#137 Morning Glory Milking Farm - CM Nascosta w/ Leigh Cuen

Morning Glory Milking Farm (2022) is an extremely successful self-published work of 'monster-bait' romantasy. In short, it details the budding relationship between Violet, a human female, and Rourke, a minotaur male, who met at Morning Glory Milking Farm, where Violet is working as a minotaur milking technician. There's a point at which a euphemism becomes more descriptive than that which it seeks to soften. The verb 'to milk' has comfortably reached such a point.

Given that I have no experience at all with romantasy or monster-bait, Leigh Cuen joined me to navigate the intricacies of clit-lit.

#135 Vaught's Practical Character Reader - L.A. Vaught w/ Capitalisimo

I tend to think of phrenology as a 19th-century phenomenon. In 1902, LA Vaught, late to the party, published 'Vaught's Practical Character Reader', a work seeking to (re)popularise phrenology. Mostly charming drawings and advertisements for phrenology ('it's plain to see!' is a commonly used phrase), it's a fun read, albeit one that is so chaotically set out that it's kinda hard to follow.

Capitalisimo joined me for this episode, helping me to phrenologically and physiognomically analyse various world leaders and luminaries.

NB: This episode is probably best watched as a video, as we examine Vaught's illustrations and carry out phrenological case studies using Google image search.

Utter Goodness w/ Audrey Lee

Utter Goodness is an upcoming short story collection written by Audrey Lee and published by Farthest Heaven. Its thirteen stories are lovely character studies, various faces of that peculiarly American form of cultural maximalism, and each rendered in very lithe prose. There's a kinda extemporising quality to the writing here, if one could extemporise in full paragraphs with foreshadowing and multiple layers of meaning, etc, etc, ect. It's good!
We spent a lot of time talking about how Audrey comes up with these characters, and how her return to faith influenced the writing of Utter Goodness, both consciously and unconsciously.

This will be the last episode this year. We'll start releasing things again early 2026.

Crowbar w/ Andrew Edwards

Andrew Edwards is the author of the novels King of Dogs (2019) and Crowbar (2025), both of which are well worth reading. King of Dogs is a tense action novel, while Crowbar feels like reading Programmed to Kill and watching thirty conspiracy thrillers at the same time during a speed comedown. It's a lot.
For this episode, I softballed Andy with simple questions like 'What is the supernatural?' and 'What is your conception of the soul?' He's a real trooper and actually answered these, as well as a whole lot more.

The Regime of the Brother is a book of psychoanalytic feminist theory (particularly leaning on Lacan), explaining why we no longer live in an Oedipal patriarchy, but rather live in a 'sham-Oedipus' regime of the brother. Neo-totemism, the primal hoard, the narcissistic ego as a consequence of failed symbolic castration and, consequently, no entry into the symbolic order. Make sense? Officeparks is a wonderful poetry collection from Noam Hessler, and yet another winner published by Farthest Heaven. Romantic, funny, and shot through with an easy, natural experimentation, Officeparks is a real treat. I'm trying hard not to be too effusive in my praise, in case people think I'm being disingenuous, but these poems really are that good.
Anyway, Noam and I got to talk about their approaches to poetry, how they manage to make experimentation feel so effortless, how one might write poems as songs versus films, the Russian language, and a whole lot more.

It's a tale of characters who make remarkably poor decisions, and with a tone veering wildly between slapstick descriptions of triple OG cockroaches and depictions of rape and child abuse.

Eumeswil (1977) is one of Jünger's final novels, and is bizarre, inscrutable, and wonderful. It is, in many ways, a glassy dramatisation of the second volume of Oswald Spengler's The Decline of the West, and also an introduction to Jünger's archetype of the anarch, a series of odd animal metaphors, a collection of fragmented musings by a survivor of two World Wars, and a whole lot more.

Grendel VVept/Playing God w/ C.P. Serret

Grendel VVept is a bizarre book that I can kind of describe as Joycean cosmic horror, but that doesn't cover everything. Traveling through time and prose styles, from today to Renaissance Italy to Sumer to ages even more distant, it's disorienting in a fascinating way. Playing God, the other book of Serret's that I read for this episode, is a tight novella set in 1969 America, with a lot of teenage lesbianism. CP Serret has range.

