The pool and fitness centre at the Caledon East Community Complex are now closed for work.  We will tell you when they will reopen.

In early 2001, 19-year-old Kathleen MacVicar moved to Ontario from her hometown of Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, to begin a life on her own. On Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at approximately 10:00 p.m., Kathleen was seen leaving a friend's house, walking toward Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Trenton, where she was living with relatives. Two days later, her body was discovered in a wooded area on the base near Curtis Road. She had sustained multiple stab wounds.

Several months after her death, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was asked to assist the then-Quinte West Police Service with the investigation.

The OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) continues to actively pursue all investigative leads to uncover what happened to Kathleen. Investigators remain hopeful that advancements in DNA technology and the release of a new Unsolved video will generate additional information and provide answers for her family.

A joint reward of $75,000 remains available for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the death of Kathleen MacVicar. The reward consists of $50,000 from the Government of Ontario and $25,000 from the City of Quinte West.

Phase 1 of the new Residential Rental Licensing Program officially opens for Short-Term Rental Accommodations. 
This initiative is designed to improve the safety, quality, and accountability of rental housing across Caledon. By addressing issues like overcrowding, illegal units, and property maintenance, the program protects tenants and neighbourhoods while supporting responsible landlords.
What Short-Term Rental Operators Need to Know: 
• Requirement: Short-term rental properties require a license to operate (exemptions apply to hotels, motels, group homes, and approved student housing). 
• Limited-Time Savings: Introductory licensing rates are available for a limited time following launch to help operators transition smoothly. 
• Safety First: Licensed properties must comply with Ontario Building and Fire Codes and Town property standards and are subject to inspections.

On Saturday, September 5th, at about 12:30 p m, Dufferin OPP were called out to River Road in Mulmur for the report of a serious collision involving a motorcycle with a driver and passenger.
As a result of the collision, the passenger on the motorcycle sustained life-altering injuries and was transported to a local hospital and then later transferred by air Orange to a Toronto area trauma centre
River Road between Prince of Wales Road and 15 Sideroad in Mulmur was closed for several hours as officers continued their investigation.

The Caledon and Dufferin Detachments of the OPP are reminding motorists to exercise extra caution as students return to school today.
With the return of students comes an increase in pedestrian, bicycle and vehicle traffic in and around school zones. Children may be excited to return to school and may not always be aware of their surroundings. Motorists are asked to remain alert, slow down and watch carefully for children walking and cycling to and from school.
Police will be out in full force before and after school hours.
Officers will be conducting enhanced patrols in and around school zones, monitoring traffic and enforcing the rules of the road. Motorists can expect an increased police presence throughout Caledon and Dufferin County and are reminded that getting to their destination safely is more important than getting there quickly.

Motorists and business owners are pleased to see the reopening of Airport Road in Caledon East. The road which has been closed for almost 2 months for rehabilitation work, was scheduled to reopen today, but reopened slightly ahead of schedule on Friday just before the long weekend. While there is still some work and cleanup to be done, motorists can once again travel through the village and access all of the businesses with ease. 

There is lots happening in the community in the coming weeks. The 168th running of the Bolton fall fair takes place on the weekend of Sept 25-27 at the fairgrounds in Bolton. Culturefest 2026 takes place Saturday, Oct 3rd from 4pm-10pm at the Humber River Centre in Bolton. And the 3rd annual Witchfest takes place on Saturday, Oct 24th from 11-4pm in downtown Bolton. So lots to see and do over the next several weeks right here in Caledon.

On Monday, August 30, 2010, the former Orangeville Police Service (OPS) launched an investigation after Sonia's white Toyota Corolla was discovered abandoned behind a business on Broadway in downtown Orangeville. Sonia, who was 42 years old, was last seen on Sunday, August 29, 2010, leaving her parents' home in Bolton. At the request of the OPS, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was called to support the investigation.

On Sunday, September 5, 2010, Sonia's remains were located in a wooded area just off Beech Grove Sideroad in Caledon. Investigators believe that she was targeted. Despite extensive efforts to identify the person(s) responsible for Sonia's murder, the investigation remains active.

A $50,000 reward, offered by the Government of Ontario, remains in place for any information that can lead to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the murder of Sonia VARASCHIN.

Additional information is available in the reward poster and an OPP Unsolved video, which offers a behind-the-scenes look at the investigation and aims to encourage new tips that could help solve the case.

