Additional notes: Bit of behind the scenes info - we all realised we couldn't do our normal recording day, so this episode became a bit of a mission to schedule. Fingers on nodules, everyone - it's the Ood Cast's semi-regular quiz show format, this time hosted by the redoubtable Laura Sigma.

But what has Loz got in store for her co-hosts? Fiendish musical offerings? Insane leaps of pure fiction that bear little to no resemblance to rational thought? A bit where language breaks down completely?

You bet your sweet brain cells she does. All that and more besides.

Who will win? And what does that say about that person exactly?

Experience the game show that Laura herself describes as "pretty mental".

She was just a girl. A girl with long legs and an even longer memory. And the skinny guy- fading from the corners of her vision like a puddle disturbed by a footstep - was a nurse. They called him "Mr Sweetdreams" on the night shift because his use of topical anaesthesia was legendary.

She could still hear voices on the wind from the past - talk of dames, plot holes and dry towels, of laughter, longing, loss and a shadowy character spoken of in whispers as The Moff. Why did he enjoy inflicting pain on those who loved him? Was he a misanthrope? A genius? Or just a really twisted scotsman?

What ever he was, she knew she had to get out of town - and fast. But where could she run from that creeping grey menace? Was it ageing or angels that she feared? Was it even fear at all - or the urging of something even more primal - that drove her forward. She shut her eyes - stretched out her pale hands - and gave chase.

The surface of the cube is cold to the touch. Cold but with something surging behind it, like a heart beat. 

Like a storm.

You run your fingers along its hard edges, trying to discern something of its function in its form but come up blank. Your mind can't wrap itself around the concept of it. Too advanced, too alien.

You turn to leave and that's when it hums to life, glyphs picked out in a pulsating blue flicker across its dark surface. And that's when you understand, that's when you hear - a history of Earth in five waves of a sonic screwdriver, real lions at Nelson's column, the bonobo tariff, four, mad chattering voices uniting in praise…

You turn and run but already you know it's too late; can already feel the hairs rising on your neck as the bolt of electricity arcs across the void and connects with your heart. And as you slip into the darkness beyond your last thought hangs for a moment in the fading theatre of your subconscious …

That podcast was totally worth it.

When I was a child, my favourite story was about a podcast that went on forever. A podcast packed with tales of the Old West, talking hammers and a double macchiato and cactus cake meal deal.

A podcast that came from the internet.

By the time this episode arrived, the listeners of the Ood Cast were used to the strange and the impossible. But were they ready for guest stars from Radio Free Skaro, The Two Minute Timelord, The Doctor Who Podcast, Radio Rassilon, The Doctor Who Book Club and The Minute Doctor Who Podcast?

Where they came from didn't matter, as a man once said "You can find them all at www.doctorwhopodcastalliance.org".

Do I believe the story? I don't know. But next time you're on the internet, ask someone why they don't have a marshal or a sheriff or a policeman there?
 
"Because that would be almost impossible to enforce in a global digital community" they'll say.
 
And then they'll smile like they got a secret.
 
Like they got their own special podcast to listen to. Their very own podcast that came … from the internet.

Riddell pushed his way through the undergrowth, the thick, verdant leaves of the jungle tugging at his shirt sleeves and the exposed skin beneath. An array of flying insects buzzed ceaselessly around him, drawn by the salty tang of the sweat pooling in the furrows of his forehead and the shifting plain of flesh between his shoulder blades.

And yet the mighty game hunter didn't move an inch. Despite the irritants, the discomfort, the yearning pain in his thighs, he remained motionless.

She was beautiful.

Less than 15 feet away, the Ood Cast Season 5, Episode 3 stretched its long neck and let out a low, satisfied roar. The beast was clearly at peace.

Vulnerable.

From his hidden perch Riddell could clearly see every inch of his prey. The ferocious looking claws, the parody songs, the review of Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, even the welcome presence of a return appearance by the Littlest Doctor.

He was near enough to see the whites of its eyes ... and the hilarious spoof sketches about secondhand dinosaurs, T-Rexes in the bath, killer kestrels & a robotic Laurel & Hardy.

This was his chance. His whole life had led up to this moment.

With a measured exhalation Riddell brought his rifle up to his shoulder and aimed for the heart...

This week, flogging a dead cybermat, the Ood Cast return to the concept of "Sexy Daleks". There’s also an earnest debate, peculiar mouth noises, a wet shave and some filing cabinets. Not to mention a new companion, an exciting twist and the Special Weapons Dalek.

Elsewhere, an industrial manufacturer gets an order they just can’t handle, Skaro may or may not have been destroyed and Alpha's being a good Dad.

