There’s a lot of Scorsese talk in this one, what makes this movie feel so immature and derivative, as well as John Travolta’s weird and pretty tragic life and career. Brent also has a pretty long tangent about watching all of Entourage. It’s a bit of a wacky one, so we hope you enjoy. We’re talking lighter fare this season, since the whole damn world is locked inside and quarantined. We’ve also been talking about covering comedy directors since practically the beginning, deciding on these two guys, each with their own careers climbing the zeitgeist and building interesting filmographies. On this season opener talking ‘Shaun of the Dead’, the guys lay out what’s coming ahead, get into Wright’s unique, and modern culmination of visual storytelling, foreshadowing and callbacks, and their favorite zombie movies! It’s the first ‘good’ movie of the 4 Dealer’s Choice competitions we’ve had so far, and the fellas enjoy getting into the nitty gritty of David Wain’s cult comedy classic! The first on-screen appearance of Bradley Cooper, the comedy style of Wain and his comedy troupe ‘The State’, as well as why Wet Hot American Summer was misunderstood at the time and the importance of ‘time and place’ to a films success. All these topics, as well as Tom Nook’s crooked business practices and tangents about loving Paul Rudd make this an all-time bonus ep! They get into the complicated legacy of the film, it’s depiction of torture scenes as well as the intense and realistic raid at the end of Zero Dark Thirty! Aside from that, they get into a brief ‘Chris Pratt Chat Corner’, talk Deuce Bigelow’s relation to Kathryn Bigelow, and an overall discussion and ranking for the season overall (with a few VERY surprising placements). Adam and Brent put a bow on season 6 of Director Showdown with Nolan’s tense war epic ‘Dunkirk’! The fellas talk about it’s experimental, no-frills structure, Tom Hardy’s badass pilot (and masterfully shot dog-fighting scenes) as well as Hanz Zimmer’s perfectly cinematic score for the film. After Dunkirk is Done, Kirk, (sorry) they wrap up their thoughts on this season, it’s role as a semi-sequel to the Spielberg/Kubrick season, and possibly even crown a winner?? It’s an exciting cap to a great season (one filled with even more silly bits than usual) and we can’t thank you all enough for listening.
