Many of us experience unrest in our lives from physical exhaustion, sin struggles, relational conflict, and just the general dissatisfaction and emptiness we sometimes feel. But the Bible tells us that there is a Sabbath-rest for the people of God. Jesus is our rest, and as we keep our eyes fixed on Him, we will experience His rest no matter what situations and circumstances are going on in our lives.

Hebrews 4:9-10... 9 There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10 for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his.

Deny yourself? Die to self? Must I decrease? Is this the way to live the Christian life? No, the New Testament writers of Scripture tell us that your old self already died and that you've become a new creation in Christ. If you are already dead and have already become a new self in Christ, then why would you need to die to self? In Christ, you are holy, righteous, and filled with the fruit of the Spirit. Learn to live out of your new self and walk by faith in Christ in you and through you.

Malachi 3:8-10 (Week 8 - That's Not What That Verse Means)

Some will use Malachi 3:8-10 to say that tithing is commanded for all people. They'll teach that God will bless you with more if you are faithful to tithe. But that is not what that verse means. This passage is addressed to the nation of Israel under the Old Covenant. As New Covenant believers, we give from our hearts which is a work of God's grace in our lives.

Malachi 3:8-10... 8 “Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me. “But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’ “In tithes and offerings. 9 You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. 10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.

In Mark 1:15, Jesus says to repent (metanoia) and believe the good news. Some will say that means salvation is a 2-step process of repenting of your sins and believing in Jesus to be saved, but that is not what that verse means. Metanoia means to change your mind. Jesus was saying to change your mind about what you were believing about the Messiah and to believe in Him as the way, the truth, and the life and the only way to the Father.

Mark 1:14-15... 14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”

John is addressing Gnostic unbelievers and showing them that if they confess they are sinners (which they did not believe) they will be forgiven and be saved.

1 John 1:9 is a verse about a one-time confession of sin to become a believer!

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Philippians 4:13 is one of the most famous verses in all of the Bible, but many have stripped it out of context and use it as an inspirational slogan to tray and accomplish their dreams and goals. That's not what that verse means. In its context, Paul is talking about contentment. Jesus gives him the strength to be content in whatever situation he is in.

Philippians 4:10-13... 10 I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. 11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. Many of us have this mentality where we are earning points for the good things we are doing and having points deducted for the bad things we are doing, but Colossians 1:9-14 reveals the truth that we are already qualified, have been rescued, and are in the Kingdom. It sounds like you already have an A.

Colossians 1:12-14...12 and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. 13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Scripture teaches us to accept one another despite our differences. The church is not a group of people who all look the same, talk the same, vote the same way, or even believe all of the exact same things. The church is made up of all sorts of different people who have Jesus in common. As we accept one another, it brings praise, glory, and honor to God.

Romans 15:7 - Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.
