What’s the difference between knowing how to use Ableton and using it on stage to put on a killer performance? It’s pretty simple, really. It’s your mindset in how you approach it.

If you only view Ableton as just software, you limit it to being utilitarian. It’s just there to do a job. But I’m going to teach you a different way to approach it — one you’re likely already very familiar with — that will help you level up on stage.

Watch the interview to hear Martin’s thoughts on live performance, playback, gear & music tech, and what it was like working with Shawn Mendes.

Context is everything. EDM, cover bands, acoustic bands — all different types of bands use tracks. But they don’t all put the same stuff in the tracks because, well, it would be ludicrous for an 808 drop to happen in an acoustic set (or would it be awesome, actually?).

Watch for some tips to think through your context and examples of potential types of sounds to put in your tracks.

I got to sit down with Brian to discuss his crazy schedule and how he stays productive and creative with so many things to juggle.

This conversation was pure gold, and I learned a ton from chatting with Brian. Not just about Ableton Live, but about creativity, productivity, and life in general.

I break it all down for you in this video so you can know whether or not you really should invest in one or if you can get by without it.

Apparently the best way to trigger anyone who uses Ableton is to show them another way to do things. I’ve spent years creating hundreds of videos and tutorials about using Ableton on stage, and most people have found them helpful (over 4,000 people have now downloaded my free tracks template: http://fromstudiotostage.com/template).

But a lot of people are pretty resistant to it. Some ask thoughtful questions or bring up fair points but some still refuse to try something new. Here’s my response.

If you’ve ever experienced a major on-stage fail, you know what it’s like to want to just crawl into a hole…forever. But you gotta laugh at yourself and just take it on the chin. Especially because you’re not alone! Everyone has been there.

Check out some of these stories of major on-stage fails to give yourself a little encouragement and help you have a short memory for that kinda stuff.

In this interview, Jeff talks about how he came up with the idea for the Oakboard Mini, and how that eventually grew into a fully-fledged music software and hardware company. I love Jeff’s story because he never set out to start a company. He just started solving his own problems by learning to code. He built a small MIDI controller to do exactly what he needed it to do. Turns out he wasn’t the only one experiencing those problems, and Oaktone was born!

Jeff is an incredibly talented and endlessly curious person. In addition to owning and running Oaktone, Jeff is an Ableton Certified Trainer, a worship leader, songwriter, and producer.

If you’re using your computer to run in-ears, there are a lot of things that can go wrong. I’m as much an advocate for using computers on stage as anyone, but this is one thing that you shouldn’t use your computer for.

I’ve got 8 reasons why and what you should do instead.

We’ve all seen those videos of a pop artist’s performance going sideways with tracks and all of the sudden the whole world knows they’re lip-syncing.

And yeah, I’m not a fan of that. But that’s not what the way most artists use tracks. Some of the best musicians in the world are using tracks on stage. And they’re doing it in a way that maintains the authenticity of musicianship and skilled performance.

But I eventually flipped the script and became a champion of others rather than just viewing them as the competition. I guess I’m still a jerk, but I’ve made a lot of progress (yep, it really was that bad).

So to build on this, I’m focusing on community over competition in 2023. And I’ve distilled my experience into 5 tips to help you stop seeing other people as the competition and start celebrating them as part of your community.

Few things are as frustrating as software not working properly. And I get it — you’re relying on Ableton for a live performance. You’ve gotta get this fixed RIGHT NOW! But you can’t rush through troubleshooting — at least not if you want to do it successfully.

The difference between a good guitar player and a great guitar player isn’t how well they can play a difficult part. The great guitar player understands why that part works in that part of a song and in conjunction with what the other instruments are doing.

If you want to be extremely successful at something, you need to go beyond learning how to do it and start digging to understand the why behind it.

After replaying the old episode, I share some new thoughts on this concept and why I still believe it’s the most important ingredient for success.

This video is a look back at a podcast episode I did in January 2022. In the episode, I talked about how I noticed a difference in people who would stay subscribed and get the most out of my course subscription at From Studio to Stage vs. those who would cancel and not get that much benefit.

10 months later, I feel that being humbly confident and humbly curious is even more important than I did then. And I share a little bit about how this philosophy is still shaping me today in how I approach life, work, and Ableton.

If you’re running tracks on stage or you plan to soon, make sure to avoid these 5 mistakes that way too many people make.

Mistake #1: Faking It

Don’t have your lead vocal or a blazing guitar solo in your tracks with someone trying to mime it. Unless you’re a famous pop artist putting on a multi-million dollar show, it’s just not going to come across well.

Mistake #2: Not making tracks part of the band

The band and the tracks need to fit together musically.

Mistake #3: You don’t treat tracks like an instrument

If you’re not preparing tracks like a keys player would prepare for a set, you’re doing it wrong.

Mistake #4: You allow tracks to lock you into an arrangement

Playing live music should be flexible and have room for spontaneity. Run tracks in a way that allows you to do that.

Mistake #5: Not editing tracks to fit your context

If you try to just do everything exactly like it is on the record, it’s not going to translate very well. Transitions will be weird and you miss out on opportunities to edit the tracks to fit the live setting.

Playing with a click track can be a game changer for your band. It can make you sound tighter and also open the door to playing with tracks that can fill out your sound.

But there are 5 common mistakes I see bands regularly make. Listen to find out what those mistakes are and why you should avoid them.

1. Change things right before getting on stage

Trust your preparation! If you have a moment of inspiration, write it down as something to try later that you can iron out in a rehearsal.   

2. Update software

Don’t update your software after sound check. If you do, you’ll increase your chance for stuff not working.   

3. Hope something works (without ironing out details in rehearsal)

Your goal should be for you to be confident you’re going to nail it when you step on stage. And if something goes wrong, you know exactly what to do to avoid disaster. 

4. No back up plan 

Things won’t always go as planned, but that’s not a reason to not plan. Because when things go wrong, if you have a back up plan, you’ll be ready to roll with the punches.  

5. Trying something on stage you’ve never rehearsed

I guess some bands get a thrill from doing this? But it’s a surefire way to make sure you’re gonna screw up on stage. 

What I learned still guides the way I run and teach running tracks with Ableton today. It even inspired the unofficial motto for From Studio to Stage: Humbly Confident. Humbly Curious.

1. Start with another role — most playback techs are also guitarists, drummers, or guitar/drum techs that learn Ableton to help their band switch to in-ears and start learning tracks.
2. The Little Mermaid Principle: be where the people are.
3. Show up and genuinely serve.
4. Be a “good hang.” If you want someone to invite you on a tour, being good at what you do is only half the job. Being pleasant to be around and spend time with will land you gigs and make people want to invite you back.
5. Be so good that people can’t ignore you. If you’re fun to be around AND you absolutely crush your job, you’ll always be employed.
6. Consider working for free (but don’t be taken advantage of!)

Music gear is really only as good as the sound coming into it. It’s easy to get entranced by fancy specs and the newest toy that’s just been released.

Bands that successfully run backing tracks think intentionally about who will be responsible for them.

Here are 7 tips to help you choose the right band member to run click and tracks in your band:

1) Avoid the drummer

2) Consider having the music director run tracks

3) Who is the most technically capable person? (You can rule out the guy with the 5stringslayer@aol.com email address)

4)  Who is comfortable troubleshooting? (Any IT folks in the band?)

5) Pick someone who has good musical instincts and knowledge

6) Consider someone not on stage like a dedicated playback tech

7) Buy them a MIDI controller that makes sense for their role
