Ep. 1: Begin Quest?

And in the flames I saw four knights, traveling in their queer, el-shaped way to converge and surround a fallen king. I saw the Knight of Scrolls, her squire bewitched by a glittering pond beneath the earth. I saw the Knight of Bottles, offer his gifts to the people, and lo those bottles he did not sell, he smashed at the feet of the Red Maiden. There too was the Knight of Masks, removed from his ancestral home by force of arm, and exiled eight thousand paces. Last was the Knight of Skulls, cloaked in not quite perfect darkness, and he did preach of a left-hand path. As the hamlet beneath the mighty cliff gathered to mourn their favorite son, the knights did take the field, and I know not what was buried; the empty casket, the ashen urn, or the interloping bones.

Ep. 2: The Nuisance of Nubbins

And there on the horizon, a great chariot did chase the setting sun, and the four knights each were bound to a spoke of the great wheel. Skull and Mask did weigh their might stone for stone in a struggle for the reins, futile for when the scales tipped, the horses would not be driven by strength alone. Hark! A destination! In shade deeper than oaks can cast, a gaol for inmate and warden alike. The Knight of Bottles would drink deep the ichorous shadows of this place. But the Knight of Scrolls, first to pierce the threshold and that revenant taboo, would spill some light from her book into that place. Last I see the Knight of Masks make ready to perform a rite as would the Storied Physician in a mummers play, and I, through the shadows, cannot discern whether the mask is that of a smiling savior or a grinning fool.

Ep. 3: The Cast and the Furious

I see the knights gathered at a well-worn table, its grand symmetry made naught by an empty chair. No crown, no banner, no seal to bind the knights, yet they follow and do not forswear the shadow cast by the empty throne. A spirit, freed from torment, offers guidance. It is rejected and cast back into that frozen place. In the hall of the curse-tongue wheelwright, the Knight of Bottles shall call the charge. Mask will seize the power of Scroll, and in doing so, will gain new awareness. The Knight of Skulls will make of himself many stars, and perhaps their guiding light will see the chariot through the perilous road ahead.

Ep. 4: The Prime Automotive Plane

The knights find succor in a towne choked by the oppressive gaze of an unfocused eye. The Knight of Bottles heeds the words of the Prophet Profiteer, though the meaning of these missives is absent or occluded before my sight. A knight’s Mask slips aside to reveal that most ancient of curses, she of the Scroll has knowledge of the cleansing rites, but there is no time, and so the wound festers. The Knight of Skulls conceals himself in a cloak of boughs holly, and mistles toe. Violence still finds him, but not unprepared.

Ep. 5: Talking Doesn’t Count

Fish and lentils spill over the smoldering edge, as the burn hole in the center of map spreads outward. The Knight of Scrolls is driven to rage by the visage of the Red Maiden inked with malice unto the curled parchment, but the Skull holds a defiant grin before the coalited attack of onescore such pages. The Knight of Bottles cannot avert his covetous gaze from the Colossus. The Knight of Masks holds a dark gritty mirror up to his diminutive charge, and they both recoil from what she has seen. The Unfocused Eye and the Knights strain against each other, and against the boundaries of a place too small for them both.

Once more, together are the knights. The forces against them lash out at that piece of knightly bulwark that has been broken before, the fallen king. The Knight of Scrolls is spared the title of oathbreaker by magnanimous release. The Knight of Bottles in search of answers rings in tune with the deathseer’s bell. The proud hen preens before her brood. Thus, the fourth wears the guise of the Grim Constable. They chase down the threads of fate, which I see in their chaos a perfect order, and where one ends, two spin out to take their place.

Now beyond where credit extends to their names, only the prince of metals and its lesser cousins will speak for the knights. The quartermaster spends freely on strands and sticks, be they half score in length or cast from pork, but the yellow and purple baubles will be left behind. A new foe suddenly appears and is crushed under a mighty tree, a new more suddenly friend crawls out from the fallen boughs. In search of the second, the third finds the first and the City of Crossroads has become host to a most strained reunion.
