We all know Tetris. Now add in some panache fueled by various electronica beats, entrancing visualizations to match the music, a desire for a zen state of gaming, and you have the synthesia masterpiece known as Tetris Effect.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

We're not quite sure where Joshua found the beret, baguette, and striped shirt he wore in... But today he's also brought us Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 to listen to while celebrating his birthday this week. 2025's Game of the Year for many, this RPG is the studio debut for French developer Sandfall Interactive, published in partnership by Kepler Interactive, with music composed by Lorien Testard and Alice Duport-Percier. Expedition 33 wears its love for Japanese RPGs like Final Fantasy and Lost Odyssey on it's sleeve while reinventing what it means to be a turn-based RPG with incredibly satisfying combat. Taking place in an wildly surreal world with a well-written cast of rich characters, set to some of the most hauntingly beautiful music heard in gaming for years... This game will leave you with a story that will stay with you for a lifetime. There's very good reason why so many celebrated it in 2025 as their GotY, and now we're here to share and celebrate it's music with you.

Today's episode Chris brings us an episodic JRPG series that spawned a cross-media story of novels, manga, anime, and video games back from yesteryear in 2002-2003. Pronounced "dot hack", the games were Infection, Mutation, Outbreak, and Quarantine, collectively referred to as IMOQ. Developed by CyberConnect2 and published by Bandai exclusively on the PlayStation 2, it focuses on the story of people trapped in an online fantasy game (a game inside the game) due to some wild AI programming and sci-fi shenanigans. With a blend of fantasy and sci-fi from the turn of the millennium, composer Chikayo Fukuda goes in a lot of creative directions to bring us the soundscape of a Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) gone berserk while your team unravels the mysteries driving all the plot of the game.

In today's episode Joshua brings to us platforming royalty with Donkey Kong Country. This 1994 Super Nintendo gem was developed by Rare, published by Nintendo, and brought a truly unique 3D art style to a generation that was almost exclusively 2D sprite work. To stand out on a console known for its platformers takes a lot of firing on all engines and the soundtrack definitely did its fair share of lifting from composers David Wise, Evaline Fischer (Novakovic), and Robin Beanland.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

In today's episode Chris brings us the celebrated remake of an iconic JRPG, Final Fantasy VII Remake. Released in 2020, developed and published by Square Enix, this turn based/action RPG is a reimagining of the 1997 classic that brought JRPGs to the West in a big way on the original PlayStation. While Final Fantasy VII on it's own would make for a great episode, we wanted to focus on it's new music, deeply embellished arrangements from the past, or wildly reinterpreted and mixed tracks supported by modern instrumentation throughout. Most of the music was originally composed for Final Fantasy VII by Nobuo Uematsu primarily, with new arrangements and compositions by Shotaro Shima, Yasunori Nishiki, Masashi Hamauzu, and Naoyuki Honzawa selected for today's episode.