Yes, a brilliant first episode has flashed past our screens. We've tried to review it but to be honest, it’s all a bit of a Blur...

A little late to capitalise on the awards season, perhaps, but the fevered minds at The Ood Cast are rolling out the red carpet for the great, the good and the naggingly-unsatisfactory-in-some-minor-way to assess Series 6 as a whole and divvy up some hand-cast trinkets to the things we loved and those we loved a little less.

Everyone loves a good quiz, right?

We do, anyway. It's just that some things don't work for quizzes - especially not Doctor Who. We proved that conclusively the last time we tried it.

And we're experienced enough as podcasters to know not to keep flogging the same dead horses once we've checked for a pulse. Not even we would try a crazy idea like that again.

But on the other hand, the title Regeneration Game is too good/bad a pun to not use again. So get brushing up on your borderline-Who-related trivia and brace yourself for levels of logic and gravitas you'd usually expect from the Ood Cast.

Answer: A deluded group of obsessed podcasters that insist on chasing pun-based hilarity in formats that no one quite seems to expect.

So watch out this week while we dissect what happens when you use the flesh technology to fool your friends into thinking you have a real girlfriend, unearth an advertising treat from the future (it's acidic and terrific) and take a look into an official inspection of another mining plant's secretarial staff.

You remember that phrase 'Event TV'?  Well, having waited for 9 years to see a) Doctor Who back properly and b) 6 more years to see an episode written by Neil Gaiman, certain members of the crew of the good ship Ood were a little excited to say the least.  And what a treat we were given...

So now it's our turn to share the joy - this week's Ood Cast is the usual mix of cheery discussion (with a bit of added over excitement), music and sketches.

It didn't work.

Remember the old days, when everyone's favourite podcast with a tenuous Ood pun for a title used to release new stuff every week? We're finding it hard to remember too. But those days are back!

Bit of a weird one for you this week as The Ood Cast go back to basics. Four people, four microphones, in a room, talking. Yes, this is the Oods unplugged and unhinged without the aid of a script or a safety net.

(And because we recorded it three weeks ago we're also woefully out of date when it comes to details of Season 6 so definitely no spoilers)

There's even less cohesion than usual as Andy, Laura, Alpha and Sigma jump from one topic to the next with the linguistic grace of a herd of buffalos with big feet dancing swan lake on a minefield. Comments that have no immediate relevance, a review of Space & Time, hysteria, memoirs, podcest and a very special birthday wish all make an appearance.

And, okay, there are a few short sketches about the Brigadier and a cover of a song by the lovely folk at Radio Rassilon too.

But mostly it's tales told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing...

On this week’s Ood Cast, still a member down, Laura, Andy and Chris Alpha take the Slitheen by the skin suit and use their time wisely. Not by invading the Earth using decoy pigs in space suits (or even pigs in blankets – it is the festive season after all), but by revisiting series one’s Boom Town. They wonder out-loud into handily positioned microphones whether the episode was as shaky as the planning permission for that nuclear power station in the episode must have been….

Our new friend Geoff is polite, well spoken and enthusiastic. His hobbies include underground travel, cyber begging and annoying David Tennant.

And boy does he have a story to tell.

Elsewhere on the show we have even more new voices in our tenuously acronymed feature MOP on Moff, a review of The Beast Below, a sketch about the parent/ teacher interview from hell (or Lancashire) and a lovely song about Star Whales.

After a year of intermittent fits and starts, one-off specials and tortured swan songs, we've suddenly got pure unadulterated Who delivered direct to our brain boxes, jolting us out of our navel-gazing like a hit of adrenalin straight to the heart. BAM!

The 11th Hour has blazed across our screens, as surreal as it was beautiful, full of cocksure swagger, tingling spines and slightly dodgy CGI. But was it everything we hoped? Is the future of our beloved programme in safe hands?

With just a handful of days until the new series starts, we’ll tell you exactly how excited we are in this week’s Ood Cast. But that’s not all we have to say.

We’ll talk about news things – in our own way; knitted, sewn and generally marvellously created things, and we hear how the Doctor gets on when he has to stop on a distant planet for a... comfort break. We also have a bit of feedback from our incredibly intelligent, discerning listeners, and a special musical treat in store too.

If this episode of the Ood Cast was a breakfast cereal, it'd be so packed full of nuts, chocolate shavings, oats, wheat, honey, marshmallows and dried fruit that no one would ever want to eat anything else again. And if that wasn't enough, we finish with a scene set on the Vinvocci home world in which we attempt to explain why the Immortality Gate acted in such a bizarrely lethal way towards the Tenth Doctor in The End of Time.