Early on in recording (within the first five or six minutes), Serret's microphone started acting up. I ended up cutting a few minutes out, because the audio quality was so grating. Apologies to those desperate for every possible minute of Serret.

Pale Townie/American Cats Are in a Big Country w/ Tom Will

Tom Will is a poet who has, among other things, written Pale Townie (Apocalypse Confidential, 2023), a 999-line poem which keeps the heroic couplet end rhymes from Pale Fire (Nabokov/Shade) intact, while transforming the story into something quite different, very Tom Will. He's also recently published American Cats Are in a Big Country (2024, Farthest Heaven), a collection of 73 poems, all of which are very much worth your time and love.

We got to talk about the process of writing Pale Townie, why limericks are so funny, prose poems, clunk, Tom's future projects, and a lot more.

Tom tends to pace while talking. I decided to keep these parts and leave them unedited, because the full Tom Will experience involves periods of muffled audio and sudden clear exclamations. To deny these parts would be to deny the fullness of communication.

In it, Kaczynski describes how 'the System' - more or less a technological society - redirects the popular frustration caused by its intrusions into human life, and its subversion of the power process. Where does it redirect this frustration? Into 'activist' causes, both as a pressure-release valve on popular discontent, and as a way to expedite the social changes required for an expansion of technological slavery.

Otto Weininger, at the age of 23, published Sex and Character, an idealist justification for not trusting the cosmic Woman, as well as an extended rumination on genius, sexual compatibility, Judaism, memory, ethics, and logic, all upon the background of his sexual fears. Shortly after the book's tepid critical reception, including accusations of plagiarism, Weininger rented a room in the building where Beethoven died. Here, he shot himself in the chest, gaining himself a number of posthumous admirers, including August Strindberg and Ludwig Wittgenstein.

Published in 1899, The Interpretation of Dreams is one of Sigmund Freud's most significant works and, by extension, one of the most significant works in psychoanalysis, psychology, and the Western conception of the mind. In it, Freud begins with a collection of questions: what are dreams? What can we learn from them? In trying to answer, he ends up describing a structure of energetic flows between the conscious, preconscious and unconscious portions of the psyche.

Turns out, there's more to Freud than penises, cocaine and wanting to have sex with your mum.

We've broken our usual upload schedule for a very special Book Club from Heaven episode. Why? Because Echolalia Review, by Jasper Ceylon, is so painfully funny. Jasper has performed an elaborate poetic hoax: over roughly two years, he wrote a series of poems, 47 of which were published in 30 different poetry journals. The thing is, these poems were written to be as ridiculous as possible, then submitted under a series of assumed identities, also completely ridiculous. Echolalia Review is a collection of these poems, as well as explanatory notes describing the state of contemporary poetry.
I cannot recommend Echolalia Review highly enough. It's hilarious.

He's also extremely influential in legal and political philosophy, and only growing more so, on both the illiberal left and right. He remains one of the most interesting critics of liberalism, and we were lucky enough to have Dr Jon Wittrock of the University of Malmö join us for this episode, leading us through the foundations of Schmitt's thought.

Paul R Ehrlich is the Bing Professor Emeritus of Population Studies at Stanford University. In 1968 he published The Population Bomb, co-authored with his wife Anne Ehrlich. In it were predicted, among other catastrophes, famines in the 1970s which would kill hundreds of millions. The cause? Human overpopulation. The optimal solution? A trans-national governing body which would regulate the fertility rates of humans the world over.
In 2009, when asked about The Population Bomb's success in predicting the future, Ehrlich replied that its only problem was in being too optimistic. I should note that the predicted global famines never took place.

Miyamoto Musashi is Japan's most famous swordsman, a ronin in the 17th century who was victorious in over 60 duels, founded a famed swordfighting school, and achieved such a level of combat mastery that he learned the essential nature of mastery itself. The Book of Five Rings (1645) was written by Musashi in a cave, towards the end of his life. It contains his thoughts on the Way of Strategy, concrete combat advice, as well as a philosophical account of what mastery truly is.

