrow victory.

Kay is an experienced lawyer who has served various town and planning boards throughout Sullivan County for many years, and also served as Aileen Gunther’s first Legislative Director.
She currently resides in Rock Hill, NY.