There's even a sound effect of a space ship landing. You don't hear that every day.

This week on the Ood Cast we discuss Chris' attempt at a unified theory of time travel within the Doctor Who universe. That's right, we spend half an hour earnestly debating a fictional concept. That's how we roll on the Ood sphere.

Apparently.

Despite acknowledging early on that the real reason that Doctor Who's approach to time travel doesn't make sense is because the writers make it up as they go along, we press on regardless and come up with a pretty reasonable explanation that encompasses water mazes, fixed points in time, a technological reading of evolution, calcified internal organs and the fact that the Doctor is probably part-TARDIS.

Classic Ood Cast!

The end of an era, the passing of a baton. Another man saunters off.

This week, the intrepid crew of the Ood Cast tackle the final episode of the Tenth Doctor’s reign.

We took advice from Tom Baker’s final words as the Doctor (“It is the end. But the moment has been prepared for”) and made sure we all had drinks and snacks to take our minds off the upsetting events that unfolded on the screen.

It was the end. And we had certainly prepared for it. So well, in fact, that we were able to record a podcast afterwards.

So, listen in to see which of us was teary-eyed, which was just a bit ticked off that he took so long to actually shuffle off his tenth mortal coil, and just how much of that last sentence I invented...

To the west of the north of that world, the human race did gather in celebration of a pagan rite. To banish the cold and the dark.

Each and every one of those people had dreamt of the terrible things to come. But they forgot, because they must. They forgot their nightmares, of fire, and war, and insanity.

They forgot. Except for four...

Legends tell that these four intrepid humans used their rememberances only for good. To guard against evil, protect against invasion.

But the legends are wrong.

They used it to record a podcast.

Do you remember the old days of "Classic Who"? You know, the days when budgets were the size of your mum's weekly housekeeping allowance which meant that stories were claustrophobic and terrifying, even when the monsters occasionally seemed to be constructed from items you saw her making a cake with the week before?

No? Well, it doesn't matter... Not all of us do either. But we've seen a lot of it on VHS...

But Doctor Who and isolated bases on the surface of a strange planet is a marriage made in heaven, right?

Think back to Christmas Day 2008. The evening.

There you are - on the sofa – feeling a bit bloated because your nan insisted that you had that third helping of turkey and at least two goes at the Christmas pud. You’re becoming steadily more pickled as the afternoon draws on, and your eyes are feeling a bit heavy.

Then something lovely hits your screen. You hear some familiar music. You haven’t been paying attention to the first couple of minutes because you saw that a few weeks before on Children In Need night. But now you’re a bit more interested.

You start searching your mind for what it is like a brain surgeon wearing boxing gloves...

And then you see him. A skinny man with an unmistakable pin-stripe suit, spiky hair and glasses. You know what this is...

You yawn. Then your eyes start to flutter as you desperately try not to fall asleep. But you can’t combat such a force... Just before you do, you see a blurry thing that looks a little like a creature made from a milk bottle top and strips of crepe paper (a la early 1980s Blue Peter).

And the rest is darkness.

Wonder what you missed? Well, let us discuss it in your ear. For in this instalment of the podcast, The Ood Cast Episode Two, we will be discussing The Next Doctor... because it started off the year of specials.

We miss you when you don’t let us talk at you.

The most important thing we want everyone to know before we start (and we say it on the podcast too) is that we love the show. Utterly. Even when we are disappointed by what we see, we love it.

Even, it seems, when we have quite large, uber-geeky reasons for never wanting to see that hour of TV again, we still do. And we still go and buy the DVDs.

Because, to us, Doctor Who isn’t something we can take or leave. It’s almost the thing that has been with us since we were wee bairns in the highlands. Or small children from the south of England (delete according to the way you wish to think of us).

In the words of countless Mitchell characters in Eastenders (so I’m told), “It’s family”. And it is.

Chris has always said the Doctor has had a massive effect on the way he chose to do things (I’m still a little unsure about the blazer and the celery in the lapel, although I’m sure we’ll all get used to it), but for the three of us who make up the male contingent of the podcast, it’s something that rings a – cloister - bell. (Ha! See what I did there?! Oh, never mind)

Laura brings a fresh and sharp view to proceedings to prove that we are just old school idiots sometimes. And that sometimes we do have a point. But not all the time.

We would readily admit that we are sometimes critical. But it’s simply, and only, because we love the show and like to sit around daydreaming about what we’d like to see happen next, or how something should be done. That could be just me.

And sometimes, life really doesn’t come to any harm if you ask a few questions about things.