The Turner Diaries (1978) is a notorious work of white nationalist and white supremacist fiction. It is reputed to have influenced a number of terrorist acts, including the 1995 Oklahoma City bombings. Surprisingly for such a work, the spelling and formatting are mostly fine.

Comrade Kim Goes Flying (2012) is a North Korean romantic comedy, described as "a girl-power fairy tale about dreaming to fly," by one of its co-directors, Nicholas Bonner. The film follows Kim Yong Mi, a plucky coal miner from rural North Korea, who dreams of becoming a trapeze artist in Pyongyang.
The film is as odd, but not in the ways you would perhaps expect; a smoulderingly Oedipal relationship casts a shadow over the entire plot. Enjoy!

Terry Davis was a schizophrenic computer programmer who wrote an operating system by himself. TempleOS, as this creation came to be known, was intended to be the Third Temple, with which Davis could talk to God.
Davis achieved a degree of obscure internet fame from, among other things, his streams, where he would show off features of TempleOS, talk to God, play hymns, browse the internet, and shout racial slurs to fend off psychological attacks by the BBC and CIA.

Lord Timothy Dexter was an 18th century American businessman, who made a great deal of money through a series of bizarre, lucky and, probably, stupid ventures. Shipping coal to Newcastle, selling hot water bottles in the West Indies, speculating on Continental Currency at the end of the American Civil War: Dexter managed to keep turning profits, despite having left school at age eight.

A Pickle for the Knowing Ones (1802) was his gift to the world: an almost entirely unpunctuated and misspelled tract of philosophical musings, many of which are complaints about his long-suffering wife. There are too many excellent quotes to take from this masterpiece, but here's something to whet the appetite:

#67 Christopher Dorner's Manifesto

Christopher Dorner was an officer in the Los Angeles Police Department. He was fired from the LAPD after a workplace dispute in 2008, and in 2013 he declared war on his former employer, vowing to hunt down and kill police officers and their families. In the course of his brief war, he killed five people: two officers, two civilians, and himself. As justification for his actions, he released a manifesto on Facebook, which is what we read for this episode.
We never realised how important shoutouts to celebrities and politicians were in a declaration of war - reading truly expands the mind!

In 2017, Peter Boghossian and James Lindsay wrote a hoax gender studies paper named 'The Conceptual Penis as a Social Construct.' This paper was published in the pay-to-publish journal Cogent Social Sciences which, at least according to the paper's authors, demonstrated that the field of gender studies wasn't rigorous and shouldn't be taken seriously.

The fact that they could pay a shabby academic journal to publish their paper says less about gender studies than it does about the state of academic publishing. Their paper is, nonetheless, a very funny piece of satire, capturing the word-vomit style of many social sciences papers. We read through the paper and offer a (mostly on-topic) running commentary.

Published in 1973 to widespread critical revulsion, Crash is a book about the relationship between humans and their technology, the role of symbols and simulation. These themes are explored through the metaphor of people crashing their cars and having sex with their wounds. I expected to hate this book, but actually loved it. It's a wild ride.

#45 Heaven's Gate

Heaven's Gate is the second-deadliest cult in US history. In 1997, 39 of them killed themselves in Santa Fe, California, while wearing Nikes, which I'm sure the Nike PR department really appreciated. Their aim was to catch a ride on the Hale-Bopp comet, which was actually a spaceship of light, sent by 'The Next Level', an interdimensional organisation which you definitely want to be part of.
The cult's leaders, Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles, secluded themselves and their 'students' for 17 years form the rest of the world, subjecting each other to 'lessons'. Eventually, the cult members were so dedicated that nine of them underwent voluntary surgical castration, which I assume was some sort of team-building activity.

Heaven's Gate still maintains a crispy, 1990s-style website, where they have published numerous theological and advertising materials for the cult. So, like any well-adjusted Earthlings, we decided to read them.