The case remains ongoing by Orangeville OPP, under the direction of the Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB), with support from the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

Healey Road east of Humber Station in Caledon will remain closed over the long weekend due to ongoing construction.
Follow posted detour signage and allow extra travel time if you are in the area.

Some good news for motorists and businesses in Caledon East.  The construction on Airport Road is almost complete and Airport Road should be  fully reopened just after this upcoming long weekend.

On Monday, August 24th, shortly after 8:00 p.m., Caledon OPP responded to a report of an assault outside a business near the intersection of King Street West and Queen Street North in Bolton. The victim, identified as 54-year-old Oleksandr GRABYN of Bolton, was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries and pronounced deceased on Sunday, August 30th.

On August 24th, police laid charges in relation to this investigation.

On Monday, August 31st, 32 year old Oleh MILCHENKO, from Etobicoke, was arrested and charged with manslaughter.

On August 29, 2026, at approximately 7:20 p.m., officers from the Caledon OPP were dispatched to the area of Dotchson Avenue and Sparrowbrook Street, in the Town of Caledon. The complainant reported that a lone male operating a motor vehicle approached a group of children and attempted to persuade them to get into his vehicle. The children refused and the male drove away from the location. The suspect was described to be elderly, of South-Asian descent, operating a white Honda Civic sedan with extensive front-end damage.

Following the investigation, a 74-year-old from Toronto was charged with attempted abduction of a person under 14, contrary to section 281(a) of the Criminal Code.

The accused remains in custody pending a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orangeville on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

Investigators believe there may be additional victims and are appealing for parents or guardians to speak with their children regarding the possibility of similar instances.

On Friday, July 24, 2026, members of the Caledon Detachment were called to Forks of The Credit Road for an eastbound commercial motor vehicle that unsuccessfully attempted to maneuver around a tight hairpin turn on the scenic road. The truck and trailer became wedged into the guiderail causing a lengthy closure of the road for its removal. The area is a posted no heavy truck route.

As a result of the incident, Forks of the Credit Road was closed for over 2 hours to facilitate the safe removal of the truck and trailer.

A 65 year old driver from Mississauga was charged with:

• Interfere With Traffic

Caledon OPP would like to remind commercial motor vehicle drivers that there are many route restrictions in Caledon that exist to keep them, their trucks and the roads safe. If the GPS says yes, but the sign says no - TRUST THE SIGN.

Caledon Detachment officers continue to conduct commercial vehicle enforcement initiatives everyday of the year in an on-going effort to ensure the safety and security of our community members and those passing through Caledon. Road safety is a joint effort between drivers, owners and community members.

The OPP Caledon Detachment would like to encourage motorists to report potential dangerous commercial motor vehicles or poor driving behaviour. Motorists can call 911, or *OPP (*677) on their mobile device and be put in contact with an emergency dispatcher. Using a mobile device to report a potential impaired driver will not result in a charge for using a hand-held communication device.

On July 17, 2026, at approximately 2:15 p.m., emergency crews responded to the area of Ellwood Drive and Queen Street South in the Town of Bolton for a serious collision involving a passenger vehicle and a pedestrian.

Members of the OPP Technical Collision Investigation (TCI) unit attended the scene to assist with the investigation.

The Caledon OPP is appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or was in the area at the time to come forward. Investigators are also seeking dashcam or surveillance footage from the area that may assist with the investigation.

On January 21, 2026, officers from the Caledon OPP received a report of a fail to remain motor vehicle collision. The complainant alleged an unknown driver struck their vehicle and fled the scene without exchanging insurance information.

Officers entered into an investigation which suggested a fail to remain collision did not occur, but rather the complainant had previously been involved in a collision approximately a month prior, which resulted in significant damages to their vehicle. At the time of the collision, the vehicle was uninsured and as a result, the complainant fabricated a new collision report in an attempt to obtain reimbursement for the damages illegitimately.

As a result of the investigation, a 23-year-old from Caledon was charged with:

• Public mischief
• Fraud over $5000

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Orangeville at a later date to answer to the charges.

Truck prohibition pilot in the Town of Caledon

Pilot program will improve community safety in Alton and Caledon East.

Peel Region is implementing a one-year, time-of-day truck prohibition pilot beginning July 2026.

