Lately an idea I’ve been noodling on is that I want to improve my senses and learn to pay better attention to the details in the world around me. In an effort to “train” that skill, I picked up a book on Nature Journaling in hopes of starting my own illustrated journal. However, this past week, I stumbled on a treasure trove of recorded sounds that I’ve organically collected over this year’s travels. In this episode of Camp Nowhere, we’re listening back to my audio take on a nature journal to hear a diverse collection of natural and and human made sounds. Like any journal, revisiting it brings up a flood of memories and realizations with hindsight.

In this episode of Camp Nowhere, we set out on the Wind River High Route in Wyoming for a week of the hardest backpacking I’ve ever had the pleasure of participating in. While on this backpacking trip, we were documenting the experience for our latest film Sideways. Because we were spending time capturing the experience visually, I wanted the podcast episode to examine something completely different. In this episode I share the thoughts and pondering that organically came up from hiking hours on end. I contemplate the landscape, the forest fire that erupted on trail, wildlife, and why exactly I find myself craving backpacking. After 9 years of full time travel, Owen, my husband has gotten a lot of practice with trip planning. In this episode of Camp Nowhere we sit down to discuss how he puts together all of our road trips. Hiking the Michinoku Coastal Trail in Northeastern, Japan didn’t get off to the start we expected… Nor did it end how we expected it would. In this episode of Camp Nowhere we hike the last few days on trail before having to call it quits a day early due to unforeseen circumstances. In this episode of Camp Nowhere MAK & Owen return to Japan to hike a long distance trail called the Michinoku Coastal Trail, that they found in a magazine on their first trip to Japan. The trail traverses a sparsely populated stretch of rugged coastline where the Great Japanese Tsunami devastated back in 2011. They came for the views and to get to know a more rural part of Japan, but in the end, they get a whole lot more. This is part 1 of 2 audio diary episodes documenting their time on trail.

After two and a half years of planning and preparation for transitioning to full time life on the road, we knew that our first few weeks would be memorable, but nothing prepared us for how those first few weeks turned out. Join me as I share the story of the most hilarious, chaotic and magical first two weeks on the road. Starting in Pheonix, AZ we race across the American West as temperatures rise well into the 100s… with no air conditioning… in a van built in the mid 80’s. What could possibly go wrong as we take our friend from Germany on a “classic America road trip”?! Though the trip was filled with misadventures, it was also filled with lessons that we carry with us to this day.

What happens when you decide to step away from other people’s expectations of you? Well, you learn that you actually need to get around your own expectations for yourself. Today, we talk to Shruthi who’s a fulltime traveler, hiker and runner… but she didn’t used to be any of those things. Growing up in a South Indian family in the US meant that all the things that she’s come to love later in her life, such as the great outdoors, went against her families ideas of gender norms. Her time on the road helped her realize a deep love for hiking which taught her just how strong she is, that she can trust herself and what can be learned from having regular conversations with discomfort. In this episode of Camp Nowhere MAK tracks down the origins of a recipe that has long been in her family. The recipe for Kalua Pork is steeped in lore and has feed more people than just about any recipe in MAK’s family cookbook. After seeing how a recipe she grew up enjoying has evolved over the years, MAK starts at the present day version of the Kalua Pork recipe and follows it back in time and talks with each of the people’s hands the recipe has passed through, from friends to family members. Today we’re trying something new! Camp Nowhere’s very first audio diary! This is part 1 of 3 episodes that will cover my last two weeks in Japan. This episode covers a day of exploring Peace Park in Hiroshima, Japan. It was a heavy but important day of learning about the Atomic Bomb and how it effected the people of Hiroshima. Day two we explore Miajima and all it has to offer: temples, torii gates, snacks on a stick, cable car, deer and shooting film at night.

It took me many years to realize that I had an unhealthy relationship with goal setting and new years resolutions. So in this episode I share my history with strict goal setting, how things have evolved over time and what I now do in place of classic “New Years Resolutions”. I also share my biggest takeaways from 2024. We also hear from our “expert witness” Torea Rodriguez as to how she coaches people through goal setting and making meaningful changes in their lives.

Alaska has inadvertently become a place that holds a lot of meaning for me and my family. We all found our way there at different times and for completely different reasons. Over the last three years my parents, brother and sister-in-law have built, by hand, an off grid cabin in the remote woods of central Alaska. Though Owen and I have been to Alaska many times since then, we have yet to see this cabin in person. We made the journey north to see the cabin for the first time, connect with my parents & help them prepare the cabin for winter. If we were lucky, we also hoped to catch a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis.

In this episode of Camp Nowhere, while exploring on Malcolm Island, BC MAK meets Troy Bright, an Orca researcher of 28 years on the island. They discuss how he came to be interested in Killer Whales, how a wrong ferry serendipitously brought him to both Malcolm Island and the sight of his research for nearly three decades. Troy shares the insights of his research and the differences between the resident whales of coastal BC vs the transient whales that pass through the area.