#44 Malleus Maleficarum - Heinrich Kramer and Jacob Sprenger

I'm tired of people talking about metaphorical witch hunts. Heinrich Kramer and Jacob Sprenger, Inquisitors and authors of this episode's book, had a much better idea. The Malleus Maleficarum (translated as 'The Hammer of the Witches) is a witchhunting manual, first published in 1486, in part because Kramer led an unsuccessful Inquisition in Innsbruck, where he was prevented from condemning a number of women to death. Rather than learn from his mistakes, Kramer doubled down and wrote a 700-page tome about why basically every woman is probably a witch, and why they should be executed.

If the combination of rabid misogyny and wonky scholastic philosophy sounds like fun (or not), then listen on.

The Nation of Islam, despite its name, might not be the most Islamic organisation in the world. Elijah Muhammad, one of the Nation of Islam's leaders, collected the conversations he had with Fard Muhammad, the organisation's founder and self-proclaimed embodiment of Allah.
One of the fruits of his labour was Yakub: The Father of Mankind, published in 2002. The subject of this book? The origin of the white race. Turns out, black people are gods, Allah is only one in a long line of gods (and has probably died) and white people are the result of a centuries-long selective breeding program to make the most degenerated humans possible. Islam indeed!

Benito Mussolini, il Duce, was The Father of Fascism. Formerly an Italian socialist, Mussolini founded Italian fascism as a reaction to the failures he perceived in communism and socialism. Under his authoritarian leadership, Italy was one of the two primary Axis powers in Europe during World War II, alongside Nazi Germany under the leadership of Adolf Hitler. He was the Duce of Fascism (1919) and the Duce of the Italian Social Republic (1943) until his untimely death in 1945 at the hands of Italian resistance fighters. His corpse was hung from a gas station and stoned in Piazzale Loreto, Milan.

Terence McKenna was one of the most influential psychedelic advocates of the modern era. We read his seminal work, Food of the Gods, in which he proposes a radical explanation for the origins of our species: Stoned Ape Theory. Influenced by his transcendental experiences with shamans in Central and South America, McKenna suggests the process of evolution from primates to early hominids and the radical cultural evolution of Homo sapiens was catalysed by our symbiotic relationship with psychedelic plants, particularly psilocybin-containing mushrooms. He proposes that the environmental destruction of our planet and many of our modern sociopolitical illnesses can be addressed by a mass movement to reintegrate the use psychedelic plants into our culture.

#4 Vargsmål - Varg Vikernes

We read the 1997 classic, Varsgmal, a manifesto on Norwegian cultural destiny written by the infamous Norwegian black metal artist, Varg Vikernes. Varg was the bass guitarist for Mayhem, one of the most influential bands in the black metal genre, on their first album before he murdered his bandmate, Euronymous. In addition to the murder of Euronymous, Varg was also convicted for the burning of several Christian churches. Whilst in prison, Varg produced music under the name Burzum and wrote this manifesto, Vargsmal, exploring Norwegian race politics, national destiny and advocating the return to pre-Christian heathen culture.

#2 Unabomber Manifesto by Ted Kaczynski

Theodore "Ted" Kaczynski, better known as the Unabomber, is a US domestic terrorist who is currently serving 8 consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole for a series of mail and transportation bombings he committed between 1978 and 1995. On this episode, we read his essay "Industrial Society and Its Future", regarded as a seminal text in the anarchoprimitivist tradition. Kaczynski condemns modern society for being fundamentally dehumanising and he advocates for the complete destruction of the technoeconomic system that is enslaving millions of humans and destroying the environment. Kaczynski famously forced the text's publication in the Washington Post in return for discontinuing his bombing campaign. In court, Kaczynski refused to enter into an insanity defence, basing his defence on his anti-technology views, and eventually negotiated a guilty plea bargain. To this day Kaczynski maintains that he was and is not insane.

Ted Kaczynski studied mathematics at Harvard at 16, completed his award winning doctoral thesis on complex analysis at UMich, and went on to the tenure track at UC Berkeley at just 25 years of age. During his studies at Harvard, Kaczynski was a subject of brutal and inhumane experiments conducted by infamous psychologist Henry Murray in what some suspect to be experiments associated with the CIA's Project MK Ultra. Kaczynski dropped out of his prestigious mathematics professorial career to become a hermit in the Montana wilderness with the goal of becoming self-sufficient.