The pilot is aimed at improving community safety, reducing noise, and supporting pedestrian-friendly environments in the villages of Alton and Caledon East.

Reason for the pilot

The pilot is being introduced because residents in Alton and Caledon East have raised concerns about the amount of truck traffic moving through their communities.

Most of the trucks moving through these areas do not serve local destinations, with only a few beginning or ending their trips in the villages. This has led to worries about safety, noise, and the character of these village areas.

The pilot aims to reduce the impact of truck traffic during the busiest and most sensitive times of day. Trucks will still be allowed to use these roads outside the restricted hours.

This approach is designed to protect community well‑being while still supporting Peel’s transportation needs.

Where the prohibitions will apply

Alton:

• Regional Road 136 (Porterfield Road / Queen Street East / Main Street), from Regional Road 24 (Charleston Sideroad) to Dufferin County Road 109

Caledon East:

• Regional Road 7 (Airport Road) from Regional Road 9 (King Street) to Regional Road 24 (Charleston Sideroad)
• Regional Road 22 (Old Church Road) from Airport Road to Highway 50

Truck prohibition schedule

The pilot introduces prohibited truck access during the following times:

Monday to Friday

• 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
• 11:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m.

In addition, all day on weekends and statutory holidays.

Monitoring and evaluation

Throughout the one-year pilot, Peel Region employees will actively monitor:

• Truck traffic patterns, such as increases or decreases and any shifts to nearby roads.
• Road safety impacts.
• Feedback from residents, businesses, and industry partners.

Here’s your Caledon Week in Review for the week of June 22nd to 28th.

It was another busy week across the community as residents settled into summer and several important local stories made headlines.

The Town of Caledon continued celebrating June as Recreation and Parks Month, with free programs, family activities, fitness opportunities and outdoor events taking place throughout the municipality. Residents were encouraged to take advantage of local parks, trails and recreation facilities before the month wraps up.

The Town also highlighted Caledon's newest official symbol. Following a community vote that drew more than 900 ballots, the Downy Woodpecker has officially been named Caledon's town bird. The designation follows Caledon's recognition as a Bird Friendly City by Nature Canada and reflects ongoing efforts to support local wildlife and environmental stewardship.

Roadwork remained a major topic in Bolton, where rehabilitation work continued on Crestwood Road, Little Court, Maidstone Court and Kentbridge Court. Drivers experienced lane restrictions and local traffic controls as crews carried out curb and pavement improvements. Residents are being reminded to allow extra travel time and follow all posted construction signage.

At the Alton Mill Arts Centre, the Wanderlust exhibition wrapped up on June 28th. The popular show featured the work of more than 30 local artists, showcasing painting, photography, ceramics, fibre art and mixed-media creations inspired by journeys, memories and personal experiences.

On the public safety front, Caledon OPP reported the recovery of a stolen vehicle on Coleraine Drive on Saturday night. Three people were arrested following a police investigation, and several charges have been laid. Police continue to encourage residents to report suspicious activity in their neighbourhoods.

Looking ahead, residents are invited to participate in a virtual Traffic Safety Advisory Committee meeting scheduled for early July. The session will provide an opportunity for the community to discuss local traffic concerns and hear updates from town staff, Peel Region and the OPP.

And finally, with Canada Day just around the corner, local organizations and community groups are preparing celebrations and events that will kick off across Caledon next week, marking the beginning of another busy summer season.

Nevaeh-Rae is described as a 17-year-old light-skinned Black female with a small build, long brown hair, and brown eyes.

Nevaeh-Rae was last seen on June 26, 2026, at approximately 4:00 p.m. on Fead Street in the Town of Orangeville.

If you live or work in the area, please check any available surveillance footage for possible sightings.

On Friday, June 12, 2026, at approximately 9:20 a.m., officers received information regarding a concerning video posted to social media by a student that suggested a potential threat to individuals at the school.

Dufferin OPP attended and conducted an investigation. It was determined that a hold and secure was not required, and there was no immediate risk to the safety of students or staff.

As a result of the investigation, a 12-year-old student has been arrested and charged with two counts of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm under the Criminal Code. In accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA), the identity of the youth cannot be released.

The youth will appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Orangeville on a future date.

This incident is considered isolated, and there are no ongoing concerns for student or public safety.
